The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald creates parallels between the weather and the underlying emotions of the characters, throughout the novel emotions are expressed which in ways are linked to the weather. Weather can sometimes reflect upon the way we feel and in this novel it is described very well. The hot weather expresses emotions of anger and betrayal, on the other hand rain expresses the emotions of sadness and feelings of insecurity and finally darkness expresses the emotions of mysteriousness and fearfulness.
As the novel progresses, different emotions are expressed which in ways are linked to the weather and show the emotions of the characters. The day that all six friends went out, Tom was frustrated because his wife was with Gatsby and she was expressing her feelings for Gatsby, which Tom could not stand seeing, and that's all he could take, so he asked Daisy to leave with him, " come on what's the matter, anyhow? If we"re going to town, let's start." (112) Due to the intense heat outside, it made Tom's temper worse and he could not stand being around Gatsby. Later as Daisy and Gatsby revealed their feelings for each other and told Tom that the both of them were going to be together, " Your wife doesn't love you- (122). "Daisy's leaving you- (124). "Nonsense" said Tom (124), and Daisy admitted that she was leaving her husband. This shows how much trust Tom had in Daisy and he felt betrayed because he thought that Daisy really did love him, even though deep down in his heart he knows that she does love him. This also shows how angry Daisy got because she ended up leaving with Gatsby and she lost control of herself and got into an accident which resulted in killing Myrtle. As a result this all shows how heat can reflect a person's mood, Daisy did love Tom but because of the hot weather, she acted in the heat of the moment.
The author uses rain to describe the feelings and the situation of the character and the story.
