Thinking the right way


With the opinions all around, there cannot be a problem with being oppressed. Freire is saying that as a student taking an active role in the classroom and in life will result in what Freire considers idealistic. Freire knows that banking style is not a perfect system, but the other idea that he addresses is "problem posing." In his essay, Freire does not go into detail in the explanation of "problem posing." There will always be certain aspects of both problem posing and banking that overlap. Freire has every intention to leave problem posing as undefined. It is exactly the uncertainty that is a part of our lives. .
             On the same level, John Berger is describing some of the same ideas about life. Berger chooses to represent society through art, and advertisement. It is the view of the outside influence that sways the "normal" individual. Throughout the compilation of essays there is the consistent attempt to force people to take a step back, and view something from a different perspective. The first line that is read in the first essay "Seeing comes before words. The child looks and recognizes before it can speak." From the beginning of our lives we formulate opinions. As we mature, we learn how to express these opinions. At the same time we also begin to learn what is accepted by society. From the very first time we are told something is incorrect, or that an opinion that we concurred is wrong, we become uneasy. It becomes natural to not want to express our ideas and opinions even though there is truly no wrong opinion. Berger pointed out, we are continuously aware that as soon as we see, we realize that in return we can be seen. In society this creates a level of discomfort, especially as we grow older. This idea relates back to Freire and his essay. Students have the idea that they exist in the classroom to be taught. Even though there can be no wrong opinions, there is still tentativeness in speaking up.
