Teacher Philosophy

As a teacher, my purpose is to teach and educate students so that they could become productive citizens in society. But in order for that to happen, there has to be some form of discipline in place. This will allow the teacher to have some form of control in the classroom.
I believe that most children will misbehave sometimes and the most important element in a classroom management system is consistency and fairness. I think that a child's behavior can be changed through consequences and rewards.
I feel that the Canter's assertive discipline theory is very effective. They believe that no student should prevent another student from learning or prevent the teacher from teaching. Teachers must become assertive instead of non assertive. Assertive teachers take the initiative to take charge of their classroom knowing that it is in the best interest of the student. Assertive teachers know that no one benefits when a student is allowed to misbehave. Student compliance is imperative in creating and maintaining an effective and efficient learning environment. To accomplish this teachers must react assertively, as opposed to aggressively or non assertively. The Canter's Model of Assertive Discipline is about meeting students" need by managing behavior humanely through good classroom rules, teaching proper behavior and establishing a climate of respect and trust. I feel that it works as well as any and better than most because the main focus is on the reinforcement of positive behavior. If I react to bad behavior constantly, then it will never end.
I know that classroom behavior is inevitable but I will do my best to keep my students in order and on task. I will also deal with any misbehavior quickly and fair.
I will also constantly remind students of the rules and consequences by putting them in writing and placing them in a conspicuous place.
I believe that positive reinforcement keeps most students on task and attentive and the consequences helps to remind them to stay on task.
