Dadaism

"Dadaism brought about everything new: new ideas, new directions and new people. Dada had no uniform characteristiscs as many other movements in the arts have. Dadaist art can be interpreted by each person how they want to see or read it. Dada brings out feelings and emotions in each person dependant upon wha the or she is doing at the time.".
             .
With the war as a backdrop, many artist contributed to an artistic and literacy movement that became known as Dada. This moment emerged, in large part, in reaction to what many of these artists saw as nothing more than an insane spectacle of collective homicide. They clearly werer "revolted by the butchery of the World War" The international scope of Dada proves this rvulsion was sidespread;although Dada began independently in New York and Zurich, it also emerged in Paris, Berlin, and cologne, among other cities. Dada was more a mid-set or attitude than a single identifiable style. As Andre Breton, founder of the slightly later surealist movement, explained; "Cubism was a scholl of painting, futurism a political movement: Dadais a state of mind." The Dadaist believed reason and logic had been respobsible for th unmitigated disaster of world war, and they concludes that the only route to salvation was through political anarchy, the irrational, and the intuitive. Thus, an element of absurdity is a cornerstone of Dada, even reflected in the movement's name. .
Many artist reflected their own artistic needs during this exact period. Marcel Duchamp, Hannah Hoch, & Kurt Schwitters were all artist from this period.
