Without nuclear testing we would be defenseless to other nations that possess more intimidating and constructive weaponry. These are reasons why nuclear testing should be practiced but there are also reasons why this testing is harmful in many different ways.
On the other hand, peace should not involve the testing and construction of nuclear weapons that cause mass destruction and death throughout the world. If let alone and not pursued, these types of military hardware could and would not harm us. Do not forget about the amount of contamination nuclear weapons produce as well. For years these nuclear weapons have been contaminating our environment by discharging harmful contaminants into the environment, but yet they still seem to be the backbone of our nation being built and tested every single day (Armstrong, David, 1). Throughout most of the Cold War period, nuclear physics was the popular science that got most of the nation's public funding. "Within the past two decades, giant corporations have been increasingly dictating the kind of science and scientific research that gets done, mostly to fatten themselves at our expense, so they can all better exploit us for further gain" ("The Academic-Industrial-Military Complex Engineering Life & Mind").
Although it has not gone unknown, many have recently become much more aware for concern of the environment, not only in their town, but in others as well. The DOE is actively involved in several assignments, like passing laws and engaging in community clean-ups, to better environmental conditions around our country and others ("People and the Environment").

We, as humans, are capable of controlling nature to some sort of degree, unlike any other animal on earth. We are the smartest of beings on the planet and thus, have a responsibility to use our knowledge to our advantage. This is the very reason why we are able to regulate most of the good or bad effects that happen on earth.
