After attending Whittier Elementary every week over the quarter I feel every student gained something. I enjoyed being paired up with a specific student at the beginning and really got to know Tim who was the student I was partnered with. I think this course aided me from the standpoint of where many times college students can just be thrown into a classroom with 25 kids and not know what to do. Having a buddy allowed us to ease into knowing how students are at a particular age and it also let the class take a step back and look at the class as a whole when we did our peer teaching. .
This project gave me many positives and I benefited from it greatly. All of the students were cooperative and wanted to learn. Tim was always asking questions and wanted to learn, and when I asked him to have something for class the following week he always completed the assignment or task. I would strongly recommend that this project be carried on in the following years because it allows college students to gain experience and that is what improves teaching. .
I was only disappointed when Tim could not make it to the health fair after we did all of the work on the hue project. It helped me understand that sometimes you are going to have parents in a class that do not value what their kids are doing in school as much as they should. Tim was not able to make it to the fair even though he is a good student and wanted to be there. His parents declined him the opportunity and as a teacher I would most likely touch base with the parents and let them know what happened and ask them why their child was not there.
Everything besides that incident made it a great experience and I look forward to more time in the classroom with many students and hopefully can help them in a positive way to make learning interesting and contagious!.
