American needs knowledge about religious cults due to the impact cults may have on the Constitution's first amendment. The new religious market has generated many emotions. Many of the bad feelings come as a result of reports written from the points of view of parents, former cult members, and deprogrammers. Very rarely is a report done from the believer's side, telling why they left home, campuses, and careers to practice full time religion. Positive emotions come from cult members and civil liberty unions. These groups are using religious freedom as a defense against counter cult groups.
Hundreds of thousands of today's people are searching for happiness, fulfillment, and spiritual meaning. Traditional Christianity and Judaism are not enough, and rising generations are turning to new religious (Rowley Cover Leaf). Today's rate-race is driving the individual from conventional religion. People feel let down by schools, churches, and the government. The struggle against "overwhelming bureaucratic red tape- is too much for many people (Stoner and Parke 155). The persistent family, obnoxious congregation, and pushy priest are wedges that separate young individuals from their church. Young adults are critically examining traditional values in their religions. Not all young people question and separate from the church, but many do.
