History

Canada was first settled by explorers and traders. The traders came to Canada to buy produacts like fur and lumber and sell them in Europe. Settlers and farmers came much later in Canada's history.
Canada was settled in three stages : forts, farming, and towns. Forts were built by the military, fur traders, and missionaries. These forts were located on a river or lake for the follwing reasons: first of all, to provide access to the trapping regions and second, transportation routes to get the furs to Europe.
The forts soon grew in size and developed into settlement centres. People arriving from Europe first came to a fort then moved on to another region. The forts became a trading centre by providing the supplies needed for the growing number of inhabitants. .
Gradually the newcomers began to farm the surrounding area and built homes on their farmland. The farmers would come to the fort to trade their crops for other supplies. Farming gradually became the dominant economic activity of the fort.
Eastern Canada was the first area to see farming communities evolve into towns. The towns grew rapidly and needed to be supplied with building material, food, and many other goods. These new towns attracted administrators, shop keepers, lawyers, soldiers, doctors, dentists, carpenters, blacksmiths and other workers. If the town showed potential for continued growth, the government set up schools, ports, built roads. Government administrators soon arrived to govern the developement of the town.
Therefore, the history of the Canadian Settlement is very important, and also an important part of our history. If we did not have Canadian Settlement, we wouldn't have the Canada today.
