Humans and Machines

The memes have made us do it - because a "self" aids their replication" (Blackmore 234). Blackmore feels that the memes that make us up make our decisions. We are living a lie because we think we are making the decisions, holding feelings, and having experiences. The true power behind this is these so-called memes. The human being seems not to ever be in control of themselves or the emergent systems created. The emergent systems and memes both have the control and make their own decisions for themselves and for us. .
Memes and emergent systems make decisions for themselves. Human beings have no control over this. In order for memes to make these decisions they must become a group, or in other words called a memeplex. Blackmore explains this in her writings: "Memeplexes are groups of memes that come together for a mutual advantage. The memes inside a memeplex survive better as part of the group than they would on their own" (Blackmore 231). Blackmore states that memes are much better off working together in a memeplex than they would if they went solo. This act of working together to achieve something is not only used by these memes, but many other things as well. In nature, animals work together to get things done, human beings work together to achieve their goals, and Johnson believes that computer programs do the same. Johnson shows this through a videogame creator Eric Zimmerman, and his game called Gearheads. Gearheads is a game where you pick the wind-up toy of your choice to attempt to get to the other side of the screen. Each toy has a different behavior to help them get to the other screen. Zimmerman tells us that the self-grouping of these toys can be found when a few of the toys behaviors collide on screen. Zimmerman explains "the little system of these three toys would march together across the screen, like a small flock of birds" (Zimmerman in Johnson 180).
