Socrates

Originating from Athens, Socrates was the philosopher that set the standard for Western Philosophy as it is today. Born in 469 BC, he was raised as a child by his parents who were a midwife and sculptor respectively. About midway through his life Socrates married Xanthippe, whom with he had three sons. However even with a family at home Socrates spent nearly all his time away from home philosophizing. .
While away from home Socrates never went far, he always stayed very close to home often wandering through the agora (an Ancient Greek market place) and discussing his ideas with students, friends and other people he found in the street. Socrates believed in questioning people and the way they ran their lives, claiming that "the unexamined life, for a human being, is not worth living". His main focuses with his philosophizing was on human relationships, ethics and politics. He believed that all immoral behaviour is a result of lack of knowledge, from not knowing the right thing to do, and therefore not making the right decision. He claimed "when we know what is right, we will do what is right". Socrates" solution to this issue, was to always question yourself and others on why they were doing things and what was their reasoning behind it. .
However famous Socrates" was for his philosophizing he was just as infamous for his profound ugliness. He was said to have a broad face, thick lips surrounding a round mouth, a heavy beard and small bits of grey hair surrounding a large bald spot. This added to the people of the times" fascination towards him. .
However in the year of 399 BC charges were brought against Socrates claiming that he was guilty of not believing in the gods that the people of the time believed in, introducing new religious beliefs and teaching them to young boys. During the trial in Athens, Socrates denied all charges still sticking to the belief that he was only trying to teach the truth.
