The Lord Of The Rings - A Classic?

Can this work of fiction be considered a classic? To become a classic a work of literature must defy age. The story must appeal to readers long after the book is published. As the world changes so do readers but for a classic to be created the novel must relate in some way with its readers and the themes and morales of the story should stay true throughout life even though the readers change. The novel could not just simply be a fad written to please the audiences of its time but rather to please readers for years to come. I feel The Fellowship of the Ring by Tolkien is one of those classic timeless masterpieces of modern literature. Although the story is fictional the themes and morales of the book can be applied in today's time and in the future.
The Fellowship of the Ring is part of a series of three Lord of The Ring books and is a work of popular fiction. Recently movies have been made depicting the Lord of the Rings story which has created a lot of popularity of the original Tolkien books. Everything from shirts to video games have been created based on this work of fiction. I think for these reasons most would believe that The Fellowship of the Ring can not be considered a classic. Most would believe the story is just a fad and the book would eventually be left on the shelves of a bookstore or library. Although because of the mass media the Lord of The Rings has received in the past couple of years the story will probably amount to nothing more than popular fiction but that still does not change my beliefs regarding that it should be a work of classical literature. .
The Lord of The Rings shows how people of different species come together to fight a greater evil threatening them all. Even if the people in this story include dwarves, elves, hobbits and humans it shows how people can come together. The story also tells how a person cannot use evil even with good intentions because it will only cause trouble.
