Women today have the most opportunities ever when it comes to sports. More and more organizations are being formed and college teams are being created. Things such as Title IX also help women to achieve success in the sporting world. I feel women should have the same rights as men when it comes to the sporting world.
Equality should be a main focus in today's society. Allowing women the same rights as men in sports is just the right thing to do. However some times equality is stretched too far. Title IX may have helped women out and created a lot of openings for women, however, some colleges are cheating the Title IX policy by simply eliminating male sports. This is where the line should be drawn. Title IX should be rewritten to say that existing sports and clubs should not be eliminated to make demands of the Title IX policy. By giving these rights to women, many men have lost their opportunities to succeed in some athletics.
Overall the popularity of male sports to female sports is the reason there are so many more sports for men. When it comes down to it, professional sports are in it to make money, not lose it. Male sports draw the crowds, while women's seem to be less publicly viewed. This is probably the main reason why women haven't had as many opportunities as men. I"m not saying women aren't good athletes, I"m just saying they aren't as popular.
Today some girls are even trying to get on the guys teams. I see no problem with this as long as they are physically strong enough to manage in these sports. However what happens when a male wants to join a female team? In a way this isn't fair, most males have larger muscles and are able to perform better then women. It's the way nature made it. So if girls can play on guys teams, its only fair that guys play on girls teams isn't it? The newspaper article with Bradley Bell in it is a perfect example. Bell wanted to join field hockey and became a member of his high school's junior varsity team.
