Because Christy was a fighter and had a determined personality he picks up the chalk and tries again. By the time he had finished he had written the word "mother". I really liked that part of the film as it showed the love between him and his mother. The family looked dumbstruck! Before he had tried to write, nobody had any faith in him. I found that quite heartbreaking that nobody believed in him, and believed that just because of his illness he could not lead as normal life as possible.
Although I have mentioned that Mr. Brown was violent and short tempered you see another side of him in this extract. For the first time his father was actually proud if him. Before it happened I think, although there was no doubt he loved him, he was a little bit ashamed and embarrassed by Christy (this is fairly understandable because put in the same position I might have been also) but now he was holding him up high outside so everybody could see, shouting "This is Christy Brown. My son. Geniuses. After that incident I changed my opinion of Mr. Brown. .
In my opinion one have the most upsetting and heart-breaking scenes was when Mrs. Brown fell down the stairs. Christy pretty much saved her life by shouting for help but the neighbours came to the conclusion that it was his fault that she fell in the first place. The neighbours talked about him, in front of him, as if he wasn't there and said really unnecessary hurtful things.
Another heartbreaking moment in the film was when Rachel returned Christy's love token. Rachel originally thought it was from Christy's brother and was well chuffed. Then her friends pointed out that it was from Christy "The Cripple". I don't really think there was any need for her to return it but she did. Possibly the most heartbreaking incident literally was the look of rejection on Christy's face when she told him she could not take it. The sadness here confirms that Rachel judged Christy on what was on the outside, which is unimportant.
