Benjamin Franklin


            
             Benjamin Franklin was born in Boston Massachusetts on January 17, 1706 to Josiah and Abiah Franklin. He came from a family of 17 children in which he was the 15th child. His dad was a candle maker and a soap maker. When he was ten years old he was forced to quit school after only two years. His father wanted him to work full time as a candle maker and to learn a trade. He wasn't happy being unable to attend school for he loved reading and writing. He wasn't very good at arithmetic, but he did miss school. At the age of 12 his father convinced him to go work for his brother as an apprentice printer. He ended up in Boston Massachusetts at his brother's house. .
             His brother's name was James and he ran a print shop. Ben went to work as a print layer and found this job to be fascinating. He loved setting type and could read to his hearts content. He soon found himself not only reading but also writing. He began writing compositions and would slip them under the print shop door as though a stranger had left them their. He would sign his articles as "Silence Dogged", pretending he was an old widow living quietly in the country. He knew if his brother found out it was he writing them they would not be published because he was so young. People liked reading his works and found them amusing and humorous.
             It became increasing more difficult to work for his brother, as he was very overbearing and very hot-tempered. At 17 he ran away from his brothers to find his fortune elsewhere. .
             He ran away to Philadelphia (which was the biggest city in the colonies) to work as a printer. He showed up with only a dollar in his pocket and the clothes on his back. He was soon hired as an apprentice printer. When he was 22 he became the master of his own print shop and began publishing the "Pennsylvania Gazette" which became the biggest newspaper in the colonies. He soon began to write "Poor Richard's Almanac", which made him very wealthy.
