             United Airlines is one of the most respected airlines in the world, but the post 9/11 American era and European rivals are threatening that status. In the past year, German carrier Lufthansa recorded net income of $774 million with revenues exceeding $18 billion. All this prosperity in Europe despite the badly damaged travel industry. Unfortunately United Airlines is expected to post a first quarter loss of over $1 billion. The article then goes on to criticize the American firms for they complacent strategies seen after congress awarded huge subsidies and low interest loan guarantees to the industry to bail them out of the post 9/11 economy. Meanwhile the European counterpart firms have some how not only managed but excelled without government assistance. The authors do however acknowledge the fallout from the terrorist attacks was greater on American travel than it was on European. Although the geopolitical landscape can be attributed some what to terrorism fears, the article suggests more fundamentally sound operations in Europe are responsible for the disparity between the two continents. New flexible labor agreements, job cuts, lean operations and limited competitions are the real reason that Europe's air carriers are fairing so much better. .
