The Great Gatsby

Gatsby's lavish and limitless parties are a prime example of this behavior. People wanted some sense of escape and this in turn is what shifted their beliefs. Daisy is Gatsby's infatuation. In his eyes the earth could not keep rotating if her presence did not grace it. Although she has a beautiful exterior her inner soul is draped with grief and suffocated by her selfishness. She deceives people into believing she's a sweet, innocent girl, but that couldn't be further from the truth. .
Color plays a major part of the symbolism in the novel. Ironically, Daisy is associated with the color white. In a conversation between Tom and Gatsby it's discussed that daisy seems to live, "High in a white palace." (Pg. 127) This is symbolic because it shows how this upper-class girl never had to work a day in her life. The white represents how her hands always stayed clean and she felt superior to others, due to her wealth. We can also see how this is exemplified by her white clothing. When Nick first sees Daisy, "They were both in white and their dresses were ripping and fluttering as if they had just blown back in after a short flight around the house." (Pg. 12) Daisy is also referred to as, "The Golden Girl." Symbolically this represents Nick's acknowledgement of her wealth. .
The most important color in the novel is the color green. Towards the end of chapter two, Daisy is pondering to herself about Gatsby, " I glanced seaward- and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock." (Pg. 26) To Gatsby the green light symbolizes a new beginning. It also symbolizes her love for money, which entices her to pursue Gatsby. Almost as if green was the signal for him to go. It also symbolizes his sense of hope and his dream, that maybe someday he can have Daisy back as his love, just as she once was. Gatsby is also seen stretching out his arms toward the green light.
