The people of Madisonville, TN went about their business as usual on the afternoon of December 25, 1969. Children played basketball in the new high school gym while the snow fell outside. Parents and family friends shopped for last minute presents. None of them suspected that disaster was about to ensue. While every one was busy with holiday pursuits the snow that was coming down began to pile up on the roofs of all the buildings in town, including the new gym. Later that night, after all the children were nestled in their beds, with visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads, suddenly there arose such a clatter that everyone sprang from their beds to see what was the matter. Based on this theory, the School Board chose to take legal action against Heron Construction Co., the company that built the gym. The case didn't appear in court until over a year after the incident. The citizens in the town were becoming aggravated, but there wasn't anything that they could do.
Also, because of the collapse, life at Madisonville High School was very
different. Not only did the physical education classes have to find an alternate location to meet in, the agriculture classes did too. The agriculture department was in the same building as the gym, so it had to be declared safe before the students were allowed to return to their classes.
