Education for life?

“However good the education system is, it cannot adequately prepare students for life in the adult world.” Is this true?

Before being able to comment accurately on the issue at hand, there are terms that are in need of definition. The word “good” is highly subjective. In order to judge if something is good, there must be a benchmark or a criteria in which the criteria has to be met before something is good. Therefore, before commenting if the education system is “good”, we have to design a template to measure the success of the system.

We must have a clear idea on what “education” really is. Some believe that education should be a means of imparting knowledge, more specifically, knowledge about the world, to students. Others, however, believe that education is about molding a person’s character, enabling him to become a better person. I believe that, the main aim of education is to nurture students to become responsible, productive members of society, and equip them with the knowledge and ability to overcome adversity in the real world. Therefore, the education system is the process in which these aims are met.

In the real world, also known as life in the adult world, work is generally divided into three

There might be some people lamenting on the deplorable state of the education system in Singapore, saying that our education system is too examination-oriented, I tend to differ. The system of examinations is really in fact an excellent system of checks and balances in which students are pressured or should I say, strongly encouraged to study the subject well. The results of our premier education system can be seen in the excellent grades of Singaporean students in the “O” and “A” level examinations as well as the high standard of performance in the International Olympiads for the Sciences and Humanities. Therefore, I believe that any good education system would have at least satisfied this criteria of equipping students with basic knowledge.

It is understandable that schools are unwilling to pay attention to this aspect, chiefly due to the lack of performance indicators, the scientific quantitative method to chart a student’s moral development. For example, due to the fact that schools in Singapore are ranked according to their student’s examination results, the school administration has uses this measure of success as a motivator to ensure that students have a basic level of knowledge. Since there is no system to measure a student’s moral development, much less talk about ranking schools upon this, schools are unwilling to invest time and energy in ensuring students have a sound moral and value system. Without a sound value system, how is it possible to say that students are well equipped to face life in the adult world?
