In Praise of Idleness by and Bertrand RussellIn his essay, "In Praise of Idleness," Bertrand Russell identifies the crucial socio-economic problem as half the population being overworked and the other half having little, or no, work. The logical remedy would be to divide the working hours and ensure employment for the whole population, which however, would in turn provide a great amount of leisure time for everyone. The issue then shifts into a cultural one. The climate of thought and beliefs runs contrary to logic, and has roots deeply embedded into "virtues" of individual industry, competitiveness, and receiving only what you earn. The History and Controversy of Graffiti ArtI. Outline I. Intro-Hook Whether it's a quick tag or well-crafted piece of art, graffiti is easily one of the most notorious types of self-expression. However, there's a constant battle between those who consider it an art form, and those who do not. Formal Definition Markings, as initials, slogans, or drawings, written, spray-painted, or sketched on a sidewalk, wall of a building or public restroom, etc. Background Information In most countries, marking or painting property without the property owner's consent is considered defacement and vandalism, which is a punishable crime. Controversies that surround graffiti continue to create conflict between city officials/law enforcement and writers who wish to display and appreciate work in public locations. Thesis Even though graffiti is loosely referred to as art, the creativity and skills needed to be a graffiti artist surpass most assumptions and continue to awe those who are lucky enough to witness work in progress. An Effective Speaker with Noble IntentionsIn his commencement speech, "Having a Degree and Being Educated," Dr. Edmund Pellegrino has the goal of helping Wilkes College graduates realize that they are not done learning by asserting that their degree is an illusion. He focuses on abolishing this false impression that an educated mind is static. He philosophizes that this illusion, if not rectified, will have negative consequences. He is talking about the effects of being complacent and depending on other's opinions, specifically the opinions of hailed experts. Another downturn of this illusion is the tendency to be locked in, immobile in their own field of expertise. To break this illusion, he cross examines the functions of an educated mind. Socratic in his approach, he delves into this crux with compelling tone and diction, effectively provoking the listeners to heed to his message. Dr. Pellegrino sparks everyone's curiosity by opening with this general statement, "Few humans live completely free of illusions." He warns that there will be deleterious effect if this illusion is not confronted instantly. His diction, dramatic and severe, uses the term "psychosis." This amplifies the message of an urgen |

Understanding Natural SelectionIf one reads Darwin's Natural Selection, several difficulties might follow if the reader does not understand the scientific terminology or biological concept. Understanding it requires a history in Biology, and some parts require one to possess a certain amount of knowledge to interpret it. Natural Selection was an essay, an excerpt of the book "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection," and talks about sexual selection and illustration of actions. Natural selection in whole talks about how nature "selects" the certain individual from a group or population – a group of the same or one species – of animals, insects, plants, and even prokaryotes (single-celled organism without nucleus, a membrane surrounding the DNA) like bacteria and archaea. For example, between a faster lion and a stronger lion, the faster lion tends to survive since the stronger lion cannot catch it. It also talks about the evolution and inheritance of a specific trait like a bird's bone. If one looks at a bird while it is flying, one will notice the shape of its wings. The bones inside the wi |

The Contradictions of CapitalismBefore we begin to examine the contradictions present within capitalist surplus appropriation, it is essential to revisit the notion of overdetermination. Overdetermination, in many ways, provides the basis for the Marxian approach to class analysis. Put simply, overdetermination states that each process is forever and inexorably connected to all other processes present within society. Furthermore, each individual process, under overdetermination, is shaped by the processes connected to it, and concurrently shapes processes connected to it. That is, each process is both a cause of every other processes and is affected by every other processes. By defining each social process as both cause and effect, one can then see that society is a web of intertwined processes. The removal of one process destroys the web. Due to interconnectedness of processes, conflicts and tensions often arise which pull processes in opposite directions. Marx argues that conflict on a large scale leads to signif |

I Sing the Body Electric by Walt Whitman"I Sing the Body Electric,"" is an open form poem written by Walt Whitman in 1855. Whitman was an American poet and one of the most influential poets of the 1800's. Adding to his fame as a poet, he is often called the "father of the free verse; the open form of poetry. "I Sing the Body Electric,"" is a poem where Whitman explores the human body in a series of lists. Although controversial at first, "I Sing the Body Electric"" is a brilliant example of open form poetry and the virtue of the bodies of both men and women. Starting with the first few lines, it is recognized by Whitman that there may be people who question the human body and its differences from the spirit of the person. Nonetheless, the poem goes on to contradict the beliefs of those who don't belief in the perfection of the human body. It is in these first few lines where a list of the body parts is started and continues throughout the play, highlighting the flawless pieces of the human body. In the second section of l |

Albania and the European UnionAlbania is one of few countries in Europe where the communist regime build its roots for about 46 years. After many successes that were presented to the whole population by the communist party there was a step back in reaching "the top,"" or in other words, in completing our European dream. At that time there was only one party which controlled everything. Before being like other communist countries, Albania was in a very difficult situation, it had just come out of war so everything was damaged and affected by the war. The new regime managed successfully to build houses, hospitals, universities so that everyone would be able to learn to read and write. In this way they won the hearts of Albanians but later all this was followed by many mistakes and step-backs. While other European countries were trying to work together and make the great European family work, in Albania the isolation started. Firstly they settled good relations with other communist countries like China and Russia, b |

Distinctive Voices in LiteratureOur "voices" are comprised of what we say and how we say it. Each of us has our own unique voice, which reflects our personality and our context. In "The Life and Crimes of Harry Lavender,"" a hard-boiled detective novel by Marele Day, and "The Hunger Games,"" a young-adult novel by Suzanne Collins, the distinctive voices of the characters gives us a better understanding of their personalities, their past, and the worlds in which they live. The voices of the characters are created through the language that they use, both verbally and nonverbally, and the framework of narration style and genre within which it is used. The voices of the authors are also present in these novels. Although more subtle than the voices of the characters, it can be detected in the descriptive language and symbolism, as well as in the overall message of the novel. Day and Collins use a variety of non-verbal and verbal language throughout out their novels. These language techniques create the characters persona |

Richard Cory by E.A. RobinsonWritten in 1897 by Edwin Arlington Robinson,"Richard Cory" is a detail-oriented poem designed to make the reader think very thoroughly about the words and phrases that are used throughout the piece. Using a variety of rhetorical devices, the author characterizes the eponymous Richard Cory as a regal and admirable man, yet he is ostracized from a society that refuses to embrace his attempts at socialization. Robinson uses imagery to describe the character through the townspeople's eyes, and irony to show the reader who the real Richard Cory is. Although Cory is a man who seemingly has everything, in the end we find out that he has committed suicide. Robinson is not obvious about the reason that Cory chose suicide, but subtle hints and language lead the reader to consider that isolation and depression may have been the motive behind his tragic act. Robinson never hints to any relationships that Cory may have had - no lovers, no family, not even friends - and this leads the reader to conc |

Atoms and the Periodic TableIn 1897, J.J Thomson discovered the first subatomic particle, which was the electron. His model of the atom was proved with the experiment of scaffold raise. Thomson used magnets and electrically charged plates to deflect caffold raise. Thomson also stated that the particles must be made out of negatively charged particles. Thomson said that nitrogen is the smallest atom of the atom. Thomson's model of the atom only lasted for about 10 years. In 1909, Ernest Rutherford created another model of the atom that was even better than J.J Thomson's of 1897. Rutherford's team proved that his model of the atom was better than Thomson's by using an experiment. During the experiment, Rutherford found that a beam of alpha particles shot at a thin piece of foil, passed through. Occasionally, some of the particles would have been deflected back. Rutherford said that, witnessing this was the most incredible event of his life. When Rutherford realized positive particles attracted negative particles, in th |

Landscapes - Cormac McCarthy's All the Pretty HorsesAssignment The most vivid character in Cormac McCarthy's, "All the Pretty Horses," is the landscape itself. Discuss the novel so far in light of this statement. Response There is not much which can be considered tangible in Cormac McCarthy's novel, "All the Pretty Horses." The novel toys between reality and fantasy, casting a dream-like veil over the characters. However, the incredible landscapes, described in such detail, are without a doubt real and they transport the reader to the vivid setting of Mexico and the Deep South. The novel toys endlessly with the concept of dreams being reflections of reality. In the opening line McCarthy describes "the candle flame" and the image of the candle flame" This is echoed a few pages later when McCarthy describes the Comanche as "nation and ghost of nation." This perception of reality is a fundamental theme in the novel. The novel it |

What I Learned from Habitat for HumanityThroughout my life, I have had many jobs; some more gratifying than others. But I'd never had the sense of landing my dream job until I was hired as a cashier at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore, a not for profit organization that builds home for low income families in our area. Since my time there- I have been able to see the impact this organization has in our community, how my part in this has changed me, and important it is to serve in our community. I had just moved back from Georgia in 2009 where I had spent some time with family. If you remember, unemployment in our area was high at the time; so I wasn't sure how soon I would find a job in order to support my children. Luckily for me, I was immediately hired at the first place I applied- a local thrift store. At least that was what I thought it was. However, it turned out to be more than that. With the proceeds from the sale of donated items, this thrift store helped fund building of Habitat homes throughout our community. This |

Thailand - Land of Many SmilesThailand is known as "the land of smiles"; and for good reason. It is one of the most visited countries in Southeast Asia, with 16 million foreigners flocking to it's beautiful lands and striking culture every year. Its breathtaking beauty, robust cuisine, ornate temples, and friendly citizens attract curious tourists from around the world. Despite the influx of visitors, its culture has remained untouched. Buddhism being the predominant religion influences everything from social interaction to architecture. Thailand's fast-pace economy is one of the fastest growing economies. However, the malnourished government is characterized as corrupted and cronyism. Thailand is one of the most beautiful counties in the world, but does experience its share of social economical issues. The first modern human beings that settled in Thailand was during the Paleolithic Era. Everyone Cheats...A Little"Why We Cheat,"" written by Ferric Fang and Arturo Casadevall, examines the causes of fraudulence and dishonesty, and offers possible solutions to put an end to cheating. In the article, "Everyone Cheats a Little," Fang and Casadevall state that when the circumstances fit, most humans will cheat. There are a number of reasons for these acts of deception including personal benefits, or from a fear of loss. For some, anxiety over a certain loss is a superior motivator than any type of external reward. For others, in a situation where cheating is presented, there is a limit to how much one will cheat. This may be due, in part, to the thought that cheating a little is less of an offense than cheating a lot, and much easier to get away with. Along with these reasons, deception in student and professor academia is partially attri |

Rick Bragg - The Voice of the SouthIf you're from the American south, you may feel that you share a unique bond with other southerners. Traditions, values, speech patterns, and even favorite foods bind them together in a way that "outsiders"" may find hard to understand. Pulitzer Prize winning contemporary author Rick Bragg builds upon the powerful legacy of other southern writers, such as Eudora Welty and William Faulkner, but with a style all his own, making his real-life stories of growing up poor in Alabama poignant and often humorous. Rick Bragg is an extremely gifted writer whose works have acquired a universal audience even though most of Bragg's work can be categorized as Southern literature. The goal in this paper is to show how Bragg has developed his unique style and tone using voice, rhythm, and cohesion in his numerous magazine and newspaper articles, and in his six published books. I will begin with a section about the author himself and later include a section about his methods of writing and teaching cr |

The Life and Teachings of the BuddhaThough details of his existence are widely debated and shrouded in mystery, historians and scholars alike are in agreement that Siddhartha Gautama, the man who would be known as Buddha, or "the fully Enlightened One," did indeed exist. He was born around 563 B.C. in present day Nepal and although concrete details of events in his life have been blurred as his story has been told and retold over the millenniums and often submerged in myth, his general message of enlightenment unearthed through the spiritual awakening that he experienced is as clear and concise as the moment he gave his first sermon, relaying the truth that he had found. These words would unite masses as they became the foundation of the Buddhist religion. Greatness seemed to permeate through Siddhartha's very existence, beginning even before birth. It is said that his conception was marked by his mother Mahamaya dreaming of a great white elephant entering her womb though her right side. This is relevant symbolism as th |

The Pain of Physical SeparationAt an early age, I had learned that being physically separated from a person doesn't necessarily break the relationship bonds of love. My parents and I moved away from India to America at a when I was just learning to recognize the different relationships that entwined me and affected me everyday activities. I was away from my family members by hundreds and hundreds of miles and therefore the geographic distance and dad's work limited my communication and interaction with them. For many families like mine, family life just seems to be spinning out of control due to increasingly busy parents and demands of dual careers as well as the plentiful of outside activities all leave hardly any time for parents to share with their kids. In such cases, grandparents can have a hue impact on the growth of a child growing up in midst of a busy family. Most of my classmates live nearby their family members and I would routinely hear multiple stories of the times they went fishing at Grandpa's house |

Overview of Popular Hybrid CarsHybrid vehicles are vehicles that rely on two or more power sources in order for the vehicle to move. Hybrid vehicle " often refers to electric and gasoline powered vehicles which have battery-driven electric motors and combustion engine. In early 20th century when almost all vehicles require gasoline in order to run, inventors started to think of some other ways in which cars could be powered, these include steam, battery powered electricity, fossil fuels and even combinations of these things. The first hybrid technology actually began in year 1900 where a Porsche designer used an all-electric vehicle and soon added a combustion engine in order to recharge the battery of the said electric powered car. In 1917, Woods Motor Company introduced a hybrid vehicle which ran on 4 cylinder combustion engine and had a top speed of 35 mph. General Motors also developed in 1968 a vehicle that was battery powered at low speed and gas at high speeds. In 1989, Audi introduced and experimental veh |
