Oil & Gas Conservation - Save Energy, Money and the World

Introduction After the discovery of oil in 1859, the world never looked back. Since then, we have progressed in many filed. The industrial revolution had changed the outlook of the world with the help of its brainchild: oil. Now we are so depended on oil/gas in day to day life that we can't imagine living without it. It is expected that oil and gas resources will be exhausted by 2090. The outcome of world without oil/gas would be: · There will not be any means of transportation within and with other countries · The world will fall into great depression · Many countries will become bankrupt · Severe drought due to lack of transportation · Rapid growth in death rate Global warming is not directly caused by oil and gas consumption, but their by-products, like emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2), have done harm to the world. So, it is necessary to conserve oil & gas if we want to see our grandchildren using them. What is oil and gas conservation and

The Growing Demand for Fresh Water

"Whisky is for drinking, water is for fighting over." - Mark Twain Abstract The paper deals with geopolitical contexts of the growing demand for water resources on a global level. The fact of increasing water consumption is caused by number of reasons, such as growing population, development of agricultural production, rise of towns, etc. Therefore it is possible to expect the increasing number and the growing extent of areas where the lack of water will cause the emergence of conflicts. Dealing with the problem will become an important challenge of the future. The most frequent reasons for armed conflicts between states but also inside them are generally considered as ethnic, racial and religious differences, border and territorial disputes or power and political rivalry. Their control over raw material resources has played an essential role in many conflicts although this reason was not apparently dominant while the conflict was arising. In connection with the anticipated devel

The Scarlet Letter - Hester Prynne, Tragic Heroine

In the book, "The Scarlet Letter," Nathaniel Hawthorne creates a character who is so loving, passionate, and mistreated that the reader cannot help but feel badly for her. Hester's immense capacity and need for love and passion is what caused her to commit adultery with Reverend Dimmesdale, ultimately causing her isolation and struggles within the Puritan community. Although Hester does not regret this sin, she will have to bear the burden of isolation for the rest of her life. She is reminded of her sin every day with her child, Pearl, and the scarlet letter. Hester's perseverance, self-reliance, and strength helped her survive the alienation from the town, but the long period of time without another human's affection besides Pearl's made her callous. Hester made the decision to stay in Boston even after being disgraced by the community because she believed Boston was where she belonged and she wanted to help women who struggled within this stringent community. Even though Hester is a

The Benefits of Solar Power

Every hour, the sun beams onto earth more than enough energy to satisfy global energy needs for an entire year; and the sun's energy can be used in a variety of ways. It can be used to cook food, heat and cool homes, warm water, and light buildings. Harnessing the sun's energy powers so many necessities of life and can expand into providing energy for every-day objects such as a television or even a toaster. Considering the condition the economy is currently in, the U.S. needs a renewable energy source to invest money and time in that will be highly beneficial. The most resourceful and qualified source is solar power. Solar power provides job opportunities, causes minimal impact to the environment, and is at an overall reasonable price. Using solar power will open thousands of doors to job offers to help with the production, resulting in increased working Americans. The solar power industry's "innovation engine" has resulted in the creation of tens of thousands of jobs in the last decade alone (Solar Pow

The Eastman Kodak Business Failure

The camera is one of the greatest inventions in human history. In its early stages, few people had access to camera's because they were expensive and not considered something to be used for recreational or personal use. George Eastman, the founder of Eastman Kodak, changed that misconception when he improved and marketed Kodak camera, putting the camera into the hands of the common man. From twentieth century, due to Eastman Kodak's effort, camera became one of the daily necessities that a home should have. However, the surprising thing is that Eastman Kodak has filed for bankruptcy last month. This 131-year-old company was once the world's biggest camera maker and photo film producer. According to a 2005 case study for Harvard Business School, as late as 1976, Kodak captured 90% of film sales and 85% of camera sales in the U.S. However, Kodak declared $6.8 billion in debt and $5.1 billion in assets in this year (Hudson 2012). How could Eastman Kodak lost its market share and became on

The Impact of Gene Therapy

Gene therapy is a procedure that involves injection of "healthy genes"" into the bloodstream of a patient to cure or treat a hereditary disease or similar illness. The blood is withdrawn from the patient; the white cells are separated and cultured in a laboratory, and inserted into modified viruses. The normal genes from a volunteer are inserted into the viruses, which, in turn, transfer the normal gene into the chromosomes of the patient's white cells. The white cells containing the normal genes are finally injected into the patient's bloodstream (Anderson). Gene therapy can accomplish three tasks, which are; replacing a mutated gene that causes diseases with a healthy copy of a gene, it knocks out a mutated gene that is functioning improperly, and it can also introduce a new gene into the body to help fight the disease. Although all these things sound successful and harmless, it can be dangerous and lead to worse cases. Pros There is only one distinct way to cure genetic disorders

Identifying, Finding and Citing Evidence in Academic Papers

Introduction In response to WR121 Participation Assignment 2, this memo will instruct WR121 students how to consider which evidence to use when writing academic papers. This memo is covers the three main steps in the evidence retrieval process: figuring out what counts for evidence in academic essays, finding credible evidence to support a claim (thesis), and citing the evidence correctly in a paper. Identifying Credible Evidence Evidence is nothing unless it can be deemed credible. After reviewing several resources on academic evidence, there are three main qualities that will lead one to believe that their evidence is credible and reliable. First, "Appraise a source by first examining the bibliographic citation Bibliographic citations characteristically have three main components: author, title, and publication information. These components can help you determine the usefulness of this source for your paper" (Ormondroyd). Even af

Peptic Ulcers - Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

Currently, there are 1.3 million Canadians diagnosed with stomach ulcers, a form of P.U.D. or peptic ulcer disease. Peptic ulcer disease involves the formation of open sores or lesions in the lining of the stomach or the duodenum - the first portion of the small intestine, located between the stomach and the jejunum. It is a common misconception that peptic ulcers are the result of a heavy workload and emotional stress, when in reality 80-90 percent of ulcers develop as a result of an infection caused by the bacterium Helicobacter pylori. The purpose of this paper is to educate readers about the diagnosis, symptoms and treatments for peptic ulcer disease, and to help readers learn their risk of developing an ulcer, and the signs and symptoms to watch out for. Causes However, while an H.pylori infection is the root cause of the majority of cases, certain lifestyle choices and other factors can also influence the development of ulcers. Gregor Samsa in Kafka's The Metamorphosis

One of the saddest aspects of Kafka's "The Metamorphosis," is the fact that Gregor Samsa genuinely cares about his family. From the opening of the story, he is shown to be a person who works hard to support his family, even though they do little for themselves. When Gregor morphs into a cockroach, however, the limits of familial loyalty and empathy are tested. Gregor is rejected from the family and Kafka seems to be making the point that there is no such thing as unconditional love. While there are multiple themes displayed in Kafka's text, the relationship between Gregor Samsa and his younger sister, Grete, is perhaps one of the principle themes in this short story. Once a close and loving relationship between Gregor and his sister, their bond slowly erodes over time as she grows older and the family matters continually worsen on account of Gregor's metamorphosed appearance. In the beginning of the story, Grete is the only one of the family members that makes an attempt to care for Gregor and seemingly to pity her brother's condition. Gregor's mother is shocked by his appearance, she cannot bear to see him, and his father is hostile and vi

The Influence of Humanism in Renaissance Art

If one were to gaze upon the statue of "David" by Michelangelo (1475-1564), they would notice the high esteem in which the human body was portrayed. The sculpture almost appears to be a person itself, so real, proportionate, and beautiful that it is uncanny to fathom that it is an interpretation by an artist. The pride and appreciation exhibited in the work of art for the human physique demonstrated the humanistic ideas of the Renaissance. Humanism was not only a "respect for the individual, independent thought ", and the human body, but was an intellectual movement of the Renaissance based on the study of the antiquities and humanities (Charlton 48). Of the many ideas that surfaced during this period, such as secularism, realism, and individualism, humanism dominated, influencing even these concepts. Humanism was the emancipation and rediscovery of the individual, and it left an immense impact on literature, philosophy, and the arts. Humanism, "with its respect for the classical past,

A Separate Peace and The Fault in Our Stars

"Everyone is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody." -Mark Twain This quote by Mark Twain' reveals the dark truth of human beings; we all have imperfections and there's a part of each of us that we choose to hide. This side of ours is where our negative emotions, faults and shortcomings reside. This dark side is also seen as an alias to our inner demons, which we constantly fight in different ways, lest it conquers us and lashes out. We all have this darker side as proof that we are humans and thus incapable of achieving perfection. Amongst the purest of people, their vile side exists if not near the brink of extinction. This darker side is a burden that all humans must carry; it is something in which we fight in every single moment of our life. By continually defeating this darker side of us, we grow stronger and more adept at surviving the challenge which we call life. Two literary sources that substantiate this quote are "A Separate Peace," by John K

Tsar Alexander I and the Growth of Russia

Tsar Alexander I, an intelligent, handsome, benevolent and aspiring leader, ascended to the Russian throne in 1801 to become one of Russia's greatest reformers and military leaders. The Tsar who defeated the French Empire was profoundly influenced by their domestic and foreign affairs, leading his vision of Russia to enhance and protect the revolutionary ideals of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution. Initially open-minded to these western philosophies Alexander was inspired by his role models to spread these ideas, therefore becoming a "European" rather than just a Russian ruler. Thomas Jefferson who thought quite highly of Alexander, wrote from Monticello in 1806, It will be among the latest and most soothing comforts of my life to have seen advanced to the government of so extensive a portion of the earth and at so early a period of his life a sovereign whose ruling passion is the advancement of the happiness and prosperity of his people; and not of his own people

The Identity Development of Student Athletes

A college student-athlete is defined as a participant in an organized competitive sport sponsored by the NCAA and the member institution at Division I, II, or III. Student-athletes cope with challenges and pressures as they try to find a balance between being a student and an athlete. Upon entering an institution, student-athletes are given the responsibilities of managing multiple roles. First-year student-athletes are expected to meet the demands of a college student in addition to those of an athlete in a new and unknown atmosphere. (Etzel, Ferrante, Pinkney, 1996; Parham, 1993). The transitional experiences of a first-year college student paired with playing at a higher level of skill, concerns of injury, and dealing with conflicts among teammates and coaches add stress (Adler; Adler, 1987; Etzel, Ferrante, Pinkney, 1996; Miller &ump; Kerr, 2001; Parham, 1993). The unique challenge for many student-athletes is to find balance between these dual roles and the pressures from coaches

Lab Report - UV Radiation on Bacteria

Title Ultra-violet radiations prevent the production of red pigment, Prodigiosin in Serratia marcescens by inducing mutation in its DNA. Hypothesis Maybe the disappearance of red color in serratia marcescens is caused by the UV light which causes mutations in its DNA. Prediction If UV light mutates the DNA producing prodigiosin, then red colonies of bacteria will no longer be produced. Independent Ultraviolet radiations (placed on four quadrant of petri dish, with exposure to each quadrant of 10's, 20's, 30's, 40's). Dependent Color change and survival of Serratia marcescens. Swallowtail Butterflies - Adaptations to Color

Abstract The purpose for this experiment, is to test the adaptations of color and to see if it influences how quickly the Swallowtail butterflies take to heat up to its desired temperature. This is an important experiment because it helps you get an understanding of adaptations, interpreting data, expanding into additional studies, and learning how physical traits affect butterflies ability to regulate body temperature (Lab Manual, page 41). The hypothesis for this experiment is, The darker the butterfly the quicker it will take to heat up, the lighter the butterfly the slower it will take to heat up. Our method for this experiment, was to have three different butterfly species in color. We had the Polydamas Swallowtail (dark=black), Giant Swallowtail (light=pale yellow), and Pipevine Swallowtail (control=light gray/blue). We put each Swallowtail butterfly next to each other under the lamp and after every five minutes we would check the temperature change and record our data. Our res

Separation from a Loving God

In his popular book "The Reason for God," Tim Keller dedicates an entire chapter to answering the question, "How Can a Loving God Send People to Hell?" While this paper is not a report on Keller's book, the same concept will be explored and discussed in the following pages. As a Christian, this is such an important issue to address because in today's culture, there exists a prevalent idea that God's love would not allow Him to justly send people to Hell. Unfortunately, in order to keep from offending masses of people and risking church membership and attendance, the modern church seems to have turned from the truth Paul wrote about in his letter to the Romans and other churches. It has often been said that "instead of shaping our desires to fit reality, modern man tries to control and shape reality to fit our desires"" (Keller). When considering the issue of a loving God sending people to Hell, it is evident that modern man has taken from Scripture only the verses and concepts that fit

Violence and the Grotesque in American Literature

"I suppose the reasons for the use of so much violence in modern fiction will differ with each writer who uses it; [nonetheless], violence is strangely capable of returning...characters to reality and preparing them to accept their moment of grace" - Flannery O'Connor From a rather simplistic point of view, both Shirley Jackson's, "The Lottery" and Flannery O'Connor's, "A Good Man is Hard to Find," could be considered as grotesque and cruel stories in which violence takes place randomly and totally unreasonably. However, through this paper, we will analyze the function of these grotesque and violent elements in order to compare both stories and evaluate how they fulfill different purposes through their use. Grotesque is definable as " the aberration from ideal or from accepted convention, to create the misshapen, ugly, exaggerated, or even formless...[It creates] deliberate exaggerations of caricature...accidents, and failures of the everyday wor

Priciples of the Hot Air Balloon

Hot air balloons are the oldest, successful flight technology, and its flight relies on Archimedes' principle of buoyancy and Ideal Gas Laws. Air inside the balloon is heated, causing gas molecules to disperse and achieve a lower average density. The density gradient of air inside the balloon and air outside allows resultant buoyancy, as long as the density of air trapped in balloon is lower than that of surrounding air , . The heating to achieve lower density in the trapped air of the balloon is done through the use of fuels, with the most common being propane fuels. Propane is preferred over other hydrocarbons because its low boiling point allows a consistently higher vapor pressure for a given temperature, and is therefore a more efficient fuel. Hot air balloon is still used for recreation and scientific experiments, including Cosmic Microwave Background studies and astronomy. With the high number of uncertainties in steering balloons, it is crucial then to investigate the factors

Standard Progressive Matrices

Standard Progressive Matrices Goal To access the abstract intelligence of the participant using the Standard Progressive Matrices. Basic Concept The standard progressive matrix is a non-verbal test developed by John C. Raven in 1936. It is generally administered upon the people from 5 year old to elderly. It contains 60 multiple choice questions that is of completing different pictures according to different level of difficulty. It generally measures the spearman's general ability. Thus first we need to know what Spearman's theory of intelligence is. Spearman's theory of intelligence originally originated with the work on children's performance in school test. He observed the simple fact that children's performance in all seemingly unrelated subject in positively correlated. Spearman gave the concept of G factor means the general intelligence. The a priori truth behind his theory was that any cognitive task can be comparing other cognitive tasks. He used the method of facto
