From the Perspective of the IyiThe events of Hara-kiri can be contextualized within a span of time that saw both the end of decades of war and the unification of Japan. The Shogun of the newly unified of Japan had the momentous task of designing a social and legal system that would prevent the usurpation of power by the many fringe, yet powerful daimyo. Believing in the Machiavellian idea that "fear is simply a means to an end, and that end is security for the prince," the Tokugawa Shoguns implemented a series of policies in which petty crimes were met with harsh punishments. To any astute observer, such a legal system is sure to breed hypocrisy. Indeed, it was during this time that the bushido code's emphasis on honor dwindled. To most samurai during this time, the bushido code's high standards of honor were unobtainable, making disobedience common and sometimes unavoidable. But to acknowledge disobedience meant certain death, and was thus unheard of. It was in this unjust milieu that the events of Hara-k |

A Basic History of QuebecThe wars between the French and the English lead us to the Quebec we have today. Quebec was founded in 1534 by an explorer named Jacque Cartier. In the time Quebec was a French possession called New France. New France was a source of income for france. Many years passed and conflicts accrued between the French and the British. The final battle on the plains of of Abraham decided the faith of Quebec. The British won and Quebec was now a British empire. From this moment on the French people of Quebec tried to regain their power and have succeeded because we could see the result today. Children and Bipolar Disorder DisorderThe term "bipolar"" came from putting together the Latin roots bi, meaning two and polus, which pertains to a geographical pole, like the North and South Pole. Thus, bipolar means two poles or two extremes in mood or behavior. A Greek physician named Aretaeus of Cappadocia from the second century A.D. was the first person to recognize symptoms of bipolar disorder. Aretaeus observations of patient's mood swing symptoms are what are now known as bipolar disorder. He wrote, "The patients are dull or stern; dejected or unreasonably torpid (sluggish), without any manifest cause. " (The Everything, p. 2) Later in history, scientist Richard Burton published his book "The Anatomy of Melancholia" (1650), which gave Aretaeus' work widespread recognition. Burtons work became a standard reference in the mental health field and he was regarded as the "father of depression"" (The Everything, p. 2). French doctor Jean Pierre Falret linked suicide and depression in 1854 and distinguished his patients |

The Comprehensive Good - Contrasting Beliefs on VirtueWhile Classical Philosophy tangles with many questions, one could surmise from the readings that the universal goal of most (classical) philosophers was to answer the question "what is the best life?" A logical presumption would be that nearly all human beings aspire to live the best possible life, and undoubtedly that life would be measured in happiness. The quest to "live the good life " is unique to the human experience in that, unlike beasts or plants, we do not simply yearn for mere survival, but instead strive for the best possible life. For the purpose of this paper, we will look at Aristotle's interpretation of how to achieve the "best life,"" or "comprehensive good." Similarities and differences between Aristotle's beliefs (pertaining to the best life) and those of Socrates and Saint Thomas Aquinas will also be examined. Socrates contends in Book II of the Republic that there are three kinds of "good and that the finest of the three, the one in which justice belongs, is that |

PTSD as Seen in the Movie "Speak"Abstract The National Violence Against Women Survey found that 18% of women reported experiencing a completed or attempted rape during their lifetime (Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). More than half (54%) of rape survivors who responded to the survey were younger than age 18 when they experienced their first attempted or completed rape. In this journal, the writer used qualitative study to recognize the psychological symptoms of rape trauma in Melinda, a major character in American Movie Speak. In addition, in the plot, she becomes a survivor that has been sex-assaulted. Keywords: Rape-Related Posttraumatic Stress Disorder(PTSD), Sexual Abuse, Trauma, Violence Introduction Trauma is defined as a psychological threat or assault to a child's physical integrity, sense of self, safety or survival or to the physical safety of another person significant to the child (Vermont, p 170). International Business Machines (IBM) - Turnaround to GrowthAt the beginning of the 1990's, International Business Machines (IBM), was on track to success falling in as the second-most-profitable company in the world. Soon after the end of the fourth quarter of 1990, IBM began its descent as the company's internal structure started crumbling out from underneath it. By 1993 IBM's CEO John Akers was relieved of his duty, and was replaced by Lou Gerstner. Gerstner was the first outsider CEO in the history of IBM, which gave the insiders an uneasy feeling that the company was soon to be split apart and sold (Applegate, Austin, Soule, Soule, and Soule). Once taking charge Gerstner soon realized that IBM's value was not in pieces, so he remapped his direction and began his attempt at saving the company. Many things contributed to the rebuilding of IBM, which first started with the loss of John Akers as CEO and the take over by Lou Gerstner. At which point Mr. Gerstner revamped the business strategies by ensuring that the customer's needs would come firs |

Economic Labor Markets and UnemploymentUnemployment is a serious issue within any economy, becoming arguably the most measured and discussed economic indicator. Unemployment is best described as "when a person who is actively searching for employment is unable to find work." (Investopedia, 2010). Unemployment, particularly the unemployment rate, is often the most cited measure of the health of the economy. This response will examine the different types of unemployment present within the Australian economy, outline how unemployment is measured and will discuss Australia's recent record with unemployment. Richardson (2006) argues, "Unemployment is not a precise concept. This is true even in countries, such as Australia, where most production of goods and services is done through the formal economy, and most people work for wages." To get the most accurate calculation of unemployment possible, a division of the Australian Government – the Australian Bureau of Statistics - adopts the standard internati |

Native Americans - Respecting Their Role in American HistoryNative Americans played a big role in American history. If you think about it, they were the first Americans. In the letter "The First Americans,"" the Grand Council of Fire writes a letter to the mayor of Chicago explaining as to how the Native Americans are being wrongly interpreted in American history. The Council explains how the Native Americans had a much larger role and are not necessarily the villains. They then go on to explain in detail what it is that the Native Americans did in history. The Grand Council does a good job in naming specific places and events that support their reasons as to why Native history should be re-told. In "Educating Sons," Chief Canassatego writes a letter to the Virginia College about how in order to live in their society, they need to be independent. The Chief then goes on to explain what it is that the men need to know and how the men that came back from the Virginia College had not exceeded their standings. Out of these two excerpts, I strongly feel that the Grand Council does a more effective job at giving more logical reasons and they convince me more that Native Americans |

Climate Change and the Arctic FoxThe report, "Climate Change Science: An Analysis of Some Key Questions," explicitly asks if the occurrence of global climate change is actually an issue worth addressing. The consensus is that "most of the observed warming of the last 50 years is likely to have been due to the increase in greenhouse gas concentrations accurately reflects the current thinking of the scientific community on the issue" (Oreskes, 2004, p 1686). This is basically stating, that yes, climate change is a concern and it is certainly caused by anthropogenic factors. So if climate change is occurring, one may ask how different species will be affected? Although one could argue that every species will be affected, in this paper, the focus will be on future of the arctic fox species in regards to global climate change. As one of the top predators located in the arctic, depending on the type of food present, these foxes are both hunters and scavengers, mainly consuming lemmings and moles. While this animal |

Gender Equality in High School AthleticsIntroduction The issues of gender equality in youth sports and the ethical dilemmas that surround it are widely known and have been extensively discussed by scholars, educators, parents, athletes and administrators. Despite the amount of dialogue and discourse on the subject, there remains little consensus and much disagreement on how to deal effectively and manage equal opportunities for both sexes in school sports. From an athletic administrative perspective, managers must negotiate the situation of whether or not to allow girls to play on boys' teams, and if so, then should they also allow boys to play on girls' teams? The athletic administrator must also understand Title IX, its implications and how it shapes school funding, policy and attitudes. According to Hums and MacLean (2009), "athletic administrators should consider how they respond to Title IX in terms of corporate social responsibility and whether they are providing opportunities because the law mandates it, or becau |

The Evolution of Women After World War IIDuring the Great Depression of the 1930's, the United States government encouraged American women to stay home and refrain from taking jobs away from men. Times were hard, and for women without a husband, the times were almost destitute. The women of those days were truly soldiers in their own right. Women of honor and courage who endured things that a woman of today would never endure. The role that women had then were very defined and they had little means to improve their situation, if they chose to do so. The role of women in the family shifted significantly, after the World War II era. The career and education aspects of women have evolved as well as women's epitomes of marriage. Many have suggested that this era begun a change in the way women raised their children. After a long journey, today we have women doing great things in the workforce, and men have put on aprons and are raising the future of America. This change in the day-to-day lives of families required the husband acc |

Genesis, Adam, Eve and the New TestamentIn reading and comparing the two literary works of Genesis and the New Testament, Genesis represents the beginning of how the earth was created and laid the foundation of how God wanted the universe to operate. The New Testament represents where Jesus is incarnated. God reveals his promises through the birth and death of Jesus Christ. In the beginning, the world is dark, but the incarnation of Jesus brings the world full circle, bringing light to the world along with hope for redemption. In the beginning, Adam and Eve had broken the trust of God and sent mankind a curse that would later revealed as the shedding of Jesus' blood, would be the only way to redeem mankind. The book of Genesis starts with God first assuming he is the creator of the universal and mankind. In Genesis we see one of the first things that God establishes with humans made in his image is order. God creates man and then woman. The first male that God creates in his image is named Adam and he creates Eve the woma |

Famous Poets and the Poetic ConsciousnessOf the poets we've explored in class, the one I felt have most connected to is Paul Valéry. I became absorbed with his thoughts and writings on literature, many of which I find to be applicable to art, and all of which have helped give me some perspective on this course. Valéry writes, "Thought is hidden in verse like the nutritive virtue in fruit. A fruit is nourishment but it seems to be nothing but pure delight. One perceives only pleasure but one receives a substance." Of the poet specifically he writes, "In the poet The ear speaks/ The mouth listens;/ It is intelligence, vigilance, that gives birth to dream;/ It is sleep that sees clearly;/ It is the image and the phantom that look;/ It is the lack and the blank that create." It is clear that Valéry is highly cognitive of his presence as the poet within his poetry. Valéry gives us a glimpse into his consciousness in the poem "The Footsteps". In "The Footsteps" we |

Bowland and Morus - The New BiologyIn their 2005 book, "Making Modern Science: A Historical Survey," Peter J. Bowler and Iwan Rhys Morus claim that a "new biology" came into existence in the second half of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and in fact, the word "biology" itself was not commonly used until this time. Prior to this period, the study of living things had been primarily conducted by naturalists utilizing observation in the field then categorizing their findings, and physicians utilizing dissection to study anatomy and physiology. But in the late nineteenth century biological scientists started an effort to steer their profession out of the field and into the lab. They wanted to raise the prestige of their science to equal the physical sciences such as chemistry and physics, whose knowledge came from experimentation. Early biologists wanted to know not only the physical traits, habitat, or feeding and breeding patterns of a species, but their internal structures and how they wo |

The Early Colonies of Virginia and MassachusettsThe Virginia and the Massachusetts colonies differed greatly in terms of society and economy. Virginia was a Southern colony while Massachusetts was a New England colony and with this came great divergence. Massachusetts had a society that was based on strict Puritan religion and an economy that relied on trade while Virginia had a society that was loosely structured on more relaxed, Anglican values and an economy that relied on tobacco. Virginia's economy depended on staple crops and land speculation. Large-scale farmers bought up Virginia's ample real estate because Virginia had the benefit of a climate that was conducive to agriculture. The warm weather and the plentiful rainfall enabled the Southern colonies to grow exotic staples that were prized by the mother country. Tobacco ended up being extremely successful in Virginia and farming it eventually took over most of the land. With the tobacco industry booming, Virginia depended on African or Indian |

Ivan Pavlov and the Classical Conditioning TheoryIn this paper, I will argue for objectivity being the best way to know the truth about (material/physical) reality. Objectivity can be defined as knowledge coming from what can be seen, touched, or observed scientifically in space and time by the material body (including the brain). The truth about reality needs to be supported by some logical explanation, data, or fact, which is provided through objectivity. Science is known as a subject that involves experimenting to find a "truth." Most of what we know about the earth and our bodies come from historical experiments and discoveries. Without gathering facts and data, we are not able to have the knowledge to find the truth to our reality. I find the study of human behavior and mind to be very interesting as it explores the truth about humans, which is what led me to choose psychology as my major. Most of what I lear |

What I Learned About Life from the ElderlyIn the wee hours of the morning, his wife was on the floor next to her bed, convulsing, foaming at the mouth and tightly clenching her fists. All the immediate family members rushed to see what the commotion was all about. I felt extremely hopeless and helpless as I saw my grandfather attempting to aid my grandmother. The hours seemed like days as we waited anxiously in the cold waiting room of the Emergency Department. A Grand Mal seizure, the doctors later explained, was the cause of her illness. Following this seizure episode, she required day-to-day special care that we were unable to provide. The toughest decision we were faced with was placing her in an assisted living facility. That event redirected me to consider a different career path. The rehabilitation center near the corner of Flagler and thirty-second avenue was called Floridean Nursing Home. As I walked into the place, the smell hit me like a wall. The strong odor of cleaning supplies doing a poor job covering up the uri |

Inside the Complex Brain of Ed GeinEd Gein lived a suppressive and introverted life on his family's farm, somewhat isolated with his frail older brother and dictatorial mother; a woman who taught him that sex was unclean, sinful and abomination to God (Ed Gein). His mother Augusta, viciously beat him with a belt whenever she thought he was committing and impure act. Despite the emotional and physical abuse, Gein adored his mother (Case File- Ed Gein). He called her a devout Christian and a saint. However, he had little adoration for his father who was unattached, verbally abusive man to the entire family. Then suddenly, Ed's entire family died off ( first his father, then his brother (in a mysterious accident that was later believed caused by Ed himself), and then his mother (who suffered a series of strokes)) (Case File- Ed Gein). Ed then ran the family's 160-acre farm by himself. Physically speaking, Gein was an average man with a regular build, brown hair and light eyes. He was simply seen as a shy, harmless and ecce |

George Orwell - Shooting an ElephantThe short story of "Shooting an Elephant," by George Orwell, begins with the author describing his position as a police officer in Lower Burma. The young officer was "an obvious target and baited whenever possible" (Orwell 1). The local Burmese hated the European rule that had taken over their land, and, as Orwell stated about the officer, "the insults got badly on his nerves" (1). The officer was upset by all of this, but was still in favor of the Burmese ruling themselves. Even though he was young, he had made up his mind that "Imperialism was an evil thing" (Orwell 1). The officer, though, still had to balance the strong disgust for the British and the locals that tried to make his job intolerable. The officer was called to assist with an elephant that had escaped his handler overnight and was causing many problems in the village. The Burmese were defenseless, as the elephant had already "destroyed someone's bamboo hut, killed a cow and raided some fruit stalls" (Orwell 1). After arriving to the area, the officer noticed this had happened in a very poor area of the village. He was looking for help from the locals on the |

Canada's Prime Minister Mackenzie KingAs a country, Canada has had many positive changes throughout its history and one man who made a significant impact on the country was Prime Minister Mackenzie King. King made many tough decisions towards harsh problems that Canada faced throughout the beginning of the 1920's to the late 1940's. Whether it was a riot or a drought, Mackenzie King was there to support Canada and try to make the best decision he could to fix the problem. He helped Canada through many different issues such as, economic, war, and cultural problems. Without Prime Minister Mackenzie King, Canada would not be where it is today. He made many things possible for Canadians all around the country. Today, Canada is known as a strong independent country, rather than before, when Canada used to be known as a part of Britain. By the Prime Minister's strong-minded attitude, he was able to change many things about Canada in a positive way. Mackenzie King started out as Canada's first deputy minister of labour in 1900, |

Working With and Understanding Children and Young PeopleThroughout puberty, young people develop emotionally, physically and socially. The Tanner SMR Model (1962) allows professionals to gauge the degree of pubertal maturation that has occurred among adolescents, regardless of chronological age. The scale has five stages and includes the appearance of pubic hair, development of breasts, occurrence of menarche among females, degree of testicular and penile development and the appearance of pubic hair among males. This was useful in Child Y who over a twelve month period showed physical signs of growth and adolescence as well as a change in his friendship group and experimentation with drugs, smoking and alcohol. Coie (1999, p.779) states that "the behaviour of a child during adolescence has a direct correlation with their environment." However, Giedd (1999, p.861-3) argues that 'during adolescence the brain experiences a second wave of overproduction of grey matter in the frontal lobe which is the thinking part of the brain and deals w |

Karl Marx, Class Struggle and InequalityKarl Marx argued that capitalism (where the wealth was in the possession of a few people who used their wealth to buy labor and create even more wealth for themselves), would become increasingly reliant on the workers. The increasing reliance would give the workers the power to revolt, with the poverty of the proletariat being the motivator. While this is a simplification, and in terms of economic theory it holds merit, it does not take into account many of the other influences in France at the time of the Revolution. The real issue was far more complex and involved the convergence of numerous factors, including the social differences in the country, the financial situation, political issues, poor leadership and the influence of the enlightenment. To understand the way in which all the different factors converged is necessary to look at the situation immediately prior to the revolution. Prior to the revolution the social structure of the country was divided into three estates; the cler |
