Education and Affirmative Action

There has been prejudice towards those who are not whites males in America since its founding in 1776. It was a time when blacks could be taken from their home lands and brought to a foreign land to be bought and sold as legal property. It took women over a century to receive the right to vote with the passing of the 19th amendment in 1920. Women and minorities were given constitutional rights that were refused to them for many years, but they continued to be discriminated against. Because of skin color or sex, people were not treated as equals causing a clear uneven playing field in education. The Civil Rights movement was making great strides when affirmative action was first introduced in the early 1960's. The practice of affirmative action has been at the vanguard of intense debate more than any other time in its fifty-year period. The emotions involved in the controversy over preference are powerful and often partisan. A growing number of programs including quotas, preferential

Broken Promises - The Affordable Care Act

The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) commonly known as "The Affordable Care Act" (ACA) or "Obama Care," is a United States federal statute signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. The purpose of the ACA was to increase the quality and affordability of health insurance and lower the uninsured rates by expanding public and private insurance coverage. In the public relations push for President Obama's takeover of the American health care system, he promised that those who like their insurance could keep it, premiums would decrease, and no one would lose their doctor. We know now, those were all lies told repeatedly and never questioned by a media that is looking the other way. Another promise Obama made was the ACA would not fund abortions. This in fact, nestled within the individual mandate in the Act, the portion requiring every American to purchase government – approved insurance or pay a penalty, is an abortion premium mandate. This mandate

In the Kingdom of Big Sugar by Marie Brenner

To fight for something you believe in - is right or wrong - may not always be an easy task. "In the Kingdom of Big Sugar" relates a hard-fought American legal battle. The three main elements are Edward Tuddenham, Joseph Klock, and the government. Edward Tuddenham was a lawyer who viewed himself as "a fearless advocate for farm workers ". After graduating from Harvard Law School, he ended up going to Texas and later began working on a case that would last longer than 10 years. This case was against big sugar, specifically Alfonso "Alfy"" Fanjul and his brother Jose "Pepe" " Fanjul. Tuddenham believed that the workers were paid unfairly, given the type of work was so dangerous and brutal that no American would dare to do the job. When he talked to a few Jamaicans, whom he was representing in the big sugar case, they would tell him that they would work eight or more hours a day, but would only be paid for about four hours of work. Although he represented all of the workers, only a few ste

Symbols of Heaven and Hell in The Scarlet Letter

Heaven and hell are two places that are the same yet different. They are the same because they are both "places" in which one will go after they die. However, whilst heaven is for those who do not sin and are good people, hell is for those you sin, and just overall bad people. In "The Scarlet Letter," heaven and hell can be seen as the city and forest. Both are which are two separate worlds in the novel. Also, there is somebody who is stuck between heaven and hell, Hester Prynne, the main character, who lives in the middle of the city and the forest. In "The Scarlet Letter," Hawthorne creates three worlds, all which can relate to heaven and hell; one being the forest, the city, and Hester's cottage. One of the mini worlds that Hawthorne creates is within the forest. The world that is created within the forest is a place for which the outcast reside. One of the ways in which you can earn a spot in the forest is to do something against what the Puritans believe. Hester, the mai

Portia Lucretia Simpson-Miller - Prime Minister of Jamaica

Portia Simpson Miller is a woman who may not be familiar to those living in the United States, but in Jamaica, she is a woman of power. Portia Simpson Miller is the Prime Minister of Jamaica who has been portrayed as a woman of bravery and valor. It is hard for a woman to become of power, especially in a poor country. Therefore, this essay will be discussing her terms of power locally, nationally, and internationally. Also, discussed will be her socialization, her ethics, her entry into her position, and also the significance of her term as an empowered woman. The Most Honourable Portia Simpson Miller was born on December 12, 1945 in Wood Hall, St. Catherine into a working family. A working family could be middle class here in the United States, but in Jamaica Wood Hall is considered a "very poor section of Jamaica." Portia went to Marlie Hill Primary School and graduated from St. Martin's High School. Portia then went out of the country beginning in Miami, Florida to obta

The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES)

The ground-breaking Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), was released on September 1st, 1985 and to this day is the best selling video game console of all time. The NES revitalized the gaming industry and set the standard for subsequent consoles of its generation. To this day, the NES is still played by thousands around the world because of its charming and innovative games that still hold up as some of the most fun and challenging titles ever made. Now that the hardware is so old and harder to find, it is sought after now more than ever. Some of the games are virtually impossible to find because of how scarce they have grown over the years. People have also tampered with some of the games' data as well, bringing fresh material and bright beginnings to some of the adventures the games have to hold. Since Nintendo no longer manufactures these products, collectors have had no way to obtain some of the ridiculously rare, altered versions, or unreleased versions of the games on an

A Summary of Housing Policies in Singapore

In recent years, the world is experiencing an exponentially increasing population. The birth of the world's seven billionth baby in 2011, marked that the world population has reached an astonishing number. Such explosion of population led to varied social problems, including the housing crisis. According to the UN statistics in 2005, about 1.6 billion people live in substandard housing and 100 million are homeless. Thus, affordable and decent housing has become one of the most basic human needs, yet it is in alarmingly short supply throughout the whole world. The situation was even worse in the past. A number of Singaporeans could not afford their own houses and lived in an unhygienic and crowded condition in the 1950's. However, since the 1960's, when Singapore's Housing Development Board was established, the country's public housing programme has grown to become one of the largest and most effective in the world, which significantly improved the housing condition in Singapore. As of

England and the New England and Chesapeake Regions

It's true that England was responsible for the early colonization of the New England and Chesapeake regions. By 1700, the New England and Chesapeake regions grew into distinct societies due to political complications, religious deviation and migration patterns. New England and Chesapeake were influenced by political tribulations, rebellions, and inability to defend each government. Chesapeake and New England began to each get involved in some sorts of political problems both individually and with each other. The Chesapeake region especially, lacked the sense of unity and togetherness that was vital in keeping a stable political system in New England. Leaders in the Chesapeake were often considered "vile commanders with their golden promises made all men their slaves"" (Doc. F). The structured rule of New England clashed greatly with the disorganized ways of the Chesapeake. Rebellions within the colon

Offshoring the American Dream

With globalization, moving labor in developing countries became the usual practice for big corporations in the 20th century. They use it to cut down the cost of production, and many workers in developing worlds are happy to be able to work and provide for their families. The companies are often vilified for exploiting the workers and providing poor working conditions. In the article "The Noble Feat of Nike,"" Johan Norberg shares his research on factory workers in Vietnam and offers their point of view on outsourcing. A young female Nike worker, whom Norberg interviews explains that the conditions in the factories are far better than in the sunny humid fields (189). She is satisfied with the wages, and is grateful for the lifestyle she can now afford. Her new income allowed her to buy a car and fix her house, and her son doesn't have to work instead of going to school, like every middle class family in America. American prosperity was built on the backs of middle class families, with

Women, Pregnancy and Graves' Disease

In this cross-sectional study, 78 infants born to mothers with autoimmune thyroid disease were investigated to evaluate the impact of maternal thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy and postpartum thyroid function. Infants born to healthy mothers at the same time were set as controls. Researchers also focused on identifying possible maternal, neonatal and environmental risk factors that cause early infertile thyroid dysfunction. The patients were 78 newborn infants delivered to mothers with autoimmune thyroid disease. Of those newborns 57 were born to mothers with Graves' Disease and 21 were born to mothers with Hashimoto thyroiditis. Seventy-seven of the mothers had Graves' Disease or Hashimoto's Disease before pregnancy, only one mother developed Graves' Disease during pregnancy. Researchers collected heel capillary blood from the infants when they were 3 days old, to detect there TSH levels. If the infants TSH levels were over 9 miu they were called back right away and the others were

Ethics of International Commercial Surrogacy

Globalization and expansions in artificial reproductive techniques have opened up a new range of chances for infertile couples. Transnational gestational surrogacy with monetary remuneration is one of the products of medical tourism in the twenty first century. International surrogacy is defined as a method of assisted reproduction whereby a woman from one country agrees to become pregnant for the purpose of gestating and giving birth to a child for others to raise in a different country (Kumar, Inder, Sharma, 2013, pp65). There is no international regulation of surrogacy agreements, only conflicting national laws that causes ambiguities and removes safeguards for both the surrogate and intended parents. Opponents of international surrogacy claim that surrogacy is essentially "renting out the womb" and is an unethical practice because it exploits, infringes on surrogates welfare and commodifies women. Humbyrd breaks down the major arguments opposing surrogacy to be "the welfare a

Individual Reflection - Working in a Classroom Group

Working in a classroom group, I realized that motivation is a major aspect that people require to facilitate their working and coexisting together. The main aim of a group is to use synergy to produce the best results as a group, after efforts from all the members. This means that every individual in the group has to contribute wholeheartedly towards the group, and the activities of the group. For this to happen there is the need for there to be motivation in the group. However, one major challenge for most groups, ours included, is usually how to keep all members motivated. When we joined the university and were assigned into groups, we seldom knew each other. Although most people would have rather been assigned groups with people they had befriended, this did not happen. We had to settle for people we had not met before. At first, things did not set off very well. We had a few interpersonal and communication challenges. However, our group leader made sure that we co-existed peaceful

School Budget Cuts - Affecting Students and Teachers

Slicing of a school budget is a topic individuals in the education field know all too well. It seems as if when a worse-case scenario comes about, we can always resort to cutting the budget for schools. Because schools have plenty of money to blow, correct? Wrong. Cutting school budgets has repercussions larger than we can imagine. We aren't just canceling an avenue used to further education, like sports and music programs. When a school system cuts their school's budget, no matter what department is cut, multiple people are heavily affected. After research, I learned that school teachers and paraprofessionals are affected first hand, of course. However, the students are always the people that receive the worst end of the stick. Out of all the students affected by budget cuts in the education department, students from lower income areas are in fact affected in a more severe way than students who come from families from middle and higher classes. Why is this? Not only will I explain why

English as a Lingua Franca (A Common Language)

Although the number of the world's lingua franca keeps on increasing daily, a lot of researches have proven that a few people understand what a lingua franca is, causing them not to see its significance. According to the United Nations Educational Scientific and cultural Organisations in 1953 defined a lingua franca as a language that is used habitually by people whose mother tongues are different in order to facilitate communication between them. Regardless of their number increasing daily, English keeps the lead. Sabine (2011) clearly stated that the number of people using English as a lingua franca keeps on increasing daily more than any other language. Its number increasing is linked to its significance in fields like technology, business, while socialising, plus a lot of others. Even though the influence of English as a lingua franca to technology is significant, a lot of people rarely appreciate it. Anna and Elena (2009) deduced that using English as a lingua Franca leads to the

Losing Everything - The Story of Kindertransport

Imagine being ripped from your life and inexplicably thrown into another. This jolting new reality would include a different family, country and personal history. This is what the Kinder (plural for the children who participate in Kindertransport) had to experience when they were relocated from their homes in Germany, Austria, and Czechoslovakia to Great Britain in order to escape deportation to concentration camps. These children were given the chance to escape their countries before they were ripped from their homes to be sent to concentration camps. However, their experiences weren't exactly a walk in the park. Kindertransport was in some aspects a positive experience, but there were psychological drawbacks to separating children from their family at such a young age. The home conditions the Kinder had to endure in Britain depended on their foster parents. There were some considerate people who attempted to provide a home experience for the children most like what they had grown up with. For example, some parents would feed children a diet more suited to their religious needs, and also sent them to Jewish services. However, there were some children who

Expectations of Happiness in Of Mice and Men

George and Lennie dream of one day having a farm with rabbits and alfalfa, but this dream, no matter how simple, leads to experience sorrow rather than joy. Since they are both somewhat powerless to control their fate, their dream, which once inspired them to push through hard times ultimately mocks them for their hubris. Steinbeck based the title of his novel, "Of Mice and Men," from a line of Robert Burns' poem "To a Mouse." The poem fits the theme of the novel, as it describes how dreaming of what could be often leads to pain, despite our best expectations for happiness. George and Lennie's aspirations hold value but this was not enough to bring them to their goal of owning a farm. The great value of George and Lennie's dream is that it gave them motivation, something to look forward to during rough times. I

Concepts of the Senate Debate

July 1, 1867, marks the date that Canada confederated into a nation dedicated to promote democracy. Canada would be governed by a Parliamentary system consisting of an upper and lower chamber of legislation. The House of Commons, being the lower chamber is made up of elected representatives from across the country, democratically voting upon bills. The upper chamber, the Senate is made up of 105 individuals specifically appointed by the Governor General to represent certain geographical areas across the country. The Senate is primarily responsible for providing a "sober second thought" on bills passed on by the House of Commons. The chamber revises the bills, and occasionally passes it back to the House of Commons if amendments are needed. However, the Senate has become the target of public and political criticism because Canadians have begun to demand transparency and Government accountability. While some argue that it is time to abolish the institution entirely as it is much too cost

Alibaba - Global Trade and Sourcing Company

Alibaba is a global trade and sourcing company that has just gone public with the largest IPO in the history of the United States. Jack Ma is now the 34th richest person in the world with a net worth estimated at $22 billion (Forbes"). These are big strides for the man who started this company with a small group of people in 1999. Before Jack was among the most elite people in the word he was an English teacher in Hangzhou, China. On September 19, 2014 Alibaba set the record for the largest IPO in United States history; raising over $20 billion in the first day. Alibaba is now worth more than eBay and Amazon combined with a market capitalization of $219 billion. This signifies the current strength of the Chinese economy, many investors though are worried that in 2015 the growth of the company will significantly slow as the Chinese market begins to crumble. The growth of this company in recent years has allowed it to gain more than 70% market share in Chinese e-commerce. Although Alibaba had the largest IPO in United States history this was not the first time that the company went public. The company Originally listed on the Hong Kong exchange in 2009 befo

Troll Bridge by Neil Gaiman

Neil Gaiman's short story, "Troll Bridge," is a retold fairy tale story that takes on a modern stand on the traditional fairy tale with a different twist and dimension to the story. Gaiman made use of a single human, instead of a goat who twice manages to convince the troll that there will be more of him, meaning more experience, to eat next time he crosses the bridge if he lets him go. Jack, the main protagonist in the story oddly enough, finds himself on the bridge yet again and his third encounter with the troll goes rather differently because he finally allowed the troll to eat him up. Him showing up thrice, and unexpectedly, shows how Jack cannot escape his fate of eventually being eaten by the troll, and that his sign of resignation to the troll implies the realization of his selfishness, hence his inner ugliness is further manifested externally when he, himself becomes a troll in the end. Jack first encounters the troll at seven years old when he discovered a path in the woods

America, Japan and Dropping Atomic Bombs

The United States and Japan were already in a real detente during World War II. The duration of the war was taking much longer than expected due to Japan's prideful resistance like the kamikaze pilots which was the cause of many Japanese soldiers deaths. The United States had limited amount of options, if the United States would have invaded Japan, they would have lost many men and also would have killed many Japanese soldiers. Not only that but the citizens in Japan were preparing for an invasion if it were to happen the United States also would have had this consciousness on whether or not there would have succeeded in the invasion. Japan had already lost most of their supplies. They had very little if any left for them to use. Some believed that the United States could have spared them since it seemed as though they might have been in the direction of surrender. Despite whether or not Japan was ready to surrender, it was the right decision by the United States to drop the atomic bom

Prejudice in the Novel Snow Falling on Cedars

"Snow Falling on Cedars," a novel written by David Guterson, is set in 1954 San Piedro Island, just north of Puget Sound. The novel follows the trial of a Japanese American man named Kabuo Miyamoto who is accused for murdering a local fisherman. Throughout the trial, the reader is introduced to Kabuo's wife and a journalist, who the reader learns used to have an intimate relationship with each other. San Piedro Island is a small isolated place where Japanese descendants and non Japanese live in strictly segregated based of social differences. The application of creating an explicit prejudice feel, not only in the courtroom during Kabuo's trial, but also in the relationship between Kabuo's wife and the journalist reveals the ignorance and hate that much of America felt after attack on pearl harbor, and how it affects society and justice as a whole. The novel begins with the introduction of a court room containing members of the local community. The room is c

Good and Evil in Lord of the Flies

Looking at the world today through all of the different media outlets, it is hard not to see evil as a force taking over our society. With all of the war, destruction, and injustices, it is almost as if it weighs out the good. In William Golding's "Lord of the Flies," evil is seen as not only a recurring problem in the world, but instead as a trait that lies inside of each of us. He analyzes human nature as a whole, but also more specifically the way that evil manifests itself in each of us. The central conflict exists in the human desire to follow rules and the desire to act out violently in order to obtain power or ranking. Golding creates characters that are easy to identify with so that the audience can more easily come to terms with the ideas of both good and evil in society. The protagonist, Ralph, is representative of the desire to keep peace and order while the antagonist, Jack, represents the human impulse toward savagery and the instinct to gain power and status in any g
