Putting an End to Animal Suffering

Animal mistreatment in the pharmaceutical industry has gone too far, causing the deaths of many animals. Animals in every way are mistreated and Americans should put a stop to it. Animals to an extent are just like humans; they have feelings and families. People should fight to change how animals are used in the name of science. Every day animals are fighting for their lives, having no power or any sort of communication. Many animals are enslaved, beaten, and used for research. Researchers that want to advance in medicine and science believe that killing an animal is more important than ethics and morals but they are wrong, because animals are living creatures like humans, and killing an animal is like killing a human. Putting human life over animals is unethical because animals are living beings. Killing and experimenting on animals is immoral and it should stop. Animal life is not above human life but they should be treated equally. Animals are genetically different than humans; howe

Basic Steps to Math Success

"Memorizing math facts is the most important step to understanding math. Math facts are the building blocks to all other math concepts and memorizing makes them readily available"" (EHow Contributor, 2011). To clarify, a math fact is basic base-10 calculation of single digit numbers. Examples of basic math facts include addition and multiplication problems such as 1 + 1, 4 + 5, 3 x 5 and their opposites, 2 " 1, 9 " 4, 15/5(Marques, 2010 and Yermish, 2011). Typically, these facts are memorized at grade levels deemed appropriate to a student's readiness "usually second or third grade for addition and subtraction and fourth grade for multiplication and division." If a child can say the answer to a math fact problem within a couple of seconds, this is considered mastery of the fact (Marques, 2010). Automaticity " the point at which something is automatic- is the goal when referring to math facts. Students are expected to be able to recall facts without spending time

German Acupuncture

The use of alternative medicines is rising not just in the United States, but worldwide. Due to the popularity of such treatments, the efficiency of these alternative medicines is often questioned. While the effectiveness of certain alternative medical practices can be determined through the use of randomized control trials (RTCs), it can not only be difficult, but lack efficiency with most alternative medical practices. Acupuncture is an ancient art of healing that dates back to at least 2,500 years. It has been widely practiced in China and many other Asian countries. Only recently has acupuncture made its way into the western world. Acupuncture accentuates on the natural healing of the body. It involves stimulating acupuncture points by the insertion of very fine, solid, metallic needles. Acupuncture is gaining popularity as numerous claims are being made to its validity and effectiveness. Although many studies and experiments regarding acupuncture have been done, the scientific ba

Gay Marriage - A Basic Human Right

"God does not make mistakes, so trust that when something end ups in your past, they are there for a reason." Gay marriage has already become a hot topic than it ever was in the past. There are many contrasting opinions about homosexuality. However, there is nothing wrong with gay or straight marriage because it is a natural basic human right. Furthermore, gay marriage should be accepted because marriage is chosen by people who are in love, and homosexual couples would be an acceptable way to aid orphaned children and give them loving homes. Recently, we can easily to see that gay marriage is still a hot debate in the United States when only 19 states have legalized same-sex marriage. During Barack Obama's second election, he received a huge wave of support for his promise to help same-sex marriage gain legality. Ten years ago, gay marriage was really unacceptable to Americans, but people fought and sti

Completely Randomized Design (CRD)

In my Completely Randomized Design (CRD), I will be exploring whether seeing a paragraph in full-text or by-one-line-at-a-time in an online typing game have an influence on my word-per-minute performance. I am inspired to perform this study because as a slow typer, Ive been trying to improve my typing speed and accuracy in order to have optimal productivity when executing my newly acquired hobby of subtitling Thai films in English. Ive been playing on the website TypeRacer to improve my typing skill. Here, I can race with other online players to make my learning process more fun. The typing game works as followed. When you start a game, by default, a paragraph of text appears on the screen with a timer. When the countdown reaches zero, you type the text. When you have typed the last punctuation on the text, then you are taken to the result window displaying your word per minute, time, and accuracy. Recently, I learned that there is another mode available. By default, the game shows the full

Transitioning from High School to College

As a senior in high school this year, i have come to the realization that there are so many difficulties we as students face in our final year of high school. Senior year is one of the most years of some of our lives, but with it come the stresses of heading off to college. Although some teachers claim that they prepare you for college, most students would not consider it a job well done. The processes one must go through to make it to college and have a successful career is one of the hardest parts of the transition from high school. The beginning transition to college can be one of the most difficult, the application process. Applying is so difficult for future undergraduates because when going off to college the students get to choose their future school. In grade school through high school, students have no choice on where they  go to school; the schools the students attend is almost always based on where that person lives. Some apply for schools based on their major, others to pa

The Ever-Increasing World Population

The human population has continued to grow through the decades. The increasingly large number of people that have become apart of the world population has become a major problem. The consequences of the world being overpopulated has numerous effects which include: Environmental effects, depletion of natural resources, effects on the economy, food and water instability, and mass species extinction. Without a solution to the rise in human population, by the year 2020, 8 billion people will live on earth and by the year 2050, 9 billion people will inhabit the planet.   Such an increase will bring about an overwhelmingly large usage of the planets resources. This result could bring about massive destruction for humans, animals and the planet.  With solutions to the ever growing population increase, reducing our population to a sustainable level will ensure that all species that inhabit planet earth will have a chance to survive. Solutions to maintaining world population will decrease overcrowding and human poverty. "Solutions to sustaining population growth include: education which warns people about the effects of overpopulation, family plann

Concepts of Social Facilitation

At some point in life, most of us have found ourselves in situations where we knew many eyes were staring at us, others around us were performing the same task at the same time, or people were cheering us on as we were about to perform a task. Whether it be a race, singing a song, or even writing an in-class essay, somehow the presence of people have an effect on our performance and what results is that either we perform the task better than what we had expected or we choke under pressure. People often think that our performance is determined by either hard work, genetics, or a combination of both, however there are many more determinants that influence the quality of our performance. One factor on how we perform is through social facilitation. This idea states that our performance can be greatly influenced through the mere presence of other people, whether this presence is real, imagined, or implied. When we perform a task, the presence of others can affect our levels of arousal, in

Surviving the Bereavement Process

Bereavement/Grief Paper This workshop was absolutely mind-blowing and eye-opening. I had no idea that death can cause so many issues and that there's no right or wrong way to grieve. I was very shocked to hear that the loss of a loved one can have a lifelong impact on the living. I thought by now the impacts of death would be controlled; however I wasnt aware of how important the grieving and bereavement process truly is. This workshop has made me aware to the issues that plague my generation and understand how to be a part of the solution rather than the problem. The workshop did a spectacular job of opening doors for discussion and understanding regarding the impact of death and the loss of loved ones. The workshop was able to provide resources to become an advocate of bereavement awareness. There were numerous discussions and main points throughout the workshop. The one that really made an impact on me was when we watched the clip from the movie "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.

The Well-Being of Animals

In a world where over a hundred and fifty billion animals are killed yearly, one question remains: do animals have rights? (adaptt.org) In scenarios where people have pets, it seems obvious that these animals do have rights because they are treated as another member of the family. But what about the cattle or chicken that are bred their entire lives just to be someone's dinner? Animals can be said to have "rights" or to be worthy of moral consideration for multiple reasons but only to an extent. Even the smartest animals (besides humans) like dolphins and chimpanzees have their limitations. When looking at the two pillars of morality - reciprocity and empathy, it is easy to consider animal rights. But humans have evolving morality which sets a higher standard than that of animals. This is because humans are capable of concepts such as religion and culture which advance morality to a whole new level t

Overview of Location Quotients

Location quotients can be extremely helpful in many ways. For example if I am looking to move out of town to find a new job or want to relocate, or franchise out my business. It would be best to use this formula to figure out many things. Like if there are already a large number of lets say for example construction businesses established. A construction company would see and conclude that if the new potential relocation county is expanding and growing with more people moving in as well as other businesses then there will be a more abundant amount of construction job opportunities, and decide to move there. Versus moving into a small, slow pace growing county with not to many new businesses or people moving in then will result in little work available. In order to take a risk like that you would have to look at other quotients first. To see if maybe manufacturing is on the rise slowly or not worth moving into that county at all. In this assignment I will estimate Location Quotients for

Fast Food...Good Food?

To put it plain and simple, fast food is, at least partially, to blame for the obesity epidemic and resultant deaths, throughout America. The convenience of making and quick and cheap drive-by at the McDonald's down the street has resulted in increased sales at all fast food joints around. The convenience and unbeatable prices make fast food meals an appealing option. News flash: this convenience and low pricing will only catch up with consumers in the form of high hospital bills due to heart attacks or other medical conditions caused by obesity, and the inability to actually get out of bed to conveniently get a fast food meal anymore! Fast food is killing the nation. Eric Schlosser, an author known for his New York Times best seller, Fast Food Nation, gives it to America straight by sharing the harsh reality with all of the fast food-eaters out there; fast food has changed the way Americans eat and is a major factor for many health concerns such as obesity, diabetes, heart disease and

Movie Night - Staying Home or Going Out?

We all have a list of favorite movies etched in the back of our minds. Not all of our favorites were seen in theaters and or at home. Though each of them memorable in their own right. Some of the reasons one would choose one over the other are total price, movie selection and preferred atmosphere of movie night. A night out in town is certainly not cheap and the same can be said about watching a movie at the cinema versus viewing one at home. Let's say a group of four went out and drove to the nearest cinema. Movie tickets plus snacks and beverages could easily top fifty dollars if each person had their own beverage and two people shared the large tub of popcorn. Compared that to renting a DVD from Netflix for $7.99 and a couple of microwaveable popcorn bags priced at le

Notes On Writing Well

"For ultimately the product that any writer has to sell is not the subject, but who he is"" (Pg. 5). This quote is a transaction that explains that the writer is suppose to write with interest so that the reader will read more. The reader will enjoy reading the book and will be enthused for the writer of his field. This is the personal transaction that's good for writing. "But the secret of good writing is to strip every sentence to its cleanest components" (Pg.7). When you have simplicity in your writing its easier to understand the book. When the book is to the point and easy to understand more people will want to read it. This helps the writer make his writing better and blunt. "Fighting clutter is like fighting weeds- the writer is always slightly behind"" (Pg.13) Clutter is something that ruins a person's writing. Clutter can affect your writing because it is in the words you use to write and the ways to cut out clutter would be by reducing long clauses to shorter phrases, eliminate run-ons, use act

Religion in the Era of the Slave Trade

The era of slave trade was perhaps one of the most embarrassing episodes in the documented history of mankind. Starting from the 16th century all the way up until the 19th century, the slave trade was an active form of commerce and highly profitable at that too. Approximately 12 million slaves were transported during this time period. The inhumanities and cruelties that slaves experienced are something that in today's society would come as a shock to most people but in that time and under those circumstances people of that time would consider it as a necessary evil. They were forced to output inhuman amounts of labor against their will and when they disobeyed or simply gave out they were met with punishments from their masters. Naturally when people are faced with obstacles that they perceive to be insurmountable they turn to some form of higher power for guidance. In this case, the 12 million slaves turned to various different avenues of religion for help. Before the slave trade, the

On Gun Control

Humans naturally seek protection, comfort, and safety. There have been many shootings within the past decade that have caused the people of the United States to be in fear of their lives; Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and Aurora, to name a few. When innocent lives are taken away, people will be sad, and more importantly people will be scared. A person's life can be taken away within a matter of seconds, how could you not feel afraid? It is those violent attacks on our society that cause the people within it to feel insecure and vulnerable, and they will more than likely do anything to want to feel safe again. It is difficult to go from these tragedies to the topic of gun control, as it is a touchy and complicated matter. Recently, gun control laws have become stricter in our society, with the intent of protecting the nation from harm and violence. However, our right to bear arms as stated in the Second Amendment should not be limited and should not be taken away, because though it may see

The Causes and Effects of Divorce

A few states require couples who file for divorce to take classes in order to educate them about their decision. Considering that I am a child of two divorced parents, I believe that this is a mandatory judicial step that should be enforced in all areas of the country. The classes will provide several possible outcomes of this decision. While many couples are given the choice of pre-marital counseling, I also believe that these courses should be declared vital in order to get married. From my knowledge, the causes of a possible divorce are not discussed during pre-marital counseling. However, I believe this should be the most important part of class because it will help couples to make better decisions within their relationship. The causes of divorce are adultery and stress, while the main product of this is the effect it has on children. Many

Football - The Ultimate High School Game

The wheels on the bus go round and round - straight to victory in Phoenix. First we had to take the 100 mile trip there. Feeling the heat from all the players crammed into the bus yelling and moving back and forth not being able to control the adrenaline pulsing through their veins. Looking past the excitement and jitters, every player knows what they have to do at the end of the day for the team to get a W. The closer we got to the school the more all of our nerves set in. The bus became silent as everyone focused on the goal ahead. Pulling our game faces on as we unload off the bus. We were at the field. The air was warm, the sun was setting, and it is time for Friday Night Lights. Every second that ticks away till game time, the more and more intense everything gets. Sitting in the locker room during pre-game hearing all the people walking into the stadium and knowing how packed this game is going to be really. It makes your stomach turn from all the nerves and some teammates throw

The Pledge Controversy

The phrase "under God" violates the establishment of freedom of religion guaranteed in the First Amendment because the phrase was added to the pledge in 1954 in order to prove that the United States was a godly, humble nation. However, religious diversity in the United States is very prominent, and not everyone believes that a spiritual figure of authority even exists. Therefore, it is controversial to say that the phrase "under God" is representative of the entire nation. Though at the time, with the Cold War underway, the addition of this phrase was appropriate for helping maintain the sense of morale, unity and strength in the United States; however, because of the variety of religion now present in the United States, the phrase "under God" is in violation of the First Amendment, and it contradicts the idea that we were founded on the idea of freedom of

The Culture and Athletic Art of Rugby

For most fans, the most important aspect of a rugby team is its win-loss record. However, for someone interested in how human society works, and in particular how organizations are structured, create an ongoing culture, manage conflict, support or discourage change, adapt to their environment, and distribute power among different stakeholders, a rugby team provides an ideal case study, a real-life laboratory for understanding how individuals relate to each other within the boundaries of an organization, balancing needed stability with necessary change. As an organization, it encompasses the key dynamics of larger Australian society in a way that can be relatively easily studied, given the small size and clear boundaries of a team compared to the nation as a whole. A football team seems simple given that it has a single formal goal "to win games." However, each team has within it the entire range of dynamics that help organizations pull together for a goal, along with the entire ra

Ethnic Differences and Achievements in Education

Assignment Assess the importance of school factors such as racism and pupils' responses to racism in creating ethnic differences in achievement. (20 mks) Response There are two types of racism that goes on in schools (internally). Individual racism is based on labelling and teacher racism where pupils of different ethnicities other than white British are seen as being far from the ˜ideal pupil'. For example, black pupils are seen as disruptive and Asian pupils are seen as passive. Therefore this will lead teachers into thinking that there is no point in dealing with these pupils and will give up on them as they are seen as ˜hopeless cases'. On the other hand, institutional racism is based on the way established institutions such as schools and colleges operate in regard to different ethnic minorities. A sociologist found that school governing bodies often gave little or no priority to race issues and did not deal with racist behaviour. For example, nothing is done abou

Summary on Planning Fallacy

Imagine you are an incoming college student with a full load of classes and that, at the beginning of the semester, you are assigned to do a book analysis that is due at the end of the semester. You see which book is appointed for the assignment and realize it is an easy read. In this case, you tell yourself, "Oh that book doesn't seem so bad, I can finish reading it within a week and have the analysis written that same weekend; no problem!"" However, the unforeseen pile up of assignments from your other classes and social commitments have made it difficult for you to get around to that book analysis. Before you know it, the assignment is due next week and you have not even started the first chapter. You have now been victim to what is known as the "planning fallacy." The planning fallacy is "the tendency to overestimate how much we will be ge

Narratives of the Human Condition in Children's Literature

Children's literature has been perceived in many perspectives of society throughout American history. Some of which would say that children's literature is the universal truth under the human condition. While others express the pleasurable aspect, being, their own choice in such literature. The specific style, in a sense, is not accepted as appropriate for some children, in the eyes of some. Others, whom view children's literature as appropriate reading for children argue with the knowledge of a culture's notion of what a child is. But we forget how much literature is actually out there, from realistic fiction, to biographies, to poetry. There is generally one main goal of literature, however there are abundant amounts of ways that it is shared to all ages. The basics of children's literature is an integral part of literary, along with cultural and media studies due to the diverse intellectual disagreements. Every piece of literature is based upon a theme. Themes, such as ideas, which brings us back to the "universal truth ". These themes or in other words, ideas, must apply to reality. However, each theme has to be determ

The Native American Trail of Tears

Native Americans were on this continent long before anyone of British descent. Cherokees were cruelly removed from their homeland, where they had resided for centuries. The voyage of removal is known as the Trail of Tears. The effects on the Cherokees Indians before the removal before and during the removal, and after the Trail of Tears were devastating. The Cherokee Native Americans were a distinct people. When the Cherokee spoke, they did so one at a time. After the speaker was through he or she would fall quiet, and listen to the other. Tone and Irony in the Ballad of Birmingham

In the nineteen sixties numerous Civil Rights marches started at the Baptist church in Birmingham, AL. This church was an important spiritual building for the Black community and a regular gathering spot for Civil Rights coordinators. To interrupt meetings and church services, members of the Ku Klux Klan would often call bomb threats in to the local authorities (Pruitt1). The "Ballad of Birmingham,"" written by Dudley Randall in nineteen sixty-nine, is based on the bombing of the Birmingham church on September fifteenth nineteen sixty-three. Tone and irony is utilized throughout the poem "Ballad of Birmingham " to illustrate the consequences of a mother's decision, and her responsibility for the safety and protection of her child. In the nineteen sixties, both black adults and children took part in freedom marches and rallies. It was not uncommon for a child to want to partake in such events like the little girl in the poem. In the first stanza, the child pleads with her mother to
