Drill Sergeant Miller

I was sitting in the middle of a parade field on my green duffle bag surrounded by many other potential soldiers in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. We heard the sounds of many busses stopping behind us, I heard the rustling of the grass as three shadowy figures approached the area where I was sitting. One of the figures was short and stocky, the second was a lot taller than the first, but according to his shadow he was very skinny, and the last figure was about average height, but very muscular. The voice that bellowed like a foghorn in my ear telling us to "Get the hell up now!" was like a bolt of lightning to my spine. When I heard it I rushed up and turned around to see his face. His piercing stare looking at me like he was going to cut me in half with his stare. His snarl was terrifying. His left lip was coming up and all you could see was a bright gold tooth glistening from his incisors. I'm thinking to myself, "I'm a twenty-one year old man, and I'm scared as hades, and I don't know why." As I stood in the position of attention look

Color Guard - The Best Four Years of My Life

Blood dripping from my purple, swollen lip as the unrelenting wood smacks it again. This is the definition of dedication. As I force my arms to continue spinning the rifle, I realize I'm hooked, like a heroin addict, I can't get enough. The world of color guard consumed my whole existence for four years. The teams countless hours of practice led us to unnerving performances, constant challenges to be better on the rifle, saber and flag and more often than not different points of view. My selfless habits, expertise on the equipment, and good communication skills with my fellow members incorporated me as a successful and vital member of the Western Hills HS Color guard. My selfless habits yielded many opportunities for advancement in my successful involvement in the group. For three of the four years that I was a member of the group, I was in a leadership position. It seemed as if I lived at the band hall for the four years I was a member of the color guard. By putting in after hours a

Proper Eating Habits

Obesity affects the lives of millions of people in America every day. Not just adults, but people of all ages. Though in many cases, overweight and obesity can be a genetic problem or a lack in obtaining willpower, there is still much more to it than that. It has to do a lot with the way we think, feel, and act. Most overweight people consume more food than they even realize, and alongside that, they spend most of their days sitting around, in front of a computer, in a car, and on the couch, leaving little to no room for exercise. Another cause is the way we feel and in return handle emotions leading many people to eat out of spite and anger, or depression. Most people know what the definition of obesity is, but what most people don't know and really need to know is the cause of it. Physically speaking, obesity is caused by consuming more calories than the body needs most commonly by eating a diet high in fat and calories, living a sedentary lifestyle, or both. However, I find that

What's Your Purpose? Laziness at Work

You know what really grinds my gears? Lazy workers! I strongly dislike when people half do their job at work. I work at Burger King sometimes as a weekend closer whenever I go home and this one specific worker, who always end up working me, is so lazy and always half-do her job. She never does anything. It bothers me so badly. Her name is Stacy. She is tall, dark-skinned, and has bushy hair. She usually gets off an hour before Burger King closes. So, she is my pre-closer. She is supposed to make sure all of the dishes are washed except the few pans we have left with the burger meat in it. She is supposed to make sure the lobby trash is emptied and the tables are clean. Also, she is supposed to empty the shake machine out. I cleaned it and broke it down myself when I closed, because she never did it right. It's not much she has to do because I do all of the hard work. I hate going home on the weekends, knowing she will be there as my pre-closer. She is nasty, junky, unorganized, an

Research-Based Action

Chickens are being raised on chicken farms for profit. They are raised for their eggs that they produce. The way they are treated are terrible and need to change. Chickens shouldn't have to be miserable when they are the ones making profit for farmers. They should at least be treated like one would treat their own family pet. Chickens shouldn't be tortured after all their hard work. They should be admired instead. A mature chicken is called a hen and an immature chicken is called a pullet or chick. They have four or five toes and are known to have more bones in their neck than giraffes. They don't chew their food because they don't have teeth so they swallow their food whole, part of their stomach work to grind their food up. They are the closest relative to the t-rex. There are about 150 different types of chickens. They come in several different colors and patterns. They are classified as birds but can't maintain a flight; the record of a chicken in air was thirteen seconds. They ca

Reading - Living Through Words

People usually do not expect to gain much more from a book than a story. For others, a book can leave them with a story plus ton of other feelings and thoughts they never thought they would have. Physical acts of writing bring words to life through the senses. There is truly much more to a book than one can imagine. Selectively describing an event will give a person insight to the actuality of it. Descriptiveness can be found through sight, touch, and hearing. Physical acts of writing bring the words to life through the senses. In a story "How to Mark a Book" by Mortimer J. Adler, he writes: "Well, the physical act of writing, with your own hand, brings words and sentences more sharply before your mind and preserves them better in your memory" (18). When a person hears words, they begin to feel and imagine, bringing those words to life. They might imagine themselves in the situation they are hearing or reading about. When someone writes, they think

The Benefits of Being Underage

If only I could still fall under the underage group! I remember getting the little toy in the kid's meal with my sister. It was the joy of my life with that one little toy that came with the fries and the burger. I was always eager for my eighteenth birthday to arrive. But there is always that one day where the time comes and we must get some kind of image of our reality. All of a sudden that baby that used to be cradled every night to sleep is now mommy and daddy's big girl/ boy. Long talks with the parents about boyfriends and sex, having to pay adult price admission, and just "bills...bills...bills," that's when I knew this stuff was serious. I remember the first time my dad sat me down for the "serious talk"," I was 12 back then. At first I thought it was him going to ask for a favor. When he told me to have a seat, I knew it was something serious or I got in trouble. He talked to me about how I'm in the age where boys don't look at girl as a f

Existentialism - Classifying Significance

Existentialism is a philosophy that accentuates personal subsistence, sovereignty and preference. It is the analysis, that individuals classify their significance in life, and attempt to craft rational decisions in spite of existing in an irrational life. Existentialism focuses on the uncertainty of human existence, also the opinion that there is no purpose or justification at the heart of reality. It possesses' that, as there is no God or any additional inspirational power, the only way to respond to this oblivion is by accepting existence. Therefore, Existentialism thinks that people are wholeheartedly unbound and ought to take personal responsibility for themselves, even though with this liability comes an insightful agony. It consequently highlights action, liberty and resolution as elementary, and seizes to show that the only way to rise above the fundamentally bizarre state of civilization is by applying our individual freedom and choice. Frequently, Existentialism as a movement

The United States Post World War II

After World War II, American lives changed drastically from the stock market crash of 1929 and the depression and then entering World War II. In the 1950's when the youth population increases, modernized entertainment technology is introduced, and white collar workers rise; they create the perils of mass culture. The Perils of Mass Culture that emerged in 1950's and are still with us to this day created the American stereotype The Veterans who are returning home from World War II felt the need to get married and have kids to pass down their name and life lessons. This created the baby boom generation; in 1959 the population of kids under the age of fourteen was over fifty million and that significantly impacts society in many area of life. The government responded to the enormous increase of kids by putting them through public schools to educate them and teach how to be hardworking, respectful, and disciplined when or if parents could not do so. Instead of children being influenced

Successfully Manning the Hotel Front Desk

On October 14th 2014, we were introduced with another activity related to the hotel industry. Ms Rita was the guest speaker of the day and she had prepared a very thorough presentation with information regarding what goes on behind the eyes of a normal guest in the hotel. We were introduced with the many different departments of a hotel such as the front office. The front office has a few sub departments like concierge, security, reservations, cashier, bell service and registration. Ms. Rita also told us more information on what goes on behind the scenes of a hotel that really intrigued the class, as we did not know of the many things the hoteliers had to do and are in charge of. The activity and knowledge introduced on that

The Gym

I've spent the past 15 years sweating, working, and pushing myself to the absolute limit. Just at the moment where I think that I have nothing left, I break passed my limit and exceed to even further lengths. More than a third of my life has been spent either working out or playing sports in the gym. It's a place where no matter what I'm going through all of it just vanishes like if I'm in a completely different world. Sports runs through my family's veins. As early as 3 years old there hasn't been a year to where I haven't been playing basketball or in a gym for some sort of reason. Throughout the years that I've been growing up I've noticed how I always turn to either working on improving my basketball skills or working out when I'm stressed out and just need time to myself. It's more than just somewhere to get away, it's somewhere that benefits me physically

Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler

"The Parable of the Sower," depicts a post-apocalyptic world in which the citizens within the United States live within walled cities. However outside of those cities, rape, murder, theft, etc run rampant to the point where only those within the city walls are safe. With the amount of trouble and danger that exists within this society, it would seem that the majority of the people would be sensible and understanding of their surroundings. Unfortunately, this is not the case. The only one who is truly sensible is Lauren Olamina, the main character of the book. She understands or at least tries to understand what is going on in the world. In order to live in a city, such as the one presented in the Parable of the Sower, having a sense of unity would be necessary. However, the city is still as separate as ever. Mrs. Sims and Mr. Moss are prime examples of this. Mrs. Sims was an old woman who lived by herself and ridiculed every person who was not like her. She had a racist att

The Storytellers - The Men Who Wrote the Gospels

The word "synoptic"" is defined as "presenting or taking the same or common view ", or when taken from the literal Greek translation, it means "seen together"." The first three gospels of the New Testament of the Bible, the Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, and Luke, are referred to as the "Synoptic Gospels " because they each contain many of the same stories, oftentimes having similar wording and being in same sequence as each other. Although the gospels are so identical in more than just a few ways, they present the problem of which gospel was the first to be recorded and what the possible sources that each gospel depends on are, called the "Synoptic Problem ". There are several hypotheses as to which gospel was written first, some advocating that Matthew was written first, called Matthaean Priority Theory, or Luke was written first, called Lucan Priority Theory, and that the others used one of them as a main source. However, the most widely accepted theory, named the Four-Sou

College Students and the Debt Monster

Student debt has recently become a rising concern for many students entering college. College costs have risen to new heights making most families unable to afford a college education. Students that graduate are not guaranteed a career but can expect a hefty bill. College in America is typically viewed as a worthy investment, but for the majority of students financial benefits from attending college no longer outweigh the costs and risks involved. During senior year students apply to colleges to pursue various careers, but they all have a common goal of graduating and landing a well-paying job. College recruiters bombard students with statistics such as students who graduate have an average 15.2% pay increase per year (Clemmitt, Student Debt). Another deceptive statistic states that a person who earns a four year degree will earn on average 1.1 million more than someone with just a high school diploma (Clemmitt, Student Debt). Sounds like a no brainer doesn't it? Colleges use the appealing stati

Chasing Blame - A Study of The Crucible

When it comes to community entertainment, nothing beats a good, old-fashioned witch hunt. It's so much easier to just accuse someone of witchcraft and have them hanged then to actually deal with your problems. Towns from New York to Savannah participate in this outrageous behavior, and when it comes to films depicting such grand dissipation, one of the best is Nicholas Hytner's "The Crucible." Based on Arthur Miller's play of the same name, "The Crucible" is set in the small settler town of Salem, Massachusetts in the early 1690's, a town with many young ladies looking for love. In their desperation, the girls consult a slave from Barbados named D'Jouba who is believed to have ancient voodoo powers. According to the opening scene of the film, the girls are attempting to con

Intelligence, Biology and the Environment

Assignment Critically discuss the different ways sex differences in intelligence are influenced by biological and environmental factors. Response The sex differences in intelligence between men and women have been argued by many researchers over the past decades. However, there is not much substantial evidence to support many of the theories concerning sex differences in intelligence. The results that demonstrate male superiority in some aspects of intelligence cannot be considered to be significant as most of the scores proving to be in favour of the "strongest sex" range from small to medium, effect the size of the difference (Maccoby & Jacklin, 1974). This essay will consider some of the biological and environmental factors that may affect sex differences in both sexes based on previous research. Theories in this area range from evolutionary, differences in the brain size, high testosterone levels in males to socioeconomic environmental factors that may have some effect

Putting an End to Gang Activity

I believe juveniles join gangs for many different reasons. A gang can make a child feel secure and like they have a real family. It can give them a prestigious feel or ranking. Many youth join for fun, excitement, protection, and/or money. Children who come from poverty get involved selling drugs for profit. "Social, economic, and cultural forces push many adolescents in the direction of gangs" (Bilchik 1998). In certain places children are recruited in a strongly focused way. They don't think they have an option. Some are the children of a member and are considered born in. The psychological profile of a gang member is low self-esteem, being antisocial, aggressive, impulsive, and a risk-seeker. Gangs deal their actions by neutralizing punishments. Some children want to find their identity in joining a gang. It also helps some who have difficulty with social adjustment. Many gang members are from dysfunctional or poverty stricken families. Most are trying to hide feelings

Summer Reading Essay - In Cold Blood

Assignment If you want to know a literary character more fully, ask yourself, "What does this 'person' want?" Choose a character from one of your Summer Reading books and discuss how his/her desires affect his/her choices and actions. Response Dick Hickock is a very interesting man. Dick is a man who throughout the novel In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, can easily be seen as the epitome of a criminal. A tough, emotionless, inconsiderate, dirty, badass human being, everything that makes a criminal a criminal. Dick, a human who actually existed, believed that life could slip away at any moment, so he always thought why not do what you want with it? In his eyes, the most important things in life where money, sex, and the thrill ride feeling of adrenaline pumping through your veins. These attributes are what make Dick, Dick; they're what shape his desires, and what influence decisions, actions, and choices, they are what influence his death. Dick, although a criminal, was a simple, somewhat intelligent man. He knew what to say, what to do, and surely how to commit a crime, which seems is what got him to wh

Blood on the River by Elisa Carbone

Man needs to undergo pain and suffering to become better and stronger. Like a caterpillar wrapped in a cocoon, surrounded with darkness, it struggles to break through the barrier, then finally sheds into an elegant, tenacious butterfly. In the book Blood on the River by Elisa Carbone, the main character, Samuel, develops a better personality through his experience of the different events that occur during the adventure. Thriving Bacteria on Our Personal Computers

Abstract In order to test the belief that more frequently used area on a personal computer (abbreviated as PC) has more bacteria, the experimenters tested the amount of bacteria on different parts of a PC with respect to their frequency of use. If a part was used more often, then it would have more bacteria. To support the idea, the experimenters took samples of bacteria from the screen (group 1), the keyboard (group 2), the touchpad (group 3), the speaker (group 4), and the air (group 5, control group), respectively. The samples were put in 5 different petri dishes. Then, the petri dishes were placed in the same incubator. All other factors, such as the agar in the dishes, temperature, as well as sampling time, were kept constant. After two days, the result showed that the sample from the screen had more colonies than the samples took from either the keyboard or the touchpad, instead of the other way around. Therefore, the hypothesis was not supported. Overall, the experimenters learn

Deep Play - Notes on a Balinese Cockfight

Geertz's article is divided into two parts; The Raid and Of Cocks and Men, respectively. The Raid introduced us to his experience during his fieldwork in April of 1958. He described the problem that he met during the fieldwork; the indifference that his subjects express towards him. This indifference in particular was the wall that limits the scope of his observation. The methods that can be used to gather data are rendered useless due to the fact that he is either ignored or given the response of yes as the "ultimate nonword" "(Geertz 1973:413). He even compared the Balinese experience to the rest of Indonesia and Morocco, both of which field gave him an all-too-probing feel, the opposite of the subjects in Bali (Geertz 1973:413). The difference of treatment by Geertz's subjects during his fieldwork experiences provides an insight of the difference between the cultures of the mentioned locales. He may have encountered these differences due to the fact that he is an outsider anthropologist, and people from these cultures treat outsiders differently; some of probing curiosity, and some of controlled curiosity. He also wrote his prejudices in this article as stat

Risk and Protective Factors - Drug Abuse and Adolescents

Despite of the general decrease in the nonmedical use of legal and illegal drugs in recent years, the excessive consumption of alcohol and other drugs during the adolescence years is still a concerning social problematic. Alcohol impairs individuals in social, medical, academic and personal areas that are of crucial importance during school and university years. Adolescents in treatment for alcohol use disorders (AUDs) have high rates of comorbidity with other substance use disorders and psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia, impulse control disorders, mood disord

Images of Christ in The Road by Cormac McCarthy

The post-apocalyptic novel, "The Road," by Cormac McCarthy is about a boy and man who head south to try to have a better life. Against all odds, the boy and man are the representations of the lost morality of human kind. Heading south allows them to escape the coldness of death in the north to obtain life in the warmth of the south. McCarthy utilizes biblical allusions to depict the boy as Jesus Christ. Their inner spirit and ability to fight temptation in a world of nothingness demonstrate the role of mankind in the great mystery. McCarthy doesn't hesitate to show that the child is a Christ figure. The father had a dream in which, "he'd wakened he had wandered in a cave where the child led him by the hand " (Pg. 3). The author relates the darkness of the post apocalyptic world to the cave in a dream. The child leads the man in his darkest hour, just as Christ is believed to lead his followers during their struggles. The cave is a symbol for the post-apocalyptic world through which the child and father are tr
