The Art of Being an Effective Speaker

The most effective speakers have mastered the art of public speaking. An effective speaker is one who addresses groups of people in an organized, thoughtful way to enlighten, sway, or entertain their listeners. A person being successful is often associated with how well they communicate and how easily they could influence their audience to view things from their standpoints. Everything we do from going to a job interview, meeting a perspective mate, or hiring a contractor requires persuasion and excellent public speaking skills. President Barack Obama is without a doubt the most effective public speaker in our society today. On January 20th, 2009 at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C President Barack Obama an African-American gave his first inaugural address. President Obama looked the part for his inaugural address. President Obama had physical appearance and was well groomed. He wore a black blazer with a blue shirt and a red tie with dots of white that displayed his grati

Poetry: Common Themes and Modes of Expression

Poetry is a form of expression that dates back to BC era and continued to remain popular through modern times. Generally people interpreted poems differently, however this caused confusion upon deciding the subject or meaning of the poem. Presently, people who analyze all genres of poetry have come up with different forms of evaluation to combat any perceptive confusion. To date, the newest form of criticism is the formalist point of viewing. As a formalist reviewer, one studies the text of a poem without taking in account anything else. Such as, the time which the poem was work was written in and the influences that inspired the writer are all irrelevant. While looking at any literally works as a formalist critic, one should be able to find complexities, tensions, ironies, paradoxes and others. For instance, within One Art by Elizabeth Bishop, one can find an example of both a complexity and tension. Complexity can be found when one considers Bishop's wording on line fifteen, "I miss them, but it wasn't a disaster." Given that she repeats t

NBA, Most Valuable Player - Kevin Durant

"I had so much help. So many people believed in me when I didn't believe in myself. So many people doubted me and motivated me every single day to be who I am. I fell so many times and got back up. I been through the toughest times with my family, but I'm still standing." (Schultz) The National Basketball Association precisely chooses a player at the end of every season that they feel has exhibited talent and leadership above the rest. In his 2014 acceptance speech of the NBA's most valuable player, Kevin Durant makes a persuasive argument about how he got to where he is today using his credibility, logic, and emotion. Many would not consider Kevin Durant an author because he hasn't written a book. However, through the writing and presentation of his acceptance speech, Kevin Durant creates the story of his past for the audience, making him an author of his story and of this speech. Durant uses credibility in order to persuade the audience of his past and what has brought him

Pre-Colonial Africa

Chapter One ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPT OF CASTE It seems necessary at the outset to point out the specific features of the caste system, in order more clearly to bring out the difference in social structure which has always existed between Europe and Africa. The originality of the system resides in the fact that the dynamic elements of society, whose discontent might have engendered revolution, are really satisfied with their social condition and do not seek to change it: a man of so- called "inferior caste" would categorically refuse to enter a so- called "superior" one. 1 In Africa, it is not rare for members of the lower caste to refuse to enter into conjugal relations with those of the higher caste, even though the reverse would seem more normal. MAJOR DIVISIONS WITHIN THE CASTE SYSTEM Let us proceed to a description of the internal structure of the caste system, before attempting an explanation of its origin. The present territory of Senegal will be used h

Gay Representations on Television: Glee and Modern Family

The portayal of queer, more so gay characters in television and movies has always been quite controversial. It goes without saying that fifty years ago, an openly gay character on a television show would have been a rare sight. Slowly, as the times went by, the gay characters started to appear at first on cinema screen and later on also on television. Still at the beginning, the homosexual characters were often presented as an objects of laughter. It was obvious that they were different and that they should be laughed at. They were often lacking any character development and were just defined by their sexual orientation. At that time, it was unknown how to deal with homosexuality or how to respond to it. That is probably one of the reasons why the pairing žstraight woman and her gay best friend" has become such a trend: in its own way, it still denies the gays their own storylines and sexuality. There has been more representation to the gay community in contemporary television tha

The Physical, Social and Psychological Issues of Obesity

Being overweight is not the ideal lifestyle for any individual. However, what causes this lifestyle? Having a diet that is high in calories, constantly eating fast foods, skipping breakfast, eating large portions of food, drinking high calorie beverages and insufficient amount of exercise. The food is not used for energy but stored as fat in the body, which is a cause to weight gain. Obesity is a burden to anyone as it is associated with health problems, social discrimination and psychological issues. An overweight person will encounter health problems. According to Centers of Disease Control and Prevention more than 35 percent of U.S. adults are obese. In children, approximately 17 percent aged 2 to 19 are obese. One effect of this is type 2 diabetes. There is an 80% chance for an individual to develop this disease because of excess fat. Being overweight causes the cells in the body to change and that makes the cells harder to adapt to the hormone, insulin. The insulin carries the sug

My Passion For Competitive Paintball

Today I've been playing paintball competitively for over three years. My interest for paintball all started at the age of 11 when my friend Anthony invited me to his birthday party at an indoor field called Master zone, even though it was 8 years ago, I still remember his party like it was yesterday. My adrenaline was racing; I remember I couldn't wait to get back in the net for another game, after that day I was hooked. Every weekend I went to that same field with my step father Steve, my step fathers friend Rick and his son, my close friend Nathan. After Master zone shut down I started going to my local field called Extreme Rage, this is where I started to grow a passion for paintball, its also where I met some of my very close friends who have also been my teammates since I started playing tournament paintball three years ago, and where I learned the fundamentals of paintball. Through meeting a group of kids who have now become very close friends of mine and for

Respect in the Classroom

1. How might the value of respect be similar between team members in sports and in the classroom? The value of respect can be similar between team members in sports as it is in the classroom. Those who show leadership values and utilize them to help other classmates (or teammates) are usually well respected. Those who goof off and offer little participation are usually shown much less respect. You'll even notice that there are well-paid professional players who do nothing but bad-mouth other individuals. They might get paid well, but they are shown absolutely zero respect from those who see them. 2. How might it be different? The value of respect maybe different in reference to team sports and in the classroom as far as the goals are concerned and also in regard to individual merit. Players play sports to win, no one likes losing so the ultimate goal is to win. As a student you are trying to l

Oral Traditions in African Poetry

Many ancient scholars believed Africa had no history prior to colonialism because there was no documented evidence. Professor A.P. Newton, who was a distinguished British historian in the early 20th century, believed that there was no African history because most of the African society was illiterate before the European intrusion. ˜History', he said, ˜only begins when men take to writing.' He, as well as others who had the same opinion, failed to realize that African communities existed long before colonialism and so had their own history, even though it had not been put into writing at the time. Oral traditions have played and continue to play important roles in the history of Africa as well as its present. Songs, folklores, superstitions, etc. are just some of the things that have been passed from generation to generation orally. We see the evidence of some of these superstitions in J.P. Clark's Abiku as well as Wole Soyinka's Abiku. Both poems are based on traditional

The Huron: Farmers of the North

The Huron were able to strike a balance permitting individual and/or group prestige as well as independence while maintaining a high degree of political complexity in their confederation. Particular social features checked accumulation of power and economic exploitation by an individual or group. Other practices also served to produce solidary and integration of individuals within the community. Throughout this essay I plan on discussing how the Huron made all of this possible as well as remaining a functioning society. According to Trigger, the Huron manifested themselves in two ways: in a refusal to tolerate any one section of society possessing notably more wealth than another, and in the refusal of any individual or group to obey the commands of another (97). In this society, no family was allowed to go hungry or to be without shelter or any other basic necessities, so long as other people in the community had any possessions to share them with. The Huron expected chiefs and their

Advertising Men's Cologne

Have you ever wondered how certain companies get you to buy their products just through an advertisement? Companies use very different appeals to attract the attention they need to get a certain group to buy that particular product. Cologne is an item that uses many different appeals to reach their target audiences. That could be through a sex appeal or an appeal such as an endorsement appeal. These appeals could even coincide with one another. I have taken two cologne ads one from ESPN magazine and the other from the Cosmopolitan magazine. Although the ads are alike in some ways such as they use a few of the same appeals and the fact that they are trying to sell to men. However, they also have completely different approaches for instance how they portray their products and the type of men they are trying to sell too. First off, lets talk about their differences. I will start off with how they portray their product. This meaning what the ad looks like as a visual component. The ESPN ad is for a cologne called Drakkar Essence by Guy Lande. In this ad there is an NFL quarter back named Cam Newton standi

Women in Persuasion and Jane Eyre

"A girl should be impressed, from the first dawnings of reason, that she lives, not for herself only, but to contribute to the happiness of others," writes Priscilla Wakefield in her book Reflections on the Present Conditions of the Female Sex. This statement embraces all that is true about how a woman in the early 1800's should have behaved from her childhood until her death. A women's life is never completely her own, as she lives too delight others in looks and acts from her parent's house to her husband's, and her happiness should evolve from the satisfaction of pleasing others. The woman should be nurturing yet dependent, educated but without significant knowledge and demure but yet have the power to entertain; and of course she must be beautiful. Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre and Jane Austen's Persuasion, both advocate the ideal woman, in many ways by contrasting how the protagonists in the novels, Jane and Anne, act to how an "ideal woman" should look a

Eight Perspectives of Princess Diana

First of all, I think too much has been made of her early childhood. Her brothers and sisters had the same childhood and were not affected in an outstanding way. Diana came into her marriage, and her role, I believe, absolutely healthy. What made Diana unique from the outset was, first, her personality. If she truly had an "Introverted Intuitive Feeling Perceiving Personality(INFP)", then she had the most rare of all the personality types. INFPs are only 1% of the entire population, and this includes both men and women. She would have been, and felt, "different" from an early age. She also would have been misunderstood, and her own immediate family may have felt she was somehow different from them as well. Luckily for Diana, her personality was already one which enjoyed being with people and serving others. It wasn't difficult for her to bend to the needs of others. The problem was that she was strong-willed beneath it all, and at some point, the endless sacrifices didn't seem to squ

Statistics published show that Japan is the third largest economic power in the modern world

Men and Women in Management Roles

Introduction The contrasting differences in statistical data regarding male to female ratio in the top hierarchy are questionable. Women constitute more than half the global population, yet, their representation in management is diminutive in contrast to the dominative males. Conversely, according to recent trends there is an increase in women on boards, however at a sluggish pace. There a consequently many questions relating to this topic of 'gender in management', 'has gender stereotyping acted as a catalyst to lack of women in management?' Or 'Do men make better managers than women? Lack of Women in Management There are many interesting facts which seem bemusing in regards to the current situation with gender inequality, with women accounting for almost half the UK population, and outperforming men educationally, why is it so hard to 'explain why women continue to experience difficulties in attaining senior management positions (Ely and Padavic, 2007). Paul Robeson - Renaissance Man of the 20th Century

Paul Robeson was born in Princeton, New Jersey, on the 9th of April, 1898 to William Drew Robeson, and Maria Louisa Bustill Robeson (Wright 11). The Robeson family was no exception to the poverty stricken African American population of New Jersey (13). Robeson's father was the leader of the African Methodist Episcopal church in Westfield, New Jersey: his family was well respected. As a young boy, Robeson was fortunate enough to grow up amongst white people and was sheltered from the cruel racism the world had to offer until his late adolescent years (Contemporary Black Biography). Paul Robeson was known as "a shy kid, who did everything well, but preferred to keep in the background" (Wright 14), but Paul would not be known as "shy" later in his life, for he would grow up to become one of the most influential African American figures of the 20th century. Art is one mode of communication that can effectively and powerfully illustrate any idea. Paul Robeson was not a

Another Evening at the Club by Alifa Rifaat

In Alifa Rifaat's short story "Another Evening at the Club", the protagonist is Samia and her husband, Abboud Bey is the antagonist. The story takes place in Egypt near the Nile River. The conflict arises when Samia loses the emerald ring that her husband gave her. The story suggests that often in our society, men have almost all the powers and make all decisions whereas women are treated like tools. The author effectively conveys this theme by her use of setting and contrast. The author uses the setting of the story to imply that women had to comply with men because they were considered inferior creatures. Actually, the story takes place in Egypt, a narrow-minded society, where arranged marriages were common. In fact; women often married men a lot older than them because their family wanted them to marry a wealthy man. In other words, women were married to their husband in order to be their "tool". After marriage, w

Financing Political Campaigns

Presidential campaign laws should be reformed so that representatives can only use funding that originates from public money. There are two crucial purposes for the need for this modification; one because certain candidates are receiving ludicrous amounts of money and it is not fair for others who perhaps cannot generate such funding. Secondly, the individuals who are providing this money are not supporting their candidates without ulterior motives which results in a corrupt system. These issues can be resolved with a procedure implemented that only allows campaigns to be financed by public money. The Federal Election Commission reported that Presidential and congressional candidates running in the 2012 election cycle received more than $7.1 billion in funding for their campaigns. This absurdly high figure is an indication of the stakes involved in these campaigns and the types of people that are involved. Officials take advantage of the profits they generate whilst in power and combin

College Athletes - Pay to Play

In the world of college sports is where a lot of the money revenue that the universities get come from. Majority of the money is going in to the schools, while the rest is going towards both the coaching staff and the sports program but not the players who bring the money in. College student athletes work so hard day in and day out with their school work and along with their sport of choice. The athletes have very little time throughout the school year to find jobs with some sports requiring year round mandatory training and with trying to keep up with school. Most of the athletes struggle to make ends meet throughout the season and for that reason, college athletes should be paid. In a big name sport that draws the majority of the attention such as football, the schools are making money of the athletes in ways such as ticket sales to fan gear but the players are not the ones who get to see any of the money. Instead, the coaches and school take the money that the athletes helped brin

The Delicious World of Cajun Cuisine

The word "Cajun" originates from the term "les Acadians," which was used to describe French colonists who settled in the Acadia region of Canada which consisted of present-day New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia. In the early 1700s, the Acadians were forcibly removed in what is known as Le Grand Derangement or the Grand Upheaval. Many of the Acadians eventually settled in the marshy region of Louisiana that is known today as Acadiana. Actually, there are four regions in what we call south Louisiana that were settled by the Cajuns, each with different impacts and initiatives. Those areas are known as; Lafourche and Teche (which are the levees and bayous), Attakapas(which is a prairie), Atchafalaya Basin(the Swampland), and New Orleans area and Houma(whic

Belts and Suspenders

For as long as pants that were a bit too big have been around there has been a need to keep them held up. Throughout history and to this day we have had two options for our too-big-pants. We can wear suspenders or we can wear a belt. Wearing suspenders is not as common in our culture however suspenders have many different advantages over belts. In this paper I will give the history of both options, give the advantages of both, and then explain why the belt has won. Suspenders were first invented in the 18th century. They were originally just thin ribbons attached to the buttonholes of your pants. Before 1938 suspenders were worn as underwear and you must wear a jacket to cover them. It is said that Benjamin Franklin had worn them, and since they were undergarments it is strange that this is known about him. There was and are three models the "H", "X", and "Y" these models are named after the shape made in the back of the suspenders. The "H" shap

A Study of Sibling Rivalry in The Taming of the Shrew

Sibling rivalry is defined as "the antagonism between brothers and/or sisters that results in physical fighting, verbal hostility, teasing, or bullying" (Davidson). In many forms of media, which include books and films, sibling rivalry is a key plot device used to further the storyline. Many of Shakespeare's plays use the device of sibling rivalry, however, none as much the Taming of the Shrew. In this Shakespearean play, it is one of the most important aspects to the attributes of the plot. For example, in the play, sibling rivalry is embodied in the forms of Bianca and Katherina Minola. While in the comedy there are many plots and subplots, the roots of these stories start in the relationship between Bianca and Katherina, and the relationship they have with their father. This paper will go into depth about why Katherina initially acts like a shrew, what role Baptista plays in the sibling rivalry between both his daughters, and if Bianca really is the sweet, obedient chi
