The Art of Being Born by Marcia Aldrich

Marcia Aldrich wrote a well arranged essay called The Art of Being Born. This essay takes place in Seattle during the brisk spring of 2013. This essay is about the befuddled child that was herself, surrounding the matter of her birth. She writes this now in the effort to not only tell the birth story but make it clear that she knows the story. It will not be something that the child will have to wonder about years later, in the ways that young Aldrich had to. So she argues the fact that it is important that every child should know their birth story. Aldrich does this very well, through the usage of different rhetorical strategy's, such as imagery, similes, and allusions. She also uses her tone to get her point across to the audience. "I was born on February 26 in a dead winter. No baby pictures were taken. No baby book, where the important milestones are recorded, exists. I was installed in a wood-paneled room down a long corridor at the back of the house". This example of

The Lion Dance

Throughout Southeast Asia, there are many cultures and traditions which associate with dancing. Each dance shows the identity of a nation. For example, Lion Dance is considered a unique dance for China. But growing up in Vietnam, I experienced the Lion Dance several times. However, I never paid attention to the differences of the Lion Dance in different regions until viewing the video of the Lion Dance performance in Hong Kong. Prior to the performance, there were fireworks, which would tell me the time of the dance might be Chinese New Year. There were two lions: a white and a yellow, each was operated by two dancers. The head of the lion was distinctive with large eyes and a horn at the center. The body was decorated with many colorful ruffles of fur. The dancers wore matching pants to mimic lion legs. The movement of the lion was very quick and involved martial arts. The first dancer controlled the front position of the lion. He was able to move the lion's eye lids, ears and the mouth while his legs danced to represent the front legs of a lion. The second performer bent forward to form the back of

Hamlet Soliloquy Essay

A great amount of work was done into developing the well-known character Hamlet, who was created by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare bought Hamlet into the play as a confused prince with a mentality of a little boy. As new characters were introduced, it all changed for Hamlet. Turning him into a crazy young prince. In Hamlet's first soliloquy on page 29, Hamlet seems depressed and he views life as a meaningless use. Some how the characters manage to change Hamlet and his mentality. It's been a rough time for Hamlet considering his father, Hamlet Senior had just died. It seems that Hamlet really respected and looked up to his father, enough that even after two months of his death he could not overcome his feelings. Many believe this is why Hamlet says, "Or that the everlasting had not fixed his canon 'gainst sel

An Othello Bibliography

Heilman centers his argument on how critics have long called Othello's personality "simple," when it really is complex. He uses the murder scene in great context of Othello's personality. The part in the article where Heilman explains that after Othello's "new vision of truth"(4) he plans to execute justice on Iago for manipulating him. "But he does come to judging himself, according to his abilities; thus the spirit of justice persists"(4). I agree that in the older tradition, Iago was seen as the villain of the play, but in his point he sees that Othello is the "the unheroic tragic hero." An unheroic tragic hero meaning that although he was characterized as a noble moor, his "rather glorious affair"(6) in the ending proved him to be unheroic. There are themes of "violence and justice"(3) in this scene showing Othello's true characterization in the play. Although I don't fully understand the point Heilman makes about Othello's sexual frustration, I find the rest of the article very useful to my critical analysis essay. In t

What I Learned in Writing Class

The purpose of writing this essay is to organize what we learned in writing class. There are many elements that we need to learn in order to develop and extend our writing skills to another level. To be more specific, this essay will attempt to focus on two visual angles, which are teacher and students. I will analyze several main ideas through these two perspectives; the main ideas are precise and concise, organization, and diction. One of the most significant writing skills is to be precise and concise. Precise is not just transmitting your ideas to the reader, but also with accuracy. Concise is to deliver your messages in a short time, which means to save reader's valuable time. In order to achieve these skills, you need to set a clear goal: Who is my reader? What kind of information am I givi

The Poetry of Siegfried Sassoon

The first world war was a time of glory and gloom. Mechanized warfare, for the first time, met prehistoric combat. The lives of glory wanting youth came to fight a war that would inevitably lead to most of their death. The Australian troops mowed down, yet kept charging and charging, falling to the ground as destiny told. A poet, by the name of Siegfried Sassoon, used this time as a way to create aphoristic pieces for the people to understand what really happened. The poems "suicide in the trenches " and "prelude: the troops, " both travel a significant way in history and provide insight into the war. Sassoon, based on his knowledge of the events and being there, speaks on the hidden truths of war. The heart-wrenching euphemism, " He put a bullet in his brain. No one spoke of him again

The Tune of My Life

In a sedate theatre, I stood backstage heart pounding. My heart felt as if on the verge of stopping as the announcer's voice came into my ears. I stepped onto the stage with confidence and started to perform "Going Home", which has been practiced thousands of times by me. Every musical note jumped with my fingers rhythmically. The more excited I became, the more vivid the song became. I felt I was integrated into the tune. Once I finished the last musical note, the audience's applause flooded my ears like waterfall. At that moment, I felt fabulous as if a saxophonist finished performing his master piece. I felt the sense of my accomplishments and my eyes were filled with tears. The master piece of saxophone was played, and it was also the master piece of my musical career. Although the learning process was stressful, I would dedicate my life to saxophone. In my childhood, I aroused early every Saturday morning, poured milk into a bowl that was full of crispy cereal and ate i

Short Story: Crash! Teenage Driving

My afternoon band practice had just gotten out and there was only one thought that went through my mind as I walked out of the band room door and to my mom's car, a joy ride. I was seventeen and had just earned my license two weeks ago along with my mom's keys to the Audi for the day. My dad had shown me some country roads not long ago that were minutes away and I was more than eager to test the limits of my non-existent driving skills. As I drove, the scenery around me quickly turned from urban sprawl to country roads. Small apartments tightly packed together were replaced with large homes with trees and greenery. The complex city roads with bike paths, sidewalks and light posts were exchanged for simple two lane roads with unkempt yellowed grass on either side, along with a steady stream of power line poles. From the one time that I had previously been on these roads, I knew that these roads were made for "squirrely" driving. I turned right onto the first long stretch of road t

The Perfect Shot in Field Hockey

Field hockey is a very intense and exciting sport. It is a very physical sport but also requires mental and athletic skills. Without even realizing it, you are using math. There are three ways to score in field hockey-penalty corner, penalty stroke and field goals. There are also many factors that affect how to make the perfect shot in field hockey such as the speed of the ball, the amount of time your shot takes, your angle from the goal, your distance from the goal, the field conditions and the position of the goalie. This is the set up of the field. A corner occurs when a penalty occurs inside the shooting circle. Scoring a goal on a corner occurs often. Most times the ball is sent up to the top of the circle and the shot it taken 16 yards away from the goal. The ball must now travel 17.3 yards because it has to hit the backboard and the goal has a depth of 1.3 meters. The average persons reaction time is anywhere from 0.15s to .30s. You would want to shoot the ball fast enough so that the goalie does not have enough time to react. Using the formula v̅ =d/t you wo

Love: Unconditional and Blind

When in a relationship with someone, are we so blinded by love or beauty that we are oblivious to even the most detrimental flaw? In William Shakespeares poem Sonnet 18: Shall I Compare Thee to A Summers Day? he does just that, but implies that his beloved exceeds the beauty of a summers day because of its slightest imperfections. Shakespeare believes that his beloved is more lovely and steady than a summers day; the sun is too hot and is sometimes hidden by clouds, its beauty short-lived, however, the beauty and youth of Shakespeares beloved will not fade. He expresses love for him/her even beyond the day that death do them part. Can love today be compared to the unconditional love expressed in Shakespeares Sonnet? Love in Shakespeares day was traditional, pure and true. Men were bread winners for the family and women were submissive to their spouse. Nevertheless, times have changed and women are more aggressive in both the home and workforce. However, this should not take away from

My Dream House

I was born and raised in a coastal city in the middle of Vietnam. My childhood was surrounding by natural beauties with coconut tree, bamboo, water buffalo, crab, and fish. My big dream is to live in a small house surrounded by lots of trees, flowers, water buffalo, and chicken. My house also should be covered by a ditch full of fish and crab. My house should be located outside the city, uphill. My house must be a peaceful place for me to come back after all the stresses from daily life. In a nutshell, my house should be my own world, and represent my likes from inner and outer design. My house is very important for me because I am the pickiest person in family. I would consider location, direction, as well as surrounding views as my first point of making decision before buying a house. My house gate is made by wild flower. My house should have a ditch around the fence that has colorful Koi. If my house is also closed to a flowing spring would be fantastic. I want to make

Plato and Aristotle - Private Property

Private property are tangible and intangible things owned by individuals or firms over which their owners have exclusive and absolute legal rights, such as land, buildings, money, copyrights, patents, etc. Private property can be transferred only with its owner's consent, and by due process such as sale or gift. (businessdictionary.com) Now if we take a look at the Civil Code of the Philippines, anyone can basically own or possess private property no matter what your position in the community is. As stated in the Republic Act No. 386 article 419, property is either of public dominion or of private ownership. In Plato's The Republic, he stated there what he believes a society should be. According to Plato, in order for a community to live in harmony, each individuals should focus and only function on what they were designed to do. Plato's ideal society consists of: the Rulers, Soldiers, and Farmers, Merchants and other people. The Rulers are responsible for the decisions made on how the entire cit

Renewable Energy and Energy of Fossil Fuels

First of all I want to point out what renewable energy is. This "clean energy " is supplied by unlimited resources. Renewable energy is therefore gained out of hydropower, wind energy, solar energy, geothermal and renewable resources, like corn for a biogas power plant. All other energy sources are known as fossil fuels. A fossil fuel is, for example, oil or coal. To make these it took millions of years and a lot of pressure of the earth layers. The first difference we have already mentioned between these two different kinds of energy: the duration to rebuild those. While renewable energy is always present in sun light, flowing water, or is produced in a low time margin compared to a human life, fossil fuels take many millions of years to rebuild. Raps for example, grows in less than one year and is used to make fuel, whereas oil takes 100-400 million years. Also the reservoir of fossil fuels in limited. In the opinion of experts the duration until the resources are depleted is 40-1

America: 1920-1960

The decades between 1920 and 1960 are filled with much social unrest and are followed by a rise in public outcry that has led to the counterculture revolution in the sixties. The ideas, problems, and solutions of this time were differ from most of American history. The scale and type of issues brought about being so different, combined with the media lacking in its ability to display information publicly, has lent driving reasons for unrest to sometimes differ from reality. Many Americans were disillusioned from what the media was able to cover and government propaganda, it wasn't until videos could be made of violent acts that pacifism and distrust in what the government was doing rose. When it had come about that the "'new woman' was as much myth as reality, [it] inspired some American feminists to continue their crusade for reform" (Brink, 644). Many were unlawfully imprisoned and beaten for their efforts in social reform, and their suffragist movement was successful. Bu

Depicting the Family in Art

We are aware that majority of the Children's museum located in Downtown, San Diego is filled with a variety of interactive arts that pertain to all ages, specifically children. However, at the lowest floor of the museum, you will find an enormous vibrant table called Dinner T.V. This artwork is constructed by two San Diego based artists, Joe Yorty and John Brady. Despite the calamitous mass of the table, the warm contemporary colors including a contrast of bright colors on the table cloth is what truly catches the eye. This table cloth is silky, with a portrait of leafy vegetables and bright peppers, it is covering the olive green legs of the table. As you surround it, looking at each and every detail, you hear laughters; cries, and the sounds of children you begin to realize that there is more to the art than it seems. Underneath this massive sculpture, you lift up the cloth that embodies it and you see a cozy chair on the floor. You begin to trace after the sounds of what you heard and see traditional home videos played through projections of children and family ea

The State of Nature and Popular Sovereignty

The state of nature has different meanings to different people, including John Locke (1632-1704) and Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679). They are both the same concept with slightly varying perceptions of it. Locke basically went back to Hobbes' work and disagreed with everything Hobbes said. Locke probably did this so people would like him because some people did not like what Hobbes said because it showed the worst of what will happen. Thomas Hobbes "invites us to consider what life would be like in a state of nature, that is, a condition without government" (Lloyd). He basically says that all people are different. He says that the desire for people to preserve their own lives in very strong in most. He says that people are judgmental of others because they do not meet their expectations. He also says that "the life of man is solitary, poor, nasty, brute, and short" (Lloyd). People did not like this because they didn't like to think of life as short or brute, and, as Hob

Atonement and The Crucible

Whilst McEwans Atonement and Millers the Crucible are set in separate historical contexts whereby there is destruction taking place with different consequences, there is a need for redemption to take place as a result of the destructive actions taken by the female protagonists, Briony Tallis and Abigail Williams. Whilst some characters are seen to have atoned for their sins, such as John Proctor, the female leads are not able to do so. One way in which mans destruction is seen is through the chaos brought on a macro scale, as seen in the war and its brutality in Atonement whilst there is a societal breakdown present in the Crucible. The impeding nature of the war highlighted in Part One of Atonement and casts a shadow of a doubt over the future, whilst bringing in a sense of foreboding. The motifs is felt in the Tallis household through Jack's war work and Paul Marshall's hopes to cash in on any conflict by selling a camouflage version of Ammo bars. Likewise, the Great War is mention

Third Grade Classroom Observation

My first observation was done in Mrs. Kertes's 3rd grade class at Riverglades Elementary. As I entered the room and took a seat at one of the empty desks at the back, I noticed how organized her room was. Students' backpacks, books, and jackets were placed on the back wall of the classroom in their designated cubby hole. This technique allowed Mrs. Kertes easy access to walk around the classroom while teaching. I noticed an Accelerated Reading section in the back corner of the room where students could take tests without being interrupted by other students. There were several different academic posters all over the walls for students to reference to during lessons. I noticed a small group section in the front of the classroom where two students were sitting during my observation. The classroom rules were posted on the side wall where students were easily able to see them. The organization of the room allowed for successful learning and definitely attributed to successful classroom mana

The African Ankara as a Cultural Artifact

Artifacts are an important representation of culture and show the dynamics and growth in it. The popularity of an artifact is subject to different criteria. First, the artifact has to represent a culture that can be identified by a number of people. For the popularity of an artifact, everybody must be appreciative of the fact that it represents a part of their culture. In another context, the artifact could represent a culture that is widely accepted or recognized through a vast population. Many people have to recognize the culture for it to be popular, not only in one place or in a group it represents, but through a multinational sphere. The artifact has to be something that is interesting and can capture the attention of many people. It has to be bold in its representation of the culture that it portrays. Also, a piece of artifact has to have a history in it. It has to remind people of the cultural journey that they have been through from the time the culture was formed into the con

The Racial Justice Act of North Carolina "

The Racial Justice Act of North Carolina was a piece of legislation that was introduced to the General Assembly of North Carolina to prohibit the seeking or imposing of the death penalty on the basis of race ( GANC, 2009 ). The Racial Justice Act of North Carolina was enacted on August 11, 2009. It was signed into law by then Governor, Beverly E. Perdue. This law was put in to place to seemingly help to right some wrongs that were very apparent in the criminal justice system. This act would give a death row inmate an opportunity to get their sentence reduced to a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. The Racial Justice Act was a piece of legislation that set a precedent not only in North Carolina but all over the United States of America. The passing of this legislation into law made North Carolina the first state in the county to provide death row inmates an opportunity to have their death sentence changed if they could prove that they were significantl

The Positive Effects of Failure

"It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all, in which case you have failed by default." (J.K Rowling). How many people run from failure throughout their lives, always sticking to the easy way out to avoid the subsequent failure of attempting something difficult? Who can be bothered working hard only to fail one might ask? Or who would want to feel the negative effects that are associated with failure like sadness and the feeling of incompetence? That's a failure in itself not taking the time to realize how close from success ones failures are. Taking the time to learn from failure, to rebound off a backboard is the only way to success. What I know to be true are the positive effects of failure. Coming up short in a soccer tournament, feeling the pain of losing a goal and moving forward from it taught me the positive effects of failure. Our soccer coach finished off every speech with the s
