Ancient Egyptian Mummies

History is an extremely important subject because it teaches us about the civilizations before us. These civilizations were very different mostly because of the time they existed but there are so similarities throughout history. One of these similarities is death. People will and always die. Different civilizations reacted differently to death. The civilization that interests me the most in ancient Egypt and to be more specific the way they reacted to death. They had a very unique perspective on death. Part of this was their belief in afterlife and how you got to the afterlife. They did things such as bury people with their wealth because they believed people needed their belongings even in the afterlife. On October 9th 2014 I ventured to DC with my friends to find an artifact for my History 101 project. We went to Museums all over DC to not only look for an artifact but also learn more about the history of the world. I knew I wanted to do my project on Ancient Egypt already

Multidimensional Risk Perspective - Eating Disorders

When explaining eating disorders researchers use a multidimensional risk perspective to explain eating disorders. They identify several key factors that place individuals at risk for these disorders. There is a greater likelihood that a person will develop an eating disorder when these factors are present like psychological problems, biological factors, and sociocultural conditions. Effective parents accurately attend to their children's biological and emotional needs, giving them food when they are crying from hunger and comfort when they are crying out of fear. Ineffective parents fail to attend to their children needs deciding that their children are hungry, cold, or tired without correctly interpreting the children's actual condition. Children who receive such parenting may grow up confused and unaware of their own internal needs, not knowing for themselves when they are hungry or full and unable to identify their own emotions. Many people with eating disorders experience sympto

For The Love of Winning

1. I am an avid contest enterer. From childhood I could never resist entering in contests on cereal boxes, in bubble gum packages, in newspapers magazines or on television. I have tried to win everything from a pet turtle, to a yacht, to a home in the mountains, to large sums of money. Well, imagine my surprise after years of entering and losing, at being notified last year that I was a winner. The special delivery letter informed me that I had been awarded the grand prize of $500,000 for the four-line song that I had sent in to a cigarette company. After my immediate excitement, I made great plans to spend the money, and indeed, I have spent a great deal of it. However, perhaps more interesting than my purchases of things I always wanted to buy, now six months after that memorable day, are the effects on my life of winning a great sum of money. Through this experience, I have come to know other people and myself better. 2. I made a list of things I had always dreamed of having

Winston Churchill's Government

Following the radical and reformative years of labor's leadership, which forever changed the face of the British society, the Conservative party could be seen to have achieved little in comparison. However, the legacy left by Attlee's government was considered, by Churchill, to be a "crown of thorns " as, although the post war consensus eradicated political tradition, for example with the welfare state, economic growth was essential for its success. The conservative party achieved much concerning the economy. Their political dominance in 1951 stemmed from a reputation of sound financial management and, despite not making considerable political adjustments " as Labour did " Churchill's time as PM saw Britain grow into one of the greatest economic powers of the 20th century. One view that would support the statement concerning Churchill's government would be that of the historian Bogdan who stated Attlee was 'a secular saint' in light of how much was achieved by the Labour government in a time of dire financial circumstance. Attlee's government passed legislations that were extremely popular in post-war socialist Britain, providing security with the welfare state: t

How To Prevent a Housing Bubble

Several years ago the United States had a major housing bubble. It was not the first, and it may definitely not be the last. A housing bubble is a temporary condition caused by excessive speculation in the housing market that leads to a rapid increase in the price of housing. Currently Canada is going through a housing bubble. This hurts the economy and makes it really hard to find good real estate. There are different ways to help prevent the creation of another housing bubble. The first way is to make sure you have the money for a house. The banks started giving out money to everyone who wanted to buy a house. They were giving out unreasonable amounts to just about anyone. If you are struggling with money, do not by something out of your price range. Your home should not be a piggybank. Many people have lost their homes due to a big debt in their mortgage bill. When houses are being sold or put up for sale it also causes the values of other houses and properties to decline. Not only can you pay for your house, but you are also bringing other people's houses down w

Balancing College, Work and Family

Completing my college and working as a banker for 5 years, I never thought I would have to start over again. Becoming a mother brought many joys in my life but also brought many challenges and changes to my life. One of those changes is quitting my bank job to become a full time stay at home mom. After seven years taking care of kids, husband and house, it was time for me to gain my self-fulfillment. This is when I enrolled for my online degree in Early Childhood Education. Since I am unemployed currently, balancing my studies with housework and family demands is bit manageable; however still it's a biggest challenge for me to achieve a right balance between my studies and family. My husband is out of town through out the week for his job. I have to manage my studies, housework and take care of our two boys a 9 year old and 4 year old. My day starts at 6.00 am waking up the boys, packing lunch, preparing breakfast, getting the elder one ready for school and then driving him to school.

Case Study - Property Investment

This case study is based on a real life situation of Prof. John Davis who is the Dean of the MBA program here at SP Jain. Prof. Davis was managing a bunch of 4-5 star hotels with a renowned hotel group after college and decided to attend graduate school. After graduate school, he decided to join Nike for a short while. After spending a few years, he decided to experience the hotel industry and market for himself and set to invest in a new hotel property roughly 20 years ago. He found a 100 acre property just on the border of Oregon and Washington along the Columbia River which had several lodges littered on the property. Prof. Davis and his group of investors resolved to invest more in the property by renovating and giving the lodges a new look. The lodges were spread about the property in clusters with some on the top of a nearby hill and others near the reception area which was at the bottom. After a month of renovation, they decided to open up the hotel in mid-July. The reception

How the United Nations Failed Rwanda

Although many citizens around the world see the UN as a peacemaker who brings security to those in need. People started to lose faith in the UN after the tragic events that took place in Rwanda from April 7th to July 15t,h, which saw Tutsis, who were an ethnic minority in Rwanda that have been facing oppression for years and some moderate Hutus killed by the majority Hutu led Government and Hutu militia Interahamwe (Destexhe. 1995). There are a multiple of reasons why UN failed Rwanda during one of the most tragic events in recent times. The genocide could have been avoided because there were multiple warnings from high end officials (Stanton, 2009). In addition, the limited mandate given to UNAMIR despite requests to change it up from Dallaire which were rejected showed lack of analysis of the situation. And furthermore, the lack of political will from key UN member states to help the Rwandans. The conflict with the Tutsi government Rwandan Patriotic Front and the majority H

The Effects of Energy Drinks

In todays world, people are hooked on energy drinks. Energy drinks catch everyone's attention by the design on the cans and the slogans that the companies come up with. They can say that it can give you the time of your life, get a girl, gives energy, or help you with some rough times, but in reality, those meanings are not so true. Often energy drinks turn out to be a little more than sugar and caffeine; this makes energy drinks dangerous to consume and it should be taken off the stores shelves because of the dangerous ingredients inside the energy drinks and the side effects it gives to people. To start with is the dangerous ingredients inside the energy drinks. People normally do not know what they are actually drinking and they are just drinking the products because of the taste and the look of the can. Well people should know what is inside the energy drinks and should realize what it can do to their body. Quality and accurate labeling are concerns when it comes to energy drinks; their manufacture is not tightly regulated in the U.S. Most contain caffeine, often as part of an energy blend that also contains

This report is about the rise and fall of a Turkish Sultan named Selim III. Selim was born into power and was put to death by an angry revolting power within his own people. Islam and Human Rights

Islam and Human Rights Most Muslim majority countries are not ruled entirely by Sharia, it is considered a source for lawmaking and govermence. An Overview of Ancient Sumer

Many aspects of today's society had their origins long ago in a land known as Sumer. Ancient Sumer, which included the land known as Mesopotamia, is considered the first human civilization. Mesopotamia, meaning "the land between two rivers," occupied land in what is today parts of Syria and Iraq. The two rivers, the Tigris and the Euphrates, enabled the development of civilization. Humans, for most of their existence up to this point of history, were nomadic, living in small hunter-gatherer bands and moving with the seasons, animal herds and availabilty of wild plants. It is not known when exactly human beings began to make the connections between dropped or buried seeds, and higher availability of the desired foodstuffs, but it was the first step on the very long journey towards modern civilization. Mesopotamia, also known as the Fertile Crescent, was an ideal location for civilization to take root. The Tigris and Euphrates provided not only drinking water, food in the f

Writing Numbers

Do you know when to use digits and when to write out the number in words? In this passage, I will be discussing with you the purpose, appropriateness, and styles that are associated with alpha and numeric numbers. Now let us look into how it originated and how the concept came into play. There is really not one set standard in whether to write out alpha or numerically, and experts do not agree on one set rule. Some literal experts believe that any one word number should be written out and any two word numbers should be expressed in figures. According to 10 Rules for Writing Numbers and Numerals, "they say you should write out twelve and twenty but not 24."(Rule 3) According to the same source, other experts state that you should spell out the numbers if they are smaller

Appropriation of Aboriginal Culture in Klee Wyck

Canada's history in a large part is the history of the colonization of aboriginal peoples. Female artists during this time were struggling to find their own identity in a society where artistic topics and styles are mainly determined by their male counter parts. Emily Carr was an artist that was deeply influenced by aboriginal populations in the Pacific Northwest, Canada. Her transformation into accepting the aboriginal way of life is depicted in Klee Wych. Emily Carr's rebellion against the male dominated Victorian society is initiated by the unwelcoming environment of the missionaries in Ucluelet, leading to her self-identification with the aboriginals and appropriation of their culture. The uninviting missionaries and the repressing environment she encountered in Ucluelet, drives Carr's identification with the aboriginal people. When she first arrived at Ucluelet she encounters the mission house, which is named "Toxis " (31). "The house was of wood, unpainted. There were n

Attachment in Toddlers

Have you ever favored being around someone because they made you feel secure? Especially when we're infants, toddlers, and eventually grow into a young child, these are the people we feel the safest with. By the time we have reached adulthood we may decide to choose these people who make us feel this way as lifelong companions, because it's only natural for one to desire to be around people who they are more familiar and comfortable with. Regardless of whatever stage of life you're in when we're separated from the people we prefer to be around, we become distressed. In contrast one would not react the same toward someone who they are unfamiliar to. This is called attachment. I have researched numerous meanings and definitions of attachment, and they all seem to revolve around ones emotions, behaviors, and experiences with someone they're closest to. In fact many of the feelings a person might come to face in their life such as love, grief, jealously, anxiety, and even abandonment al

Instream and Extractive Water Uses

Introduction Stream discharge is a significant factor that characterizes many aspects of the stream function. For example, by measuring the stream discharge we can determine the amount of water available to meet instream and extractive water uses. Stream discharge can also be used to find out the habitat diversity and the rates of nutrient export of a stream. One of the most common approaches to measuring discharge is the velocity-area method and it involves measuring water depth and velocity at a point across a stream section with a current meter. Another method of stream discharge measurement consists of injecting a chemical tracer and determining its dilution after complete mixing into the flow. There are two variations in this dilution gauging method d

Text Telephone in a Deaf World

In a survey taken in 2008, there were more than 35 million Americans who were hearing-impairment. More than 25 million of those people who were hearing impaired did not have hearing aids. It is estimated that by 2025 there will be 40 million hearing impaired Americans. With that being said, it is obvious that there are many ways for the deaf to communicate with each other and also with hearing people. Just to list a few there is: sign language, lip reading, Braille, and, the one I will elaborate on, Text Telephone (TTY). Seeing that only about 28.5% of Americans who need hearing aids actually wear them, it is very helpful to be educated on how to help them ease their way through everyday life. What is a TTY? I have researched and found TTY to be an interesting method of communication for the deaf. It can also be referred to as a TDD (Telecommunication Device for the Deaf). However this term is not widely used because deaf people are not the only ones who use a TTY. A TTY is a superior

The Time I Defied Authority

Growing up, my parents brought me up to believe that stealing under any circumstances is not just wrong, but also it's a sin. I did not listen though, and when I had a chance to swipe a piece of candy or something I would. I never imagined how addicted to stealing I would become. If I could go back in time to tell my younger self to obey my parents, I would do so in a heartbeat. I started taking small pieces of candy and toys but graduated it lifted too more expensive shoplifted every time. Sometimes it was how expense the things I stole that inspired me rather then large amounts of quantity of items. It became one of my favorite games to play. One day my friend and I went into our local super market to steal a few things for lunch. Even though I had advised him that it was a bad idea because the person watching the cameras was on duty until three in the afternoon, he continued to

Pressured to Be Thin

Society is known to be a bit controlling when it comes to appearance. There are many examples of social control in the past. Nowadays social control is still alive, thought it is not so physically brutal, as it was in the past. A very bright example is the so called "foot binding " in Ancient China, during the Confucian period of hierarchical patriarchal authority. During this period (1,000 years) women in China were physically crippled on purpose. The purpose for crippling your daughter's foot was because the society "said " that a smaller foot is always more beautiful, than a bigger one, and this only applied to women. Women were often not so mobile and were doing only house work, like handcrafting, chores and etc. This ritual started from the court of China, where the dancers there intentionally were wrapping their feet in order to imitate pointed, sickle moons. The people of the Court and the upper class considered this a symbol of beauty and called it the "Lilly foot " or "lotus f

Working in a Group - Interpersonal Theories

Throughout my years at Ryerson, I've had several experiences thus far in working with diverse groups. Although there have been a few memorable and good experiences, there have also been a few bad ones. Nevertheless, being able to effectively work and communicate with other people is a crucial skill to develop if one wants to succeed in their professional career. This report will combine communication theory and my experience in working with my current group for our presentation. Although I had a great time working with the group, there were a few minor bumps in the road, which will be discussed in this report through the concepts of group development, member roles, and conflict management. Group Development Engleberg (2013) indicates that, "like individuals, groups move through stages as they develop and mature. " These stages, based on Tuckmans model of group development, can be used to describe how our group formed and evolved. Forming In the initial forming stage, members are ge

Methods of Managing Diabetes

As nurses you will come across many patients who have Diabetes Mellitus type 2. How will you deal with these types of patients? What are you looking out for? What are some signs and symptoms to look out for? How do we manage Diabetes Mellitus? People with diabetes can suffer a number of associated health complications, and strict management is required to reduce the risks. Diabetes type 2 is one of the most common diseases arising is the United States, according to Huether &McCance; (2012) "10.5% of those ages 45-64 years are affected by diabetes and 18.4% of those ages 65-74 years and has doubled in all adult age groups in the past two decades " (page.462). Diabetes will continue to grow if we don't understand and manage early. Hainer (2006) expands on this idea "Diabetes, especially DM2, is a growing problem in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) identifies diabetes as a chronic, progressive, and costly disease affecting nearly 17.6 million

Sex, Lies, and Advertising

Most people do not know this, but when you look at a magazine each advertisement has been strategically placed based on specific guidelines created by each company being advertised. If a magazine wants the company's money, they need to comply with their rules. For instance, Burger King would not want their ad placed next to an editorial about health, and weight control. Magazines are not permitted to badmouth a product that they advertise. For instance most magazines don't give bad movie ratings; they only talk about the good ones. Why? As stated in Gloria Steinem's article, "If you have nothing nice to say, do not say anything at all". A company will not want to advertise to a magazine in order to try to sell their product if the magazine in going to write about its product in a way that would make it less appealing to consumers. For example, in the August 2013 edition of Cosmopolitan has an editorial call
