Drama Audition Monologue

I apologize in advance, officers. I don't think I will be able to help you with this investigation. I can't remember him, or any of his friends. I can't seem to make out any image of anything from that night. It was so dark and I barely even remember anything. I can try, though. I can try to remember. Let me start from the beginning I was walking home one night, and all of a sudden I felt a kick from behind my right knee, so I fell onto the ground, obviously, just like that, on my knees, and I couldn't get up. I saw 2-3 men walk up to me, while the guy that had kicked me had my both hands in his, behind my back, like this. One of them was really tall, and another was short, and a bit fatter than the rest. That's all I can remember. I mean that's all I could see at the time, they were wearing masks, covering their faces. I remember seeing the same symbol on each of their shirts, but I can't remember what it was. I tried screaming at the top of my lungs, but so they tied this thing, a piece of cloth, I guess, around my mouth. I couldn't speak. All of sudden, there was a blindfold, too. And the guy, who had my hands, tied the

The Turning Point at Gettysburg

Nathan Bedford Forrest said at one time, "War means fighting, and fighting means killing. " Altogether nearly 45,000 men lost their lives at the Battle of Gettysburg alone. The North and the South have been fighting a bloody battle for about two years before Gettysburg. Going into this battle, the Confederates had most of the momentum. After they had a huge victory at the Battle of Chancellorsville, Lee was ready to make the bold move by moving his army up North. The Battle of Gettysburg started on July 1st, 1863. By the end of this fight, there was a new light for the Union. The Battle of Gettysburg was a major turning point in the war because of the geography, losses, and The Gettysburg Address. Geography plays a major role in why Gettysburg was a turning point in the war. Up until this battle, most of the war has been fought in the South. Robert E. Lee took his troops and marched them up North to Gettysburg. (doc A.) This was a very bold move for the Confederates. It was going to b

India Untouched - A Review

The documentary titled ˜India Untouched', according to me is an excellent piece of work by Stalin that depicts the theme of caste discrimination, untouchability and plight of the lower caste which is still massively prevalent in our country. Spanning eight states and four religions, the documentary depicts the continued oppression of Dalit, ˜the broken people' who suffer the burden of the caste system being regarded as ˜untouchables'. As far as the depiction of theme is considered I think the documentary completely justifies the theme of untouchability which is depicted in the form of very accurate examples from different parts of the country. It covers villages and towns from southern, northern and western states and even the larger metros. These examples show innumerous forms of discrimination beginning with symbolism like Dalit not being allowed to enter tea stalls and temples and having to dismount from their cycles and take their shoes off in upper caste areas

Clothing Group - Urban Outfitters

The financial crisis 2008 has had a major impact on consumption, which implies that the problem is on the demand side of the economy, in other words, the consumers' side. Therefore, starting a business, or in particular, a shopping complex will be a very challenging problem. And since the economy is still relatively weak and therefore so is the income level of people. It is argued that in order to thrive, our business needs to focus and innovate on the taste / fashion of consumers. This has therefore become one of our main reasons as to why we chose Urban Outfitters, which we believe will develop our content on the clothing / fashion line and bring about a significant boost in our popularity as a shopping complex. Urban Outfitters has made an incredible name for itself in the fashion industry Urban Outfitters sells the latest styles of clothing and accessories at fairly affordable price. Feminine Manipulation in Sense and Sensibility

Some feminist critics have argued that Jane Austen's novels portray women as subservient to men, lacking in individual authority and subject to a patriarchal power structure that marginalizes the female role in society. Although it is true that Austen's novels focus on the precarious role of women in Regency society, some of her female characters do, in fact, use their influence to obtain the ends they desire. Nowhere is this use of feminine influence more evident than in Sense and Sensibility. In this essay, I will first discuss how female characters in the novel use manipulation to gain power over male characters. I will then conclude with an examination of Austen's intentions in characterizing the power struggle between women and men in this way. Sense and Sensibility begins with an illustration of how a cunning woman can manipulate a weak man. The novel's first instance of dialogue centers on the exchange between Mr. and Mrs. John Dashwood concerning his father's deathbed wish

ADHD and Child Development

ADHD's effects in Child Development Steele 1 ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is a very common neuropsychiatric disorder that affects many children worldwide, and can continue on through adolescence and even into adulthood. Though there are many treatments for this disorder, there is no cure at this time. Some teachers and parents may view children with ADHD as problem children, but this is not always the case. With proper treatment and help, children with this disorder can be very successful in life. Some major symptoms of this disorder "include difficulty staying focused and paying attention, difficulty controlling behavior, and hyperactivity (over-activity)" (NIMH, 2012. Para 1). Symptoms of ADHD make it very difficult for children to be successful in school, as well as many other aspects of their daily lives. Some symptoms that can cause problems at home and school

Thomas Paine - Government and People

Thomas Paine's views can be described as ones of independence and freedom, when an American thinks about the transformation our country made to an independent nation they will look to thank the pamphlet, Common Sense. Society gives people a sense of reality. Kings who are born into their position are raised to fulfill their duties because there has to be a leader, but they are shut off from the rest of the society and do not know how to properly rule over the colonies. Thomas Paine believes a government should not be composed of just one person, but several. Government needs to protect the rights of independence without becoming too corrupt because of human nature.  Paine talks about his concern with human trust in Common Sense; he questions how man can't seem to trust yet there is the power of the king over all the people. These powers exist and he believes they should exist. He states in paragraph 27 that mankind were originally equal but there is now and was at the time, a distinct

Ferris Bueller - A Social-Cognitive Approach

Ferris Bueller was a high school senior, played by Matthew Broderick. He is about 18 years old in the movie and his wardrobe is very 80's. Starting with his sparkling white oxfords, his patterned pants, to his leopard vest topped with his gray and beige leather jacket. He has thick short brown hair and a devious smile that will get you every time. He is between 5'6 to 5'7, what I would like to call fun-sized. Everybody loved Ferris, he was a natural sweetheart and he got along with everyone. He lived in a family- oriented community; you know - the neighborhoods where everybody knows everybody. Since he was a master at tactical advantage, Ferris learned how to work his way into situations and smoothly get himself out. By watching his surroundings he comes up with a mischievous and sophisticated plan to get his day off from school. Ferris tended to stop to talk to the audience watching the film as he went on to provide the audience with his commentary on what he thinks of the sit

The Skinny and the Thin Ideal

As a relatively young girl, scanning through the channels on television today will likely bring upon endless feelings of dissatisfaction. A commercial for Victoria's Secret featuring Alessandra Ambrosio and Doutzen Kroes will undoubtedly make you reconsider your own perceptions of your body to really take a hard glance at what is wrong with you and what you should be working to change. The thin ideal is defined as "the concept of the idyllically slim female body," however, we are investigating this common mentality in terms of how media plays a role in affecting the mindsets of both men and women rather than just in a general sense. In a study completed by Aubrey (2006), there were findings that exposure to sexually objectifying television eventually led to increased trait sexual objectification for women and men and also an inc

Ethnic Groups and Inequality

In a cafeteria what are some of the thing you notice? This is one of the best spots to find many different groups of people; you'll notice different sports teams, friend groups or even class mates that all sit together at different tables, this a great spot to depict some of the social groups that occur at university. Whether its breakfast, lunch or dinner there is always multiple groups sitting down in the school cafeteria. A specific type of groupings that stands out to many people no matter where you are is ethnic groups, they often are the most noticeable as well. This over the last century has become a topic that many people are interested in due to the large changes that have occurred all over the globe. Equality has been improving in many different countries and has become a big step in our world today towards global peace. Overview of American Imperialism

In the nineteenth century, America sought the route of imperialism in the Philippines in order to protect them from oppression of the Spanish rule. This decision would cause a lot of chaos, this will be a revolution in American foreign policy. America has always had a strong sense of nationalism, and throughout this essay you will see that the ordinances throughout the 1700s and the philosophies of Manifest Destiny as well as the Monroe Doctrine will have a dramatic impact on this argument. Americans wanted a lot for themselves, and annexing some land would be a necessity in order to meet their needs. Throughout history america has always been expansionistic, but had limited itself to North America, Americans were hungry for empire. In documents C and D the anti-imperialist side of America is looked over. This is a political game that will prove

The Protestant Ethic and Spirit of Capitalism

Max Weber in The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, establishes a link between religion, particularly Protestantism, and the development of modern capitalism. Weber also shows how religion and capitalism represent different aspects of his theory of rationalization- the replacement of norms, traditions and values as behavioral motivators in society by rational thoughts. In his introductory chapter, Religious Affiliation and Social Stratification, Weber notes how occupational statistics indicate that, in societies with mixed religions, "people who own capital, employers, more highly educated skilled workers, and more highly trained technical or business personnel tend to be overwhelmingly Protestant." (Weber in Calhoun 2012:291) He observed that this phenomena is somewhat explainable by historical circumstances- in the 16th century, "a large number of the richest and most economically developed areas" converted to Protestantism. (Weber in Calhou

Native American Healing and Medicinal Practices

ative American Healing and Medicinal Practices Most, if not all of the physical treatments used by Native Americans came either directly from the Earth, or were crafted out of materials that came from the Earth. Herbs, poultices, salves, teas, and powders were all forms of remedies for various illnesses. Perhaps the most common of these was a concoction of the root of the perennial herb Anomone, a highly prized wound medicine of the Omaha and the Ponca tribes. A wash was prepared by pounding, and boiling the root into a poultice (Weiner 143). Many modern people of todays society have, unbeknown to them, used incredibly similar, if not the exact same treatments for lesser wounds such as bee stings, or ant/insect bites. The Navajo would chew the stems of the salt bush and apply the pulpy mash to the areas of swelling caused by ants or bees (Weiner 77). Tobacco, along with the salt bush, was widely used for treatment of bites and stings (Weiner 77). The Cheyennes would mix the stem of Gia

Sermon Concepts - Jonathan Edwards

Their foot shall slide in due time--- Deut. 32:35 Edwards starts his sermon off with this verse from the bible and then goes into detail of exactly what was meant by the verse. He states that once placed on slippery ground, it is inevitable that you will eventually fall (Edwards 278). I coincide with Edwards on this statement, where there is a bad decision there is also a consequence that follows. The fact that you are playing around on slippery ground, or in this case living as a natural man and relying on oneself to avoid going to hell, it is expected that you will fall without the hand of another. Meaning that you and only you can determine the outcome of your life. If you choose to act on your own understanding and never look to God to guide you then you are already condemned to hell. Growing up in a Christian home w

Theatrical Costume Design - As You Like It

Duke Frederick, Rosalind, Duke Senior, and Ganymede in As You Like It convey multiple themes such as: transformations (mentally & physically) and reversed gender roles. These themes are evident through their endeavors and challenges in the Court and the Forest of Arden set in the original Elizabethan era or 17th century. Transformation (emotionally and physically) dominates the overall play, for its major characters undergo disguises, "change of heart", and scenery. Then, inverse gender roles are witnessed throughout the play by Rosalind/Ganymede's interactions with Orlando, Phoebe, and Silvius; and control that she excerpts over the play, therefore, becoming the protagonist and heroine after Act I. For the Court costumes, it was decided that they would allude to constraints of the courtly life and its somber exceptions while maintaining the wealth associated with it as well. Artificial and synthetic materials were utilized as there are not natural, but rather purposed. This represe

The Fish by Elizabeth Bishop

The poem The Fish by Elizabeth Bishop, contains great imagery and symbolism. Much of her poetry celebrates working-class settings: busy factories, farms, and fishing villages (Poetry Foundation). The setting of the poem took place on the water in a little rented boat. Bishop wrote about a fishers ecological experience and its old battle-worn catch. Throughout the poem, Bishop refers to the fish as He because she wants the fish to be entitled to a personality, just like a human. The fishers ecological experience eventually lead to a sudden realization that in the end is signified as victory. At the beginning of the poem, the fisher observes the fishs external features with detachment. It was beside the boat (2) and half out of water (3). Even though the fishs is described as tremendous (1) and of a grunting weight (7), the fish seemed to allow the fisher to extract it from the water since it hadnt fought at all (5). At this point, the fish had put its life in the hands of the fisher. Lines five and six of the poem repeat that the fish did not fight. The repeating lines symbolize that the fisher did not expect the fish to give

St. Augustine - Sinner or Saint?

The Confessions of St. Augustine was not, as some scholars have claimed, the work of a weak-willed or self-indulgent man. Rather, it was the work of a very determined and self-sacrificing individual who was looking back into his sinful past. When Augustine wrote the Confessions he had already been a devout follower of the Christian faith for several years. He had a complex motive for undertaking such self-analysis. His purpose in recounting of his own struggle to accept the Christian faith was to exalt God for saving him from the sinfulness of his youth. Through the Confessions, Augustine was also able to reaffirm to himself who he was, and to encourage other believers and disbelievers to follow him in their own personal search for God's true mercy. In order to illustrate Augustine's unusual determination and strength of character, it is necessary to examine his life. St. Augustine was born in Northern Africa to Patricius, a pagan father, and Monica, a Christian mother. Both parents d

Australopithecus Afarensis: Tree Climber

According to recent reports, Australopithecus afarensis may have spent part of their time on trees. Despite having had the ability to walk upright, the relatives of humanity represented by the popular "Lucy" fossil are highly likely to have spent a good amount of their time swinging from trees (Venkataraman, Kraft, & Dominy, 2012). The species Australopithecus afarensis are among the earliest well known human relatives to walk upright, and are also the leading candidates for direct ancestors of the human lineage. Although the question about whether or not Lucy and her kin spent much of their time in trees has been hotly debated on, scientists h

Leadership - Having the "Right Stuff'

Leadership is a word that people use to describe a person that leads a group of people or and organization. What really gives people the right to lead? John C. Maxwell breaks leadership qualities down into seven different ways people can lead. Leadership is not something that comes easy or is just handed over because it is so easy to do. People in leadership positions are put there because they have earned the right to lead. The first of the seven leadership qualities that Maxwell talks about in his book is a leader willing to act. Action is a very important quality to have when you are in a role of leadership. A story that Maxwell shares in his book is one of a General in Vietnam who saved a young soldiers life because he decided to act. Even though it was more dangerous for him to help the young man, the General saved his life because he decided to act on the situation (Maxwell 14). For a less dramatic example let's take the sport of baseball. If you are going into practice to work

The Great Gatsby and A Streetcar Named Desire

It is always a difficult task to identify if someone has been lying to you, and is also very difficult to handle the truth when it is revealed. What lays beneath most lies is usually something that someone is attempting to cover up, and prevent from others knowing. In these two stories, this is a very common occurrence. The two works that were compared were, F. Scott Fitzgeralds The Great Gatsby, where the protagonist, Jay Gatsby was deeply in love with Daisy Buchanan, and tried to do everything in his power to bring them back together. The play that this novel was compared to was Tennessee Williams A Streetcar Named Desire, where the protagonist, Blanche Dubois, had to leave her home and stay with her sister Stella, and Stellas new husband Stanley. Conflict between Blanche and Stanley began as soon as she arrived. After reading both pieces of literature, it has been discovered that there are similarities present when compared to one another. Although superficially, A Streetcar Name

Hispanic Social Issue

When I was growing up, some of the Hispanic kids would call me "Chino Cochino " thinking I got a cool nickname but later I found out it meant dirty Chinese boy. There will always be discrimination in society whether you're in school or at work. Discrimination affected my way of choosing certain type of friends. As I got older, I started to learn about discrimination and didn't take it as a negative impact on my life. We can try to help our kids to learn not to discriminate, but the stereotypes and the racial slurs will always be in this society. I grew up in Santa Fe, New Mexico where the dominant race was Hispanics and Caucasians. Being the only Korean kid in the class, I didn't really come around any major racial conflicts. My best friend at the time was a Hispanic boy who always watched over. I would get into little fights since they were bullying the only Asian kid, but my best friend always helped me out. I didn't really take it in a negative way until I moved to Los Angeles, California for 4th grade. I lived in Korea town which had a pretty big Korean community. When I started elementary school, all the schools we
