How Science Can Benefit the Environment

Science and technology are the most useful things in our daily lives. But many people in the world think that it is their work to only use the technology. Most of the people in the world use electrical appliances even without knowing how they work. That is the reason why people are losing interest in the interesting subjects of science and maths. Even the children of today are losing their curiosity in these subjects as they are getting addicted to the comforts of technology. Instead of doing this we all should at least try to find out the science behind each and every thing in life. This was the inspirational message we can observe if we study the life of the great Indian scientist Chandrasekhar Venkat Raman. Due to his commitment and interest in science Sir C.V.Raman was able to discover the Raman Effect. According to Raman Effect the change in the wave length of a beam of light occurs in a dust-free, transparent sample because the beam is deflected by the molecules. It is said that

Sociology - Marriage and Family

Winston Churchill once said, There is no doubt that it is around the family and home that all the greatest virtues, the most dominating virtues of human society, are created, strengthened, and maintained. Marriage is a socially recognized union between two people, which may pave the way to starting ones family. Although as a society if we were asked what family means to us there would be many different definitions, usually when one thinks of the definition of family they picture a mother, father, and children. With that being said, before you can begin a family usually two people decide to be together in a committed relationship. This leads to wanting to take things to the next level or making the decision of making another person their partner for the rest of their life, normally done so by the male party by proposing to his mate indicating the longing to be with this person forever. According to dictionary.com, marriage is the social institution under which a man and woman establish

The Birth of the American Mid-Atlantic Region

English North America, during the seventeenth century was a world known for its fortunes and its vast opportunities for a better life. Promises of religious freedom, independence, and economic freedom attracted large amounts of English emigrants to make the passage to the new world. English North America, also known as the colonies, was made up of three regions: New England, Mid-Atlantic, and the Southern colonies. Although the regions varied in what they offered, they were similar in the benefits they provided to the colonists who were leaving a more authoritarian England. The Mid-Atlantic region was the most culturally and racially diverse region in colonial America. The states that made up the region are now known as New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware. The way the government system was constructed in the Mid-Atlantic colonies made living in society tolerable. Unlike the government systems in the New England and Southern colonies, the Mid-Atlantic colonies had more opportunities for its inhibiters. The colonies presented a diverse workforce of farmers, fishermen and merchants. With rich farmland and moder

Advancements in Stem Cell Research

Should Stem Cell Research Be Further Advanced? As humans, saving lives of others should be our main priority no matter what medical procedure is being done. Whatever procedure it takes to give an individual the healthiest life that they can possibly have on this earth should be put into action. Should we stop trying to find new ways to save the lives of many individuals or further advancement of the ways we already have? Im positive that most people want as many options that they can have when it comes to saving lives, but stopping or restricting the further advancement of stem cell research is closing one of those doors. As far as religion goes I would surely hope saving a persons life would not automatically deem your soul to hell. Stem cells were first discovered in the early 1900s. They are classified by their ability to differentiate. This ability is key because they can change into other cells that may help cure an individual. There are three types of stem cells: totipotent whic

Autobiographical Memory - Developmental Analysis and Theory

From the moment we take our very first breath in this world, we are exposed to a series of sensations that become perceived information. These perceived experiences such as being held in our mother's arms - up to our first kiss all have some potential to transfer into contextual knowledge that is held in our memory. Being able to acknowledge and share the association of details such as place, time, and emotions with these chronological events is known as accessing autobiographical memory (Merzenech). Sigmund Freud being the first to recognize infantile amnesia gave fuel to the conceptual trend that autobiographical memory cannot necessarily be obtained by the child's conscious mind as it may by an adult. This concept is no longer accurate as modern theories and empirical data supported in Katherine Nelson's article suggest that children do indeed possess the potential to recall not only generic memory but also episodic memory (Katherine , 1993). From early childhood and through

Methods of Parenting

Parenting is something almost every human being must go through. There is truly no right or wrong technique to parenting. However, which technique one chooses drastically alters and shapes a child's personality, views, and subconscious. There are numerous types of parenting though none of them are perfect. The most common discussed parenting styles are: Authoritative and Permissive parenting styles. Parents should raise their children in an equitable environment because it leads to the child being independent, mature, and socially responsible. Parents play an important role in developing their children mentally and physically. Different parents take different approaches to guide their children. Some of them believe in giving freedom while some don't. According to Amy Chua mentioned in one of her articles "Why Chinese Mother are Superior" that there were many things that her daughters were not allowed to do, which includes attending a sleepover, having a playdate, complain about not being in a school play, watching T.V. or playing video games etc (219). This kind of restricted atmosphere, where a child is not allowed to pursue his own choice of interest in chil

Owning Property and the Right to Vote

The Founding Fathers believed that only white males with property should have the right to vote. However, as fewer people began owning property, the voice to abolish this criteria of having the right to vote grew louder and louder. During the month of September 1821, a committee was formed to look over New York's voting requirements. At the front of the debate, two men, James Kent and David Buel, would face each other with their opposing viewpoints on who should be able to vote. James Kent was born in Fredericksburgh New York on July 3, 1763. His father was a lawyer and a farmer. In 1777, Kent began attending college at the prestigious Yale University. He graduated 4 years later with honors. He studied as an attorney and was admitted to the bar in 1785. In 1798 he became a justice on the NY Supreme Court (James Kent Facts). In 1821 he served on the committee that was examining who had the right to vote. He was part of a small group that avidly pushed against change in the state's curre

John Galt in Atlas Shrugged

In Rand's Atlas Shrugged the character of John Galt embodies the philosophy of "atheistic capitalism. " Rand's philosophy can be seen in Atlas Shrugged and is perhaps presented in the clearest way during the scene in which Galt brings Dagny to see the building that houses his newly invented motor. While entering the building Dagny reads an engraving atop the door frame that reads "I swear by my life and my love of it that I will never live for the sake of another man, nor ask another man to live for mine. This inscription stands as the oath of the valley, for no person is permitted to live in the valley until they say and truly mean those words. The inscription above the door perfectly encapsulates John Galt's view of how one should live their life, as a self-sufficient individual who doesn't act as a leech on society but instead goes out and

Cultural Industry - Adorno and Horkheimer

The ˜culture industry' was a concept developed by Adorno and Horkheimer. Outline the key aspects of their approach and evaluate its relevance to our contemporary understanding of the media in society. The term "culture industry " was coined by Max Horkheimer and Theodor Adorno in 1947, the critical term was first utilized in his book Dialectic of Enlightenment (Adorno et al., 1975). Both Adorno and Horkheimer were critical sociologists in the Frankfurt school of thought but in developing their ideas behind the "culture industry " they took a more political approach (Kellner, 1975). The theory behind the culture industry was seen as the dominant theory, their ideology was predominantly negative, and it was the way certain institutions policed society. Both of these theorists, Horkheimer and Adorno, were refugees in the second world war, which has had some implications on their writing. In this essay, I plan to focus on how the "culture industry " was developed by looking at ho

The Unsuccessful War on Drugs

Abstract This paper talks about a few of the main ideas that arise when talking about the war on drugs here in the United States. The United States government has been fighting against drug organizations to try and maintain lower crime rates and lower the amount of substance abuse. Some people may have no knowledge of what is really going on with the war on drugs and be supportive of it. This paper includes three main ideas that can make a person realize how bad the war on drugs has affected every single citizen, not just the criminals. With the war on drugs being supplied with billions of dollars each year, it has caused the United States to have the highest number of prisoners around the world, approximately seven times more than any other country. Ending the war on drugs and following steps that other countries have taken to decriminalize drugs could have more benefits than continuing this non ending battle. The U.S Governments war on drugs has been unsuccessful in trying to redu

Slavery in Africa

Africa has a very rich and interesting history that many people are not aware of. A very important part of Africa's history is slavery. Believe it or not one of the most significant aspects of Africa was slavery. When you hear slavery you instantly imagine the series of events that occurred in the early stages of New world but the concept slavery was different in in certain aspects and much less severe. After reading it will be acknowledged that slavery was already a part of Africa's society before European influence, the importance of slaves in African societies, how Europeans became a part of the slave trade and the involvement of middle men in all slave trades. It is all quite interesting. Something many people may not know about the history of Africa is that there was intra-African slavery dating back way before the Atlantic slave trade; However it is not known when exactly "slavery" began in Africa, but its past indicates it has been a cornerstone of the continents deve

Don Lemon and Russell Simmons - Ethical Analysis

A controversy erupted when CNN commentator Don Lemon stated how young African American youth need to improve themselves. He stated that the way to improvement among African American youth was to stop the sagging pants epidemic, stop promoting the use of the n-word, respect where you live, finish school and stop having babies just because you can. Many people, especially in the African American community, took offense to his criticism of the youth of the African American community. Among those who publically responded to Lemon's criticisms was Russell Simmons, who penned a letter to Lemon. Last week, both Lemon and Simmons, sat down to discuss their disagreements about this topic. Before the sit-down with Simmons, however, Lemon had a discussion with L.Z. Granderson and Wendy Walsh, two CNN commentators, and the mayors of Philadelphia and New Orleans. The topic of their discussion was the issues plaguing the youth today, especially those issues that befall the youth of the African Ameri

Adapting to Life in a Changing World

Nowadays, the world around us is constantly changing. Some people find that adapting to the new setting is problematic and helpless in defending their old way of life. Nevertheless, the optimistic trait of some people unintentionally helps them conquer their own fear and challenges that the new change might bring. In the short story Christopher the Fisherman by Hermann Schubnell and the movie Forrest Gump directed by Robert Zemeckis, two main characters from both stories face changes and challenges in lives that each approaches to the changes differently in which illustrate the dissimilarity in characters' traits. The story "Christopher, the Fisherman " tells us about the man who became the best fisherman and wanted to pass on his career to his son. However his life started to change quickly when the authorities decided to build the factory and the power station on the river. On the other hand, the movie Forrest Gump focuses on a man with an intellectual disability going through surpri

The Importance of Homework

Every student deals with the same stress but in different amounts. Homework is a big part of school and plays an important part in a student's life. Homework can be one of the most stressful things in a person's life, but the positive effects homework has on a person is greatly undervalued. Homework will help an individual improve in many essential aspects in life, such as time management, responsibility, and the improvement of a person's knowledge. In the workforce, many people have due dates that need to be met, and preparing the mind to manage time is crucial. The time everyone gets is the same--24 hours--so making the most of it is very beneficial. With assigned homework, taking control of your time makes an individual more focused in his or her

Being a 4-H Member

4-H can change your lifestyles and attitude of life. At 4-H club meetings 4-H members recite the Pledge of Allegiance and this 4-H pledge: "I pledge my Head to clearer thinking, my Heart to greater loyalty, my Hands to larger service, and my Health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world."(National 4-H Council, 2014, para. 10). This is also another motto that I have followed for the last 6 year. 4-H has taught me that not everything comes easy, that I have to earn things and not everything is going to come on a silver plate for anyone. 4-H is a nonprofit organization that helps youth becomes involved in the community, and helps them become responsible and respectful in what they are doing in 4-H and outside of the organization. Frontline Analysis - The Vaccine War

The Vaccine War explains both sides of the debate between physicians and parents regarding vaccination of children. Over the past hundred years, it has been proven that vaccines have increased life span by thirty years. Although, despite the evidence, a newer generation of parents remain fearful and skeptical of vaccines. A significant number of parents have denied their children of being vaccinated. If the trend of denying vaccines continues, then diseases such as measles and whooping cough are likely to return. The program explains the different reasons parents are rejecting certain vaccinations. The MMR Triple Shot has caused the most controversy. This shot protects against measles, mumps, and rubella and has been thought to cause autism. This is one of many cases where the adverse effects of a vaccine are so extremely rare that it is unsure if the vaccine is the cause. However, with multiple studies, it has been proven that the MMR vaccine and autism have no correlation. Doctors say that it is simply a coincidence because the first signs of autism occur at the

Public Learning Communities (PLC)

The purpose of this article was to discuss how Public Learning Communities (PLC) can help strengthen the impact of physical education classes on students and teachers, and also allow there to be a starting point in which new physical education programs can develop. Throughout the years, physical education classes have been marginalized from the core curriculum in public schools due to many reasons, such as lack of administrative support, lack of opportunities for professional development, isolation, and demotion of subject matter. There are already many PLCs that operate for the other subjects taught in school, but P.E. seems to be thought as unimportant and is usually overlooked, leaving P.E. teachers in isolation and keeping them from effectively collaborating with other P.E. teachers. The researchers expected for PLCs to improve the impact of phy

Sherlock Holmes and Jack Stapleton

Holmes vs. Stapleton The novel The Hound of the Baskervilles follows Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson as they search to find the killer of Sir Charles Baskerville. The novel is set in London around the year of 1889. The author of the novel is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The novel was converted into a movie in 2002 and was directed by David Attwood. Allan Cubbit wrote the screenplay, and the producer was Christopher Hall. Both the movie and the novel do a good job of maintaining suspense throughout the story line. The story line focuses on Sherlock and Watson when they encounter a case involving the death of Sir Charles Baskerville. Dr. Mortimer brings the case to them, and he informs the duo of a legend about a hound that supposedly haunts the Baskervilles. Dr. Mortimer also tells them that there were hound footprints found by the body of Sir Charles. Throughout the novel and the movie, Holmes and Watson search to find the killer of Sir Charles. Appreciating Nature and its Resources

Arizona is currently experiencing one of the longest droughts in the state long history. For the past twenty-five years or so, the dry heat and sunshine has limited Arizona's water supply and forced the state to put some rather strict water usage restrictions in place to help preserve as much water as possible. Many home owners are given rules about specific times when they can do certain things like water their grass or plants, and even wash their car. Ultimately, hefty fines can be dished out to Arizona home owners that surpass a certain amount of monthly water usage. Being a resident of Arizona all of my life, I have seen firsthand just how strict the water regulations are and just how serious the drought problem is in Arizona. Listening to my parents and other adults in my neighborhood helped give me a better understanding of just how difficult it is to manage water usage and how much residents of Arizona must pay attention to everything they do throughout the day. Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood

"What we are doing to the forests of the world is but a mirror reflection of what we are doing to ourselves and to one another"- Mahatma Gandi. That is a similar comparison to what Margaret Atwood has created in her novel Oryx and Crake where the people of the world are greedy enough that they will destroy the Earth to the point where it is unrecognizable. She demonstrates this through human manipulation of nature, the immense changes in climate and the plan to eradicate all humans. The human manipulation of nature really begins with animals, the pigoon project is all an elaborate plan in order to benefit society. "The goal of the pigoon project was to grow an assortment of foolproof human-tissue organs in a transgenic knock out pig host-organs that would transplant smoothly and avoid rejection" ( Atwood 27). Despite the project claiming to be foolproof many pigoons are created poorly and could not be simply turned into bacon for food. This is just a wasted animal taken away by sc

Poetry Analysis - The Tyger

The Tyger is one of the best poems from the romanticism era which was during the late 18th century and the early 19th century. The Tyger was one of William Blakes most famous poems and is still very popular today. During the romanticism era they focused their writing on emotion and imagination but William Blake was more of a gothic writer during this era which is a style of writing that was drawn out of romantic writing. In The Tyger William blake uses many different types of literary devices such as repetition, rhetorical questions and symbolism. When we look at the first stanza of the poem The Tyger you will notice that it uses repetition as one of the main literary devices with the first words saying Tyger Tyger (Blake 1). This is an example of the literary device repetition because it is using the same words in sequence. Then at the end of the poem he repeats the same stanza as the first stanza

Modernism - A Cat, a Wife and a Want

Whether an action-packed movie or a cheesy love poem, symbolism is everywhere nowadays. Ernest Hemingway, the author of Cat in the Rain, is the mastermind of symbolism. An amateur reader can glance through a short story and only see what is above the surface. But if one truly picks the story apart, a whole new meaning can be uncovered. In any source of modern literature, characteristics like symbolism can always be discovered. Hemingway begins his short story by setting the scene. Instantly the reader could assume his attention to detail is to just help the reader understand the vision in the story, but his detailed descriptions are much more. His first paragraph is the longest in the entire story and the only idea being explained is the weather and scenery. Hemingway sets the scene in a secret, gloomy way. A beautiful hotel is described with "big palms and green benches in the public garden" but a "war monument" and rain dripping "from the palm trees" can also symbolize the mi

The Sister of an Addict

The life of an addict can be a very exhilarating way to live, profitable, exciting and very dangerous. Also, at the same time it can be a very good way to spiral down and crash and burn, bringing every loved one down with you. Of course watching something like that happen takes a toll on a person. It changes them forever, stripping them of all happiness and replacing them with fear, guilt, and sadness. I grew up in a normal family household, or so I thought I did. My father owned a fairly profitable company, my mom stayed home and cooked and cleaned the house. I was the youngest of three, my sister and I were 13 years apart and my brother and I were 11 years apart. We lived in a fancy neighborhood, the kind where everyone knew each other's business; we had to attend neighborhood picnics, Halloween parties, you know, that kind of thing. I was in 7th grade when my dad decided to move the family to the country. It was probably because my father didn't want the neighbors knowing the lif

The Benefits of Electric Vehicles

If there was a car that could never harm the Earth, if there was a car where you would never have to pay for gas, would you buy it? These cars are Electric Vehicles or EVs. Electric Vehicles have many benefits. They are environmentally friendly, not costly, and have great performance abilities. The best kind of transportation is, of course, using Electric Vehicles. Good afternoon, judges, teachers, and fellow students. My name is Silvia and I'm here to talk to you about the benefits of Electric Vehicles. The most important advantage of EVs is that they are environmentally friendly. EVs, unlike cars that run on gas, don't harm any kind of life form. The pollutants that come from burning gas, contribute to air pollution. A natural layer of ozone covers the Earth. It lets gases in our atmosphere, warms the planet, and allows heat to escape out
