Concepts of Right and Wrong

The good life for Epicurus is pleasure. If you aim for that throughout your whole life, you have a good life. Happiness is simply pleasure; so, doing what pleases you and no one else will essentially bring you the true happiness that we all search for in our lives. Moreover, there are two kinds of desire: natural desire and vain desire. Natural desire is basically what needs to be satisfied and that is easy to satisfy. These necessities include eating and drinking because they are the most accessible satisfactions that will bring us ultimate happiness. There are satisfactions that are unnecessary, which include sex or any other intense emotional state that pleases us intensely. These should be avoided because they are dangerous to our well-being. Vain desires are desires that are difficult to satisfy and are not necessary to be satisfied, which include exotic foods or decorative clothing. Then, there is ataraxia, which is the desire of tranquility or the absence of bodily pain and moderate rela

Climate Change and the Earth's Cycles

Introduction Unsaturated flow is defined as the flow of water in that portion of the Earth that is between the water table and the land surface (Figure-1) (Izbicki, 2000). In the unsaturated zone, not all of the void (pore) space is filled with water. Instead some pores are filled with water, and others with air. Unsaturated flow is primarily driven by capillary and gravitational forces. The gravitational force is constant near the Earth's surface and independent of material properties. On the other hand, capillary forces are dependent on fluid properties, solid properties, and the geometry of the pore space (i.e., holes). The magnitude of capillary forces is thus variable, and can be much smaller or much larger than the gravitational force. An example of capillary forces exceeding gravity is capillary rise in a thin glass tube, where water is lifted upwards against the force of gravity. Most Earth materials are hydrophilic, which means that water adheres to them rather than being repelled. As a result, water in the un

Color - Learning and Memory

Abstract Ever wonder how we would function in a room painted all one color? In this study, we focused on the learning and memory capabilities of children in various elementary schools when placed in rooms painted in different color schemes. Our purpose was to determine whether the color on the walls in a classroom affected the learning and memory capabilities of the children. We were also interested to see if a cool color scheme had more of an effect on the child than a warm color scheme. And finally, we were interested to see if gender played a role in the different color schemes. In this study, two similar lesson plans on a single subject will be administered to the children. One lesson plan will be in a classroom with common and normal decorations. Another lesson plan will be taught in a classroom with either all cool color decorations or warm color decorations. If a correlation was found between the color scheme and learning and memory abilities, schools and other learning institut

A Study on Compliance

Abstract Compliance starts with understanding, and understanding starts with cultural competence. In this study, we focused on compliant behavior portrayed by strangers in a social environment, where consumer goods wereare available for purchase. Our purpose was to determine the level of compliance of a stranger when confronted with multiple variables and test which had the most effect if any. It was hypothesized that (a). Differences in compliance should exist due to the target's gender and whether an individual or pair made the request,. (b). Whether an individual or pair approached the target and the type of attire worn, should influence the level of compliance, and. (c). Level of compliance should be affected by type of attire and the target's gender. In this experimental design, there were 1408 participants (75 Male, 65 Female), of who were all different in ages, cultural backgrounds, gender, and race. A Data Coding sheet was used in order to record the rater's observations. The r

Sex Education in Public High Schools

Sex education, most of time, has been subject most people avoid, especially parents. However, the new generation got the parenthood worried on how and when to educate them. As this confusion goes on, some agree that their children should be educated at school, but some don't. The fact is, parents know their children more than their instructors; which means that they are very well placed to educate their children about sex. Moreover, people all have a different view of sexual education, which means they are teaching their views and beliefs to their children. Finally, parents have to decide what and how their children believe. Parents are supposed to sexually educate their children, since they know them better. As life givers of these creatures, they have all the responsibility to educate them. They are close to their children more than anyone else, and depending on when they feel their children are reasonable enough, they can decide the best way and time to teach them. Some parents have found it very effective to start educating their children as soon as they start speaking. Some parents believe, teaching their kids on how not to allow anyone, especially the oneJo of the opp

Capital Punishment - A Government Crime

Murder is wrong. Since childhood we have been taught this indisputable truth. Ask yourself, then, what is capital punishment? In its simplest form, capital punishment is defined as one person taking the life of another. Coincidentally, that is the definition of murder. There are 36 states with the death penalty, and they must change. These states need to abolish it on the grounds that it carries a dangerous risk of punishing the innocent, is unethical and barbaric, and is an ineffective deterrent of crime versus the alternative of life in prison without parole. Capital punishment is the most irreparable crime governments perpetrate without consequence, and it must be abolished. "We're only human, we all make mistakes," is a commonly used phrase, but it is tried and true. Humans, as a species, are famous for their mistakes. However, in the case of the death penalty, error becomes too dangerous a risk. The innocent lives that have been taken with the approval of our own g

Pulmonary Hypertension

What is Primary Pulmonary Hypertension? Primary Pulmonary Hypertension (PPH) is a rare and most the time fatal disease. It is caused by the Pulmonary artery having a built up pressure from the narrowing of the pulmonary arteries. This causes the blood in your arteries to not be able to circulate properly therefore not supplying oxygen where it is needed. This causes the right ventricle of your heart to become extremely enlarged and over worked (2). This also causes a patient to not be able to run, exercise, or enjoys most outside activities. Heart failure is the most common and frightening ending to this disease. The survival rate of this disease is 68% chance after the first year and 35% chance after 5 years of living with PPH (1). There are ways to slow down the process of going into heart failure by some types of medications, pi

Beginnings of the Civilized World

In ancient times there were quite a few similarities found when looking at Mesopotamia, Egypt, and China. Several societies at the time met indicators used to gage if they were a civilization or not. Be it having the administrative aspects within cities, or a political system that controlled its territory. Additional indicators could be how they engaged in long-distance trading with others, advances into services and technology, or social status based on distinctions within society (Haug, 3). With these, we can see some similarities and differences between civilizations through primary sources written during this time to see just what it meant to be civilized. In The Analects the writer Confucius, explains through a transcribed conversation had with his supporters about the teachings within Confucianism. Which was a teaching heavily followed in china at the time, we can see china civilization followed a few of these indicators based on the Analects alone. When Confucius writes "The r

Italian Neorealism and the Free Cinema Movement

The post war years rendered difficult for Italians, whose society took a big hit as Mussolini's government collapsed. After years of dominating the industry through producing "white telephone " films, film critics began to harshly criticize its attempts to imitate American film and suggested that there be more realism coming from Italians. Filmmakers took this advice and began to take necessary steps in order to create a natural and original style for Italy. This natural and realistic style became known as "Neorealism. " This movement leaned towards shooting on location rather than studio work, as well as the grainy kind of photography associated with documentary newsreels. While film studios were unavailable after the war, neorealist directors shunned them primarily because they wanted to show what was going on in the streets and piazzas of Italy immediately after the war. Such filming often cost much more than work, in the more easily controlled studios. In the streets, it was never

French New Wave Cinema

Since the 1920's, the film industry has been constantly progressing through uses of different shots, lighting, and cameras. Through America's past time, we are able to understand how certain events through decades have influenced the way film is made. From the roaring twenties, through the great depression to World Wars, film has always attempted to embody the mood and feelings that the entire country was facing at the time. After World War II however, "Hollywood between 1950 and 1969 can be understood as a response to anticommunist hysteria and the blacklist on the one hand and to the advent of economic divestiture on the other (pg. 387). " Therefore, genres such as Westerns, musical comedies, gangster films and genre-oriented films were beginning to dominate the industry. These genre films were uncontroversial in subject matter, and had already adapted the newly developed widescreen formats, in order to compete with television. Not only was the industry changing their focus on gen

Movie Review - Freedom Writers

This movie has always been one of my favorites growing up because I always wished I had a teacher like Ms. G who cared about me and my fellow students just like she cared about the students she had. I understand the context of this movie because I grew up in Southern California and it is not a safe neighborhood at some parts. You would not believe all of the people that I go to school with that are a part of gangs. There is so much gang violence and peers of mine getting killed by accident or just because they said something that wasn't part of their "culture ". I grew up in classes almost my whole high school career and even in middle and elementary school with the same group of peers and that really helped us all out a lot by having one another there to lean on. Ms. G had never taught before. She was a brand new teacher and didn't know how to handle conflict or take control of her students. She was warned that the kids all came from really difficult backgrounds and didn't really car

American Revolution and the Latin American Revolution

Before Latin America faced the injustice of colonialism, the Maya civilization including the Yucatec, Quiche, and Kakchiquels thrived in the land of their fathers. When the Spaniards invaded their land, they infiltrated these communities and brought diseases, weapons, and religion to the shores of Latin America, destroying these ancient communities, tearing down their cities, writing and calendar systems, religious and socio-political organizations and replacing it with their own (Cal 2004, 5). Colonialism leaked into this side of the world like a cancer and spread throughout lands, slowly subjecting people to a new way of life, by will or by force, until one day they would tolerate it no more. The people of Latin America united and fought against the Spanish/Portuguese colonial control imposed by multifactorial influences. The American Revolution created a domino effect on the revolutions that occurred during this time, but it was not the sole cause of the Latin American Revolutions.

LeBron James and Peyton Manning

Every generation has their set of record-breaking, title winning, superstar athletes. In the 1970s, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar dominated the NBA and Terry Bradshaw prevailed in the NFL. In the ˜80s, it was Michael Jordan and Eric Dickerson. In the ˜90s, it was still Jordan and also John Elway. Now, in the 21st century, the two greatest athletes in their respective sports are LeBron James and Peyton Manning. Although their sports are thoroughly different, there are many fundamental similarities between these two generational talents, including: their careers before they were professional players, the departures from their original teams, and the titles they won in their sports. Not all professional athletes that were the best of their generation were superstars before they went pro, but the story was different for James and Manning. LeBron James was famous for his basketball skills before his senior year of high school started. It was so apparent that he was going to be the "ne

Women in Paleolithic Times

In Paleolithic hunting and gathering societies women were integral to the success of the community. What were the various contributions women made that allowed for this success? A common thought when one thinks about prehistoric humans is "hunter/gatherers ". The men go out and hunt for food, while the women stay back and help keep up shelter or take care of kids. But due to recent study and research of these times many archaeologists are discovering women played a much bigger role in history, and were in fact a major contribution to the growth of human society. It is now known and concluded by anthropologists across the globe that during "stone-age " times women accounted for up to 80 percent of the food collection, while men only collected 20. This ma

The Question of Gender Identity

Dave Berry's essay, Guys vs. Men, and Laura Thatcher Ulrich's essay, Well-Behaved Women Seldom Make History, discuss the typical standards for how men and women are expected to act and how both genders tend to veer from them. Gender identity is the physical and behavioral traits that are designated by a culture as masculine or feminine. Berry gives prime examples of how males are expected to act and how these standards are not exactly met. On the other hand, Ulrich talks about how women's expectations on how to act and how that rarely puts them in history. Male and female genders both are expected by their culture to act a certain way but most cannot uphold these expectations. Throughout history, men have been molded to fit the macho manly man image American society thinks of when thinking of the perfect male figure. In this current time, the variety of different types of men has expanded greatly. Barry explains the stupid behavioral patterns and the masculine characteristics that are

Saving Elements of African Culture

The experience of the trans-Atlantic slave trade took the enslaved away from their roots. There was an effort by the slave owners to remove the identity of the slaves. The Africans were captured in West Africa and forced to board ships, stripped naked with no belongings from their previous life. All they had of their lives prior to slavery had become a memory. Confined in their minds were their customs, beliefs, songs, stories and language. It was from these intangible possessions that a world was recreated and transformed. The efforts of the planters in attempt to suppress the culture of the enslaved Africans because of its barbaric appearance and also in aid of controlling them to restrain rebellions were many. However, the ex-slaves counteracted these attempts simply because they possessed a vital and vibrant cultural legacy which they aspired to retain and also used to insulate themselves from the depredations of slavery. This cultural vitality also spread into and incorporated Eur

Homelessness - An American Problem

Homeless is the social problem which is easy to be seen but hard to be solved. Especially in the United States, people believe that life is a paradise. However, that is wrong. Just like other countries, some social issues exists in America. Some serious matters like same-sex marriage, gun violation, or tax avoiding. Otherwise, one matter that has been lasting for many decades is homelessness. According to the news from the internet or other social media, the homeless issue seems to be less mentioned .Consciously that matter seems to be forgotten. Despite of many aids from both government and communities, the rate of homeless people keeps increasing every year. For better and wealthier society of the United States, the government should work on forming a way for getting rid of homelessness by providing housing. There are many reasons for a person to be homeless; however, one of the main causes of the homeless is the financial problem. "[T]he House and the Senate are considering a

Leadership - Traits and Practices

It has been said that there are two types of people, those who lead and those who follow. It is true that having leaders is what makes things happen. This is especially true in the business world. The lack of leadership skills can be used to blame for the many business ventures that end upside down ("Creating"). So what characterizes a leader from a non-leader? Researchers have found that there are several traits that distinguish these special people. They are drive, the desire to lead, honesty , self-confidence, and intelligence. (Robins and Decenzo 346). This paper will examine how each of these traits apply to a leader. The first trait that can be detected in a leader is his drive. "Leaders exhibit a high effort level. They have a high desire for achievement, they're ambitious, they have a lot of energy, and they show initiative" (Robins and Decenzo 346). In order for any business to be successful there must be a leader that drives the business towards its goals. If the person who tries to assume that leaders

Akutagawa Ryunosuke - Japanese Writer

Akutagawa Ryunosuke, a modern Japanese author of the Taishō era, recounts the murder of a man through seven different peoples' accounts, one of them including the dead man himself, in his short story "In a Bamboo Grove." In Ryunosuke's story, he questions the way in which the truth can vary based on the perspectives of others. He makes the reader question absolute truth and certainty with the differing accounts from the seven witnesses. After the story is finished and the reader has read everyone's testimonies, including the dead man's spirit, the reader is still unsure as to who committed the murder. Ryunosuke committed suicide at the age of 35. Growing up, his mother suffered from a terrible mental illness and passed away when he was only ten years old. He later admitted that he was terrified that he would inherit the same mental illness. I feel as though it is safe to assume that he did concerning his untimely death brought on by his own means. When his mother passed away, he moved in with his

The Lady of Shalott

In Alfred Lord Tennyson's The Lady of Shalott, Tennyson writes about a woman bound to her room by an unspoken spell possibly cast upon her. Howard Pyle, an American illustrator and author, created a picture depicting the Lady of Shalott in her room in which she resided. In Pyle's illustration, a connection between the Lady and the outside world she cannot directly see is demonstrated through Pyle's great detail that he creates from the words of Tennyson. Pyle's great detail in his painting brings forth the Lady's longing for the outside world, the incredibly long time she had been trapped in her tower, the personal freedom she adapts to with the breaking of the mirror and the unexpected reality of the freedom the Lady will receive in the end. Tennyson describes some details of the Lady's situation and the contents in her room, such as her seemingly magical tapestry and the images woven into the tapestry that can lead to an understanding to the Lady's fascination with the outside world

Ethics and Organizational Change

Organizational change can produce many wonderful opportunities for members of an organization, however when change is not handle properly organizational change can result in job loss, increase in stress and resistance, absenteeism, and the demoralization of the employees. In order to avoid the negative aspects of change, management must be aware of dilemmas that can plague the change management process. Organizations are comprised of human beings, and their cultures are shaped by the values and ethics of those human beings. (Spann, 2012) When individuals at the management level commit unethical behaviors, the effects can have a direct and negative impact on the employees they lead. Before understanding the term ethics, first understand that the standards of the organization are defined by right and wrong of individuals within the organization. The norms of their actions should be morally right or wrong along with the values and moral standards of the organization An organization's

Terrorist Telephone

Subject: Continuous monitoring of personal communications to aid in stopping terrorists attacks. Issue: Should the National Security Agency continuously monitor all platforms of personal communications via electronic mediums to aid in stopping or avoiding terrorist attacks? My position on this subject is yes. Facts: People often wonder how personal communications can be monitored if they are 'private' such as a phone call, text message, email, and messaged exchanged on social media sites. Though the precise methodology has not been released, the knowledge of capability to monitor such communications has been disclosed. During an interview with The Guardian, Edward Snowden,

Ancient Egyptian Religion

Although there are many mysteries within the history of the ancient Egyptians, it is clear that religion was a profound part of their lives. Throughout Egypt there are religious scriptures written on the walls of temples about the Gods and their beliefs. Throughout time there was much destruction done to the sacred temples by the foreign invaders and a lot of history was lost. There are many questions about the religion the Egyptians regarding the gods and their specific importance. Some of that information has been over time discovered, however unfortunately a lot has not. The ancient Egyptians were one of the first cultures to believe in one God. To break this down, this means that the Egyptians believe in one "Supreme Being" as do Christian and Islam religions. The Supreme Being has many names, one being Nun. Nun created the world along with the Gods after it. Nun is considered to be eternal while the Gods after Nun are immortal. Nun is all knowing therefore omnipotent
