Critical Analysis of CandideChapter 15 of Voltaire's 'Candide' can be taken as a perfect example of the author's skill as an 18th Century Enlightenment writer. In this extract, there are several ways in which the structure, style, language and context reflect the novels principal motifs and themes and these features of the work combine to signify a few central ideas that Voltaire believed in. These elements include dialogue, rapid and clear sentences, unadorned but meticulously precise language, inciting incidents within the plot, irony and most importantly satire. In this essay, these elements will be explored and critically analyzed, with examples from the chosen chapter extract. The chapter deals with the death of the Jesuit baron and Candide's subsequent escape with Cacambo. Previously Candide and Cacambo fought on the side of the Paraguayan Jesuits in a battle revolting against the Spanish government. They end up saving the colonel who turns out to be Candide's love interest Cunégonde's brothe |

Modifying Cigarette Smoking LevelsAccording to B.F. Skinner, operant conditioning is a type of learning in which behavior is strengthened if followed by a reinforcer or diminished if followed by a punisher. In my case, I chose the punishment aspect of Skinner's theory, which is a consequence that decreases a certain behavior. The target behavior I chose to modify was the amount of cigarettes I smoke on a daily basis. It is an undesirable behavior I chose to decrease and hopefully eliminate in the near future. I spent five days monitoring my intake of cigarettes and four days modifying my behavior through negative punishment, which ultimately proved to be highly effective. Negative punishment is an important concept in Skinner's operant conditioning. Punishment tells one what not to do and therefore is a consequence that decreases a behavior. Aversive's, or an unpleasant stimulus, induces changes in behavior through punishment. My aversive, or negative punishment was for every cigarette I smoked, an hour w |

Altruism or ReciprocityIntroduction The concept of altruism is used in normal situations to refer to selflessness. It involves the idea or practice that is more concerned with the welfare of other people than personal welfare. Altruism, in many cultural and religious contexts, is referred to as a virtue even though the concept and practice varies from one cultural context to another. An altruistic individual is a person who sacrifices for someone other than himself without expectation of any compensation or benefit. Such a person may sacrifice his or her time, energy, and resources to others without receiving any kind of recognition for his or her act of giving. Therefore, under normal circumstances, an altruistic person is the opposite of a selfish person. On the other hand, the idea of reciprocity occurs when it can be beneficial to help other people only if there is a chance that those people will reciprocate. The idea of reciprocity uses the tit-for-tat strategy. Therefore, the issue that arises in these |

The Near-Future - Amazon DronesOne day, drones will be as common in the sky as mail trucks are on the road today. This is the goal of Amazon's CEO, Jeff Bezos. They want to be able to deliver packages, via drones, for places within a ten-mile radius of one of their many fulfillment centers. Amazon has been rapidly expanding their warehouse facilities across the country. Amazon's promise of offering drone delivery to consumers within thirty minutes of purchase demands that they build more warehouses. With all of the competition and threats within the delivery programs of various companies, Amazon has come up with a way to gain a competitive advantage. Whether or not that will actually happen, is still yet to be determined. There are many things to consider when it comes to the use of drones in delivery. It has problems that need to be resolved, but also has a lot of up side and advantages to be considered. Amazon is working on a same-day delivery drone affectionately called the "octocopter " (Rooney, [1]). They wil |

Psychology of Children with Alcoholic ParentsNormal early childhood development is a very important social determinant of health. It is, therefore; imperative that early childhood development be as healthy and normal as possible, aided by efficient parenting. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, due to problems within the family structure. One such complication is that of alcoholism among parents. As will be addressed, alcoholic parents can have a very negative effect on early childhood development. In turn, complications in early childhood development can have a lifelong effect on emotional and social health and well-being. This means that alcoholic parents can cast a long shadow over their children's entire life, which emphasizes the seriousness of the problem. As we will discuss, the evidence is crystal clear that being the offspring of an alcoholic implicates a range of associated problems, including raising the chance of physical and mental abuse. In turn, this is apt to negatively impact childhood development |

Active Learning by DoingDavid A. Kolb is an American theorist with an interest in experimental learning. He developed the Experimental Learning Model. Kolb stated, "Learning is the process by which knowledge is created through the transformation of experience " (Cress, Collier, Reitenauer 98). Kolb explains that people have their own individual learning styles. He has four categories of learning styles which include the diverger, assimilator, converger, and accommodator. A diverger is very imaginative and has awareness of the situation around them (Cress, Collier, Reitenauer 98). The assimilator uses inductive logic and observes their surrounding to make theories (Cress, Collier, Reitenauer 98). Convergers have the ability to problem-solve and searches for practical uses of ideas and theories (Cress, Collier, Reitenauer 98). Finally an accommodator is strong at flowing through with plans and new experiences (Cress, Collier, Reitenauer 98). Kolb's ideas have been incorporated in my life due to my active learni |

The IMF and the World BankAt the end of World War II, several international institutions were created to manage the world economy and prevent another Great Depression. These institutions include the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (now called the World Bank), and the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), which was later, expanded and institutionalised in the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1995. The IMF and the World Bank are the two dominant governance institutions in the world. The traditional belief in international and comparative political economy has held that international institutions, like the IMF, World Bank, and WTO, have been largely beneficial for the countries in them. It is claimed that these institutions constrain the behaviour of the most powerful countries and provide information and monitoring capacities that enable states to cooperate (Lamb 2007, p. 31). However, recent evidence has turned out that these institutions ma |

The Legend of La LloronaThe legend of La Llorona serves as an important contribution to the many Hispanic folktales we all hear about as children. It is of no surprise that we have some who believe this folktale to be true and some who believe this to be another one of the spooky folktales used to put a spark of fear in people's minds. Whether it is truly real or not, it is one of those stories you can never seem to forget. This short fiction, like any other, displays what Edgar Allan Poe calls a "single effect. " A short story having a "single effect " helps people to receive one emotion as they are being told the story. This is what makes the story so memorable, the fact that it is indeed a creepy story that doesn't leave you feeling multiple emotions except one, Fear. The story is about a young woman named Cihuacoatl who is the most beautiful girl in the city and because she is fortunate enough to bear this quality she thought she was better than the rest. As she grew up so did her her pride and beaut |

Policy Opinion - AbortionThe practice of abortion has been one of the most controversial topics today. The history of abortion dates back hundreds of years. The only difference is that over the years people have gotten better education to provide a more safe procedure. The case that made abortion legal was the Supreme Court Case Roe v. Wade.(CNN Library) This case was when the plaintiff, Norma McCorvey who was known in court as Jane Roe filed against Henry Wade, the district attorney of Dallas County. The Supreme Court decision affirmed the legal right of a woman to have an abortion which opened up doors to one of the biggest killers in the nation. This case is very important and is the base of fifty-three million murders since the 1973 decision. I believe that abortions should be illegal and people that perform them should be given legal consequences. I believe that it is immoral for many reasons. These reasons include both mental and physical problems associated with this awful procedure. Every abortion is |

My Parents - Seeking Religious AsylumNineteen years ago, a newly wedded couple fled Africa and came to the United States seeking religious asylum. However, in order to do this, they had to give up a large, pre-furnished house, a wedding gift from my grandmother, and look for a small apartment in the most inexpensive place they could find. After months of searching, they were able to afford a studio apartment. Although they had college degrees from universities, they were unable to utilize their degrees because of the language barrier. As a result, my parents pursued careers with the United States Postal Service and the Los Angeles Sheriff Department in an attempt to make ends meet. Vividly aware of my parents' situation, I wished to ease the financial burden of raising two children and supporting my grandparents. My world consists |

The Giver by Lois LowryIn Lois Lowry's The Giver, Jonas-the protagonist- is born into a community of uniformity. In this community, people don't discuss differences, talk about others or touch others. A daily pill is taken to take away pain; and at the age of twelve people are assigned a life-long role. Coastal Wetland Resortation in Southern CaliforniaAbstract The rush of urbanization throughout the world overlooked the negative aspects forced on the environment and its sensitive nature. Developed countries are making astounding efforts to restore wetlands, national parks, and the precious land left. Restoration efforts across the United States and Europe are trying to replenish the land and increase the species diversity and success which has a chain reaction of improving our environment as a whole. There are many challenges facing the restoration of salt marshes and coastal wetlands in southern California. The lack of diversity of species makes the process even slower which forces restoration workers to rely on planting and focusing on exotic species that are not native to the area to bring species richness to the water banks. Increasing wetland area will bring about the natural species it needs to allow our coastal wetlands to flourish. With creating a rich diversity of species, the restoration process would increase rapidly. No |

APA Essay - Lowering the Drinking AgeAbstract This paper will explore the pros and the cons of lowering the drinking age from 21 to 18. The benefits of allowing 18 year olds to drink include the fact that they are legal adults and can enlist to serve in armed conflicts. Both the President of Dartmouth and the article "Alcohol Problems and Solutions", agree with that point. These two sources, however, differ as to whether driving while intoxicated (DWI) will be reduced if the drinking age was lowered. The Minimum Legal Drinking Age Laws (MLDA) believes that lowering age limits would lower the amount of Drinking under the influence (DUI). This paper examines Barbour and Hanson research and opinions on drinking age and both agree on the fact that the drinking age is provoking the young adults of America to behave in irresponsible activities. On the other hand, authors such as Brandon Griggs, show facts on how alcohol damages brains that have not fully been developed, which is the case for most 18 year olds. |

A Doll's House - A Woman's Role in SocietyWomen are supposed to cater to men in marriage, be a attribute to their husband, positioned as inferior, and dependent on their significant other. In the society set upon in the play A Doll's House, women are looked upon as a low status, caregivers, and did not have any individuality. In Hendrick Ibsen's A Doll's House women like Nora, Mrs. Linde, and the Nurse were self-sacrificial, being caregivers and doing what was right for others around them not considering themselves. The role of women in society and marriage was a main concept developed in this play, it is one of the main foundations of this play in whole. The setting and time period of A Doll's House is set when men played the dominant role in society and in relationships. Jane Eyre and The TempestThroughout Charlotte Bronte's Victorian era novel, Jane Eyre, and William Shakespeare's Renaissance era play, The Tempest, society carries ideals and expectations for its citizens to abide by such as appearance, roles and behavior. If someone does not conform to these ideals they ostracized from society the way Caliban in The Tempest or Mr. Rochester's wife, Bertha, and Jane in Jane Eyre. During the time of Jane Eyre, the Victorian Era, society's ideals for appearance for a woman were quite different from the actual appearance of Bertha or even Jane for that matter. The ideal appearance for a woman is perfectly portrayed through Blanche Ingram's character in the novel. Blanche Ingram is a very high class and proper woman. She is, "straight and tall as poplarsBlanche was moulded like a Dian [like a beautiful goddess]. Intercultural CompetenceI feel as though I must admit that with the exception of Hispanic foods, mainly Mexican and Puerto Rican, I have not given too much thought to the Hispanic segment of my country. With this being the case, I will confess my ignorance, which is probably even more unforgivable because I have three wonderful sons who are half Puerto Rican. I have always enjoyed Hispanic culture, but was surprised by much of the information I read in the three articles, even though as I think through the information, it all seems very logical. I had been aware of the different Hispanic groups, but I had no idea how dominant by size, the Mexican group was. I should have known, Mexico is a heavily populated country and borders us to the south. We here all the time about border issues for example. I did not, however, realize that there were more people of Mexican heritage than from all the other Hispanic groups combined. Another issue I learned of was tha |

Renewable Energy and Fossil FuelsIs it a good idea to replace fossil fuel now or science fiction due to high cost and technological difficulties? Due to environmental problems and high cost of oil, many nations had taken actions and turned their attention to renewable energy. Some of them took a step further and set future goals on how much percentage of renewable energy they should depend in future years. Of course not all oil companies want these implementations to happened, but there are some as Siemens who has taken a revolutionary step. Inside the United States there is also controversy in whether renewable energy is good or not. This questions rise base on the economy and the government opinion. Until now, there is not a Renewable Energy Policy in the United States. However, states have the liberty to choose to implement and use renewable energy rather than the common fossil fuel. In this essay, I will explain what the future awaits on energy sources. In order to explain that, I will talk about what is renewable |
