Literacy Throuh the ChurchRony Gimenez Dr. Pruitt English 101 October 31, 2014 Learning literacy through the Church Growing up in church can have its advantages. I remember as a kid, my parents would take me to church and I helped them with the singing. This helped me use my ear for music and also, it helped me read music and words. When people grow up in church, their literacy understanding can start at an earlier age. How did the church help develop and understand literacy? By interviewing four people who I know grew up in church, this will help us understand how going to church as a child helped develop an understanding for literacy? For my interviews, I ask about a short background first. Lauren Otto grew up in Minnesota, Twin Cities. She's always been involved in church since she practically grew up in the church. Her entire life, her dad has been a pastor, first a youth pastor in Minnesota, then an Outreach and Evangelism pastor in Beloit, WI. So she's always participated in Sunday school, c |

My Mother, My Role ModelA role model is a person who you can look up to and one day want to be just like, it doesn't have to be a movie star, or the president, or even a super hero from a cartoon. It can be someone in your own home, someone who has taken care of you for your entire life. To me I personally feel like you parents or parent should be appreciated, even though none of us asked to come in this world, we still should appreciate the love that our parents have for us. They are teaching how to become who are, and how to make it in this cruel world even though they may not be the most perfect people or person in the world, they still give you there all and want you to be the best you can be. I admire my Mother so much, she is my role model, and I used to call her superwoman when I was younger. She has always been there for me making sure I get everything I want and need even when she was laid off she still made things happen for me. She is one of the main reasons that I go to school, so I can get my ed |

The Ethics of Anonymous SourcesThe ethics involving the use of anonymous sources boil down to two major values: a news medium's duty to inform the public vs. a news medium's duty to do so in a truthful yet transparent manner. It is important to note, that many times as journalists and editors, we will come across vital information that a source will only disclose if they can do so "off the record ". However, the ultimate decision as to whether such information will actually be reported should only be made after discussion with an editor. With that said, there is no "by the book " rule; there are reasons on both sides of the argument regarding when it is appropriate and when it isn't to publish anonymous sources. This memo will provide reasons from both sides, in hopes of assisting the entire team in assessing their sources. The main reason for anonymity has been that it helps reveal significant stories that otherwise certainly would not surface. If used with caution and painstaking attention to detail, anonymous s |

Dimensions of DaoismTaoism (also called Daoism) is a religion and philosophy that originated in China around 2000 years ago. It revolves around the Tao and the principle of Yin and Yang. Yin and Yang shows that the world as filled with opposing forces that live in harmony. The Tao itself is not a god and therefore is not worshiped like one; however, it does include many deities that are worshipped in Taoist temples. Since they are a part of the universe, they too follow the Tao. The experiential side of Taoism involves living the Tao and Te, the "way" and "virtue, " in the interest of becoming a sage. A Sage is one who is in complete harmony with nature, both the immediate environment and the entire universe. Through the example of the Sage, Taoism shows us the ideal way of being that follows the natural laws of life. To think and act like a Sage is to adapt to both the flow of life and the Tao by demonstrating four principles, "the interconnectedness of all life (the Tao); the underlying unity of all a |

Book Review - The Berenstain BearsChildren's Book Paper: The Berenstain Bears Go Green Children's literature is a great way to make children aware of the issues our world is facing everyday. Children book authors are using more simple words, relatable scenarios, and even pictures to make children understand these problems on there level of thinking. Social and cultural issues are become more apparent throughout children's books, but in a more simple and relatable format. I found the easiest way to make an issue aware is by the use of pictures. My favorite books growing up were "The Berenstain Bears ", they always made it seem that if there was an issue, they could try to help improve it. This allows children to think that their efforts can help improve most scenarios. "The Berenstain Bears: Go Green ", was the first book that came to mind when receiving this assignment. The status of our environment is a never ending issue, that can be improved by the help of everyone, including children. I recently read this to m |

Reasons for Legalizing Prostitution Legalizing Prostitution and the Possible Impacts For quite some time, the idea of Legalizing Prostitution has been and most likely will continue to be a hot topic to debate. The argument that prostitution is a "victimless crime " has been thrown around by people who believe it should be legalized. The definition of the word ˜Prostitution', according to Merriam Webster, is "The act of having sex in exchange for money. ". It is common for people to misunderstand the different types of prostitution. Streetwalking is a form of prostitution that is much less formal. It typically involves a client meeting a prostitute in a public place like a street corner, or an alleyway. This form of prostitution often involves drugs, assaults, and other types of exploitations and is dangerous to all parties involved (Long 1). There is another form of prostitution called Private Prostitution and it is much different from Streetwalking. In Private Prostitution, a worker and the client wil |

Women, Abandonment and PowerMario Balotelli once said "They say abandonment is a wound that never heals. I say only that an abandoned child never forgets. Though a person that had been abandoned may seem content with life, the effects of being abandoned are long lasting " (Balotelli). Nawal El Saadawi's memoir, Woman at Point Zero, illustrates her ideology in feminism, sociology, medical sciences, and writer. Her father fought in the Egyptian Rebellion in 1919 and used his progressive ideology to demonstrate self-respect, outspokenness, and education to Nawal (Ashour, 2008). Nawal and all of her siblings received an education at the will of their parents. In 1955, she received her MD from Cairo University. She continued her education through research and social outreach, focusing on common physical and psychological problems amongst women. She also narrows her focus to possible causes including cultural oppression ranging from patriarchal superiority, classism, and imperialism (Ashour 2008). She was inspired to |

Personal Story - RunawayGo to hell you idiot, you screwed up again! and that was just the beginning of it. Id barricade my door shut every night, the only times I would leave my room was to go to my friends house, school, or to get dinner. One night my dad had crossed the line, he had slapped my mum across the face with his giant hairy fist and started to choke the life out of her, her face was beginning to lose its colour. My body moved by automatically and pushed him off my mum, he then looked at me with a long gaze that could penetrate into my soul, I covered my eyes because I knew what was coming when I felt a balled fist make contact with my muscle, watching it smash my entrails together like a rogue freight train. I felt blood vessels burst and diaphragm collapse under the force the fist packed behind it. Oddly enough, the fist continued to thrust upward until my liver and stomach stopped my dads knuckles from clashing into my spine. As my crumpled body hit the ground, I grasped for air, but oxygen elud |

Belonging to the Incan CivilizationThe documentary showed that the Inca were creative, cultured and resourceful people despite of the geographical condition they were in. To their east, there laid the world's largest tropical rainforest, the Amazon. Running west to the Pacific was the driest desert on Earth, the Atacama. The Inca were also wedged in between the rocky spine of the longest mountain range, the Andes. Although they were in a rugged and inhospitable region, shaken by earthquakes and the eruption of volcanoes that kept on shattering their cities and destroying canals that were their lifeline, they still thrived. The highest peaks of their region had very thin air, which made visitors gasp for breath. They were also close to coastal deserts that were so dry that men would turn to mummies. Despite of their unforgiving environment, it was a civilization, which believed itself to be invincible. The Inca made the most and the best out of their resources whether their resources be that of the lands, waters, mountains, or the people and et cetera. What they did to the region they were in was spectacular as the size of their emp |

Autobiography of a Racialized BodyBiologically speaking there is only one kind of race in the world, the human race. All humans are different in one-way or another, whether its size, shape, or color. Many people find themselves to be unsure or unaware of what it really means to identify with their race or ethnicity. Some feel that their race is of great importance while others feel it is not. Culture is learned through our daily life experiences, complicated, conflicting and contradictory, and comparative because it is learned through interactions with other people. The interactions we have with others are performances within a public area, its something we never think about until we are put in a situation where we then realize our differences. The knowledge we have come to know about race and ethnicity we have learned through our daily constant social interactions. In school I learned that race refers to a person's physical appearance such as skin, eye, and hair color and ethnicity relates to cultural factors such as |

The Right to Keep and Bear ArmsThe United States Constitution says that U.S. Citizens have the right to bear arms. Even though this guarantee was written with no constraints, there are now laws that limit certain aspects of gun ownership. The reasons for gun control fall under the flag of public safety. Though there are many safety reasons why private ownership of firearms should be banned, these arguments are outweighed not only by the need for protection, but because the limitation of ownership rights could become dangerous to personal freedom. Currently, The United States of America is at war against 27 words that were written by James Madison in 1789. The Bill of Rights is known as the first 10 amendments to The Constitution of the United States. The Bill of Rights states the rights of its citizens. The Second Amendment states: "A well-regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed"(Madison). Defining Boundaries and Identity"Every person is born with its own individual identity "What make person to lose its personal identity in order to maintain its public identity? Globalization, Food and Healthy EatingGlobalization of the food industry allows region-specific foods and other consumables to be accessed by consumers around the world, while providing affordable and quality products. In recent years, a new trend of shopping for food and consumerism has emerged. It involves consumers purchasing all or some of their food products, most popularly produce and naturally grown foods, from local merchants and farmers. The intent was re-ensuring themselves that they are supporting the local economy, sticking it to the big corporate giants, and protecting the livelihood of the "little guy". This practice of local consuming, in very broad theory seems reasonable and well-intentioned, but in reality is not accomplishing what "locavores" (nickname dubbed for consumers who only purchase locally produced food products) set out to seemingly achieve. On the other hand, what has gotten a lot of scrutiny lately, is consuming foods produced on a global level by larger companies and corp |

Black is Beautiful - The Works of Toni MorrisonIn the novel "The Bluest Eye" by Toni Morrison, Morrison provides an interpretation of how whiteness is the standard of beauty, which warps the lives of black women and children, through messages everywhere that whiteness is superior and beautiful. In the short story "Recitatif", Morrison removes all racial codes from the narrative, for which racial identity is crucial in order, to give out a message that race is not important to become friends. In the novel and the short story, Morrison is able to relate herself to the racial indiscrimination and labels that her and her friends were exposed to as young children. "The Bluest Eye" has many elements that relate to Toni Morrison's own personal life. The story is set in Lorain, Ohio, the town where Morrison was born in and grew up in. Segregation at this time was still legal, but the community was mostly integrated. Both black and white children attended the same schools, and neighborhoods were commonly interr |

The question investigated is whether lexicalizations about environmental preservation are the first step in the educational process towards a realization of the saliency of the environment. In short, would young generations, and young minds benefit from an overt knowledge and teaching of the extent to which current linguistic vocalizations reflect our orientation either towards or away from environmental concerns? A related query is to investigate if modern lexicalizations of our environment in fact reflect generational shifts away from naturalistic pr |
