The Afterlife

Adam Ruppel Professor Stover Religion and the Modern World 4 December 2014 The After Life The afterlife and how one gets there is as diverse as the different religions explored in this research. In some form or fashion, on average, the religions explored for the purposes of this assignment, believe that something occurs after death. This is represented by the text, sacred text and word of mouth passed down from generation to generation. In Western, Eastern and Pagan religions, the concept of how to achieve a good or a bad existence after death have remained static for centuries. For example; joy and happiness, punishments, torment, cycles of improvement, oneness with God, or reincarnation until you reach a certain stage of development have been concepts that have endured. The Bible, Qur'an, Hindu and Buddhist sacred texts, as well as the Wicca and Odinist mythology and oral communications through the years have remained static throughout time with only small variations. Racial Stereotypes of the 21st Century

Even though it's the 21st century, stereotyping still exist. Many people stereotype African Americans by assuming everytime they see a successful African American they have to play a professional sport or they only can be wealthy through sports instead of an education. My parents and my family assume I only can make it through sports, and not through my intelligence. My family is corrupted by the views of the world and also has stereotyped me. They think I can only make something of myself through sports and one day playing professional basketball in the NBA. It's like they don't see me getting a degree in medicine, or getting my PHD, or becoming a doctor they only see what the world stereotype us to be, and that's sports players not geniuses. Even though in history, we have had many very intelligent African Americans that has accomplished goals as great as the Noble Piece Prize, and the President of the United states of America without playing professional sports; However, the works

The Athletic Patriarchy

Women's rights has been a hot topic of debate ever since societies and nations started forming. Even Abigail Adams, who would later be our second First Lady, spoke to her husband on the rights of women as the United States was being founded. She said to "remember the ladies, and be more generous and favorable to them than your ancestors. Do not put such unlimited power into the hands of the Husbands. Remember all Men would be tyrants if they could. If particular care and attention is not paid to the Ladies we are determined to foment a Rebellion, and will not hold ourselves bound by any Laws in which we have no voice, or Representation." The ladies have indeed sparked a rebellion, or a movement, and feminists everywhere are arguing and standing up for the equality of women. With so much of the world dominated by the patriarchy, there is an argument to be found in at least one aspect of each of our lives. Athletics are a great representation of this male-dominated society. Hom

Petra Petrophysical Characterization and Volumetrics

Bangley field produces out of the eolian Pennsylvanian-Permian Weber Sandstone and was first drilled in 1933. The Rangely Field is found in Rio Blanco County, Colorado and is a structural dome in the Permian-Pennsylvanian Weber Sandstone in which hydrocarbons were trapped by a unique combination of stratigraphic and later structural mechanisms trap. The Field was originally developed on 40 acre spacing in the late 1940's. Depletion of oil reserves since that time has caused the original water/oil contact to move upward. A 1985 geophysical log suites from well UP139Y-28 was modified using shale correction for porosity, and used in combination with a known water resistivity value and a deep resistivity value and a deep resistivity log to calculate a water saturation log. The water saturation log was created in order to fine the 1985 oil/water contact and compare it to the original oil/water contact. After 40 years of development in the field the oil/water contact had migrated upwards abo

Social Behaviors in Antigone

Creon in Antigone feels his masculinity threatened by Antigone's behavior. Why? How does the behavior of Antigone challenge the Greek stereotype of "feminine" behavior? How does Ismene's behavior illustrate "femininity"? Does Antigone accept or reject the social roles attributed to women? Why was it very fitting then that a woman act as ultimate defender of her family? Within the play Antigone, Sophocles demonstrates many views of gender expectations in Greek life. Women were at the forefront of these social norms, it was believed that they should be well mannered, respectful and obedient to males or any authority without question. When conflict arose in regards to the law of banning the burial of Polynices, his sister Antigone upsets the norm of gender roles and hierarchy. She overturned one of the fundamental rules of her culture by going against the word of Creon the king of Thebes and buries her brother. Following her act in which she viewed as a just cause, Antigone b

Themes in the Great Gatsby

Love is necessary in a relationship. However, materialism is essential in a relationships presented in the novel, "The Great Gatsby". These relationships are failures because they are built upon material things rather than built on spiritual feelings. Fitzgerald displays that relationships based on materialism will fail. The relationship between Tom and Myrtle is very similar to the relationship between Gatsby and Daisy; these similarities will help us understand the theme of adulterous love in the novel. Tom and Myrtle's relationship is based on mutual benefits. Basically, Tom uses Myrtle for sex and Myrtle receives gifts and money as a reward. Because Tom is a resident of the "East Egg" (old money), he despises anyone who is not from his class. This is why he treats Myrtle like trash. Tom doesn't even see Myrtle as a human being but as his sex toy. The lack of her husband's success during the duration of the 12 years they've been married, Myrtle has become dissatisfied. Her first meeting with Tom shows her desire for a better and more prosperous life: "I was going up to New York to see my sister and spend the night. He had on a dress suit a

Being Gay in a Changing Word

Being gay I was wondering how I ever get labeled with this word. Then I thought how the meaning of the word gay has change from the 1900's to now. In the early to mid-1900's gay use to mean someone who was happy, and cheerful. In the 1980's it started to mean someone who was attracted to the opposite sex. In the mid to late 2000 it started to mean something that is lame. Kids would use such words as "that's gay" never meaning that something is actually homosexual but something that is lame or stupid. The word gay's meaning has changed so many times from its origin to now just like any other word. The dictionaries state the word gay as following: sexually attracted to someone who is the same sex; of relating to, or used by homosexuals; happy and excited; cheerful and lively. So according to the dictionary someone who is gay can be happy, excited, and cheerful. In the 1950's Midol ran an ad campaign that used the words "Betty's Gay with Midol" meaning that Betty is

Gothic Portrayals of Helplessness and the Unknown

Gothic literature explores the natural human sensation of helplessness in the face of the unknown. By comparing Frankenstein with at least one other Gothic text, discuss this view of Gothic literature.' In the novels 'Frankenstein' and 'The Woman in Black' helplessness in the face of the unknown is displayed in multiple ways, one being the use of a naive narrator. There are also other characters who display obliviousness to certain events around them. Such as Victor believing that the monster will not strike at him and that Arthur believing Jennet Humfrye won't seek revenge. Captain Walton can be seen as a naive narrator because despite Victor Frankenstein's warnings that he is: "exposing [himself] to the same dangers which has rendered me what I am", Walton continues towards his dreams of discovering the North Pole. Even though Frankenstein is trying to dissuade him because he knows the problems caused by overreaching, he continues on anyway oblivious to w

Hinduism - Three Types of Yoga

Hinduism is the world's oldest and most dominant religion of India. Yoga is a fundamental part of the Hindu religion and is a precise and practical method of spiritual training. There are quite a few different practices of yoga within the Hindu religion; including Bhakti, Raja, and Jnana. Each practice of yoga functions differently within the religion. The first type of Hindu yoga is Bhakti. Bhakti means devotion to God and Bhakti yoga can be described as a devotional service of Bhagavan with no other muses than to just please the gods such as Vishnu, Ganesha, and Parvati. In other words, one surrenders all and express sincere love and devotion to the gods. The goal is not just to perform acts of love and worship the gods, but to actually love them, to devote oneself to them as if they were a lover, a parent or one's child (Hinduism: Forms of Yoga). On the other hand, Bhakti yoga is the easiest yoga to master because it does not involve extensive yoga practices. For example, an op

Sex Education - Proposal Paper

Introduction Across the nation, thirty percent of American teens are sexually active, thus meaning that there is a higher risk of contracting an STD and/or young adolescent pregnancy. So what is the government doing to prevent STDs and teen pregnancy? The U.S. national government made it somewhat mandatory that state public schools provide a sex education class or curriculum. The "Abstinence only," tends to be a popular point in discussion about sex safety in today's school. Seventy-five percent of middle schools and eighty-five percent of high schools are taught abstinence as the most effective way to prevent pregnancy, but they are not well informed about contraceptives and the risks of contracting STDs or getting pregnant. In order for adolescents to become more well educated about pregnancy, STDs and the other options available besides abstinence, an organization should be created to promote a healthier and safer sex life for teens through introducing sexual education cla

Early African American Life in Louisville, Kentucky

The fight for independence for African Americans in America did not end with President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. In fact it had only just started. The black community of America continued to fight racism and segregation and did not give up the fight until they earned the place that they are in now. Kentucky, and Louisville more specifically, was no different. In Louisville, blacks were indeed able to own houses and many participated in various community activities. This is shown in the pictorial history of Bruce M. Tyler's book, "African-American Life in Louisville. The first chapter, "Family Photos" depicts several female African American's outside their homes and in some cases like that of, "Elizabeth Battle Withers was a Baptist missionary for Calvary Baptist Church and the grandmother of Mrs. Ann Spann" (14), show to have been particularly active in church settings. The schools were not a good situation for African America

Reaction Paper - An Inconvenient Truth

An Inconvenient Truth Reaction Paper for "An Inconvenient Truth" The movie was composed of many documented events narrated and discussed by the former U.S Vice President Al Gore. The data gathered and the trends of different climatological graphs were well introduced to the public for better comprehension. The documentary also provided a deeper understanding regarding the most sensitive issue about the environment which is the Global Warming.             It was alarming to see the various effects of the dramatic increase in carbon emissions by the world since carbon is one of the many greenhouse gasses present in the atmosphere that actively participates to the rapid warming of Earth resulting to the global rise in temperature. Together with this, many catastrophic events were said to start intensifying resulting to many losses for instance, Hurricane Katrina, the largest and most destructible storm that occurred in the U.S in 2005,recording a huge number of victims

The Economy and the Environment

Today's economy of the world involves various sectors that are involved in the delivery of facilities that enhance the production of other sectors of society. Many nations across the world have been separated by their individual resources possessed. Some of these resources include minerals such as oil, gas and other fluids that create a basis for production in many economies. The majority of the minerals are located deep within the earth's crust. These resources are mostly natural and require man-made means to extract them for manipulation by various organizations. Natural gas plays a formidable role in the world's clean energy future (King, 2012). Nations such as the United States possess vast reserves containing natural gas. These gases are commercially viable through increased accessibility to gas via hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling technologies. Although the hydraulic fracturing industry creates more jobs in the U.S., it damages the environment by polluting underground

Essay on Black Women Workers

Women who are also mothers are considered less desirable and dependable. These women tend to lack promotional opportunities and tend to start at lower salaries. Mothers also tend to experience a wage penalty, which can be considered a function of employer discrimination. These women tend to be harassed and mistreated by supervisors and coworkers. Employers also assume most women workers are mothers even though they do not have children. Such stereotypes are made to imply that women are not devoted to their work as much as men are. Women of color, specifically black women fall victim to these stereotypes. Black women are viewed not only as mothers, but single mothers. The race of these women impact them dramatically because these black women have to deal with the negative stereotypes of being black but also have to deal with the prejudices and stereotypes that come with single motherhood. Their image as mothers and their image as blacks are what shapes employers' misconceptions. Blacks are likely to feel that their racial-ethnic identity is of importance at work and in other social settings. Black women place the most emphasis on their racial-ethnic identity than a

Religion - Purpose and Function

Religion was one of the most fundamental beliefs throughout history, and religion has served many purposes, but it is clear that the most meaningful one is the use of religion as a coping mechanism during difficult times or changes in society. Every historic society has moments in which the belief in a greater power has prevented chaos and suffering. This belief has prevented and improved many moments of virtual anarchy. Taoism had the warring states period, Islam had wars between the clans, and Christianity had many different moments in which people turned to religion to comprehend the uncontrollable events and changes going on around them. Religion could even be said to have kept many locations under control and subservient to the rules of society, which, in those times, would be considered the rules of your faith. The most important purpose of religion is to help the greater population accept and cope with societies problems or changes. The brains abilities are questioned daily, b

Haverford's Honor Code

Given the dynamic nature of the Honor Code and the opportunity you will have to shape and change the Code if you come to Haverford, what issues and ideas do you think are essential for an Honor Code to focus on, and how should an Honor Code address them? Although to an outsider, squash might appear to be governed by incomprehensible rules, the sport's guidelines form the basis for a well-founded honor code. One of squash's most notable conventions, for instance, is that the winner and loser of the previous match must ref the next one. Consequently, both participants are forced to put aside their competitive differences and work together toward a common goal-enforcing the rules. Through this regulation, I cooperate with my former opponents and build a system of trust, a principle that should form the groundwork for any well-conceived honor code. A firm belief in reliability and truth ensures that all members of the code unite around a collective cause, since the most

He Said/ She Said

It all started right here in English class. I just had come back from dance class all day with my bright blue leotard on and my classy new French manicure nail tips I got obsessed with right when I got them the night before. I sat down in my desk turning off my new music I just downloaded that I put on my IPhone to jam out to. And then I heard, "That is right, ladies and gents. Waitgents and ladies for a day. You are going to write about a day in the life of the opposite sex," Ms. J stated with utter happiness at her front desk. "Oh gosh, the amount of testosterone in that essay is going to be the death of me," I thought sitting in my desk with my dance clothes on from dancing all day. "No Rated R stories or gross to the point to where I need to but the paper in a bar of soap," she proclaimed with her humorous personality coming out. "It's due in exactly a week from now so go be opposite sexes!" she exclaimed while everyone packed up their s

Culture and the American Dream

I believe everyone has different views of what the "American Dream" actually means. All humans are born with the fact they want things that have obstacles in it. People are also naturally greedy. I agree there is an "American Dream" but human beings have high expectations on life, so they will be people wanting to have amazing, or good unexpected situations happening in their lives. According to the Constitution, being an American Citizen means you would have to be born here or have USA Citizenship. Becoming a Citizen in the United States isn't a piece of cake. It takes time. So, you're asking yourself, why is it so difficult to become an American? From the world's point of view, the United States of America is consider the best country, because we ha

Civil Rights and To Kill A Mocking Bird

Harper Lee's novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, was published in 1960 during a time of racial strife: the Civil Rights Movement was at its prime and tumultuous events evolved into violence, spread into states across the country and entered the American conscience. The novel emphasizes the virtues of courage, understanding and empathy; furthermore, these qualities are paralleled in works of other prominent voices of the 1960s. One salient voice of this time, John F. Kennedy, questions the courage of the American people in his "Report to the American People on Civil Rights " (1963). He gave this speech in response to the U.S National Guard being sent to protect two African American students enrolling at the University of Alabama. Joe South, another imperious icon of the sixties, was an American singer-songwriter who touches on the importance of understanding in his single "Walk a Mile in My Shoes ". Robert Kennedy, John F. The Female Side of Country Music

"I've always been misunderstood because of how I look. Don't judge me by the cover ˜cause I'm a real good book." These strong words were sang by a feisty female country artist by the name of Dolly Parton. Dolly Parton was one of the few early country female artist that had a strong standing in the male dominated country music industry. During the rising years of country and folk music, males were the stars of the show. Females were viewed to have no place in this specific music genre. However, throughout the growing years of country and folk music, female artists rightfully gained their place in music. The reason females did gain their place was because they put themselves out in a rough and tough industry. Their dedication is what pushed them and got them to a successful place. The realness women added to country music that men seemed to lack. Women have continually proven to have a place in the country music industry. Over the course of first thirty years, country music wa

Cannabis - The Moment Has Arrived

Julian Zelizer, a political historian at Princeton University shares his stance on marijuana in his editorial, "Why marijuana's moment has arrived ". Written for CNN, Zeilzer begins with background information on how the topic of cannabis came from being virtually never mentioned to a hot topic in the media. He refers to a few decades ago when movies such as Cheech and Chong's "Up in Smoke " as well as artists such as Peter Tosh, helped publicize the fight to legalize the famous plant. "Now marijuana has gone mainstream. Twenty three states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana. Colorado and Washington have legalized pot for recreational use " (Zeilzer 3). After informing his audience Zeilzer goes on to give eight reasons on why he believes cannabis' moment in America is here. "Why marijuana's moment has arrived " contains many facts from various reliable sources on why marijuana is on the road to being legalized nationwide. As his first reason, Zeilzer gives credit to generational change as to why cannabis is becoming more accepted in our culture. His reasoning being that the baby boomer
