America's Failing Criminal JusticeIntroduction Trayvon Martin, Michael Dunn, Oscar Grant and Marisa Alexander are all victims of a failed justice system. The verdicts in these cases have been less than acceptable, and this has caused people to ask more questions about our "justice " system. These cases and the dwindling faith in our justice system have people asking if race plays a key role in the sentencing of defendants. The role of judges also has people asking if they are making the right decision when they hand out verdicts. My research questions are if the justice system is supposed to be equal for everybody who does it really protect and is the US criminal justice system operated to abuse and control African- Americans? With the research questions I stated before, I want to get different aspect about the criminal justice system. In this paper, I am aiming to get a better understanding of how the criminal justice system is operated. History Court Cases On January 1, 2009, Oscar Grant was shot and killed |

Film Assignment - Into the WildImagine a world without technology; a world that is "inside " the wild. The open fields of beautiful freshly spilt cover of white fluff. The enormous mountains laying about with white sharp tips. The rushing icy cold water running down the small stream only about knee deep. One man traveling all alone to Alaska. In the movie, "Into The Wild " directed by Sean Penn, shows excellent ideas of scenery, presentation, and explanation. The scenery was presented magnificently. Some techniques they used to show time passing are fading of the screen, the light changing, for example, when it was night time it was dark outside and when it was sunny outside the light was very bright. There were also reference when the film went "back in time " and back to the "present time. " The setting was also very important in this film because it shows when and how every detail leads to Chris McCandles |

Film Analysis - Contact11/11/2014 Contact Humans have always searched for the answer to life's biggest questions, yet often fear the repercussion of discovery. These questions may never have universally accepted answers, leaving each individual to find his or her own meaning in life. The film Contact aims to highlight this idea by sending a human to another planet only to have her find her own meaning to life. The problem with any discovery comes with proving the validity of the findings. If an answer to life's biggest questions could be found, who would ever believe it? Science and religion constantly battle over the truth of where humans came from and where they are heading. Both have the same goal in mind; find the answer to life's biggest questions. Many discoveries contradict religious beliefs, often causing tension between the two parties. A protestor in the film chants in dismay at the idea of scientists becoming the face of humanity. Religion, to believers, serves as an answer to the unknown, leaving many to hesitate at the idea of discovery. Religious leaders fear losing their values and take extraordinary measures to |

Leaving Your Comfort ZoneLeaving your comfort zone can be an awkward feeling, it's almost like a feeling of being distraught. The few times I left my comfort zone it nearly ended badly, but in the end it was one of the best decision I've made. I have left my comfort zone hundreds of times. The few times it went wrong, but the times it did go wrong the only thing you can do is get back up, and try again. The most I remember about leaving my comfort zone is when I first rode a bike by myself, or when my parents gave me keys to the car and I had to drive on the highway, and the one I remember the most is when I ate squid that one time That is one of the weirdest foods I've ever eaten. The first time I rode a bike it was special for me. I was always scared of falling and getting hurt because I knew the floor hurt. Training wh |

Quicksand and The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored ManQuicksand by Nella Larsen and The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man by James Johnson have dark background information, but they both end on a positive note. Nella Larsen in her novel used details about her main character's personal feelings about being alone to create a dark aura of sorts around her. James Johnson implemented the narrator in a crime to create that dark mood. Also, both characters use the setting of each novel as an escape from their troubles. Both Quicksand and The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man share the theme of a homecoming to rid them of the evils they have eating at them. In Nella Larsen's Quicksand, the main character Helga Crane, was given a background that was full of loneliness and pain. In the novel, the narrator says said, "Leaning against the railing, Helga stares into the approaching night, glad to be at last alone, free of that great superfluity of human beings ". That line describes how Helga w |

Manifest Destiny - American Territorial ExpansionManifest Destiny: American Territorial Expansion - Houston Holdren Manifest Destiny was an ideology that United States expansion into new territories was inevitable and predestined. Some even described it as being God's will. However, starting in the 1800s, there were several issues concerning United States territorial expansion and the inequality of minority groups. These complications dealt with race, religion, and gender. Racial disputes largely involved Native Americans, African Americans, and Mexicans, while religious disagreements involved mostly Catholic discrimination and the ideas of strict Protestantism. Gender controversy was another issue, in that women started promoting domesticity and began believing in their vital role of contributing to Manifest Destiny. By examining the issues such as race, religion, and gender between minority groups, one can better understand the history of United States territorial expansion. A key aspect contributing to the concept of Manifest De |

Gorbachev's Half-MeasuresRussia is a nation that has gone through many hardships and reformations to get where it is today. After the Tsarist regime over the country disintegrated, many leaders arose with plans that included radical reforms to change Russia from where it stands, as well as one that attempted to stabilize the current institutions in place and follow the path of Russian tradition. Mikhail Gorbachev was one of Russia's leaders that is very complex and challenging to understand. Gorbachev, having lived through part of the terror-consumed times of the 1930s, was very opposed to the types of reforms put in place by Stalin, such as collectivization--giving him natural sympathy to others in his place. Gorbachev grew up and studied in the time of Khrushchev's de-Stalinization era as well: a time of spirit and possibilities, one that leaders before him, such as Brezhnev, did not get to experience. Once Gorbachev came to be elected as General Secretary in 1985, he had already began his own vision of putt |

The National Security Agency - A Dangerous DetrimentEspionage, according to the Merriman-Webster Dictionary, is defined as the " act of spying or using spies, to obtain political and military information " (Merriman, Webster, 2013). Acts of espionage have been utilized for hundreds of years, much to the surprise of the general public. Indeed, as inquisitive creature, it is in our nature to want to know what other people do or say, especially if it can potentially cease or cause harm to a large portion of the population. The National Security Agency, (often shortened or stylized as NSA) is responsible for collecting such information: global monitoring, and analyzing data for counterintelligence purposes. The general populous has always questioned the validity of NSA, as well as the ethical wherewithal of spying on other countries, but more so now, in American society, due to the compromise of millions of pieces of personal data.. While it is a violation of our fourth amendment right to privacy, NSA spying does not hurt us, because it i |

Pompeii - City Frozen in TimePompeii was the sight of human tragedy and probably the most important documented tragedy of destruction in ancient history. On 24, August AD 79, Mt. Vesuvius erupted and burned Pompeii under a blanket of ash and lava flow. As the day ended, the eruption had stopped. Pompeii buried in ash became a time capsule for later discovery. The life of the Pompeian's and their city were frozen in time. The volcanic eruption destroyed Pompeii, burying and fossilizing thousands of their citizens in less than twenty-four hours. Fifteen hundred years later, Pompeii was accidently discovered, opening up its secrets and giving us a look at its history, the ancient city, its location and its destruction; furthermore a chance to explore and discover a once flourishing town of Roman inhabitants who were all but forgotten and buried. The history of Pompeii is learned through strong archaeological evidence that has been dug up in excavations in and around Pompeii. The archaeological items that have been |

The Difference Between a Father and a DadI know this may be something many people have been through but that doesn't mean my story isn't unique in its own. The man I call dad isn't the man who made me, he isn't the name on my birth certificate although I wish he was. The man on my birth certificate is my father but he does not deserve the title of dad. I believe the person we call dad is the person who is there for us when we need them the one is holds us when we are scared and tells us to quit being crybabies and get back on that bike and ride the one who stays up half the night helping you build a wood house that you had to incorporate electricity into. The one who you wake up at six in the morning on Christmas so you can open those presents you have been staring at the last few hours. The one who punishes you when you do something stupid, like sneaking out at night to go see your idiot boyfriend or coming home two hours late from your date. Religion and World Views1. WORLDVIEW/RELIGION The worldview of people is the way they interpret reality and events, including images of themselves and how they relate to the world around them (pg 120). My worldview is shaped by my religion (pg 126) which is Christianity (pg 134). Everything I do is based on my religion and knowing that I am being watched over by God and that he sees everything I choose to do. I believe I am on this earth because God died for my sins and created me putting me on this earth. In the Christian faith we believe that the gravest problem in human life is sin which is the failure to live in harmony with the will of God. As Christians we also believe that when we die we either go to heaven or hell depending on how loyal you have been to what the bible says to do and what God wants us to do. I believe I am on this earth to spread Gods word and make people aware that he is not dead and will someday return. I live everyday making sure I am doing what he called to me to do and my choic |

Body Image Among College MenSuperheroes in the 90's were not large, bulky or muscular. They were just like every other character that plays the role of a hero that fights evil and rescue people in times of danger. However, things have changed since then and new changes have been made to the character of superheroes. Modern superheroes like Batman, Superman, and the Incredible Hulk have now become larger and muscular. Superheroes often play a significant role in the desire of obese college males to be muscular. The muscular images of superheroes motivates overweight college men to want to be like them and are willing to go on rigorous exercises or dieting pills just to attain this result. The media is also contributing in portraying muscularity as "good" and "lovely". TV shows like Baywatch, Jersey Shore, and Desperate Housewives that portray muscular men are fast rising in the entertainment world. Aluminium EssayAluminium was first discovered by Hans Christian Oersted in 1825. Oersted discovered aluminium in Denmark and it originates from the Latin word "alumen" meaning "alum". Aluminium is the IUPAC standard spelling of the word. In the U.S.A, aluminium was the accepted spelling until 1925, then the American Chemical Society decided to revert back to aluminium, at which time the American Chemical Society decided to revert back to aluminum, and to this day Americans still refer to aluminium as "aluminum". It is a soft, lightweight, silvery-white metal. It is a member of group IIIa of the periodic table. Marketing, Advertising and SalesMarketing, advertising, sales promotion and public relations hold a symbiotic relationship. This means for one subject to be successful in the marketing world, there is some effect from the other. Advertising is the dissemination of information by non-personal means through paid media where the source is the sponsoring organization. Advertising is all about the creativity one can create to attract the consumer for whatever product or service they want them to buy. According to David Ogilvy, author of Ogilvy on advertising, the best ads come from personal experiences because it easier for one to tell how successful an ad will be. On his blogging website he says "I have a theory that the best ads come from personal experience. Some of the good ones I have done have really come out of the real experience of my life, and somehow this has come over as true and valid and persuasive." 10 David Ogilvy Quotes that Could Revolutionize Your Blogging. Reasons to Avoid PornographyEarlier this summer I wrote an essay and submitted it to be graded. It was rejected because "it wasn't personal enough to my own experience." I was really upset, considering I am passionate about the subject I chose to write about, and I was not impressed that it was rejected based on that reasoning. (Quite frankly I think it was more an issue of material choice that caused a problem with my school.) Although, I have not personally experienced many things I wrote about, I live in a culture that is directly effected by them, and it is indeed personal to me in many ways. Things become personal when you start to care. I decided to share my essay here. Because I think people need to be informed. Because I think people need to care. And because I think people need to stop pretending this issue doesn't exist by hiding it under the covers and refusing to level with it. Just a slight warning: This topic is heavy and real. Depending on individual parenting choices, this post may not be suitable for kids. That's up to you. I always try to be respectful and tactful when writing graphic material, but you can't av |

Son by Andrew SolomonThroughout history, people are constantly judged by their external characteristics and symbolically placed into cultural scripts that challenge their overall control of their lives. In "Son", Andrew Solomon discusses the many hardships he encountered in life due to his homosexuality. According to Solomon, there are vertical and horizontal identities that all individuals possess. Vertical identities reflect characteristics and attributes that are generally passed down from family to family through genetics; whereas, horizontal identities reflect traits that are generally out of the control of parents and are acquired from a peer group (370). Society's negative reactions towards such these identities that people retain and the myriad of challenges that Solomon faces bring to question the potential for all individuals to be able to attain self-fulfillment in an equal manner. Of Missing Persons and Escape to VernaJack Finney wrote a very interesting short story named "Of Missing Persons" and for an assignment a college student named J.D. Marlow made a short movie based on the story that he called Escape to Verna. The principal character in both is a distraught man named Charley Ewell, who experiences very little trust in himself. We do not know in the beginning, though of how little faith he has in himself. We learn that through watching the movie and reading the story and creating the interpretation. The movie and the story are standardized in that they express that he holds little faith, but in the film, there is the dispute that shows that he is very dependent on his mother and others. In the story Charley is a human being that wants to get away from his lifetime because it appears that he is really distressed with his lack of faith. He feels that if he was to survive somewhere else and start something new he will amend his life. The very beginning of the story shows that everything had |

Grandma's KitchenGrandma's Kitchen "Look up at the stars and the biggest brightest star is me looking over you and protecting you," That quote came from a letter my Grandma wrote me before she passed away. That line keeps replaying in my head. My childhood was mostly a big blur, I seem to suffer from short term memory loss. I cannot remember all of the things that have happened throughout my childhood, except for my Grandma. Once of the biggest things I remember quite vividly is my Grandma's kitchen and memories that took place in that kitchen. My Grandma's house was the place that all of my cousins and my aunts came together. Trying to remember this great childhood room brings up both happy and sad moments in my families' history. The memories that were made in my Grandma's kitchen were made from deep sorrow and great happiness. Let's take a step back and describe my Grandma, the most caring and loving lady I have ever known. Herbert Hoover and the Great DepressionThe time of the 1920's was known as the Roaring Twenties, or the Jazz Age. It was a time of freedom, debauchery, and financial stability. All was well in the United States, and the stock market grew continuously. However, all good things must come to an end, and this care-free period ended with an enormous crash. The stock market reached its peak in August of 1929, but at this point production of products was already declining and unemployment was rising. The prices on the stock market began to decline and by the time October rolled around, the crash began. People began to panic about losing everything, so they began to trade their shares. On October 24, 1929, known as Black Thursday, almost 13 million shares were traded. Bankers and investors tried to salvage the situation by buying bulks of stock, but the panic of the people had already set in, and that following Tuesday, October 29, known as Black Tuesday, an incredible 16.4 million shares were traded, and the prices on the market f |

The Correlation of Power and ChangeAs Aristotle once said: "Learning is not child's play; we cannot learn without pain," even the most subjective exercise like learning is correlated with its required dedication. Oftentimes, power is considered one-dimensional and one-directional with an absolute superiority. However, since the nature incorporates a conjunction between fire and heat, the sun and light, and witnesses a contrast between day and night, summer and winter, it implies that a certain power is inlaid. This power, acting as an inner connection, is responsible for creating a relationship and facilitating the interaction between substances. The critical role of power relating to its dynamics has long been a puzzle that poets take time to delve into. Poets and audience seek the examination of power within a literary content to better predict its impact in real life. The transformative nature of power drives the formation of a relationship while the manipulation of power paves a path, both leading to the c |

The Italian LanguageHave you ever watched a movie in another language and tried to understand what was being said? If you have tried and your first language is English some different languages can be quite hard to pick up on. One of the languages that I find hard to pick up on is the Italian language. While the Italian language and the English Language both contain 26 alphabet letters Italian does not use every letter as often as Americans. In fact so Italians argue that there are only 21 letters in the Italian alphabet. The letters j, k, w, x and y are considered foreign and are only used in import words. Italian learners may misspell dictated words containing the English letters r and e, which sound like Italian letters a and i. Some words that are capitalized in English (days, months, languages, etc) are not capitalized in Italian. There are obviously some major differences between the two languages. Most Italian words end with a vowel. The exception to not ending with a vowel is prepositional |
