The Cadillac, CTX

In the 2013 Investment Guide special issue of Forbes, you open to the first two pages to see a car advertisement. This advertisement was by Cadillac and covered the span of two whole pages. The first page was a landscape (widescreen) shot of what appears to be a road, it is very distinct from the bottom of the image to about where the road ends implying that you are looking at this scene while moving at high speeds. On the top, left, and bottom sides of this page there is a black border, thick on the top and bottom and thin on the left. In the top left hand corner there is the Cadillac logo, and to the right of the logo in small gray font are the only words on the page; they say "The Standard of the World". The next page is a continuance of the scene with the road but on this side you see the Cadillac driving on a bridge with the supports blurred to imply that the car is going fast. The car itself is stocky looking with a sleek black paint job, the reflection is very pronounced sho

The Tremendous Sinner in The Scarlett Letter

Morales 8 Alex Morales Melinda Shingler Honor English 20 October 2014 A Tremendous Sinner "Never support two weaknesses at the same time. It's your combination sinners - your lecherous liars and your miserly drunkards - who dishonor the vices and bring them into bad repute." ― Thornton Wilder. This quote clearly reminds a reader of a main character in the novel The Scarlet Letter, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This quote talks about one sinner and it emphasis Roger Chillingworth. Even though Chillingworth is the most reasonable sinner, he has stolen Hester Prynne youth, another sin Chillingworth did was tricking the heart of a fellow mate and sacrificing a friendship to satisfy his own selfishness, and he also has lied to a society of Puritans which is a huge sin because in the Puritans' eyes committing a terrible sin is failing to admit to it. Roger Chillingworth is twisted and in the puritans society he was consider a dark soul. He did worse than Hester Prynne's sin of appalling act of adultery. Hester marries Chillingworth out of need, not love. She was poor and the future with a rich, wealthy man sounded promising than her current life. She might

Government Spending on Defense and Education

America is a nation which was built on the ideals of freedom. Freedom to choose a religion. Freedoms to hold an opinion wither it be one of the majority or the minority. Freedom to peruse the path to prosperity by many diverse means. That same freedom upon which this nation was built and sustained can only be upheld with the presence of two factors. The first factor is defense. American has always been willing to fight for its freedom, from our separation from Great Britain during the American Revolution to our current involvement in foreign affairs American has always been at the forefront of defending not only our freedoms as a nation but the ideals for freedom worldwide. The second factor in preserving freedom is education. As Americans for century's we have had the idea that the key to success is knowledge. Knowledge is power and with power comes the prosperity of control. Defense and education are both important in America, not only from an idealistic standpoint, but also from

Adrian Peterson - Child Abuse or Punishment

Adrian Peterson, age 29, 8-time running back for the National Football League (NFL) team Minnesota Vikings has been convicted with child abuse charges for an incident in which while punishing his four year old son, Adrian Peterson, JR., for fighting with is brothers over a game he initially left scratches and bruises on his son's legs, back, ankles, buttock, and scrotum. (Smith) Peterson according to National Broadcasting Company (NBC) Sports said that he did it to punish the child for pushing another one of Peterson's children while they were playing a video game. The report says Peterson grabbed a tree branch, removed the leaves and struck the 4-year-old repeatedly. In most instances like this one, I believe that this would have just been blown off of everyone's shoulder due to the fact that punishing your children is not against the law. This incident was not out in public for anyone to see, it happened on Peterson's own private property, it is his child and he does have rights to

Impacts of Climate Change in Egypt

Throughout the recent years the world has demonstrated increased concern over the climate change phenomenon. Several regional institutions and international research centers have investigated the statistics of this phenomenon with the aim of identifying how to reduce the associated risks and cope with the changing conditions. Amongst the numerous countries concerned about the significance of climate change and its potential impact, is the Arab Republic of Egypt. Egypt is located in northern Africa bordering the Mediterranean and the Red Sea. The whole country has only one main source of water supply, the River Nile, which supplies over 95% of the water needs of the country. Climate change is a threat to not just the coastal areas of the Nile delta but the whole country due to its far reaching impacts in Egypt's agriculture, economy, and populaces. Egypt is the second most populated country in Africa. Its population is over 80 million and is growing at 1.7% per year. The Nile delta and the narrow valley of the river is about 5.5% of the area of Egypt, but the area is home to most o

Victims and the Death Penalty

It is clear in our society that violent crimes, such as murder, should carry some sort of stiffer punishment than that of other, lesser crimes. What is not clear is what that punishment should be. One punishment that is a constant source of debate is the death penalty. In this paper, I will examine whether the death penalty is or is not ethical. Both sides of the issue will be explained, through examination of various aspects of it, which include religious and financial considerations, whether the death penalty is a deterrent or not, and whether or not it can be regarded as justice. I submit that the death penalty is an ethical and equitable punishment for murderers, and should be used throughout our country. The seemingly greatest amount of debate comes from a religious standpoint. Depending on whose interpretation one hears, the Bible is for or against capital punishment. Verses from The Bible are used by both sides of the argument to support their own beliefs. The United St

Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins

Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins was a well known realist painter, photographer, sculptor, and fine arts teacher. It is said that he is one of the most important artists in American art history. Many of his works were portraits of the people in his hometown of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he spent most of his career. In 1898 he painted a piece called Taking the Count which was his second largest canvas he had ever painted. This oil on canvas is on display at the Yale University Art Gallery in New Haven, Connecticut. Since Thomas Eakins spent a lot of his career in Philadelphia and had a fascination with human athleticism and endurance, this was an actual real fight that took place in Philadelphia on Friday, April 23, 1998, between Charley McKeever and Jack Daly (Refereed by H.Walter Schlichter). The painting is of a fallen fighter (Jack Daly) who is struggling to get up from the last punishing blow of McKeever. The atmosphere around them has been switched to tense anticipation. Everybody in the crowd is starring down

Class Instructor Observation

"6:00 o'clock, it's time to start class," the teacher says at the beginning of each class initiating the class to put away any electronics and devices they may have out. Tonight's class however, is the same as any other class period as you can scan across the room and see every student doing their own thing. Some are doing homework for other classes, and some are on their phones texting, the teacher is either unaware or does not care. Why is it that this teacher seems to lose the interest of his students so easily? Could it be due to it being an evening class? Or maybe is this teacher just not capable of holding the attention of a group of peers for so long? After many classes with this same instructor, it is easy to note that the teacher's voice ranges do not differ, he is very monotone and doesn't seem all to enthusiastic about what he is

The Ways of Immorality

Immortality, life after death, and infinity are people's concern and interest .Everyone one has a desire to still alive and to examine life and its secrets, Immortality expresses the existence of souls after the death of the body to confirm the fact; that death is not the end of everything .The origin of this belief, the existence of souls after death is a global abstract phenomenon that some anthropologist refers it to dreams which inspire of continuity of dead people existence. The idea of immortality is connected with time; time is abstract as a mysterious and unknown object, Douglas Adams said "Time is mysterious, tea-time doubly so ", the image of time symbolizes Immortality, and what people think about it. Time is also connected with the formula of the stages of human growth from being infant, young and old. Even though, time is infinite and every one will reach an end which is death, but the idea of immortality and love to live as long as possible let people to do what they c

Clothing Symbolksm in A Doll's House

In Genesis 3:7, after Adam and Eve eat the forbidden fruit, their eyes are opened and they begin making clothes for themselves. People then began wearing clothes as a way to express their freedoms. Some places regulate what is to be worn while other places do not. One could say that by regulating what is worn, one is restricting peoples freedom. This can be seen through the play A Doll's House by Henrik Ibsen. Ibsen's protagonist, Nora Helmer, is constantly being restricted in her freedoms by her husband, specifically in her choice of clothing. Within Henrik Ibsen's play, A Doll's House, Ibsen uses the symbolism of clothing to illustrate freedom. Nora Helmer, is treated as if she were a child or plaything by her husband, Torvald Helmer. Torvald controls what Nora does by limiting many aspects of her life. One of these aspects is how she dresses. In Act One when Nora is asking for help on a costume for the upcoming party she asks her husband: "I cant hit upon anything that will do;

Animals We Love

Factory farming has been in the American and European culture for over 200 years now, and is considered one of the foremost sources for our food supply for today's population. However, with the growing awareness to animal cruelty in this world, many people have been considering our current culture and removing many instances of these acts from it. Along with laboratory testing, poor shelter conditions, and pet abuse, the idea that factory farming can be considered animal cruelty is a current debate in today's world. As a matter of fact, that is my argument. We have relied on factory farming for so long that we overlook the experiences these animals go through in the factory process. It is no secret that animal cruelty is just wrong, and in this paper I present the many reasons in which factory farming is in fact animal cruelty, and that it should be abolished from our culture. The term abuse refers to the use or treatment of something that is harmful. Most of us are already aware of ab

Filipino Eating Habits

Kelly Pierce V. Manlangit E14 October 10, 2014 The Filipino Food Eating Habit: Revamping for the worse? In the olden days, when my grandfather would ring the bell, it was usually a signal for his sons and daughters to stop whatever they were doing and head home. It was because the bell signaled that it was already family mealtime. If they would not come home on time, the doors would be closed and they would miss out on the meal. Those were the times when there was a tight customary Filipino food eating habit that only served food during the scheduled routine mealtime. However, it is now uncommon in this contemporary generation. Living in today's mid-modernization era, this kind of culture has been gradually manipulated. The extension of service hours in restaurants, the accessibility of food delivery and emergence of numerous convenience stores have now changed the traditional Filipino eating habits in urban areas. Long befo

Natural Rights and Ideal Government Through Atlantic World Revolutions

Although the French Revolution was at the heart of the Enlightenment, similar ideas served as driving forces of the American, Haitian, and Latin American Revolutions as well. The revolutionaries agreed that life, liberty, and property should be considered natural rights, emphasizing property as a main source of inequality among man, and constructed new governments based on popularized Enlightenment ideas. French revolutionary Jean-Jacques Rousseau introduced this idea of natural rights and inspired other countries to evaluate the nature of man and origins of inequality1. American revolutionaries saw the freedom of language as a natural right, and how property can be claimed and then others can acknowledge that ownership as an aid in equality/inequality. Latin America wanted equal treatment and th

Changing the National Education Standards

I expect to prove that the National Education Standards should no longer be put in place. "Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid"- Albert Einstein. By allowing these standardized tests, we are pushing basic learning and teaching aside, and limiting our students' as well as the teachers' success. The significance of education is to better our children and to prepare them for the future. That cannot be possible if we are just rushing students through school, thinking they learned something based off a standardized test. In reality students could have just been taught what was need to pass the test and nothing else. Children should be learning how to think, not what to think. Think back to when you were a child and first started school. The basics in elementary are simple when you look back now but, were they simple when you were young? Probably not. Children start first grade betwee

Tickets to New York City

I've always wanted to go to New York. That's all I ever talked about wanting to do. I finally got to go when my Aunt and Grandma got us three tickets to New York for my birthday. They told me we were going to be staying in Time Square for a week. I couldn't believe it; I was so excited! May 28, 2013 was the day we left for New York. I remember having to stay overnight in Dayton at my aunt's house because we had to leave at 5:00am the next morning to pack and head to the airport. I remember I couldn't sleep that night because I was too excited thinking about all the fun things we were going to do. I mean I had dreamed of going to New York forever and now it was happening. Soon enough it came time to get up and I had about an hour of sleep so on the way to the airport I fell asleep in the car. We finally arrived at the airport. We found where we were boarding and then checked in our bags. We had about an hour until it was time to board the plane so we sat down at a restaurant in the airp

Daddy's Little Girl

My mom and step dad got together when I was almost eight years old. I had never seen my mom so happy before so I knew this guy was perfect. Turns out, he was. He not only was my dad, but he instantly became my best friend. We did everything together, whether it be running to the store or just simply driving around laughing at the most random things. Our bond was unbreakable, or at least I thought it was. Christmas day 2007 we all woke up early and opened gifts, but something did not seem right. My dad was not his normal happy self. He looked ill and we knew he needed to go to the hospital. After hours in the emergency room, they admitted him. His fever was extremely high and they did not know what was causing it. My mom and I were scared. We had never seen my dad this sick before and we just wanted to know what was wrong with him. His elbow was swollen to the point it looked like his skin was going to tear. They ran so many different tests and still could not figure out what was the cause of his sickness. They thought he had cancer. After days in the hospital they fi

Schadenfreude - The Misfortune of Others

I hear my son say to his brother, "Ha-ha! Stevie got in trouble." What my child is experiencing is Schadenfreude. Schadenfreude is something that everyone experiences at one time or another. I see it almost every day. It is a fairly new word, but what it means has been around since the dawn of times. It is a natural aspect of human behavior. Let's get down to the history of the word Schadenfreude. Schadenfreude is a German word that is gained from two characters. "Schaden" translates to mean damage or harm, while "Freude" translates to mean joy or delight. The Oxford English Dictionary defines Schadenfreude as Malicious enjoyment of the misfortunes of others. Schadenfreude has been about since the dawn of times. It is a natural aspect of human behavior. People do not understand why others get joy out of others failure, but it does happen and has always been so there just was not a term for it until recently. When I was younger, I experienced Schadenfreude many times. I did not have any siblings around when I was a young child, but I had my c

A World Without Sun

The old saying goes "You only miss it, when it's gone" and it couldn't be more right. There are things we see, use, and/or depend on every day that we sometimes take for granted; the sun for example. The thought of a world without the sun probably makes you think of the end of the world or mass chaos, but the truth actually may surprise you. So let's just say the sun just disappeared, not exploded, not burnt out, just vanished, what would happen. Well to start we wouldn't even know the sun was gone at first. It takes approximately 8 minutes and 20 seconds for light to travel from the sun to the Earth. () It's safe to assume that by the time we found out it was gone, confusion and panic would ensue. Not only that but at the moment in time in which we discovered the sun was gone, we would lose its gravitational influence, "and Earth would fly out in a straight line tangent to where ever it was in its orbit" () This is because gravitational force propagates in waves

Les Miserables - Movie and Novel

1. Victor Hugo's Les Misérables is a classic novel that has followed through to a cinematic spectacle on multiple occasions. Two adaptations are the 1935 film with Frederick March and the 1998 version with Liam Neeson. While both films capture Hugo's original interpretation, the two films part ways in multiple scenes. It must be taken into account that there is a large timeframe between the filming of these two. For example, the unfolding of the narrative in the 1935 film is presented by words from Victor Hugo himself, whereas the 1998 film shoots a more visual opening of the scene. The beginnings of the films themselves were much different and took interpretations of the novel in different directions. As the story in the novel begins with Monsieur Myrial, the main protagonist, Jean Valjean, in the 1935 interpretation, is revealed in the first scene. It goes more in depth about the background of Jean Valjean than the 1998 version, which begins with his first meeting

The Hershey Company - Advertising Proposal

The Hershey Chocolate Company's entrance into the confectionary world occurred at the beginning of the 20th century, following the decision of Milton Hershey, a candy manufacturer, to add a layer of milk chocolate to a line of his company's caramels. The chocolate received immediate success, with a steady demand driving the creation of various forms of the chocolate including the iconic Hershey Bar. Once the market was established for this distinctly flavored confection, a factory dedicated solely to the production of chocolate was opened in 1905, in rural Pennsylvania, becoming the first American company to produce milk chocolate. Following its debut was a string of new product lines including the classic Hershey's KISSES and the acquisitions of other companies with well-established market share divisions, including Reese's, and the manufactures of TWIZZLERS. Despite the hardships of the Great Depression it remained profitable and avoided, unlike many other corporations, worker layof

Hunger Games - Thematic Essay

Elie Wiesel once said to the abuse of power; "Ultimately, the only power to which man should aspire is that which he exercises over himself" (Elie Wiesel 1928- ). The book Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins revolves around the main protagonist, Katniss Everdeen who ends in a death killing arena put on by the Capitol. This is put on every year to show the Capitol's power and thus ceasing the rebellions of the Districts. The abuse of social power is highly demonstrated in this book since it results in killing people who are innocent. People who are bad rulers tend to stay in power because they are feared. The quote "-this is the Capitol's way of reminding us how totally we are at their mercy." (Collins, 18) shows that the people know they can't go against the Capitol because they are dependent on them. They fear their ruler, Snow, will harm them or take away their provisions. Next we look at the
