Personal Response Paper - ParentingBeing a parent comes with a lot of responsibility and difficult decision-making. You always have your child's best interest at heart, but sometimes your child may disagree with the rules you have set down. Parenting is one of the most challenging and admirable responsibilities that people can experience. In the parenting world, there is a type of parent known as authoritarian. Now these authoritarian parents are in control of every miniscule detail in their child's every day activity. Also known as "helicopter parenting", these parents hover over their children in hopes that they will become the "perfect" child. The same could be said about Amy Chua from the Article "How to raise a No. 1 child ", written by Margaret Wente. This article identifies how Chua raises her daughters through strict parenting, which leads her daughters to success. Although Wente shares her own strong beliefs about raising a number one child, I would disagree with her thoughts; her arguments throughout the artic |

Chains by Laurie Halse AndersonMany young adult books teach valuable lessons to its readers. Laurie Halse Anderson's Chains teaches what one might call the capacity of human beings to suffer. The narrative novel presents middle students an understanding of "the harsh realities of northern slavery " (Bilski). This capacity for endurance is what eventually fosters the hope for survival and triumph in the life of the book's main character, Isabel. Consider Isabel's predicament as an example of this life lesson. Isabel's enslavement is brutal. There is degradation, physical and emotional abuse, as well as her own psychological condition, in which she seeks to understand her own adolescent condition in the shackles of slavery. Her owners had no regard for their slaves' lives an |

Exploratory Essay - Overweight AmericaAmerica is one of the most overweight countries in the world. That being said, why aren't PE classes required for at least grade school students? Unhealthy and overweight kids can lead to an unhealthy adulthood. It is important to realize that a healthy lifestyle starts in adolescence and that's why kids should get started as early as possible. You might ask, why is it so important to make sure that children live healthier? Why can't they do what they want? Or why can't it be up to the parent? First, studies show that physically active children, kids, and teens have better self-esteem, tend to be in a better mood and perform better academically. Also, living a healthier and more fit lifestyle carries into adulthood. When adults are overweight and obese it can hinder daily activity and sometimes they aren't able to work. The purpose of raising awareness on this issue is so that parents, guardians, and taxpayers know how important it is for grade school kids to take gym classes for long |

Concepts Sexual Harassment in the MilitarySexual harassment is a well-known social problem that commonly happens in the workplace, school, public transportation, and military. It also happens on Internet and electronic communication. As the issue of gender equality has been taken seriously, people were concerned about the problem of sexual harassment. "The congressionally mandated report defines sexual harassment as an unwelcome sexual advance, request for sexual favors or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that can affect a career, job performance or create an abuse workplace " (Simeone). Sexual assault in the military is reaching epidemic proportions, discouraging many women from enlisting, though both men and women are victims of such crimes. What a lot of people don't understand is why is it so difficult to get this issue taking care of? "Reality upends their lives. Male colleagues subject them to humiliating initiation rituals and grope their breasts and bottoms. Three soldiers gang rape a female so |

Expectancy Violation Theory - Breaking BadBreaking Bad ran for five seasons, and during this time became an American TV favorite. One of the reasons that the show was so beloved by the viewers was because of the show's ability to violate the viewers' expectations. Viewers became so entrenched into the "lives " of the characters whether it was: Walt, Jesse, Hank, or even Saul, and Vince Gilligan's willingness to throw audiences for a loop while keeping a sound narrative was the driving force behind the love for the show. The use of the expectancy violation theory (EVT) in Breaking Bad is masterful in the sense that when viewer expectations were thrown off course the dividends rewarded to the audience were beautiful, and also didn't hurt the shows ratings. There were times that I was left saying to myself "no way that just happened ", like when Walt allows Jesse's girlfriend to overdose. Other times as a viewer you get a grasp on what is about to happen moments |

Obama and Black AmericaThe United States is the most powerful country in the world. So its leader, The President, is considered the most powerful position in the world. The people of the United Sates rely on The President to manage the government and ensure that we enjoy financial prosperity, protection from foreign threats, and continued freedom of expression and ideas. So it is no surprise that choosing a president is one of the most important decisions we must make during an election year. It is also no surprise that we subject the one chosen to scrutiny during candidacy and during his/her term. In 2008-2009 candidate and eventual president, Barack Obama underwent this scrutiny. He survived the scrutiny and made history in the process becoming the first black president of the most powerful man in the world. He has experienced the trials and tribulations that come along with having that distinction. Essayist and Journalist, Erin Aubry Kaplan, discusses both topics in her essay, Barack Obama: Miles Travel |

Voltaire and CandideThere is a continuous war; every species of the world is at war with one another. The murderous war that man partakes in are dreadful to the human species. The most determined researchers will agree that war does nothing but bring more war to a civilization or religion. Throughout the time of History there are individuals who make their time in history worth knowing more than the average person. The impact that the individual leaves on the world is a great monument for that person, advanced scholars look at inadequate research from individuals like Voltaire on their emphasis in history like his view on war, and view on France. Salem Witch TrialThere are countless numbers of interpretations being proposed on major historical events. One of the most fascinating topics is the well-known Salem Witch Trials. By studying and analyzing different explanations, this essay attempts to answer why women accused one another during the witch trials, and also why people were accused. This is crucial to know because women of the seventeenth century were under social and religious pressure that left women in a vulnerable position, which consequently led to a search for power, sense of their own potency, and social reward.1 Many people have suggested multiple explanations by taking considering external factors. One of them is the idea that afflicted women, the accusers, were victims of the Indian War experience and suffered from what is called today, post-traumatic disorder (PTSD).2 However, this fails to explain why those who were not as close as the Salem villagers were to the war zone showed the same symptoms. In addition, the afflicted w |

Updating Gun Control LawsGun control laws should have been changed after the Aurora, Colorado shooting. The article that I found that talks about this problem is titled "Views on Gun Laws Unchanged after Aurora Shooting." This article is persuading because it gives a lot of statistics on what the people and the government thought about the gun laws before and after the shooting in Colorado, and the numbers are not that much different at all. The purpose of this article is to ensure that the people know how little percentages went up after the shooting in Aurora. The gun law states that they regulate the sale, possession, and use of firearms and ammunition. And some U.S. states have created assault weapon bans that are similar to the expired federal assault weapons ban. But obviously it isn't working if James Holmes was able to carry a semiautomatic rifle, a .223-caliber assault-style rifle with a 100-round drum magazine, and a two .40-caliber glock handguns and a 12-gauge Remington Model 870 pump shotgun. Is US Still the Land of OpportunityIt is noticeable that the functions of technology and education played major roles in the US although opportunities in other fields such as job vacancies are on a steep decline. I agree with international students who think that US has a reputation for dominating the world with education and IT sectors, which I also personally agree with. When unemployment rate was nearly 8% in all fields, the Bureau of Labor Statistics made a guess that computer and information research related occupations would rise by 19% between 2010 and 2020. As expected, computer science jobs are offered with a huge diversity in cities like New York, San Francisco, Seattle and other cities where the use of technology is highly demanded. Moreover, there are not only opportunities in jobs but also the mean salary is higher than jobs in other fields. For instance, the average salary for a senior software engineer is significantly high: $98,000. That is also one of the main reasons why computer science and IT majors |

Brandon Browner SuspensionThere are many players that have done drugs while playing in the NFL. Many understand that it is bad, against the rules and have to pay the consequences but the outcome of this one went too far. A lot of other athletes were caught doing worse drugs but did not get a good suspension. Yes, athletes do have to take responsibility for their actions but the NFLPA went overboard with this one. Brandon Browner should have not been suspended and deserves a Super bowl ring. Brandon Browner is a six-foot four cornerback that plays for the super bowl winners, the Seattle Seahawks. He played in about three games, got injured and then was suspended for the rest of the 2013-2014 season. In December he tested positive for marijuana and was moved from stage one to stage three in the Substance Abuse Program (Polzer). The length of the suspension has to do with what he got away with in 2006 also, when he played for the Denver Broncos used enhancements, went into the Canadian League and then came back |

Political ScienceIn my political analysis for the president, persuading the president towards a defined policy and the support for democracy worldwide, I would be identifying the benefits and costs of democratic transitions, the elements of making democratic transition successful and common obstacles to successful democratic. Democracy is a type of government in which all citizens of the nation together determine public policy, ability to protest or criticize, freedom of action, freedom to choose and the right to vote. Also, citizens have an equal opportunity to express their opinion. Elements that make this happen are fair and equal elections and the voice of the people. According to Dahl, a democratic process include effective participation, voting equality, enlightened understanding, control of the agenda and inclusion of adults. These are benefits of a democracy. Larry Diamond implies that democracy includes freedom |

In the article entitled "Drug Abuse by the Teenagers ", Venumadhava (2013) explores how drug abuse by the teenagers affect the society and their family, the article also highlights the reasons why the teenagers take drugs along with the most frequent drug they use. Additionally, the author suggested ways in which drug abuse by the teenagers can be prevented and how parents can deal with teenagers who are abusing drugs. Finally, the article looks at signs of drug abuse. Moreover, Venumadhava is currently an assistant Professor at Karnatak University. Venumadgava was not the only one to take interest in drug abuse in teenagers, Malhotra and Biswas (2006) wrote an article bearing the caption, "Cannabis Use and Performance in Adolescents ". Brazil and the Origin of FavelasThe origin of favelas, Brazil's informal housing settlements, are linked to the end of slavery. In the late 19th century many of country's newly freed slaves moved to Rio de Janerio in hopes of employment. With limited resources and no other alternatives, citizen began to build shelters on uninhabited land. At the time the land they settled had little value and lacked government services. These communities have grown very fast over the years, to some extent because of the government's indifference. As the population expanded over the last century, so did the building of homes. Eventually homes were built of sturdier material, bricks and mortar. According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics nearly 1.4 million people are living in Rio de Janeiro's favelas (IBGE, 2010). That is approximately twenty two percent of the city's residents. This number grows every year with more and more people moving from the countryside in the north to cities like Rio de Janeiro. Wi |

Life at an Indian Boarding School: 1912I chose this document because it's the one that kind of hit me the hardest. I also, believe it ties really well with the chapter because it shares a story about little Indian girl who was forced to go to boarding school after the settlers had claimed the Indians land for their own benefit. These Indians were treated very unfairly back in those days, they stripped basically there way of living. Instead of trying to speak to these Indians or communicate somehow, the settlers seemed filled with greed and power that they wanted some of the Indians land to first build train tracks to deliver cattle and so forth to different places faster. Then at some point they discovered gold and silver and then decided they wanted all their land. Except they went about things all wrong, they took the Indians land and didn't care. The settlers did try to help with the Treaty of Laramie which just basically supposed |

Overview of the Four FreedomsOn January 6, 1941, President Roosevelt gave an important State of the Union address that would change the perspective of many Americans forever. This speech that went down in history as the "Four Freedoms Speech" spoke of a dream for America as well as the rest of the world and encouraged the nation and congress to join the war efforts. Along side this speech was the famous paintings done by Norman Rockwell. Although these paintings presented the same ideas and beliefs, Rockwell went about presenting the ideas in a very different way. While Roosevelt used a speech to appeal to the nation, especially the minorities and congress to convince them of the need to enter war, Rockwell used paintings and mass media, to appeal to the typical American family and show them how they could contribute to the war efforts. When President Roosevelt delivered this Four Freedoms Speech his motivations for listing these freedoms was to provide a rationale as to why the US should enter WWII. A |

Hope, Humanity and Tragedy in Of Mice and MenThe American Dream is an important part to the characterizations in John Steinbeck's novel, Of Mice and Men. Each of the main characters is driven by their ambition. This ambition is important because it provides motivation and a sense of determination to each of their beings. When their ambition is gone, it becomes clear that a part of their humanity goes also. And with that loss of humanity comes other emotions. Loneliness is a persuasive emotion experienced by all of the characters in Of Mice and Men. This loneliness is profoundly existential and symbolic. The men do not want to be alone with themselves, and they do not want to be left behind by society. One of the ways Steinbeck establishes the theme of loneliness is through the setting itself. Section one of the book is set at a pleasant and peaceful river a few miles south of Soledad. Soledad, meaning "lonely place" in Spanish. The river seems very secluded and isolated. There's nothing but nature. It's a very harmonious and tranquil place. This is a complete contrast to where the rest of |

A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary RowlandsonAll Puritan communities lived both humbly and piously. But many Puritans were drawn to the mysterious atmosphere of the wilderness and the wild natives that resided amongst them. This mixture of adventure and piety affected Puritan literature greatly. In many of the captivity tales, "savage" Native Americans force Puritans to abandon their homes and follow them in bondage into unknown wilderness. The tales are written to illustrate a moral lesson, wherein the person(narrator) survives his/her ordeal through an unwavering devotion to God. Many narratives follow this formula. One of the most popular stories following this motif is Mary Rowlandson's "A Narrative of the Captivity and Restoration of Mrs. Mary Rowlandson". Her narrative is arguably the most famous captivity account of the English-Indian era. Rowlandson gives a vivid and graphic description of the eleven week captivity by the Native Americans. Her narrative gives a first person perspective into t |

The US Drone ProgramThe terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, terrorized the American population and the targeting and killing of al-Qaeda members through the use of drones by United States government began. The United States has two drone programs: one operates under the military and second operates under the C.I.A. (Since the C.I.A. drone operation operates in secrecy, it is impossible to receive accurate information and many individuals have suggested Obama administration and future administrations to install military-led drone operations to ensure rule of law remains and drone operations are open to public scrutiny). The drone attacks under the Obama administration has steadily increased – most recent drone attack occurred in Pakistan and Yemen. On October 22, 2013, reports conducted by Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International were released, claiming the United States drone campaign in Yemen and Pakistan violates the international humanitarian law. The purpose of drones is to reduce U.S. |

From the Industrial Age to the Information AgeOur world we live in has changed tremendously over time, if it is from century to century, year to year, or day to day the world is changing due to the evolving technology that so many people rely on it so heavily. What we are in now is known as the Information Age it is the biggest technological break-through since the Industrial Revolution. It has changed our lives on an individual level, community level, and national level. From now one these advances will affect us all. Many of my personal experiences with changes towards the Information Age have happened on the individual level. From growing up in the early 90's until now I have seen some advances in technology that all I could do was shake my head in amazement on how that product or thing will changes how so many people do things. These developments have changed many of my ways of doing things and I believe this will continue to happen. Hologram Traffic Lights with Teleportation SystemResearch shows that in year 2013, 265 people died in 138 accidents from plane crashes worldwide. However, research also shows that in average each year, only in the United States, there are about 1,000 deaths and 90,000 people injured from crossing red lights. Many more people have died and are injured from traffic light accidents. Which means, this is a severe issue. Furthermore the family of those being killed and wounded suffer emotionally and financially. The bread maker of the house might've been person killed and there's not going to be anyone to support the family. The members of the family and anyone else close to the person who have died might also have a trauma, making them unable to work either. The person causing the accident could be an important person, like a scientist, making a huge contribution to society, but they'll be unable to work or be fired from work because of the needless accident.
