Social Evaluation of Preverbal InfantsSocial evaluation is what we do all the time; we evaluate people around us by looking at their behaviors, and physical attributes. We decide who is friend and who is foe by social evaluation. It is clear that adults rapidly do this, but how about infants? Do they also differentiate people who help, and people who harm? The authors of the article, Hamlin, et al. hypothesized that preverbal infants do social evaluation. The hypothesis is then confirmed with the results suggesting, "preverbal infants assess individuals on the basis of their behavior towards others" (Hamlin et al. 2007). They prefer a helpful individual to a hinderer, prefer a helper to a neutral individual, and prefer a neutral individual to a hinderer. They assessed 6 and 10-month-old infants by measuring their looking times and their preference of choice. They conducted 3 experiments and in these experiments they used a helping stimulus, a hindering stimulus and a neutral stimulus. In experiment 1, when infant |

Seven SamuraiSeven Samurai is Kurosawa's and Japan's classic as well as being regarded as an all-time great beyond its nation's cinema. Part of appreciating Seven Samurai however as a film is not only admiring the quality performances, writing and directing but the hidden underlying message which it conveys and holds. Once analysed you then begin to realise that Seven Samurai is actually a well-thought and executed work of art truly and totally deserving its huge reputation. Kurosawa's classic conveys the hidden story of 1954 Japan, showing the battle within society between a failing and falling military which had lost power, and a rising set of civilians and peasants who were gaining power. Seven Samurai proposes the idea of traditional beliefs being replaced by modern beliefs something contemporary to 1954 Japan as a much needed change was required and put in place after a war against America which resulted in destruction, mass death and defeat produced a huge paradigm shift which saw Japan b |

Tosca and De Barros Estamos HechosSelect any two stories from Cuentos de Eva Luna and describe how Allende explores female characterisation in these stories. In both 'Tosca' and 'De Barro Estamos Hechos', Allende explores female characterisation in great depth. She portrays two very strong female characters who feature in two stories where the male is still quite the dominant sex. In 'Tosca' we see Maurizia as a very strong female from a young age when she tells her Father that she no longer wants to play the piano and believes that singing is her fortay; despite having an obvious talent for paino playing. Allende characterises Maurizia's strength throughout her adolescence up until she meets Ezio, and she soon marries him. This is where we see the first lapse in Maurizia's strength and she seems to 'settle' with a tradesman, albe |

Nicomathean EthicsAristotle writes that the life of study is more self-sufficient than any other kind of life (1177a). In what way is this type of life self-sufficient? If people who live the life of study need others very little, how do they fit in and contribute to communities held together by mutual need (Book V, Chapter V, Section XIII)? Moreover, the self-sufficiency we spoke of will be found in study more than in anything else. For admittedly he wise person, the just person, and the other virtuous people all need the good things necessary for life. Still, when these are adequately supplied, the just person needs other people as partners and recipients of his just actions; and the same is true of the temperate person, the brave person, and each of the others. But wise person is able, and more able the wiser he is, to |

Antony's Soliloquy in Julius CaesarAntony's frustration towards Caesar's death is clear and evident; consequently, he vows to avenge his loyal friend's brutal murder. Through the effective use of concrete, vivid, visual imagery, apostrophe, and foreshadowing in the form a prophecy, Antony predicts that the conspirators' murder of Caesar will cause chaos amongst Roman citizens and result in an upcoming civil war that is destructive in nature. Antony establishes concrete, vivid and visual imagery in his soliloquy. Evidence of blood imagery occurs when Antony becomes furious over the sight of Caesar's blood, as he says: "Woe to the hand that shed this costly blood!" (258). This line reveals Antony's hatred towards blood, especially since it is Caesar's. The presence of blood angers him because the sight of it reminds him of Caesar's murderers, Brutus, Cassius, Casca and the rest of the conspirators. He does not think Caesar, an accomplished and well-respected man, deserves to die. Therefore, he accuses the conspirators of shedding the valuable blood of a prestigious man. Antony prophesies that Caesar's death will plunge Italy into chaos, which is an example of violent i |

The Heart Is A Lonely Hunter - Carson McCullersMotivation is defined as the reason or multiple reasons one has for acting or behaving in a particular way. We, as people, are all motivated by something. A clear example of motivation is shown in the fictional novel, The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter, by Carson McCullers. A specific character in this novel who represents motivation throughout the story is Mick Kelly. Mick Kelly is a teen living in the 1930's who comes from a poor family. She carries around a lot of responsibility for someone her age; such as worrying about her family's financial issues, getting her own job, focusing on school, and taking care of her younger siblings. With all of this going on her life, she finds things to motivate her to keep going and not give up. She has a |

Mammy in the Modern WorldOne of my favorite childhood memories was going to the carnival with my grandma whenever it was in town. My grandma and I would spend a whole Saturday riding all of the rides and eating as much junk food as our stomachs would allow. Then one year we came across a booth where an artist was drawing caricatures. I didn't know what a caricature was at first so I decided to look it up. The Merriam Webster Dictionary Online defines caricature as, "An exaggeration by means of often ludicrous distortion or parts or characteristics" ("Caricature"). It seemed fun and harmless, so we decided to spend the $15 and give it a try. I remember the process. The guy looked us over and told us to smile, and then he started to draw. It only took him about six minutes or so to draw the caricature. After he finished adding in the color to the picture he gave it to us to look at. The first parts of the caricature that I noticed were the humungous teeth and the micro-sized ears he gave me. I knew t |

Women's Rights and PropagandaIn the late 1800s, the way American society treated women is very different than how they treat women today. Women were not considered full citizens, and they could not take part in many things that men could. They could not have any role in politics, and everything they did was under the control of their husband. More importantly, women's voting rights were nonexistent. Many women felt so strongly on the topic of not being able to vote that they began forming groups to get voting rights; they were known as suffragettes. Suffragettes upset the public by trying to convince more and more people to be on their side of the issue. As a result, the "anti-suffragists" created propaganda to prevent the public from taking the suffragette side. The propaganda affected both anti-suffragists and suffragists emotionally and physically. After seeing the propaganda, many people had switched their opinions on how they felt towards the issue. However, women worked very hard and used many ta |

The Influences of J.R.R. Tolkien"In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit," as J.R.R. Tolkien wrote in The Hobbit. How did Tolkien conceive such an unlikely and unique creature? This creature resembles all the good of man, without his evil vices. One should never discount hobbits for their stature or peaceful nature for they are quite capable of herculean tasks when they set their minds to it. In other words, hobbits are the perfect creatures for Tolkien's epic series, The Lord of The Rings, which is set in the ethereal realm of Middle Earth. Hobbits, among many characters, places, and peoples, are based on many outside influences. In the epic, The Lord of the Rings, Norse mythology, English literature, and Tolkien's own experiences, contributed to the development of one of the most significant and unique fantasy stories in Western culture. Tolkien was always interested in Norse mythology, which is one the reasons why Tolkien got many of his ideas from the mythology. Many characters in The Lord of |

Book Essay - The Kite RunnerI have read the book The kite runner written by Kahled Hosseini. While reading the book I started thinking about the title, as I think many of the ones that read the book also does. Why did Kahled give the book this specific name and are there many reasons or only one? I am going to write an analysis out of my perspective and my opinions. According to my analyse I can see more than one signification concerning the title. The one that I think has the most to do with the book is the one where the book takes its turning point. In the books turning point the main subject and act concerns kite running. Before the kite contest and war in Afghanistan Amirs father, Baba, was a very important person in Kabul and he was also Amir's precious role model. Amir felt like he was a big disappointment to his father because he was not like him when it came to actions. Hassan, who was a hazara servant in Baba's house, got as much attention as Amir himself which Amir had a hard time to understand. Amir w |

EU Single Market and International Business1. Introduction to EU Single Market One of the main tendencies characterizing today's world economy is globalization. Thus, firstly increase interstate competition for economic resource, and secondly there is a development towards interstate unions. This was the main purpose of forming the European Union as they tended to form a united market without any borders. In 1968 all trade tariffs were cancelled but only on 1st January 1993 the Single Market was properly settled. The European Committee eliminated all physical, technical and tax barriers left on that moment throw legal adaptations. It become easier for people to live and work in other states and also the uniform European rules which have replaced the national establishments. The necessity to follow the previous regulations leaded to unneeded rise in prices and barriers for small companies being engaged in export to EU scales. Nowadays European Union is the biggest single market in the world and includes 27 member countries and |

Krakauer's Journalistic ApproachThe idea of escape from the endless amounts of subdivisions and strip malls, where not only is your future premeditated by others but is assiduously planned out to a horrifying degree, has almost a lustrous appeal to some people. To completely eradicate that former life to exchange for one where lush greenery envelopes you, where sleep takes place under the myriad of shining stars, where the bright spots of glistening, fresh dew rest in the morning, where home is the road can at points seem more tantalizing than day-to-day life in suburbia. Although it may seem like a lovely proposition to go and frolic in the wild to the average, aesthetic voyager looking for philosophical guidance, many do not do said frolicking. Chris McCandless was one of the few who chose this type of life: to live completely off the land and test himself in ways, "that mattered," and as Krakauer's friend Roman points out, "very few, if any, of the people who call McCandless incompetent have ever done it either." Through his journalistic approach in his long form feature piece, Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer is able to piece together the chilling story of Chris McCandless and give a better und |

Nail Patella SyndromeNail Patella Syndrome is categorized as an autosomal dominant disorder. An autosomal dominant disease only requires one parent to carry the gene in order to pass it to the offspring. Offspring of parents with autosomal dominant diseases have a fifty percent chance of having the disease and most likely passing the gene to its offspring. Nail Patella Syndrome occurs on the long arm of Chromosome 9, and is caused by a mutation of the LMX1B gene. It is a genetic, connective tissue disorder that causes small, poorly developed nails and kneecaps, but also affects other parts of the body. Some people with Nail Patella Syndrome have one or both knee caps missing, arm bones may be dislocated at the elbow and the pelvic bone may be abnormally shaped. Many patients with Nail Patella usually live a long life, but some patients succumb to kidney failure, or become confined to a wheelchair. Nail-patella syndrome is characterized by deformities in the nails, knees, elbows and pelvis. The severity of nail-patella syndrome is different in each affected individual. Even members of the same family who are affected with nail patella will display different symptoms. Deformities in nails |

Left Brain, Right Brain, Whole Brain?Have you ever heard people say that they tend to be more of a right-brained thinker or a left-brained thinker? From books to television shows you have most likely heard the phrase mentioned numerous times. Perhaps you've taken an online test to determine which type best describes you. I have, and it heightened my curiosity for how my brain works, and if the specific hemispheres within it determine my traits. In psychology, the left-brain, right-brain dominance theory in based on what is known as the lateralization of brain function. Lateralization of brain function means that there are certain mental processes that are mainly specialized to one of the brain's left or right hemispheres. For example, it has become common knowledge that in most people the left-brain is dominant for language. The right hemisphere, on the other hand, is involved more strongly in emotional processing and representing the mental states of others. However, the distinctions are not as clear-cut as the myth make |

The Civil Rights MovementThe civil rights movement happened as a result of racial discrimination towards black Americans and it was for black Americans to oppose against it. The progression of the civil rights movement for African Americans advanced through many important events. However World War 2 can arguably be said to have the greatest impact in African American history. This was because the Second World War emphasised the achievements black Americans encountered and the extent of racial discrimination in America. For a lot of black Americans in the years 1871-1981 conditions was very hard as they were being deprived of their rights. For example the rights to good jobs, schools, houses, as well as voting. White violence against black Americans continued from the Klu Klux Klan. World War 2 for the first time gave black Americans the chance to achieve in accomplishments, which without the War wouldn't be possible. For example without the Second World War the Tuskegee Airman wouldn't be recognised amongst th |

The End of the Printed BookIn this paper I am going to discuss some problems regarding physical books. I will present you two main reasons which, in my opinion, will cause printed books to be non-existent in the future or at least keeps their amount on a minimal level. The first and the main reason is an economical one. Imagine the whole process that is behind making books which I will now simply describe. First, you need workers and machines that will cut trees which are obviously necessary. After that you must deliver this wood to a facility that use a special processing called pulping to turn the wood into paper. Then again, you need to transport the paper to a book printing company when they print a desired amount of books using offset printing. And what fo |

Subjective Well-BeingSubjective well-being is broad concept that includes experiencing pleasant emotions, low levels of negative moods, and high life satisfaction. Ed diener a famous psychologist wrote a great article of SWB. The key points and precise summary of that article is given below. The first concept that has been discussed in the article by diener is of good life. He ponders on the question that; what is the good life? Besides the old defining characteristics that are love others, pleasure or self-insight, another idea about good life is mentioned. The idea is that it's desirable for people themselves to think that they are living good lives. The subjective definition of quality of life is democratic, that is, because it is each individual's right to decide whether his or her life is worthwhile. It is this approach to defining good life that has come to be called "Subjective well-being " and in informal term labeled as "Happiness ". SWB refers to evaluation of people's life. Response Paper on LanguageLanguage is a very powerful tool that humans created in order to communicate and as a child you are taught a language. As we learn how to speak we are able to communicate and be better understood. Then we are prompted to go to school in order to learn how to be literate and the language that we learned begins to be sharpened by not only your teachers but also your classmates and then friends. The language(s) you learn depends on where you come from and that language(s) shape the way you think. Knowing more than one language lets you see things from more than one perspective. Language differences can also cause conflicts. Before we learn how to speak we are unable to properly express ourselves. Children we learn precisely the language taught to us, most likely your family like Paul Robert states in "Speech Communities "(139). Our parents most likely begin by encouraging us to say words by repeating it to us until we mimic them, then we are then motivated to learn how to communicate by speech. Robert describes the motivations for speaking wanting to communicate and to be adm |

High School and College SuccessJudging from my experience in high school, I look back today as an alumni and tell myself that I was not challenged to my full potential. I came to this conclusion during a competition of Academic Decathlon, where I competed against many schools nationwide. As I took time to interact with students outside of my team, they asked me what we did to prepare ourselves for the big day. When I asked the same question they replied with outrageous studying tactics and various mandatory study sessions on the weekends, on top of various AP and honors courses and extracurricular on the side. Hearing their stories made me ponder around the many students I see lurking through the halls of my school aimlessly with no sense of urgency to go to class on time or ambition to maintain above a 2.5 GPA. Speaking in regards to my community, the education system imprinted in this area does not challenge students to their full potential, which lowers our API score and defames the schools in this neighborhood. As I await my graduation this summer from San Fernando High School I know that had this institution enforc |

Vietnam and Philip CaputoPhilip Caputo is a product of the US Marines system during the Vietnam War. The Marine Corp had very extreme policies and expectations that precipitated their questionable actions during the war. Caputo's involvement and unjust persecution is a result of the Marine Corps training and action that leads to the development of psychological problems for its marines. For Caputo, his mindset that leads to his alleged murder is developed in several stages in the time leading to the event; Training, fieldwork, and office work. The training process for the marines is the time of the most extreme for a marine's mindset. This is the stage of initial shock of the Corps morals and expectations. Later upon arriving in Vietnam, psychological changes are brought forth gradually through experiences. Training for Caputo established the base for which his later unstable mind would be built upon. This base is established by the discipline that is forced upon Caputo while in camp on the mainland and whi |

The Real Meaning of SuccessWhat is Success? If we are able to learn from the many failures we experience throughout life, and do things differently we have found a clear path to success. Bill Gates, Michael Jordan, and Stephen King; what do all these people have in common? The answer is that they are successful, but they were not at first. Michael Jordan was cut from the varsity Basketball team at his school his sophomore year. Stephen Kings first novel was rejected by publishers a jaw dropping 30 times!Last but not least, Bill Gates one of the richest most polarizing figures in America failed when he tried to launch his first company. All that aside I believe that success means different things to different people. One person who graduates college and is not able to find a job right away might believe that they have failed to achieve their goal. On the other hand someone else will believe they are successful just by graduating. However success that stems from failure is the most intriguing to me. Perhaps on |

Football Saved My LifeJuvenile delinquency is on the rise in the black community. Delinquency commonly occurs to teenagers that live in dangerous environments and have too much leisure time. Consequences of juvenile delinquency can range from bad reputations to even legal trouble. I can remember the time I almost crossed that path. During the time I lived in the projects in Nashville, Tennessee. Luckily for me God had other plans in store for me. I was well on my way until my parents signed me up to play football. Playing football kept me out of the dangers of the streets, got me into school, and taught me responsibility. If it was not for football who knows where I might have ended up. Most of the young adults from my neighborhood were either murdered or had frequent visits to jail. Even my closest friends, whom people would have assumed were good role mo |
