A Good Way to Look at DeathThe biblical expression "ashes to ashes, dust to dust" ("Ashes to ashes") relates to Bryant's view because death is natural, begins with nature, and ends with nature. This biblical expression can be traced throughout the bible and represents the formation, life of man, and destruction, death of man. Bryant's work, "Thanatopsis", clearly depicts the same idea of life and death. Thanatopsis shows that death is a venerable force of nature that is inevitable, but is an eloquent necessity. Thus, the biblical expression and "Thanatopsis" agree that death is natural and should not be feared because "dust" will return to "dust". First, one must understand the background of the quote "ashes to ashes, dust to dust", before on can fully understand how it relates to "Thanatopsis". The quote is taken from Genesis 3:19: "By the sweat of your bro |

After Apple Picking by Robert FrostRobert Frost's "After Apple Picking" is a poem that depicts the natural order of human life and the creative minds we as humans possess. Frost composes his poem in a way that allows the reader to understand the main point of this poem, relating nature to humanity. Robert Frost is known for his in-depth examination of philosophical themes through the imagery he uses, such as the harvest mentioned in the poem. Frost is thoroughly analytical of all aspects of apple-picking and is able to create comparisons between nature and humanity. His comparisons are drastic in what they Through the use of figurative language and a sophisticated form of lyrics, Robert Frost is able to mirror the processes of a harvest to the sin of humanity, the life and death of human beings, and exhaustion. Frost in "After Apple Picking" introduces the reader to the speaker of the poem who is describing the area around him as he begins to yield an apple from a tree. The speaker is very proper w |

Restaurant Review - Sushi PalaceThe Sushi Place is a high-priced, elegant restaurant specializing in Sushi. I love the experience of dining at the Sushi Place because the atmosphere is very fancy, the food is great, and the service is excellent. A particular visit on Monday with the company of my mother proved to us that The Sushi Place lives up to the expectations of its guests. My mother and I really enjoy coming to this extravagant restaurant. The sushi place will be clearly our first choice when it comes to find restaurants were my family and I could spend a great time. The Sushi Place restaurant is a well-known corporate chain of restaurants that offers a wide variety of Asian dishes. This fancy and fabulous restaurant is located inside a popular mall in Juarez called Las Misiones, which is a fairly busy mall. Therefore, there is no parking lot next to the restaurant. We had parked about a block away which was no inconvenience since it was a beautiful night. However, had it been a cold night and a special occasion, the absence of a lot would have been disappointing. Since it was late at night I thought it would be easier than usual to find parking, being so lat |

Water - Energy, Filtration and ConsumptionWater is the most vital source needed for basic survival of not only humans, but animals and plants a well. It is a necessity of life, and our Earth consists 75% of water. However, not just any water can be used, only cleaned purified water. Water is used in an unlimited amount of ways. It is mainly used for drinking, cooking, cleaning, and growing crops. Living in a developed country, we may not see it, but the lack of access to clean water is a major problem in today's society. "About 1 out of every 6 people living today do not have adequate access to water, and more than double that number lack basic sanitation, for which water is needed" ("Provide Access to Clean Water" P.1). This scarcity of clean water has led to diseases and poor health for many people worldwide. Adults and children with no access to clean water are forced to spend hours of the day collecting and transporting water. 1,400 children die from diseases caused by unsafe and non-sanitized water eac |

A Place Called UtopiaUtopia is a place that can only exist in ones dreams it can never be found on a map. The idea of a society with a perfect community is nearly impossible to create. Many great philosophers have tried to do such a thing, however they have never reached the "ideal" society. One such philosopher is Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson uses his ideas of a perfect society in "The Declaration of Independence." Another philosopher that speaks of a utopia is Plato. He speaks of a utopia that "flourishes" good moral values over fame and fortune. This is similar to Moore's view on utopia. Moore finds that in his utopia an ideal society is a self-sustaining one, a community that provides for itself and relies on no one for food and supplies. Moore also believes that each person should also be assigned a job or task; personally this sounds like communism. Aside from a perfect society there is a film called "Children of Men" that depicts a dystopia; a society that does |

God and the Creation of the EarthFor years, people's views on the Earth's creation has been divided into strictly two categories; Biblical or Science (Evolution). There are many issues between the two ideas which makes it hard to understand both sides. In order for someone to make a decision in how they believe the world was created, they must first understand a little bit about each side. I will touch on both sides as well as talk about how religious ideas can coexist with science ideas. In the past, individuals had to choose between biblical creation or science creation (Evolution), but because of author John Haught, some can now combine these ideas and can even form their own idea on how the earth was created. In Genesis 1 and 2, the bible talks about creation. In the bible there is two creation stories, however, these two stories get combined together whenever the church talks about creation. The first story explains how God created the world from nothing in seven days, each day adding more and more to his crea |

Ethical Dilemma - Gender IssuesIn a society where pressure is put on categorizing and classifying newborn babies into the female or male gender, there is little room for ambiguity. However birth defects affiliated with the genitals typically aren't clear. Some doctors unfortunately view these birth defects as a medical emergency, putting pressure onto the already anxious parent, about how to solve the problem. This is where the ethical dilemma comes into play. Should doctors and parents treat ambiguous genitalia as a medical emergency, by forgoing genital assignment treatments or should treatment be left up to the child when he or she is an adult? The answer is that it is not a medical emergency, and that a decision of that stature should not be made lightly. When faced with the reality that the wrong gender may be assigned to a child, parents may have to deal with the repercussions of confl |

History of the Ritz TheaterThere are many historic buildings and places to see in Georgie; however, not so many in Thomaston, Georgia. This state contains 59,441 square miles. Within 300 miles of Thomaston, Ga. there are several exhibits, museums, arts centers, and many more you can see or visit. My personal favorite is where my hometown theatre is based off of, 'The Ritz'. The Ritz is originally in Brunswick, Georgia. The building itself was built in 1899 and made of unpainted brick; it was then painted white to have a more modern feel. It is a 3 story Victorian building originally built to be the Grand Opera House. It featured ornate brick and stone work that was used for the legitimate stage. When I went to see this historical building, I learned more than I ever thought I would about any historic place. The Ritz served as a theater for vaudeville. Vaudeville is a theatrical genre of variety entertainments. It was the most popular in the U.S. and Canada from the 1880's to the 1930's. This was a seri |

Kyoto Protocol and Global WarmingBackground The Kyoto Protocol is an treaty between developed countries that establishes binding restrictions on the emission greenhouse gases to mitigate the global climate change caused by the greenhouse effect (Schieirmeier, 2010). The greenhouse effect is the warming effect of the sun on greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, that trap the heat in the atmosphere. The more of these gases that are present, the more heat is prevented from dispersing into space and the more the planet warms. The greenhouse effect is important for life on Earth, an excess of greenhouse gases increases global warming outside tolerable levels. The goal of the Kyoto Protocol is to stabilize anthropogenic emissions at a level that will not cause more damage to the atmosphere. The first treaty was signed in Kyoto, Japan in 1997 and came into effect on February 16, 2005 with Russia's ratification (Schieirmeier, 2010). It detailed targets for emissions and a collective emissions reduction of 5.2% below the emission levels of 1990 . Fulfillment of the treaty required participating countries to enact policies and measures to cut down and compensate for local emissions and increase assimi |

Test: Concepts of PhilosophyFinal Examination 1. Heraclitus makes the statement that "you can't step into the same river twice." This comes from the idea that the river is flowing and ever changing. With its constant flow, by the time you put your foot in take it out and put it back in again, the water you first touched will already be traveling down the river. For Heraclitus, reality is just like this changing flowing river. In reality, things are always changing and time flies by with the blink of an eye. Time does not stop, it is a constant flow of life and once it is gone we cannot get that moment back. No matter what we do, things in life are constantly changing. Change occurs because the elements are fighting against one another to be the one. These changes are occurring because the one substance we are trying to get, is working against itself in a way. The four elements of fire, water, earth, and air are in a constant war mutilating the purity of the one, being the solitary structure of reali |

My Mother: Wonder WomanMy mother an angel in the sky. Since her departure in 2006, I recall memories of moments I shared with my loving mother. She wasn't just my mom, she was my "Wonder Woman". Always putting her children and loved ones needs before her own. Her welcoming personality, compassionate, always giving and so full of love. And her magnificent skills of traditional Puerto Rican style cooking will always be remember by friends and family. Doña Virgenmina as she was known, was charismatic and had a contagious smile. Her laughter was even more infectious. Just thinking about her laughter and I feel her presence and become overwhelmed with joy. Even if she was feeling sad, she would say one of her favorite quotes in Spanish "Uno no se puede ahogarse en un vaso de agua" (One cannot allow themselves to die drowning in a cup of water). And with that said, she would smile at life's ups and downs. Anyone who had the |

Turning in the NFLThe National Football League (NFL) commissioner, Roger Goodell, has been under heavy scrutiny because of the unethical domestic violence policy the NFL currently has in place. The NFL's domestic violence policy is a suspension for up to three games, depending on how serious the NFL commissioner thinks the case is. Although some may be in favor of the NFL policy regarding domestic violence, the fact that the United States law protects women's rights, and the NFL policy has negatively affected their partnerships with sponsor, proves why the NFL needs to change their domestic violence policy on how to discipline the players. Domestic violence is, nicely put, shameful, and should not be tolerated at any level regardless of class or status. A maximum of three games is unjust, instead, the victim should decide the punishment. Some people may argue that women who get attacked by professional football players deserve the beating. It is understandable to view where this thought comes from bec |

Gun Control and the Rights of AmericansHow can we allow innocent lives to repeatedly be sacrificed in the name of freedom? Gun control has been the leading source of discussion for many years now. Many have debated if it should be banned or kept. For me, I feel that in order for us to lower the crime rate, gun control would have to be made as a main focus and strictly enforced. I believe that guns should only be used by soldiers and police officers because of their job titles; so why not we stick to the smaller weapons like, taser, pepper spray or bats as protection. Base on my strong opinions I will be discussing my view point on gun usage; the danger it has within our community, the effects it has on our economy, and some of the Social effects that comes along with it. Figure 1: This cartoon shows how violence is portrayed commonly on TV (www.cartoonstock.com). First and far most, within our community we witness gun violence commonly; whether it on the news, in the newspaper, or in a movie as shown in figure 1. Each |

Obasan by Joy KogawaIn the novel Obasan, written by Joy Kogawa, an important event occurred that changed the lives of many Japanese Canadians during World War II. Following the bombing of Pearl Harbor the racism towards the Japanese Canadians became more intense. The Canadian government believed that their intentions were favorable towards everyone by capturing and moving the Japanese Canadians from their homes, in British Columbia, to internment camps. The treatment of Japanese Canadians during the war was an unjustified act on the part of the Canadian government and due to the Charter of Rights and Freedom the act committed by the government would not be tolerated by anyone in today's modern society. Prior to the war, about 22,000 Japanese Canadians lived in British Columbia, with more than half of them being born there. It is believed that the internment camps came to be because of a sense of racism towards the Japanese Canadians from the government and other Canadian citizens. Following the bombing o |

Gender Roles in World War IThe World War I officially ended progressivism in the United States and left the nation with great impacts on various groups of the society. However, the most significant impacts happened to occur on the role of men and women, that the war has altered the status of the genders in the United States. These changes occurred virtually and differently, also were somehow permanent and had a long-lasting effect which also helped to inform the nowadays society. The World War I was a pivotal time for women, because it gave women an opportunity to prove themselves in a male-dominated society, doing more than cleaning the house and tending to the children. With so many men going to war, there was a large gap in employment and, in response women came in to replace the men. The YMCA, which stands for Young Women's Christian Association, helped the engagement of women's war-related work, and the Red Cross, which admitted thousands of women volunteers to provide most of the health and sanitary servi |

Paying College AthletesAll of these college players are the reason why the NCAA makes so much money and they don't see a cent in their time there. Collegiate sports has been regarded as amateur ever since the NCAA program came to be. This is one of the main reasons why people don't believe college athletes should get paid. With collegiate sports attendees at all time highs this is no longer the case. These players deserve their pay as they do a lot for the university as a whole. On the other hand these players coaches are making millions, such as John Calipari Head Coach of the Kentucky Wildcats Men's basketball team who made 5.5 million dollars last season. The NCAA should come up with a payment system for these players whether it's a monthly/yearly payment plan these players deserve a salary. College players have many responsibilities outside of sports such as their all important education. It is big task to try and juggle both education and sports especially when so much of their time goes into the sports side of this; most would argue its equivalent to a full time job. A popular argument against why collegiate players should not be paid is that i |

Application Essay - Robert H. Smith Business SchoolThe interest I have in joining the Robert H. Smith School of Business stems up from the belief that the skills, knowledge and competencies immersed from the proposed MS program will enhance my chances of realizing my long-held academic and professional goals. I must admit that my passion in the field of accounting was cultivated at a very tender age after observing how my mother, who is a Certified Public Accountant, used to purport her duties diligently, effectively and with utmost precision. I remember well how as a little girl I used to accompany my mother to her office so that she could take care of me while working, an aspect that ensured that rather than joining my friends to play with toys and dolls, I had to content with accounting records, statements and reports being my childhood playmates. The Life of Josephine BakerMy name is Rehanna Little and I have had the great opportunity to grow up next to such an inspiring women names Josephine Baker. From being a great friend of Baker, I was able to understand the way she actually lived her life and the struggles she went through. I was inspired to write about Baker because through all the obstacles she faced, not once did she ever give up her dream of being a performer. Being an African American in the 1900's was not an easy thing to do. Racism was very common in the lifetime of Josephine. Baker did not start off living the life everyone dreams of but worked her way to the top regardless of what was said to her and how many times she had been denied due to the color of her skin. Baker had been taught to work since the age of 13. Her work ethic was also so persistent and she was such a strong and independent women, which is why she inspires me in many ways. Josephine toured the United States with the Jones Family Band and The Dixie Steppers in 1919 performing comical skits. She tried to pursue her career |

Formation of PakistanThe formation of Pakistan in traditional history is that of a political evolution in the Muslim communities of North-western and eastern India. It was a political formation that was to fulfill the desire for an autonomous state for the Muslim community. Pakistan was to represent its namesake, 'the land of the pure.' It was an effort towards "peace and harmony as a free and independent people," as addressed by Jinnah in his presidential address to the Muslim League in 1940(Guha). Contemporary study of the partition and the formation of Pakistan itself is not as poetic. It can be argued that Pakistan is the result of the British seeking support for World War II. With the Congress ministries in the provinces resigning over the British declaration of India being at war with Hitler's Germany, it appeared to Indians as a reassertion of high-handed British imperialism.(Metcalf) This is when the Muslim League enacted the 'Pakistan Resolution' and demanded independent Muslim states. Solomon Northup - Twelve Years a SlavePart of the significance of Northup's memoir is its description of everyday life. Mr. McQueen recreates, with texture and sweep, scenes of slavery's extreme privations and cruelties, but also its work rhythms and routines, sunup to sundown, along with the unsettling intimacies it produced among the owners and the owned." Do you agree that it's actually the everyday details that make the film a very effective portrayal of history? Why or why not? Analysis of TriflesWomen are the only oppressed group in our society that live in intimate association with their oppressors which can lead caged, unfulfilled lives. Trifles is a play by Susan Glaspell written in 1916. John Wright, who owned a farm, had been murdered the night before by strangulation in his bed. His wife, Minnie Wright, was accused of the homicide because she was the only one present at the time of his death. This one act play focuses on the mystery and interaction between men and women at the time. The sheriff, county attorney, and a neighbor, Mr. Hale arrive at the home to look for evidence and treat the home like a crime scene causing them to miss out on vital clues for the case. Mrs. Peters, the sheriff's wife, and Mrs. Hale arrive at the home to collect items that Mrs. Wright requested. Unlike the men they view the property as an actual home with meaning and not just another crime scene. For this reason they are able to uncover the motive by paying attention to the trifles the mean |

Pearl Harbor Bombing (Tora! Tora! Tora!)"Tora! Tora! Tora!"" is a 1970 war film directed by Richard Fleischer that narrates the historic Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The movie revolves around the decisions made by the key officials in different departments of both Japan and the United States (US) government. It tackles significant events that concern the varied opinions and judgments of each character in the film, which led to the tragic 1941 bombing in Hawaii that killed over 3,500 civilians, sunk or damaged 21 battle ships, and destroyed 188 aircrafts. The United States was greatly threatened by Japan's imperialist ambitions, most especially after its occupation in southern Indo-China; however, the American military force was not yet ready to go to war during that time. Japan, on the other hand, was already devising a plan on the U.S. Pacific Fleet that was based on Pearl Harbor. They decided to focus on Hawaii because the Japanese believed that this would be their greatest conflict. Despite receiving a warning of an |
