Literary Reflection - Twilight: New MoonNew Moon is the sequel to Twilight, a romantic fantasy film based on the books by Stephenie Mayer. The movie involves the fictional characters of vampires and werewolves. Among the werewolf characters is Jacob Black, played by Taylor Lautner and the rest of his Native community, which includes Chaske Spencer, Tyson Houseman, Alex Meraz, Bronson Pelletier and Kiowa Gordon; all of whom are extremely attractive. I think that many people applaud the character of Jacob and other members in his community because of their physical appearance. In my opinion, New Moon had the best looking cast of Natives, in comparison to a movie that had Natives, such as The Lone Ranger, where the Native character Tonto portrayed by Johnny Depp wore unappealing clothing, and face paint. Therefore, this shows why many people applaud the characters of Jacob and his community. In most movies such as Pocahontas, the Natives are seen as savages, uncivilized and dangerous beings whose lives are less important than |

Racism - To Kill A MockingbirdSentence to death, living in the corners of the ghetto, neither trustworthy or accepted, all because of your skin color. Racism was an influential part of society in the 1930s' as seen in To Kill a Mockingbird. In this story, racism kept the black poor and the white wealthy, the black community was not considered as trustworthy as the white and black people weren't considered as high or respected as much as white people. Black people weren't considered up to standard or unacceptable and were seldom included in white society. The black community was cast and pushed away from white people. Their homes in fact weren't in the same neighborhood, they didn't even share the same church. "First Purchase African M.E. Church was in the quarters outside the southern town limits... called First Purchase because it was paid for from the first earnings of freed slaves." (Lee p.118) The different races are divided and the black people were forced to make their community and homes down in t |

Fall of a Pagan, Rise of a SaintThe role of religion has played a major part in every aspect of our world's history. Every country, big or small, every person peasant or king, even every time historic or modern has been affected by religion in one way or another. Among all of the regions in the world the most popular is Christianity. And in early European history Christianity spread with an almost fire like pace across much of the continent. With only some resistance Christianity would grow to become the dominate ideology in Europe. But the spread of Christianity in each area or region has its own unique story. One of the most intriguing of those stories, being the spread of Christianity throughout much of what would be considered today as modern Russia. This due in large to the man known today as Saint Vladimir of Kiev. His personal acceptance of Christianity at the near turn of the first millennium is almost legend in Russia. For it was Vladimir's personal conversion that would lead to Kievan Rus's entire conversi |

1984 Research EssayWho is looking over us? Who authorizes us? And most importantly, who teaches us right from wrong? In the novel 1984 by George Orwell, Big Brother and the Thought Police was in control of Oceania's way of living and even though we may not see it, our government plays a similar role to what is seen as abnormal in this story. The themes in this novel are very accurate to today's way of living. Even though we do not have telescreens, V chips and area trackers computers and/or apps do exist, and are very much alike. A lot has changed in these last decades, but the hunger for power that the government has, causes the surveillance that we are now a victim of. The setting in 1984, Oceania's government, our modern world and government are some of the different ways that the contemporary surveillance can be compared to. Both the Thought Police and US government supervise their society by visual surveillance. For example, right when Winston and Julia begin to think they are in a safe position b |

Slavery in SudanIntroduction Slave trade and slavery officially ended in Sudan in 2003. However, modern-day slavery still exists. The International Labor Organization (ILO) and the UN stipulate that by 2006, the number of individuals held in slavery worldwide was estimated at 12-27 million, surpassing any earlier numbers, including the 16 thru 19th century slave trade of the Trans -Atlantic (Salett, 2006). Obviously, the global population is much higher than it was in the 19th century, but the scale of the problem nonetheless remains staggering. Between 700,000 and 900,000 people, mostly women and children are sold, bought, transported and held annually across international borders. In Sudan, slavery is an incredibly pernicious problem, especially after the independence of South Sudan. Civil war contributed to this immensely, and abductions are renowned worldwide. Since 1956 to this day, NSAS (n. d) estimates that more than 4 million black Africans have been killed since 1956 as a result of Arab |

The Concept of Chivalry in LiteratureConventional values such as chivalry and the old fashioned lifestyle between a man and a woman was the way of life back in the 1800-1900's. "The Yellow Wallpaper" was written in 1892 and "A&P" was written in 1961. Standards in these societies were a far cry from how society runs nowadays. "The Yellow Wallpaper", by Charlotte Perkins Gilman's shows us not only the mentality of a husband during this time period, but also that of a professional. John, the narrator's husband AND doctor, keeps his wife estranged from family and friends, including her own child, to recover from what we now call postpartum blues. While Sammy, the young store clerk, from John Updike's story "A&P", shows us how a young boy believes chivalry is the decisive way into a girl's heart to defend her honor. The dictionary defines conventional values to be when one conforms or adheres to the accepted standards. These values are usually something different for different societ |

Traditional Marriage - The True UnionThe controversial issue of same sex marriage did not become popular until 1969 when protesters in New York launched the gay rights movement. Christians in America have led movements against countless issues including: alcoholism, witchcraft, communism, and abortion, but homosexuality strikes a deep wound as it attacks the fundamental building blocks of a family (Beirich). Throughout history, most societies and religions have viewed homosexuality with disdain or have completely forbidden it. As a Christian, I believe that homosexuality is morally and biblically wrong, no matter how you look at it. I not only believe that the Bible is the final authority on homosexuality, as it states gay marriage is wrong, but I also believe that this sin affects children in this type of home. It is not natural to have only one mother or one father. Homosexuality and gay marriage is a choice and is not influenced by genetics. Anyone can choose not to be gay; its like choosing not to be an alcoholic. |

America the PoorThe United States' unemployment rate is at a devastating high. In July, according to an article from Economist, "the unemployment rate had risen fractionally to 9.2%, both Republicans and Democrats declared the data proof of the folly of the other party's policies. How, Republicans asked, could Democrats even consider raising taxes when the economy is so weak? How, Democrats retorted, could Republicans advocate big cuts in the safety net when so many Americans are in desperate need?" It's no secret our economy is going down the drain. While both sides are busy pointing fingers at the other, our nation's hard-working families are struggling just to make ends-meat. Our veterans come home from war battered, with so many spending the rest of their lives living on city streets, swallowing their pride and asking for spare change from passersby. In 2010, the Houston Chronicle reported that veterans made up about 30 percent of the homeless population. The U.S. government, like |

Socrates and ConfuciusSocrates was a Greek Philosopher, he was a well known figure in Athens. Socrates showed the World a new way of thinking. We only know of his life through the writings of his students, Plato and others, rather than writing books and recording his thoughts himself, he orally passed on his thoughts to many young people of his time, one of which is Plato. He found out that he was wise when told that the Oracle of Delphi had revealed to one of his friends that Socrates was the wisest man in Athens, he didn't boast about this, but wanted to prove the Oracle wrong. So Socrates started asking everyone he could find, "what was truly worthwhile in life" he felt that if any one knew the answer to this then they must surely be wiser than him, but instead everyone that he asked, all pretended to know something they clearly did not know. So finally he realized that the Oracle must be right after all, and that he was the wisest man in Athens because he alone was prepared to admit his own ig |

Animals in LiteratureWe humans have co-habituated with animals for at least a millennia. Not only that but we have also claimed dominion over all things on this earth. Co-habituating and dominating. These two things seem at odds with each other. We have a strained, yet symbiotic relationship with these creatures. We need to nourish them, to nourish us. So what does that make these creatures? Commodities to be grown, traded and used or to be beloved companions? This dynamic makes telling what is right and wrong difficult. Since we are dealing with living creatures, do they have morals as we do? As the dominant species on earth, do we have an obligation to protect these animals, or do as we please with them? There is no denying that we do, at times, desensitize ourselves to the complexities of these living creatures. I would like to explore the relationship between humans and animals through the stories of Blue, the horse, from the story "Am I Blue?" and the elephant from George Orwell's story, & |

Notes on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn1. I chose The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn as a book for my report because this title caught my attention. I have never read other books from this author, Mark Twain, and nobody recommended it to me. I only picked up this book because of the topic: adventures. Adventures histories always interest me because they frequently have exciting parts such as try to safe someone, putting the main character in risk of life. 2. The history happened probably before 1860s because one of the characters, Jim, is a slave. The history begins in the Widow Douglas' house, the woman that is in charge of the main character, follow in the Pap's house – father main character's house, but the most scenes is on the river, in a canoe or raft. It ends at the Aunt Sally's house. 3. The main character is called by Huckleberry Finn, or just Huck Finn. He is a young boy with blond hair. Huck does not have mother, only father who is too rude with his son. So, Huck learned to be impolite. He always appears |

Francesca and Paolo Dante's InfernoLove is romantic, but when is a forbidden love; the outcome can be tragic just as the story of Francesca and Paolo. People that have affairs know their actions are wrong, but are strongly led by their current feelings which often cannot be controlled, completely unaware of the repercussions a forbidden love can bring. Francesca and Paolo experienced this love affair, their love was sincere but it was the act that placed them in Hell. even though society portrays this action as sinful, a person cannot resist of who they fall in love with, and is one's choice if they want to act on it or not. Dante wrote the romantic affair story between Francesca and Paolo in "The Inferno" in Canto V and how the power of love led them to be punished together for adultery. Coming into the second circle of Hell, Dante encounters Minos who is the judge of the damned sinners; he tells the souls where to go as they arrive. Dante sees souls flying in circles like birds "Here, there, up, down, |

First 1,000 Days Infant Nutrition Comprehensive ReportThe session was presented by Mr. Heiko Schipper, Head of Infant Nutrition at Nestle under the theme Nestle Nutrition Journey. He started out by explaining the concept of the first 1,000 days of life for a newborn. It is important to understand what takes place in terms of the anatomical and physiological changes and we are better able to respond and know what product to supplement infants with. In 1866, the founding father of Nestle combined science and consumer understanding to create the first product, which was a milk cereal. He did this because of the frequent occurrence of infant mortality. To clarify that, infant mortality is the death of a child less than one year of age. Also, there is childhood mortality which is the death of a child before the child's fifth birthday. According to the United Nations (UN) organization, and WHO, national statistics tend to group these two mortality rates together. Globally, ten million infants and children die each year before their fifth birthd |

Neoliberalism and MisconceptionsWhen looking at Neo-liberalism, one must understand that it is a political theory that has become predominant only through out the last thirty years or so. Although the term its self is not used often, one can clearly see the effects of Neo-liberalism in a country like the U.S for example. Neoliberalism can be perceived as an updated version of economic liberalism where it is believed that the success and organization of the economy should be at the hands of individuals and not by collective institutions or organizations like the government. Although not the case with "Neo "-liberalism, liberalism has been known to allude to religious, economic or even political ideologies. In the U.S. political liberalism has been a strategy to prevent social conflict. It is presented to poor and working people as progressive compared to conservative or Rightwing. Economic liberalism on the other hand differs. Politicians, who claim to dislike liberals in terms of the political type, do not have any p |

Women in The Great GatsbyDuring the 1920's the view on women began to change. Before, men were thought to be more superior to women. However in F.Scott Fitzgerald's, The Great Gatsby the three main characters, Daisy, Jordan, and Myrtle, are modern women. Although modern, they are portrayed as dishonest and unflattering. In The Great Gatsby Daisy Buchanan is portrayed as shallow, ditzy, and foolish. Daisy cares about her appearance and wealth more than anything. She married Tom Buchanan for his wealth and his rank within the social class. Before she married Tom, she was in love with Gatsby. She promised Gatsby when he got back from war they would get married, but she did otherwise. Tom is having an affair with Myrtle, and Daisy acts clueless to the fact that he is constantly adulterous. The Discipline DifferenceIn society today the word discipline is used in many different ways. It can mean to be trained by a command and warm up exercise or being in a state of order by training and control. People also use discipline to punish or penalize to get trained or correction. Many people link discipline with something negative mostly since the word discipline is often used instead of punishment, but in reality discipline is the only way to go from aspiration to actualization. Discipline is meant to guide someone in the right path. Discipline leads to symmetry and if there is not any then there is chaos. If there were no rules in the world it would be nothing but confusion, if the parents didn't look after the children, children did not listen to their parents, if the laws of the country were not followed, the world would be a chaotic mess. Greek Society and AgonIn Ancient Greek Society there are few things that we can say that classified the entire society. The Greek City-states may have their differences in philosophy, their own take on what gods to pray for, and what form of government to rule by. Greek City states would go to war over these differences but one thing that they all agreed on are that Agon or Competition was a high honor in Greek society. Agon gave the men in Greece to drive to be the best of all of Greece. Through Agon men would be able to fight to obtain time and kleos. Time means that the winner of the fight would have the literally the tangible and physical tokens of Honor and the honor to being the best. Kleos is best know as fame, this fame is the reputation that one makes for himself to be known by. Agon was good for the Greek Society by uniting the City-States; even for a short while but still able to bring them together for small amounts of time. There are two main forms of this unity; one the Olympic games and seco |

Hegelian EthicsWH Walsh wrote the book Hegelian Ethics in 1969 in an attempt to make clear the philosophy and writings of a philosopher that was neglected by other philosophers for more than a generation. Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, was unpopular mostly for his difficult writing style, but also because of the widespread notion that Hegel is the inspiration for the worst forms of totalitarianism. Walsh wrote this book as an attempt to reintroduce Hegel in a way that allows us to gain a better grasp of his difficult writing style. Walshs book also does a lot in the way of clearing up a lot of the misunderstanding behind Hegels view of morality being a social phenomenon rather than the personal one that Kant establishes it as. He also spends a good amount of time discussing the key criticisms that Hegel has of Kant and Walshs views of these critiques. I will be focusing on three of them. Walsh begins his book by explaining that very few students in philosophy in the English-speaking world have an ac |

First Contact with Native AmericansA consequence of the first contact was that many Europeans had brought the disease into the world. "Before 1492 Native Americans had never been exposed to smallpox, measles, malaria, or yellow fever". Europeans lived in close proximity to animals that acted as disease victims and suffered outbreaks more than once. Native Americans didn't have immunity to the diseases because they never had experienced what Europeans were diagnosed as childhood diseases. Native Americans that got smallpox, measles, influenza, chicken pox, and typhoid had high fevers and ended up dying quickly. "In some cases, people who were sick may have otherwise survived if provided with basic care." The First Nations weren't prepared with quality health care during this time and this left the food harvest impossible. When a disruption in harvest happens, it makes matters worse by a lack of food for the remaining tribe members and reduces their immune system's resistance to disease due to the lack of nutrients. Population figures were at the low end of estimates, in 1492 it stated that there were |

The Problem of the Grudge InformerProblem Lon Fuller's The Problem of the Grudge Informer outlines quite a legal dilemma: are the acts of a past regime's grudge informers deserving of prosecution? Fuller narrates a scenario regarding a central issue that is plaguing the administration of a recently overturned democratic state, previously ruled by an unethical regime after a bout of economic disparity. In response to such hardship and social chaos, factional groups formed such as the anarchic "Purple Shirt" party. Through the use of scare tactics and false promises, the Headman of this party was voted into presidency. The General Assembly became thoroughly comprised of Purple Shirt followers, resulting in objectors of their ideologies being put to death. Many citizens of the state took this as an opportunity to report others for frivolous crimes such as simply questioning or speaking ill of the party's policies. This was seemingly done merely out of selfish fulfilling of one's own agenda, such as taking reveng |
