Analysis Paper - Notorious

Part 1: Notorious is a 1946 American made movie, which was directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock. The movie itself is a spy thriller film that's key characters are three people whose lives become entangled during an espionage operation. Alfred Hitchcock is known for his distinctive directorial style, innovative film editing, and pioneering the use of the camera movement mimicking a form of voyeurism. Hitchcock regularly starred Carey Grant and Ingrid Berman in his movies; however, Notorious also starred Claude Rains. Carey Grant, who plays government agent T. R. Devlin (Dev), is considered one of classic Hollywood's leading men due to his accent, debonair demeanor, and over all good looks. Ingrid Bergman plays Alicia Huberman who is the daughter of a convicted Nazi spy, was considered one of Hollywood's greatest leading actresses; and brought exceptional beauty and intelligence to any film. Claude Rains, who plays Alex Sebastian who is a friend of her fathers and leaders of the gro

Binge Eating and American Psychiatric Association

Can you imagine engulfing thousands of calories in one sitting while feeling overwhelmed by not being able to stop? Sadly, this is common amongst Americans. There are many causes and effects for binge eating but there are recovery processes. To begin with, there really is no set definition for binge eating. Matter of fact, researchers were studying this disorder for over ten years before the American Psychiatric Association considered it an illness ("Binge Eating Can Have "). They didn't consider binge eating an illness because they couldn't measure the disorder. However, a study in 2007 showed that this eating disorder is more prevalent than anorexia or bulimia nervosa (Bulik 9). This study is remarkably shocking. Generally, the public hears more about anorexia and bulimia nervosa. The media shines the spotlight on these two disorders through online blogs, magazines, and reality shows. On the other hand, it is commonly known that binge eating is the indulgence of oversized meals to th

Gay Marriage and the Constitution

There is a social unrest in America these days regarding the Government's denial of the right to marry to many homosexual. Those completely against gay marriage, mainly conservatives and neo-Christian politicians who are using religious arguments to establish that sexuality is an atrocity. While on the other side you have liberals who are fighting for the equal treatment of the gay community which is clearly supported by the 10th and 14th amendment in the United States Constitution. While the belief system of the politicians is what they are basing their ideals on, this country was founded on religious freedom where we are allowed to worship as we wish. This was a ground rule that was established in the beginning. The separation of Church and State was established so that there would be a distinction between religion and government so that the church would not influence government and vice versa. The issue of gay marriage distorts those lines and religion intervenes and influences the

The Corruption of Pope Alexander VI

Pope Alexander VI was the most corrupt Pope to have ever lived. His corrupt political policy as Pope was a large precursor to the beginning of the protestant reformation in 1536 and in many ways his corrupt reign also directly influenced the beginning of the Protestant reformation. He was condemned by many for disregarding his priestly vows of celibacy and by placing political goals over his spiritual leadership. Pope Alexander VI also shocked many people during the 1500's by openly announcing the fact that he had several illegitimate children. Pope Alexander was additionally widely acclaimed for his practices of simony, the selling of indulgences, and nepotism. Furthermore, Pope Alexander VI wrote some of the most controversial papal bulls of all time like the Inter Caetera, which was a precursor to the Treaty of Tordesillas. The future Pope Alexander VI, Rodrigo Borgia, was a corrupt individual even before he had become Pope of the Roman Catholic Church. To show some of the most si

Dog's Death by John Updike

As you start reading Dog's Death by John Updike you are immediately placed in to a solemn state as a dog lover. The words that Updike chose to write this poem enhances the tone, because the words draw such vivid images in your mind as you read. The tone changes throughout the poem; from the very starting point of this poem you feel the sense of trouble, turmoil, heartbreak and failure that the injury was unknown. Next you feel some remorse for the puppy as she perished trying to chomp on the hand of the person that feeds her. Then it was the compassion that the family had for the puppy in its last stages of life. "She must have been kicked unseen or brushed by a car " (Updike 1). Updike begins the poem by rapidly stating how the family was uninformed that their puppy had been injured and how the injuries had been sustained. It first makes you think that the family is not a very good caretaker for the dog. He then makes you take that statement back with the next couple of lines when h

Motivation, Strength and Weakness

This SOS Science of Survival class was more than just a class in my opinion, it was great experience. This class did not only teach me certain things but gave me a chance to explore and experience things I would have never had the chance to do before. It also gave me the chance to acknowledge my strengths and weaknesses with the help of others and the instructor. I believe that life is a learning experience and being able to recognize my own strengths and weaknesses can help me become better individuals. The strength and weakness that were shown to me during this class are being a good team player and the lack of motivation that I posses. Throughout this course my strength was revealed mostly before and during the three day trip. Everyone in my group had their own responsibility that each person in the group depended on. We were all co-operative and experienced no problems. Being a good team player helped me multiple times through ou

Monetary Policy - The Federal Reserve

Monetary policy is what the Federal Reserve uses to influence the amount of money and credit in the United States economy. The goal of monetary policy is to promote a stable economy by promoting maximum employment, moderating long-term interest rates and stabilizing prices. There are three instruments of monetary policy that the Federal Reserve uses; open market operations, the discount and federal funds rates and the reserve requirements. I am going to define each of these instruments and explain how the Federal Reserve uses each of them to control the supply of money. The first tool the Federal Reserve uses is open market operations (OMO) to influence the supply of bank reserves. OMO's are when the Federal Reserve decides to buy or sell government bonds on the open market so that it can increase or decrease the amount of money and interest rates in the banking system. OMO's are effective at controlling the supply of money when it comes to short-term rates and inflation. In order to c

The Consequences of Bullying

Bullying has always been an issue since the first start of society. The little and the weak have always been tormented, put down, and belittled by the bigger and the stronger. Bullying is a serious matter, it can be seen as simply a joke at first, but when taken too far, it can put lives at stake. Bullying is not only physical, but mental. Verbal attacks from others can be just as painful to a victim as a hard punch. In this day and age, verbal bullying has also grown. With the impact of technology and social media on todays world, cyberbullying has now become a very serious issue. The sad part of this all is that when thinking of bullying, it is common to think of it in elementary, middle school, and high school. But in fact, it still takes place in todays colleges and the work field. No matter how early it started, it can always have an impact later on in someones life. Bullying is a nationwide issue that needs to be reduced in our society, the fact that it can continue into College

My Imprisonment

Its been a month since I was released from a five month long illegal detention. But the element that still bothers me the most is that none of the men who imprisoned me have a speck of guilt or shame for their wrongdoing. On 18th June 2014, I returned to my home town Tehran after acquiring a 4 year long law degree from the University of London. I preferred staying in Iran and taking care of my old parents rather than returning to London. I settled in comfortably as the volleyball spirit in the country reached its peak. 20th June was a big day for Iran and a sensational enthusiasm was spread across the country. Streaks of patriotism within me led me to watch the 2nd match of the world volleyball league. Nuzhat and Ayesha, my two friends accompanied me to the stadium. All we wanted was to sit on those chairs to scream and cheer for our national team. But fate had something else in store for us. As we entered the stadium gate, a police attendant on duty grabbed my wrist and dragged me to

The Effects of Salt on Plant Growth

The purpose of this experiment is to examine the effects of salt on seed germination, plant growth, and flower production. Salt is used all across the US for deicing roads during the winter which can be transported to roadside vegetation. Salinity is known to reduce the growth of glycophytes (salt-sensitive species). This reduction in growth may result from salt effects on dry matter allocation, ion relations, water status, physiological processes, biochemical reactions or a combination of such factors (Seemann 1985). The rate of photosynthetic CO2 fixation of glycophytes typically declines with salt stress, and this decline is generally found to be at least partially a consequence of stomatal closure, although the extent to which such closure limits photosynthesis during salt stress (by reducing the intercellular CO2 concentration) has been less often quantitatively determine (Seemann 1985).  The ions that contribute to soil salinity include Cl, SO4, HCO3, Na, Ca, Mg, and rarely, NO3 or K. The salts of these ions occur in highly variable concentratio

Tattoos - Expressions in Ink

People express themselves in many ways. Art is a huge movement of expression. As much as art is in your drawings, paintings and photos, it is in what you wear, how u act, and food you cook. The art of tattooing has expanded, and tattoos aren't just ink in a person's skin like they used to be. In today's society, teenagers idolize famous people. Athletes are the heroes of this generation. Young people want to be like their heroes, so when the art is displayed, the children begin to think that's what cool is. Acceptance is becoming the normality. A tattoo is defined, in the Merriam Webster Dictionary, as a permanent mark or design made on the body by pigment introduced through ruptures in the skin. Reading that, a tattoo does not sound like something I would like to have. I would have to be crazy to want someone to rupture my skin, but plenty of people were just crazy enough to start a new fad. A person that had tattoos used to be able to be categorized. Someone could look at a person a

The Abercrombie & Fitch Company

The concept of Abercrombie & Fitch is to provide the target market, which are males and females between the ages of 14 and 20 years old, clothing that allows them to be comfortable and casual while still looking stylish and trendy and maintaining a sense of a luxurious lifestyle. By just purchasing the items the consumers are embodying the Abercrombie & Fitch motto of "casual luxury". Abercrombie & Fitch market their clothes and items by plastering black and white photos of very fit, attractive, and young models on signs and billboards. They also market their clothing by making statements that make their current customers more concrete. The target market age starts at 14 because it is around that age that a teenager begins dressing themselves and shopping for themselves, so naturally they would want to dress like other kids in school, or their older siblings or relatives. They want to dress as trendy and "cool" as everyone else. That desire later turns into a real love for the brand w

Rousseau and an Alternative to Democracy

Representative democracy is the most common model of government in all developed countries. It is not possible to talk about "representation " in democracy without having introduced the concept of liberal democracy. John Locke and Thomas Hobbes can be considered the fathers of the liberal doctrine. Since Hobbes "marks an interesting point of transition between a commitment to absolutism and the struggle of liberalism against tyranny " (Held: 2006, p. 59), it is more useful to look at Locke's philosophy, as it is the basis of the liberal tradition which is still present in the contemporary age (Held:2006, p.59). In the "Two treatises of government " Locke show a principle still valid in the contemporary society: people delegates their sovereignty as long as the government guarantees freedom and fundamental rights. Although the liberal principle is now adopted in almost every country, it should not be considered the only possible solution to govern. Contrarily, in fact, Jean-Jacques Rou

The Nuclear Reactor Theory

As of today there are 102 light water reactors working with the United States, of these there are two different types. There are boiling water reactors (BWR) and pressurized water reactors (PWR), an example of each may be found right here in south Louisiana. River Bend generating station located outside of Baton Rouge in St. Francisville is a BWR, and Waterford 3 generating station is a PWR located outside of New Orleans in Killona. As an interesting side note, due to the changes in homeland security following the terrorist attacks of 9/11 it is now illegal for these power stations to feature nuclear within their names. So why should the mass populist care about nuclear power generation and why do we even need it? Well, to start with it must be understood that the only other way the United States produces large scale power for the country is buy burning coal or natural gas both of which are fossil fuels. The heat from burning these fuel is then used to boil water to generate steam. The

Teenage Pregnancy in America

Do you know how many teenage pregnancies there are each year in USA alone? According to Office of Adolescent Health, there were 26.6 births for every 1,000 adolescent female's ages 15-19 back in 2013. That means teenage pregnancies are over 100,000 each year in USA a lone. But nowadays, the rate has declined compared with the year of 2013 and back in 1991. Teenage pregnancy is one of the major problems in this country. Even though the teenage pregnancy's rate has declined, the rate is still at the alarming point which means it's still high and it should be reduced. So today, I'm focusing more on teenage pregnancies. I believe that all high schools in this country should provide students the sex education and it should be mandatory for all students to take the class. Not only have the high schools that should provide sex education to the students, but also other places such as the communities that should provide information of safe sex to young kids. For my topic, I have my three main p

My Cultural History

In this paper, I will be describing the time in my childhood as a seven year old. This was an interesting time time in my life as I had to go through some changes. Two days after I turned seven, the tragic events of 9/11 happened. It was the first time in my that I can remember being truly scared. I never even knew what a terrorist or anything like that was until then.when I heard that all the bridges were being closed, I thought It was because the terrorist we're attacking on ground. I was really worried that there were a bunch of terrorist with guns and tanks would go around killing people. I was especially worried for my dad because he worked in queens and had to walk home. I also had an uncle who worked downtown so I was worried for him too. This day really taught me that life isn't all fun and games. I began to see the world in a bigger picture. As a child, I wasn't in good shape physically and I was very overweight. I already weighed at over one hundred pounds and I only stood

The Importance of Setting in Beowulf

In literature, the setting can be used to identify the time, place, and mood of the story. It can provide background and dimension when executed properly. The setting basically knocks out the when and where of the plot. In most cases the setting can give the reader an opportunity to visualize the scene in his or her head. The setting is a great opportunity for the writer or storyteller to enhance his or her work with an elaborate and fascinating time and place. In Beowulf, the setting is important because it provides background, dimension, and develops as the story continues. The very first line in Heaney's translation of Beowulf talks about the "Spear-Danes " (1). The story then begins to describe the great kings of Denmark and the great King Hroth

Concepts of Cause and Effect

In the shallows Carr talks about how internet places our focus off the important things in society today. I believe in this quote that Carr said because I feel like the internet distracts us from the real world. It distracts us from getting our whole learning experience it gives us easy answers and we don't have to study therefore we don't learn anything . I myself can relate to what Carr is saying I agree with his saying "the internet is messing up our minds " today. When I read books I read them how I would read an article on the internet. I usually just skim through books I read and try to find the main points of my reading without doing so much reading out of the book. I have been doing this for years because I am always so ready to get my information from the internet source. This happens to many people this is why Carr mentioned "the internet is messing up our minds " because people would rather not sit and take time to read a whole book to get answers. People usually want to

The Eastern Orthodox Religion

Every Sunday Catholics around the world, whatever their differences in nationality, race, social status and gender, stand together to profess a common witness to the apostolic faith of the Church, the Nicene Creed. With one voice they proclaim: "We believe in one God the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. " How easy and straightforward that seems, yet within the Western theological tradition of the trinity, which lies at the heart of Catholic theology, this apparently simple statement is lacking clarity of which most Christians are completely unaware. Some of the lack of clarity is shown through a comparison with the Credo of the People of God written by Pope Paul VI, which begins with: "We believe in only one God, Father, Son and Spirit, creator. " The reasons for this change, from naming the Father as creator, to speaking of the one God, Father, Son and Spirit as creator, can be found in a rather big shift in thinking in Western theology. This notion had an experimental

Evolution of Emotions in Metamorphoses

Regarding the cosmology in Publius Ovidius Naso's Metamorphoses, transformations occur with a combination of scientific and mythological elements. In book 1, the first line "I want to speak about bodies changed into new forms " (Ovid). The creation of not only the Earth but the Universe through Ovid's eyes is orchestrated so well, the reader can see it clearly as it is read. Ovid takes readers on a journey though various emotions that everyone experiences in life. Throughout these various transformations the only thing that remains constant is change. After the chaos and conflict, Ovid begins to paint the very separation of what we call today space and Earth. Though this the sky, sea, land and heavens were created. This is the beginning of the change. The change from what was only inert matter to the beginning of the Earth, an actual matter which can eventually provide sustainability for humans. Ovid references a God as the creator, certainly, the Holy Bible references th

Ethical Theories of the Death Penalty

It is clear in our society that violent crimes, such as murder, should carry some sort of stiffer punishment than that of other, lesser crimes. What is not clear is what that punishment should be. One punishment that is a constant source of debate is the death penalty. In this paper, I will examine whether the death penalty is or is not ethical. Both sides of the issue will be explained, through examination of various aspects of it, which include religious and financial considerations, whether the death penalty is a deterrent or not, and whether or not it can be regarded as justice. I submit that the death penalty is an ethical and equitable punishment for murderers, and should be used throughout our country. The seemingly greatest amount of debate comes from a religious standpoint. Depending on whose interpretation one hears, the Bible is for or against capital punishment. Verses from The Bible are used by both sides of the argument to support their own beliefs. The United St

The Republic and Socrates

Socrates' views on political wisdom, courage, moderation, and justice are all intertwined with his view of a "perfect city, " and throughout the book using this city (and its inhabitance) of what he believes these values should be the quintessence of. He also goes on to explain his views on the just individual which he grapples with many people throughout the duration of the text. Here we see Socrates' real ideal and philosophical beliefs coming to the forefront in the way he refutes others ideas, and how he frames his own Utopian society. In terms of political wisdom as an ideology Socrates easily explains it with the roles of the guardians in his city. (Book II, 368d- end Book III, 412c-end) Here he makes his views known that wisdom is not just something that you are born with, but comes through experience. We see this in the manner of rigorous training and balancing of learning that the guardians have to engage themselves in just to be considered wise. This brings out a particular issue with Socrates' view of wisdom, it is not just the acquisition of knowledge

Rousseau's Argument of Natural vs. Societal Life

Haley Yow November 15, 2013 In his second discourses, Rousseau assesses the differences between natural life and life in society. The natural life, he explains, can be defined as a lifestyle unaffected by responsibilities, duties, morals, and even social norms. Conversely, he depicts life in society as being bound by specific issues, as well as many additional factors. Adapting to these factors allows the modern man to have an advantage in society, while not adapting to these factors would result in social suicide. Rousseau comes to the conclusion that in the state of nature, humanity is happier because the natural life is not overcome by social inequalities, and doesn't consist of moral relationships or responsibilities to anyone. I n this essay, I will present and examine Rousseau's argument about natural vs. societal life, followed by my counter argument to his claims. Rousseau begins with an analysis on human life in nature. He believes that the behavior of a "n

Income Distribution in America

For centuries people have come across the U.S. borders from foreign countries hoping for a better life, a life that is free from unruly dictators and poverty for them and their families. They want to live in the land of opportunities. As Thomas Jefferson once declared, "All men are created equal " (___). John Adams added that "all men are born with equal powers and faculties, to equal influence in society, to equal property and advantages through life " (The New American, 2013).These words were expressed by one of the creators of the society, which was supposed to become one of the most democratic and freest countries in the world. But has it really become like this? Is America really a country of equal opportunity for everyone? Every person that comes to the United States has this idea of "American Dream " which means that everyone will have an equal opportunity to find a job and succeed. Most people hope to find some way to make a living that they enjoy, something that they view as u
