Poem Analysis - The Soldier

The word "England" or "English" occurs six times in this poem. That's a lot for a poem that is only 14 lines! In this poem England is like a mother to the soldier; she gave birth to him, nourished him, made him who he is. But England is also immortal. Even though, in death, the soldier must leave England, it's only for a little while. When he dies, the soldier will go to a heaven that's just like the England he left behind on Earth. Sweet deal! Lines 2-3: The soldier wishes to be remembered for making a foreign piece of land "forever England." This idea of a permanent, immortal England will return again soon.  Line 5: The speaker compares himself to dust that "England bore." Dust here is a metaphor for the speaker's relationship to the natural world and for the fact that he may soon be a corpse. Of course, England can't really bear children so this is an example of personification, the attribution of human qualities to non-human things. Line 7: The speaker refers to himself as a "

The Social Partnership

(Boyd, 2002) pointed quoted a point from (The Copenhagen Centre for Partnership Studies,2002) stating that Social Partners and Social Partnership can be defined as: Social Partnership can be defined as a tri or multi-partite arrangement involving employers, trade unions, public authorities (the state and/or local/regional authorities) and/or others (e.g. voluntary sector). Social partnership is usually concerned with areas of economic and social policy and might be based on a binding agreement or declaration of intent. (The Copenhagen Centre for Partnership Studies, 2002). Social Partners is the term used to designate the representative organisations of trade unions and employers. Quoted from (Boyd, 2002) he cites (Hyman 2001) stating that the term social partnership originated in the German language, first characterising the collective actors in industrial relations as Sozialpartner and then specifying a broader concept of Sozialpartnerschaft . It then goes onto say that the first

What I Learned in English Class

I learned many things in this class; yes we honed our skills in MLA format writing, but most of all I learned how to think deeper and how to think critically. I have learned to not take things at face value, to do my own research and even though I am not yet able to do it I am trying to not let my own opinions taint what reality actually is. I also took some life lessons from the book "Walden" by Henry David Thoreau. These might not seem school related at first but these things help your study habits, your everyday day life and your happiness. Thinking critically is one of the best things you can do. It would be like thinking what you want to have for dinner and you say corn dogs, but then you start critically thinking about what you want to have for dinner and you think about the consequences of said corn dogs and what it's going to do to y

Science lab - Formula of a Hydrate

Purpose This lab was done to determine the percentage of water in a hydrate, which was CuSO4 H20. Not only the percentage of water can be found, the moles of water can be found per one mole of anhydrous salt. An anhydrous salt is a hydrate that lost its water. Using various lab equipment such as burners, crucible, and balance, and techniques such as the mass-to-mole ratio and mass to percentage, the percentage of water in a hydrate was determined. Salts appear to be dry, yet when heated, surprisingly large quantities of water are driven off, because water is loosely bonded to the hydrate. Procedure 1. Set the necessary lab equipment properly. 2. Weigh dry and clean crucible and its cover on the balance. Record. 3. Measure about 1 to 2 grams of the hydrate and record the weight using the weighing boat. 4. In moderate flame, heat the empty crucible with tilted lid for 3 to 5 minutes. Record what happens during the heating process. After recording, wait for crucible and lid to cool, an

Destiny in Oedipus Rex

The famous tragedy, "Oedipus Rex," by Sophocles, presents two morals that the reader may perceive while going through the play. There are two central themes that build tension between how a man or woman may view about the way of life: the individual's actions and fat. The first is that humans are born with a set of fates that are predetermined at birth and is unchangeable. No matter what one does to change; his or her destiny, either good or bad, will always be true. The second is that our fate is determined by our actions and is able to be changed if the correct choices are made. One has the master control to make his or her life dream become reality. In the story of Oedipus Rex, the choices he made were because of fate. In this play, many situations occur where it may seem that Oedipus's life was already predetermined at birth. For example, Teiresias says, "Well, it will come what will, though I be mute." Oedipus replies, "Since c

Antoinette in Wide Saragasso Sea

In the novel Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys, Antoinette struggles to find her true identity. This becomes challenging for her because she cannot escape the local populations tendency to judge others based on concepts such as race, physiological states, and family or social statuses. When talking to Mr. Rochester, Antoinette says that the local Jamaican population constantly called her, a white cockroach. That's me. And I've heard English women call us white niggers. So between you and I often wonder who I am and where is my country and where do I belong and why was I ever born at all (61). Antoinette is often the target of discrimination in Spanish Town, Jamaica. Since Antoinette and her family had been a target of hatred as a family who had previously owned slaves, she never believed that she is a part of any family. Antoinettes biological family is dysfunctional and she is shunned when she asks about her half siblings who are black and whose father is the same as Antoinettes biologi

Religion - Theological Reflection

This fall, I had many opportunities to help out the community. Every year, a few classmates and myself go to the church to see who needs help. This year, I was helping an old man move into his new house and raking his yard. First, we started to move all of his stuff into his new house. Right away, there was someone complaining that his stuff was too heavy, and my classmates didn't want to carry that certain piece of furniture. We made it through and took a break. The old man got us donuts. After our break, we started to rake his yard. But his yard wasn't small at all. I would say there were about two acres that we had to rake. As you would figure there was more complaining. I had an idea, I ran back to my house and got the backpack blower (an engine driven device used to propel fallen leaves and other debris for r

Goals and the Motivation Theory

Motivation is a psychological element that has the potential to lead into a process which enables an individual to act towards a certain goal. There are many motivational theories that have been developed over time in purpose of analysing psychological foundations of motivation. The psychological theories of motivation are used in numerous pathways, one of which that involve development of organisations. Two theories of motivation will be analysed and applied to a pre-existing organisation in order to achieve enhanced work performance. These theories include; the self-determination theory, and the goal setting theory. A two week reflective journal involving records of periods of high and low motivation will be used to analyse the above chosen theories. The self-determination theories (SDT) was initially developed by Richard Ryan and Edward Deci in hope of analysing motivation and develop strategies to support internal tendencies to understand and encourage effective behaviour. SDT

Dulce Et Decorum Est by Wilfred Owen

Wilfred Owen's 'Dulce Et Decorum Est' explores the themes of truth and lies to tell a shockingly gruesome tale of the harsh reality of war. The poem is set during the first world war, detailing the experiences of the soldiers in the trenches. It is bitterly aimed at those who promote and glorify warfare, sending a horrifyingly graphic message describing the intense suffering of innocent men. Throughout the poem, Owen deploys a range of poetic techniques, such as themes, word choice, and imagery, in order to emphasise the horrific effect of the lies fed to naive soldiers, which eventually led to their suffering, or in many cases, death. The reader is plunged into the horror of warfare from the very beginning of the poem, as Owen describes the soldiers as "bent double, like old beggars under sacks". This simile portrays the men as aging and unhealthy, which is a shocking contrast as soldiers are normally portrayed as young, fit and healthy. This paints a picture of how the war is damagi

Pearl in The Scarlet Letter

Guilt can drive people into rough directions yet guilt can also inspire good intentions and create moral stability that can help someone become the person they would like to be. In Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter," Hester, a young and beautiful woman, has an affair with an unknown man in her town while her husband is away. Her daughter Pearl becomes the most important aspect of her life after she is born and is the only thing that brings her any light or happiness. Although Hester feels immense regret for her actions, she becomes inspired by Pearl to do good and tries to expel her guilt. Pearl acts indirectly as Hesters moral compass, because every time Hester looks at Pearl she sees the potential good in herself. Thus, In the novel The Scarlet Letter, Pearl exists solely as a symbol of Hester's sins, positive traits, and past self, not as a character in her own right. Pearl is compassionate solely to her parents. As they both go through their different struggles, Pearl is

Limits of the Human Brain

We don't think of ourselves as changing. We are the same basic people we've always been. But some of the astonishing changes that the future holds in store for the human body can be a bit surprising. Technology and countless added factors have already contributed to the major loss of memory and intelligence overall. The human brain, being a machine striving for maximum efficiency, typically remembers where information is stored, rather than the information itself. This and many other contributions to brain development are having lasting effects on society itself. To add to those contributions, when comparing the writing styles from Shakespeare's time to current day, the art and imagination not only shows the limitedness of today's minds but how the creation is lost. In contrast, there are many who say that the human brain always has room to grow and expand, and does not have limited access because of their amazing ability to create and destroy emotions without restrictions. Human brai

Advertising Analysis

Advertisements are pictures, videos, animations or anything that contains information and describes a product or service. Advertisements can be of very different styles and every advertisement has its own message. This essay will take on and talk about the persuasive techniques, the message, the purpose, audience and the power of language of the two given advertisements. In the first advertisement, the worldwide known manufacturer, "Nike" uses a leopard for its speed. In that way, Nike is comparing its produced shoes to the leopard because, as it is apparent in the ad, Nike shoes allow its user to run faster. That brings us to the message. Nike is trying to tell its audience that in order to achieve a high speed, Nike shoes are needed besides all the usual training. The purpose behind the advertisement

A Kestrel For A Knave by Barry Hines

"A Kestrel For A Knave" is a book written by Barry Hines in 1968. I think that in this book, sometimes, Barry Hines wants to show us that Billy is a victim. I will talk about this subject in three parts: In my first point, I will explain how, in the context of the story, the author shows us that Billy is a victim, in my second point, I will explain how, by his language, the author demonstrates that Billy is a victim, and in my third and last point, how Barry Hines shows us that Billy can be someone else than a victim. Firstly, in the context of the story, the author wants to show us that Billy is a victim. During the story Barry Hines demonstrates that point through different themes: the family, the education and the social class (poverty). The Family Billy's family is clearly not a true family (with love and so on). The opening scene of the novel reveals a family characterised by small cruelties, bad organisation, indifference between the different family members and a complete la

My Personal Academic Strategies

The Academic Strategies course has provided me with numerous resources and strategies to effectively manage the obstacles and challenges that I will face as a student and a professional. Many things have changed in the academic arena since I was a student almost 30 years ago. Along with the obvious technological advancements, more in now know about the impact of organization and stress on productivity and success. Additionally, effective study, writing, reading, and test-taking methodologies have been developed, researched, and implemented. Without this course, I would have approached my academic career using the old tools, resources, and strategies that have now been proven to be less effective. I now have a toolbox of critical organizational, reading, and writing resources and will be able to effectively implement the skills I have developed. I have clear and concise long term and short term goals that will drive me to achieve what I set out to accomplish. I have a solid study plan a

Heath Review - The Unhealthy Oreo

The Oreo cookie was first created on March 16th, 1912, under the National Biscuit Company, now known as Nabisco. From that point forward, in excess of 362 billion Oreos have been purchased. New Jersey inhabitant, Thusen, was the first to buy the treats, offering them in mass for 30 pennies a pound. Since its modest beginning, the Oreo has seen many varieties – products of the soil or green tea-enhanced filling in China, a brief lemon-filled mixture in the U.s, and later mint – seasoned filling. Oreo is a sandwich treat comprising of two chocolate wafers a cream filling in the middle. Oreo has always been a moneymaking racket that has been masking the bad health effects and leveraging innocent teens into consuming the cookies. In the early 1190s, wellbeing concerns provoked Nabisco to substitute vegetable oil in place of the lard in the filling. Even though Oreo's can entice teenagers with their tempting advertisements, people should stop consuming them because of the Bad

Various Stages of Human Development

Developmental Theories Freud is known for his creation of psychotherapy, which is still used today, another strength of the psychoanalytic view is the importance on contained development during adult ages found in Erikson's theory. Freud's new research on adult development has provided a great deal of new theorizing, even though many of Freud's theories are disputed. Freud's studies have impacted our understanding of personality development. At each level lust is centered on a different part of the body, in the infant; the month is the main focus. As the child's growth progress the lust becomes focused, on the anus than later on the genitals. After a period of inactivity called the latency stage, optimum development, according to Freud requires an environment that will satisfy the unique needs of each period. For example: the infant needs sufficient opportunity for oral stimulation, an inadequate early environment will result in fixation. Characterized by behaviors that reflect unreso

Coils, Springs and Shock Absorbers

Introduction Shock absorbers ensure good road-holding and a comfortable ride by slowing the movement of the springs. A good shock absorber is one that is hard enough to prevent the wheel from leaving the ground and supple enough to ensure that the bodywork is not subjected to the force of the various bumps in the road. Shock absorbers and coil springs are such a natural fit as they work together to maintain wheel contact with the road and protect the vehicle body and its occupants from road irregularities, such as speed bumps and uneven road. Need of a good spring is inevitable for a good shock absorber. Spring is a device that changes its shape in response to an external force, returning to its original shape when the force is removed. The energy expanded in deforming the spring is stored in it and can be recovered when the spring returns to its original shape. Generally, the amount of the shape change is directly related to the amount of force exerted according to Hook's law; F=kx, w

The Women Behind the Seneca Falls Convention

Women earned their rights through a movement that was started at the Seneca Falls convention. This convention was led by Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton and many other women who lived their lives to make sure those women always had their rights. According to history.com (n.d) "Lucretia Mott (1793-1880) was one of the leading voices of the abolitionist and feminist movements of her time" (para.1). Lucretia Mott was born in Nantucket, MA in 1793. In 1811 Mott moved to Philadelphia where she married her husband James Mott who was in the wool trade and cotton industries, but eventually became primarily focused on wool trading to protest the cotton industry in the south because this industry was slavery dependent. Around the year of 1818 Lucretia became a minister of Society of Friends which was in Philadelphia. Lucretia followed the Quaker beliefs which then allowed women a chance to take a position in the public that would include a different array of social issue

Pros and Cons of Late 19th Century Industrialization

Question Was Industrialisation in the latter part of the 19th Century Good or Bad? Response Russia was one of the last powers to industrialise, despite being the largest country in the world. The 8 million square mile nation and freezing climate made it extremely difficult to connect people from the East to the West. Russia's industry was mainly located in the West of the country. Minister of Transport (1892), Sergi Witte constructed the project of the Trans-Siberian Railway, stretching from Moscow to Vladivostak – 3750 miles. This hoped to encourage the migration of workers in the newly industrialised nation. The industrialisation meant that there was a colossal number of new jobs for the people. 82% of the Russian population were peasants; the indust

Romactism in Literature - Maria

Romanticism was a movement of art and literature with origins in Europe during the eighteenth century and became popular in Latin America at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Romanticism is separated from the formality and the order of the artistic movements of the past and embraces the lack of order. It became a very vital genre in Latin America to define and understand the identity latin america through literature. The major theme of the genre was like to explain and understand the movement toward a new national identity. One of the great works of this literary movement is Maria de Jorge Isaacs. Maria encompasses many archetypal literary movement of Romanticism. This work is very important for Latin American romanticism for four main reasons: the nature of the sentimental novel, the portrait of Maria and Angel Home, romantic love and representation of American space. The novel is classified as a sentimental novel, which was a large part of romanticism. The main theme in the p

The Impact of Third Parties

Question What is the impact of third parties? Response The impact of third parties is stronger than one may think; or should I say, more than I thought. For a few hundred years now in the United States, a two party system dominates the government. It started before the Constitution was ratified around the year 1787. The Federalist Party was formed and is a similar representation of the Democrats today. They formed to promote the ratification of the Constitution and believed in a stronger national government that would encourage the development of commerce and manufacturing. The Anti-Federalists argued against ratification. They supported states' rights and feared a too-powerful central government. (Sidlow and Henschen, pp.144) These two parties overtime are now what we know as the Democrats and the Republicans. They have dominated national politics and become firmly embedded in the United States. Some say it is the result of the first major political divisions of the Federalists and

The Mongols Motorcycle Club

Intro One morning in late February 1998, Carly Hudson, Erika Allison and Daniel Booher were contacted by Special Agent John Ciccone of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) of the Los Angeles division Group II. With us was Special Agent William Queen. Ciccone knew that Queen had been hanging around the Hell's Angels gathering intelligence for another case agent so our team was the closest and obvious choice for this very important mission. The mission was to go undercover and infiltrate the most dangerous outlaw motorcycle gang around. They are so violent and crazy that they make the Hell's Angels look like pansies. We were informed that there are reports of surging criminal activity amongst the Mongol's across the United States. The investigation was a priority due to the Mongol's penchant for assaults, gunfights, drug trafficking, and cold blooded murder crossing over to the civilian world. So we began the preparations for what we did not know at this time,
