Facing It by Yusef Komunyakaa

Yusef Komunyakaa published his works during an era that is characterized by different events. Events of constant change and fast progression, instability of identity and culture, globalization, postcolonialism, and use of virtual reality are eminent during this period. Major occurrences during this era are Civil Rights Movement in 1954, Vietnam War in 1955, and the Watergate Scandal in the 1970s. Post-Modernism is most evident as the literary period during Komunyakaa's works. In Susan Farrell's "Vonnegut and Postmodernism", Farrell explains the postmodernism period as an era that is characterized by de-canonization; blur lines between high and low art., irony, indeterminacy, and metafictional; self-reflexivity. W.E.B. Du Bois "The Souls of Black Folk", and Claude McKay's "If We Must Die" are works noted during Komunyakaa's period. In the poem "Facing It" by American author Yusef Komunyakaa, the author uses metaphor, imagery, and symbolism in ord

Child Counsel in Delinquency Cases

For over a century, states have believed that the juvenile justice system was a vehicle to protect the public by providing a system that responds to children who are maturing into adulthood. States recognize that children who commit crimes are different from adults: as a class, they are less blameworthy, and they have a greater capacity for change. To respond to these differences, states have established a separate court system for juveniles, and they have created a separate, youth-based service delivery system that is different than that provided to adults. Under Section 13, Article II of the 1987 Constitution provides that the State recognizes the vital role of the youth in nation-building and thus, shall promote and protect their physical, moral, spiritual, intellectual and social well-being. Pursuant to the above constitutional provision, the State has responsibility to provide the youth with care, support and understanding especially during times when he/she experiences confusions

Stigmas of the Russian Revolution

In the late 19th century, Russia was plagued by an immense amount of problems linking economic, political, and social stigmas. The evidence supporting economic problems as the primary cause of the 1881 dilemma is deeply rooted within a mixture of geographical and monetary problems, such as the high percentage of infertile land available for usage in agriculture or the stagnation of the economy due to the prevalence of subsistence farmers. This is in turn counteracted by the prevalence of political problems which introduces the context of the nation as a primarily autocratic society with an extensive hierarchy system as the primary social system, leading to social stigma and discrimination between the levels of society. Last but not least, social problems were heavily rooted as one of the causes of the 1881 dilemma with the entire concept of "serfs" as the primary form of regulation within the country. While there is evidence supporting economic problems being the foremost ca

Anglo-Saxonism and Christianity in The Seafarer

To better understand the famous Anglo-Saxon elegy, The Seafarer, you must have knowledge of the time period that it was written. Anglo-Saxon paganism was polytheistic, which means they worshipped many gods. During the 5th century in Great Britain the Anglo Saxons strongly believed in fate and that life is predetermined. This caused them to have a very grim outlook on life. They behaved as if they were waiting for their death, that a higher power was controlling their everyday lives as if they were puppets. A man named Pope Gregory the Great was sent to Great Britain at this time to convert the Saxons to Christianity. Many adopted this religion however most clung on to their original pagan beliefs. This created a community that shared the belief of fate and the power of God in Christianity. For example in the Seafarer it states, "But there isn't a man on earth so proud, so born to greatness, so

Plato and the Existence of the Soul

Much of Plato's beliefs on the soul can be found in his dialogues, "The Republic" and "Phaedo," where he describes that he is a dualist; this means that he believed that the soul and the body were two completely separate entities that worked in conjunction with each other to create what we would deem to be a reasonable human being. Plato aims to be able to prove this to everyone through rational logical arguments; most of these are established in "Phaedo." Plato's first argument is the argument from opposites, whereby he states that every single thing in this world has an opposite, whether that be happy and sad or dark and light, he strongly believes that everything that is a physical event must have an opposite, for example, big things would not be "bigger" if there was no small things to be "smaller." He then goes on to say that there is no opposite to life, as death is not an even within itself, therefore there must be a continuous pattern of life, death and rebirth. However, Plato

Research Project - Snowboards

When many people think of a research project, they think of writing about a person or a certain item. In some of my past research projects I did the same thing. I would say for this project I am doing more of a research and developing project. For the project I am looking up how to make a snowboard and then putting one together with the data I find off the Internet and reliable sources like Kindred snowboards and Burton snowboards. The reason I have chosen this idea is due to I wanted to buy a custom made one. But then my English teacher, Mrs.Henning, gave me a idea of just making my own. I liked that idea, so I asked my mother if she would give me the funding for it, and she said yes. I snowboard during the winter season. I find it very exciting when I just ride the snow like a big wave and I can stick my hand out in front of myself and just touch the powder as I go "flying" by. I started snowboarding when I was seven years old. I learned how to snowboard good when I was about 10 y

Anti-War Themes in Slaughterhouse Five

"Slaughterhouse Five" Kurt Vonnegut Jr. is a novel involving the character Billy Pilgrim. Billy is a WWII veteran, German prisoner of war, and survivor of the bombing of Dresden, who insists that he has become stuck in time. Having witnessed and survived the atrocities of WWII, there is no doubt that Billy Pilgrim left the war traumatized and unstable. Many events and experiences lived by Billy throughout the novel are parallel to Vonnegut's life. The death and destruction of the war cause Billy Pilgrim to become stuck in time, driving him to the edge of sanity. This causes him to time-travel throughout the events in his own life. In fact, "Slaughterhouse Five" was not published until 23 years after the end of the war; 23 years of desolation and internal angst for Vonnegut. Why in fact did it take 23 years after the war for Vonnegut to publish his novel? The answer to that question lies within the life and experiences of Billy Pilgrim. Billy becomes desensitized towards death, with t

Women in Male-Dominated Sports

Did you ever think that we would have women driving stock cars or even thinking about playing in any male dominated sports? Well look around - it is happening. Sports is considered one of America's favorite past times, but in reality sports have encouraged a separation between males and females in American Society. It is suggested that the attitudes of the athletes in sports are learned on the field and then breached into the world. The gender inequality is said to go far beyond the sports world, but you have male dominated organizations that support the sexes and with the separation of the sexes you can see social and cultural strains on athletes who play in opposite gender sports, because society frowns on women participating in male dominating sports. Danica Patrick was one of the females that came into the racing business and took a lot of criticism from the racing world. Danica got her start on the go-kart circuit when she was ten years old. Danica has competed in the Indy 500. In

Types of Coffee Drinks

The loud beeping of the alarm rudely interrupts a fitful night of sleep. The thought of reaching an arm out from under the warm covers to turn the alarm off, seems like a terrible idea. However, the enticing smell of freshly brewed hazelnut coffee wafting through the air does just the trick of getting me out of my cozy bed, and on to the start of a new day. For as long as I can remember, I have been starting my days off with a cup of Joe. From taking small sips out of my dad's morning coffee, to getting extra shots of espresso for an extra boost of energy in my own cup. After years of drinking various kinds of coffee, I've come to learn that different types of javas have different effects on me. Coffee can be roasted in 50 different ways, not including the fancy flavors you can get at an overpriced coffee shop. However, I am going to focus on three kinds of java that I particularly like; espresso, cappuccino, and cafe latte. Espresso is generally thicker and stronger than coffee brewed by other methods. It has a higher concentration due to the fact that it's made by forcing boiling hot water through the grounds of tightly packed coff

Biomedical Engineering College Statement

Ever since grade school, I knew that I wanted to pursue a field which would be challenging. I wanted my hard work and determination to create something that would benefit others. My mindset was always set towards achieving greater things that no one else could. I first thought of becoming a doctor, an engineer, or a scientist. I wished that I could pursue all three of these fields. Science has always fascinated me. As a child I was always tinkering with machines, trying to figure out how and why these things operate, and what I could do to improve them. One of my earliest memories I have is pulling wires and coils out of one of my dads old radio sets, attempting to determine what exac

Short Story - The Rugrats Theory

For years now, I've played along with the fantasy and I enjoyed it. It was so fun, I began to believe it myself. Angelica was a very convincing girl. Everywhere that girl went, she had a presence about her and it was up to you to determine what type of person she was. I knew her well and I supported everything about her, even her extremely vivid imagination. I always went to play with her against my parents' wishes. I made sure she was the happiest, despite her misguided views. I got in trouble for that, a lot. "Susie! I told you to leave that girl alone," my mom yelled. "But mom! She needs a friend! I can't let her be alone! She needs me!" I yelled back with tears streaming down my face. That's right. I felt needed by her. Angelica was a disturbed little girl. She was schizophrenic and probably had a million other problems. She trusted no one but her doll Cynthia, since everyone in her family had their own troubles. She was alone all the time. She had no one but her babies. The babi

Freedom and the American Revolution

For the wealthy, white men of the American colonies, the American Revolutionary Period was a time in which many aspects of culture, politics, and society were transformed. This group of men supported a separation from England so that they may control their own political and financial affairs. Leaders of business and society participated in a revolution of their government and policies that entailed an overthrow of an existing government and a restructuring of an adolescent government, however very few aspects of this independent system trickled down to the ignored majority of the population. Unlike for their influential male counterparts, womens, poor families, slaves, and Native Americans lives changed very little due to the Revolutionary Period. The era of change began when affluent American merchants were forced to pay taxes on imports and were meant to trade with only the British empire due to British mercantile laws. This hurt their businesses and caused dissent among the wealthie

The Importance of Hard Work

"Fries! I need fries all day! And where's that order of Onion rings?!" "Coming right up!" This was my whole summer, in the hot kitchen of my mother's restaurant, and by the end of it, I would have tested skills like none other. Seeing my family members be the very essence of hard work, I realized it's something that has become a big part of who I am and what I value in life. Growing up in an environment of diligence, I dream to earn my own place in this world and to prove that working hard is going to get me to that point. Starting in June of this year, I began working in a place that would be the most physically and emotionally straining experience I have ever gone through. Now what place could possibly do this to a person one might ask? That's right, a kitchen. Hot pans, stove tops, and friers with 350° oil surrounding me for 16 hours a day, the burns on my arms are the permanent souvenirs I carry from it. Did this turn me away? Not a chance. The top people I worked with in the kitchen showed genuine patience and hard work, my mom being the shi

Hamlet's Devotion to His Father

In Disney's The Lion King, Simba's father was killed by his brother Scar. Simba was crushed by this and had to avenge his father's death to reclaim his position of power. Although this was a children's movie, we can connect similarities between Simba and Hamlet. Hamlet's, father was also killed by his uncle. Through his seven soliloquies we can see he is confused and virtuous. Confusion torments him to making the wrong decision, in seeking his father's death in a appropriate manner. We also see his evolution as a character. Hamlet is tormented by confusion which prevents him from acting upon his beliefs. When Hamlet first spoke with the ghost, he told him that Claudius killed him and he should seek revenge. Hamlet was not sure whether to believe the ghost or not. This leaves Hamlet confused and anxious to find out whether the ghost is telling the truth. In order to test the ghost's testament, he constructs a play called "The Mousetrap" to test Claudius' guilt. When the actors re-enacte

The Legacy of Abraham Lincoln

Our sixteenth president of the United States, Abraham Lincoln, is often regarded as one of the best leaders ever to govern our great nation. Lincoln was born dirt poor in a log cabin in rural Kentucky. His whole family was illiterate, therefore he taught himself how to read and write from household materials such as the bible. Abraham Lincoln's admirable role in freeing the slaves, his painstaking struggle to keep the union from falling apart, and Lincoln's valiant effort as Commander in Chief led to him being an influential person. Abraham Lincoln faced much opposition on the topic regarding the issue of slavery. He had to deal with the southern states, which threatened to secede if the president did anything about slavery. But "Lincoln proved himself a masterful statesman, carefully maneuvering to take advantage of radical pressure to move forward and conservative entreaties to hold back" (Lincoln). When abolition supporters urged Lincoln to free the slaves, he wanted to pr

Provocation of the Mexican War

The Mexican War was the first U.S. armed conflict fought on foreign soil. U.S. president James K. Polk believed the United States had a "manifest destiny" to spread across the continent from East Coast to West Coast. In 1846 until 1848 it had lost its roots in the annexation of Texas and the westward thrust of American settlers. President Polk wanted to secure the boundary dispute over the setting boundary at the Rio Grande and to the sale of northern California. He failed to realize Mexican politicians would not agree to the alienation of any territory, especially Texas. In December of 1845, the United States had annexed Texas, which had been part of Mexico prior to becoming independent. "In 1845 Congress admitted Texas to the Union as a slave state, but Mexico had never formally recognized Texas's independence" (1, 272). This annexation outraged Mexico because they still claimed it as their own. For this reason, Mexico broke off diplomatic relations with the Unit

Edgar Allan Poe - His Life and Work

The writings of Edgar Allan Poe are known for their presence of horror, mystery, and tragedies, but what influenced his original stories and writings have been on the mind of his audience since his death. Over the years rumors have spread, saying maybe he was a little crazy, or his addictions drove him to his wild tales, but how does one write such detailed and elaborate tails when not in the right state of mind? From going over his works and background we can see that Poe had to be in the right state of mind when writing to be able to write so carefully and eloquently. A major theme that can be found in Poe's writings though, is that of tragedy and lost love. Edgar Allan Poe was all too familiar with these subjects as in his own life he went through some very tough times. These experiences are mirrored throughout Edgar Allan Poe's life's work in his repetition of tragedy and morbid tales expressed throughout his literature. Poe was born on January 19, 1809 to David and Elizabeth Poe

Analysis of Rapid Response Research

What is the Rapid Response Team (RRT), how does the RRT operate, and is it effective? The RRT is a team of healthcare professionals consisting of a critical care registered nurse, respiratory therapist, and physician. The importance of their role in the hospital setting is to intervene at the onset of early signs of clinical deterioration. The RRT responds to non-intensive care units to prevent respiratory or cardiac arrest as unexpected clinical deterioration may occur anywhere in the hospital. The focus of this paper is to summarize the study on RRT, explain findings that are used in nursing practice, and to address ethical considerations associated with the conduct of the study. The development of RRT in hospitals is to prevent clinical deterioration in non-intensive care units where unexpected illness, respiratory distress, cardiac arrest, stroke, myocardial infarction and arrhythmias can occur. The significance of having the RRT team available is to prevent further clinical deter

Child Abuse - Physical and Social Consequences

This paper is an analysis of two documents on child abuse and their physical and social effects. The first document focuses on adults who have reported being abused as a child and some of the consequences that come with the abuse, like suffering from a mental disorder in the long run. The second document focuses on children who have been physically abused and their social relationships with other people. This study examines children who have been abused and the way they act around their peers in a classroom setting and how their classmates view them. The first paper, Child Abuse: Physical and Social Effects, is an analysis on how child abuse affects those people who have been abused physically and socially. Any child for any reason can be a victim at any time. Child abuse can be any type of physical or emotional harm. Luisa Sugaya, Deborah S. Hasin, Mark Olfson, Keng-han Lin, Bridget F. Short Story - Autobiography of a Dog

My name is Tony and I am a stray dog. Ever since I was born, I wanted to be one of those pampered pet dogs who roams in vehicles with good looking ladies and eats good food and sleeps beside them and does everything as good as their master, but not every dog gets what he wishes for. I am six years old and for the first two years I thought I was one amongst those pampered friends of mine because at that age, I was cute, silky and small in size and girls and ladies passing by would come and touch me and make sounds like "Aww, such a cute puppy, chhupi, my baby," and then put biscuits in front of me and proceed. I kind of liked their touch and love, but I never thought that when I will grew up things would change so drastically. As I grew up, my mom left me on my own and I technically became an orphan. She never fed me anymore, and I had to arrange my food on my own. Sometimes I had to give some to my mom also, since she was growing old and I had to take care of her too, but I

The Aftereffects of Agent Orange

In a soldier's family, there might be second or third generation birth defects. Spinal bifida is the direct or indirect result of genetics caused by Agent Orange. The Vietnam War began in 1961, and during that time the United States used some chemicals to destroy plants and vegetation, and often Agent Orange was used. Forty years later, that chemical not only destroyed vegetation, but also humans. It continues to affect second, third, even fourth and fifth generations. "I did not know anything about the spraying, but one day - it was 1969 - I delivered for the first time in my life a severely deformed baby. It had no head or arms," reported DR. Nguyen Thi Ngoc Phuong, director of Tu Du Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City (Wilcox. 2011). Everybody knows that Agent Orange caused diseases in soldiers who came back from the Vietnam War, but the exact number of people affected is unknown. Agent Orange is a fifty-fifty combination of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T, two commercial herbicides used widel

Stages of Destruction at Auschwitz

When the genocide of the Holocaust first started, it was due to the Nazi's organization. Nazis rounded up people by what they believed in, their religion, and by age. When victims were brought to Auschwitz they would be sorted by what they were, such as female, male, Jewish, and more. The organization of the Nazi party was put together very well. The Nazi party was able to cover up their tracks, so to speak. Nazis didn't just have the one camp. They had many camps judging on where they would round up Jews. All of the camps weren't as organised as Auschwitz. Although the Nazi party was very organized group of people, they were the most organized at Auschwitz. The Nazis would go into people's houses so the could collect the Jews, they then would move the Jews out of their houses or into their basements so that Christians and people loyal to Hitler could live in better houses. This led to dehumanization. Dehumanization means to take away your label as a human, or to treat them as if they

Speeches of Winston Churchill

Throughout his life, Winston Churchill was haunted by his early experience of piloting propeller planes. These planes could only maintain speed and height, by flying into the wind. From the planes, he took a metaphor for living. The idea to keep flying against resistance, inspired Churchill's will to succeed and kept him from slowing down. To keep British morale high at a time of such pity and darkness, his speeches were made to mobilise the British language and send it into battle. Churchill particularly liked to refer to other famous battles, poets, and leaders in British history, in order to instill a sense of pride in the British people. For example, in the "We Shall Fight on the Beaches" speech, he quotes Lord Alfred Tennyson's Morte Darthur poem; "Every morn brought forth a noble chance, And every chance brought forth a noble knight." Here Churchill compares the British troops to the legendary Knights of the Round Table; the chivalric order. This raises the morale of the British

Evaluation of Andrew Jackson's Presidency

"Greatness, generally speaking, is an unusual quantity of a usual quality grafted upon a common man." - William Allen White Andrew Jackson is seen as one of the most controversial presidents in American history. His quick thinking in situations, sometimes without even consulting Congress, is viewed poorly by his enemies. However, many of his supporters saw Jackson as a representation of the common man because he came from humble circumstances and was not properly educated, unlike all the previous presidents. Due to his ability to overcome early life struggles, his successes in the military and as an adult, Jackson became the defining figure of the common man. Between 1828 and 1837, Andrew Jackson was seen as an exceptional president by his many supporters because he reflected the wishes of the people. He was a people's president through his response to economic issues, his strengthening of the executive branch, and his reaction to political disputes. As the result of economic issues

U.S. Immigration and ISIS

Land of the free, home of the brave. These are the core values on which the United States is built. The United States has made it a mission to welcome people with no regard to race gender or origin with a vision of opportunity. Many people move to the United States with the intentions of creating a better life for themselves as well as their family. The U.S. is one of the few countries that allows you to move in social status/rank. In other words, you're not obligated to be a farmer because your father was one. Unfortunately this benevolence has not completely inspired good will from others. Some people have chosen to take advantage of this somewhat open-door policy by threating harm upon the United States. Lack of restriction is the foundational issue with ISIS, the current immigration policy and creating a new immigrati
