To Kill a Mockingbird - Maycomb Alabama

Imagine living in a small Southern town during the Great Depression with no T.V., no video games and racial tension. This way of life may seem harsh, but the people of Maycomb were able to thrive despite these conditions. To Kill a Mockingbird features the story of a small family living through these times. This novel unlocks the many mysteries and tales of the people of Maycomb. There were few honorable people in Maycomb who were able to keep their faith and stand up for that which they believed in these unjust times. Atticus Finch, father of Scout and Jem, happens to be one of these righteous people. Atticus is a soft-spoken, middle-aged man who wears glasses. He is an extremely intelligent lawyer who was able to support his family with his small income. Many citizens of Maycomb speak highly of Atticus and others desp

Persepolis - Marjane as an Outsider

How would you feel if you were an outsider? Being an outsider can be very difficult at times, especially if you are an outsider in your own society. In the book Persepolis, Marjane demonstrates the theme of being an outsider in many ways. She is different from many of her peers, who may not agree with some of the things she does. Marjane demonstrates throughout the book how she is not afraid of consequences and breaking the law. Also, Marjane believes in equality and that social classes should not exist, which is a very different opinion than most citizens in Iran. Lastly, Marjane is given a lot of freedom and her parents encourage her rebellious behavior. Many of Marjane's actions demonstrate how she could be considered an outsider. One way that Marjane demonstrates the theme of being an outsider is that she is not afraid of consequences. As a young woman growing up in Iran in the 1980s, there were many laws that prohibited citizens from doing many things. While most people followed

Policies of American Education

Every morning, diverse groups of American students – rich and poor, black and white, rural and urban, gay and straight - begin the school day by rising, facing the flag, and pledging allegiance to a country that claims to be indivisible, ensuring liberty and justice for all. Students learn about the core democratic value of equality, which dictates that Americans have the basic right of equal treatment regardless of background, belief, economic status, race, religion, or sex. In addition, they learn about the core democratic value of justice, a fundamental belief that American society offers the same benefits and has the same obligations to all of its citizens. While both of these values teach students that individuals and groups are not favored over other individuals or groups, we need not look further than the very system that champions these tenets of social justice, the American education system, to recognize that disparate inequalities not only exist, but continue to be perp

Little Red Riding Hood by Charles Perrault

Charles Perrault's story of "Little Red Riding Hood" begins when there once lived a village girl that had breath-taking beauty. Her mother adored her but her grandmother idolized her more to the point where she had made her a little red hood. She had loved and cherished that little red hood so much that she was known as "Little Red Riding Hood". One day her mother had baked some cakes and a little pot of butter and told her daughter to carry these items to her ill grandmother, who lived in another village. As she trod through the woods, she came across her neighbor, Wolf. When coming across Little Red Riding Hood, he had the sudden urge to eat her right there and then, but he held back because there were some woodcutters nearby wandering in the woods. The naive little girl then discussed her plans on going to her grandmother's house and bringing the items that she possessed to her sick grandmother with the wolf. Giving the location of her grandmother, the Wolf then disguised a plan to not only eat Little Red Riding Hood, but her grandmother as well. He proceeded this plan by telling her that she should stop to gaze upon the beaut

Power, Justice and Torture

Torture seems to be the most controversial topic among citizens in today's society. Torture can be defined, within the Convention against Torture, as any act by which pain or suffering, whether physical or mental, is intentionally inflicted on a person. According to international law, it is illegal to use torture in any situation of any kind. However, torture still continues throughout the world. As President, I want to make sure it does not continue within the United States. Even though the act of inflicting severe harm on a human being for the benefit of others has been met with varying degrees of success. The United States must continue to be convinced that the practice of torture is evil and ultimately ineffective. Not only may it be ineffective, but it also goes against religious and moral beliefs of many people, including myself. My first reasoning to why I am against torture is because of my religious views. No matter what your religious background is, whether it is Christian,

Creation Stories from Around the World

I. This Norse story of the origin of the earth, sky, and humanity is paraphrased from Snorri Sturluson's Edda, as translated by Anthony Faulkes. Sturluson lived in Iceland from 1179 to 1241, and he apparently composed the Edda as a compilation of traditional stories and verse. Many of verses he included appear to date from the times when Norse sagas were conveyed only in spoken form by Viking bards.       Odin and Ymir In the beginning of time, there was nothing: neither sand, nor sea, nor cool waves. Neither the heaven nor earth existed. Instead, long before the earth was made, Niflheim was made, and in it a spring gave rise to twelve rivers. To the south was Muspell, a region of heat and brightness guarded by Surt, a giant who carried a flaming sword. To the north was frigid Ginnungagap, where the rivers froze and all was ice. Where the sparks and warm winds of Muspell reached the south side of frigid Ginnungagap, the ice thawed and dripped, and from the drips thickened and form

Baseball and Shoeless Joe Jackson

It is the 1919 World Series, and you are in left field of Crosley Field in Cincinnati. The crowd is just over thirty thousand people and everyone is cheering. You say to yourself, "This is crazy," but you get an adrenaline rush from it. "Get your hot dogs here," you hear from the vendor man in the crowd as you take your practice fly balls. You race to catch the ball before it hits the ground and you make it just in time. The crowd cheers, "Shoeless!" The announcer says, "Wow, that glove is the place where triples go to die." As you run into the dugout, the cool mist of the grass seeps through your cleats and the sand clumps up on the spikes as you run through the infield. Once you reach the dugout your coach Kid Gleason yells, "Shoeless, get up to bat." You grab your bat, "Black Betsy" as you call her. You step into the batters box eyeing down Cincinnati's pitcher Dutch Ruether and you know that you own him. "Up to bat Shoeless Joe Jackson," the announcer enthusiastically whoops. "G

The Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki

In the middle of war, the higher ups in the government and military like to think they have the knowledge of all aspects of what is going on in the world of war. This thinking might stand true with today's technology but during the war time of the Bombing of Japan this was not the case. Many military documents surfaced after the bombing showing that we, the United States of America, did not have to go to the extreme in making Japan surrender. Documents showing that we did not give them enough time to surrender with the demands set forth were shown that the United States had surely jumped the gun on doing such devastation to humanity all in the name of justifying the building of such an expensive bombs to the tune of two billion dollars. The United States also felt they needed to "prove" to the world that we are a powerful nation with the means to wipe out troubled nations if it came down to it. This war was the perfect opportunity to do this and have it be "justified&quo

Social Networking - The Pros and Cons

Social media has consumed our society. 47% of American adults used social networking sites in 2014 like Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter; up from 26% in 2008(quoted from procon.org) the aspects of social media both have a positive and negative impact on life. Social networking sites promote interaction with distant family and friends. Social networking sites can demonstrate opportunities to strengthen existing relationships and to develop new friendships as well. The downfalls of social media sites prevent less face to face communication. Also, social media has been known to be more likely to spread false and even potentially dangerous information. Questions come about quite often about social networking sites, and if they are good for our society. As a member of our society social networking can have a positive or negative influence in school, relationships, promoting business, and self-expression. While others may view social media as a negative influence, for me, the issue hinges on h

Developing Effective Communication

Effective communication is an essential component of a respectful relationship in the nursing profession. The styles vary and include, but are not limited to, attentive listening, conveying acceptance, asking related questions, paraphrasing, clarifying, focusing, offering information, maintaining silence, using assertiveness and summarizing (Kebicz, 2004). Along with verbal interaction, non-verbal gestures, and special attention to the interactions with clients that have special needs play a significant role in the effectiveness of the communication between both parties (Kebicz, 2004). I will discuss the verbal and nonverbal interaction between, the staff and residents, the staff to staff, and lastly resident to resident, from a recent care home visit. Upon entering the facility, I had noticed the bright surroundings and hustle bustle of the staff to get the residents to the dining area for supper. Many residents are waiting in the hallway for their medication prior to supper. Here

Solving the Problem of Acid Rain

Acid rain is precipitation that has been turned acidic to a pH value of 4 or lower due to air pollution. Acids can be very harmful to living beings and the environment around us. However, in the case of acid rain, the acid is very dilute. The acids present in acid rain are sulphur dioxides and different oxides of nitrogen (SO2, NOx) (gsu.edu). Acid rain occurs because of the pollution that is caused when fossil fuels are burnt (national geographic). This causes the acids to be released into the atmosphere, only to be fused with the rain (epa.gov). These acids get dissolved extremely easily and can travel long distances with the wind (epa.gov). Fossil fuels like coal are used in most factories across the world. Furthermore, motor vehicles release huge amounts of sulphur dioxide and different oxides of nitrogen too. Acid rain is a major environmental issue because the earth soaks up the acid rain which has permanent issues in the ecological system. Buildings can also suffer minor damage

Legal and Illegal Immigration

Imagine living in a country that is full of legal citizens and illegal citizens. These "illegal citizens" are being paid to do the same job as you, are living in the same neighborhood as you, and are not having to pay taxes because they aren't registered in the country. People don't understand that these illegal immigrants are taking advantage of the United States economy and corrupting the government. They are taking away jobs from US citizens and leaving them on the streets. Over the years, the immigration rate has increased; giving the US a wake-up call telling them to do something about this issue. The US has yet to make a move. Illegal-Immigration Laws are shown, currently, to be ineffective because immigration rates have drastically increased, United States citizens feel threatened by the immigrants, and the immigrants are ruining the United States' economy. The so called "immigration laws" are seen as ineffective because immigration rates have drastically in

On Seeing England for the First Time

In Jamaica Kincaid's essay "On Seeing England for the First Time," Kincaid expresses her viewpoint on England's authority over her homeland, the Caribbean island of Antigua. Kincaid has strong resentment towards England. She sees England as a dictator in her life. Through the use of emotional arguments and social appeal the author, Kincaid, gets the feeling across that she was a victim of England. At an early age she started to realize that the English had taken over her culture. Kincaid conveys her resentment toward England in her essay through tone, anaphora, and figurative language. Tone is a writer's or speaker's attitude toward a subject, character, or audience. In Kincaid's essay "On Seeing England for the First Time," the tone is one of sarcasm. When Kincaid views the map of England presented to the class by the teacher, she makes a sarcastic comment, "at the time I saw this map - seeing England for the first time - I did not say to myself "Ah, so that's what it looks like." Her teacher views the map with awe. Through this statement it is evident of Kincaid's perspective of England. She shows much less enthusiasm bec

Saving the Black Rhino

The very first picture that came to my mind when I heard about the Black Rhino was seeing hundreds of them grouped together drinking water out of lakes peacefully in the parks of Africa. I was excited to learn about their habitats, history, and their population rate. As I explored deeper into the topic I found out that the Black Rhino is critically endangered. South Africa's rhino-poaching toll for 2013 surpassed the 500 mark (Marshall 5). By the end of July 2013 an astonishing 536 rhinos were killed (Marshall 5). Money is the driving force behind the extinction of the black Rhino. On the black market an eight pound horn can be sold up to $360,000. The financial gain outweighs any sort of penalties for poachers. The goal of the heartless poachers is to shoot the Black Rhino with high powered rifles right in the middle of their foreheads. Poachers have no regard for the long term effect of killing animals. After they collapse to their chest, poaching crews strip them of the two horns

Washington Redskins Name Controversy

In recent discussions of the Washington Redskins logo, a controversial issue has been whether or not the logo is offensive to Native Americans. On the one hand, some argue that the logo is tradition and is not meant to be offensive. The Redskins believe its name honors Native Americans, and has for the past sixty seven years. From this perspective, it is difficult to get rid of tradition. On the other hand, others argue that it is out of date and has several methodological flaws. "Redskins fans are livid that the president would jump into this fight. They are hypocrites. They are not the only people who can have an opinion about this matter. United states politicians are sports fans too the football teams glorious history may indeed stretch back eighty wonderful years, but what intelligent person or even a diehard football fan like me, could seriously argue that eighty years of entertaining football history could ever compare to the thousands of years that the original Americans h

The Steinbeck Style - Of Mice and Men

Over centuries authors have started developing new and innovative techniques to create complex and well developed texts. During the history of literature, readers have seen authors that are characterized by a unique style of writing. For instance, William Shakespeare used irony in his most famous plays; Stephanie Meyer uses symbolism in her books; and Edgar Allan Poe uses imagery in his poems. Likewise the novel Of Mice and Men written by John Steinbeck is a work in which the author demonstrates a unique style of writing. The novel develops during the Great Depression and narrates the story of two laborers in California's fields, extremely different but united for a unique reason - the American Dream. Steinbeck uses a unique style of writing by employing techniques such as symbolism, characterization, and imagery. Steinbeck is known for employing a unique technique called symbolism. Steinbeck uses objects often to represent ideas and situations with a specific meaning. To start with,

Short Story - The Medal Mistake

"We are back for the team awards," the announcer spoke. "The third place team award goes to The Flipsters, the second place team award goes to Above and Beyond, and the first place team award, with a whopping score of 221.25 points goes to The Chalk Lovers!" Jasmine ran over to the podium and held up the first place trophy. The rest of the team followed to catch a spot on the podium. Ashley and I ran and got a spot on the floor behind the podium. The team photos were held a few minutes after the awards. Ashley and I were barley in the picture, not that it mattered, but I wish I could have one good team photo I could post on Facebook without being embarrassed about. Half an hour after the meet, my brother, James came to pick me up. "Hey sis how did it go?" he asked. "Well, I got 5th place all round, I actually placed 3rd place on bars and I got 5th on floor," I replied. "That's great! What did that hot Jasmine girl get?" James asked

The Montgomery Bus Boycott

Some say that the Montgomery Bus Boycott started on December 1, 1955, but many of those who were present say it began long before that. The ruling of the case also overturned the 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson "separate but equal " doctrine, not only intended for public schools but to other legal formed originations that pushed segregation including public transportation. Even the 1954 Supreme Court case of Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas also applied to transportation. When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat that afternoon of December 1, 1955, she didn't see the revolution that act of courage would induce on the world as we know. All she intended to do was to go home, but she received this altercation "Are you going to stand up?"" The driver James Blake demanded. Rosa Parks looked straight at him and said: "No." Blake then said: "Well, I'm going to have you arrested." "Rosa Parks replied, "You may do that." "This was all it took for an entire community to fight back and do

The Shape of Identity

Identity, according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is "the qualities, beliefs, etc., that make a particular person or group different from others,"" or "who someone is." However, the identity of every human being is not something we are born with. Identities come from beyond ones self, and are constantly changing due to interactions, experiences, and events in a persons life. Through both "Casa"" by Judith Ortiz Cofer and "The Real World Consequences of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl Cliche'"" by Hugo Schwyzer, we are able to understand how the relationships we form with family and friends influence our way of thinking. Each author uses experiences to help us understand the influences outside forces have on our personal characteristics. Though we may not always be aware of it, the people we surround ourselves with ultimately determine our identity. Our identity is sha

National Identity in The English Patient

There is no argument against the idea that there is a stereotypical view attached to national identity; however, this does not give an accurate portrayal of an individual. Throughout The English Patient, by Michael Ondaatje, identity, or lack or, seems to be a generally recurring theme throughout the novels entirety, but identity goes beyond just ones physical traits. It envelops the roots of ones culture and establishes an individual sense of belonging in the world. The Kip and the English Patient, two prominent characters of the text, are portrayed in specific ways due to where they come from, but each possess numerous meaningful, yet convoluted pieces to a puzzle that when pieced together, creates their national identity, their exclusive place in the world. Throughout The English Patient, Kip struggles to choose whether he should follow his family's culture or adopt a new, more modern western lifestyle, while the English Patient chooses to abandon national identity as a whole and li

The Canadian Court Challenges Program

With a multi-cultural population extensively present in Canada, it is expected that the courts, institutions and laws are sufficient in providing a fair and equal opportunity for all members of the public. The Constitution and the Charter of Rights and Freedoms allow citizens from different groups to be represented and recognized in a fair and equal process - required they have fulfilled the requirements and have sufficient funding. If the public deems this representation unconstitutional, unattainable and objective, then the Charter of Rights and Freedoms also permits them to confront this through a wide variety of resources; the courts, institutions, media and specific government programs. Programs such as the Court Challenges Program (CCP), are also seen as a means for providing the public or disadvantaged groups with the best-interest by giving them the opportunity to fund their case. Canadian courts and the CCP come across several different types of disputes and cases involving a

The Crucible - Characters and Themes

Character Analysis John Proctor A local farmer who lives just outside town; Elizabeth Proctor's husband. A stern, harsh-tongued man, John hates hypocrisy. Nevertheless, he has a hidden sin - his affair with Abigail Williams - that proves his downfall. When the hysteria begins, he hesitates to expose Abigail as a fraud because he worries that his secret will be revealed and his good name ruined. In a sense, The Crucible has the structure of a classical tragedy, with John Proctor as the play's tragic hero. Honest, upright, and blunt-spoken, Proctor is a good man, but one with a secret, fatal flaw. His lust for Abigail Williams led to their affair (which occurs before the play begins), and created Abigail's jealousy of his wife, Elizabeth, which sets the entire witch hysteria in motion. Once the trials begin, Proctor realizes that he can stop Abigail's rampage through Salem but only if he confesses to his adultery. Such an admission would ruin his good name, and Proctor is, above all, a

Cognitive Psychology Evaluation

This one line quote explains more about humans than any definition, research or a detailed book. Human cognition is the subject of utmost interest and has been so for many years. Role of Cognition in Psychology The Approach to cognitive science is a comparatively present day methodology to human conduct that brings light on how we think, with a strong conviction that such points that influence the route in which we act are of most importance. Origin of Cognitive Approach There is a certain lengthy debate concerning who pioneered the cognitive methodology, yet a few reliable sources ascribe the term to the 1950s and 1960s, with Ulric Neisser's book Cognitive Psychology, which made unquestionable references of the human personality through extensive working in a debatable and comparable manner to machines. Some researchers believe that the methodology occurred partially because of huge disappointment regarding the behavioral approach, which religiously concentrated on our unmistakable

School Uniforms - Smarter and Safer

"Our biggest problem with a school uniform policy is the anti-individuality message it sends" (Fetzer, Kent J). Individuality has an essential value in America. According to the first amendment, all Americans have the right to express their own opinion without any fear of punishment. This value, however, is not appropriate for schools. School uniforms establish better performance instead of stifling the individuality. School uniforms should be required for all schools because school uniform makes students' lives simpler and stress free, makes students disciplined and focused on their studies with less peer pressure, develops unity and equality among the students which results in less violence, and gives students an opportunity through which they can express themselves in a unique way. Firstly, wearing school uniform makes students' lives less complex and worry free. They do not have to decide what to wear every morning; choosing an outfit is a difficult task, and trying an outfit af

Organ Donors and Recipients

You're lying down on a hospital bed in excruciating pain. You've been there for a week and you're just receiving your third dialysis. Instead of a kidney filtering your body waste it's replaced by a machine. It's possible to live for years with this treatment, twenty years if you're lucky. The doctor puts you on the waitlist for a kidney transplant due to a shortage of organ donors. You then are left with a question. Who would give up an organ for free? Many Americans are in need for organ transplants, but only a few are able to survive since there aren't enough donated organs. Like many other countries, it is illegal to purchase an organ in the United States. Many turn to foreign black markets, such as China as their only chance of receiving an organ. There has been a rise in organ sale activity in the black market, which is not always the safe choice. The black market isn't regulated, safe, donors are often scammed, and there's a chance that some organs could have been forcefully tak
