Lab - Effects of pH on the Activity of Catalase

Introduction Enzymes are proteins that catalyse the speed of biochemical reactions in the body. They are responsible for all metabolic functions and are absolutely vital for life itself. Without enzymes, reactions would take place too slowly to keep you alive. These proteins are highly specific regarding what they do and under what conditions they do it in. Like a lock and key, the enzyme and substrate must fit correctly in order for the enzyme to work properly. The reaction we are investigating is the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide catalysed by the enzyme catalase. Five trials will be run at pH levels 4,7 and 10 From prior knowledge, I know that pH is a measure of the concentrations of hydrogen ions in a solution. The higher the hydrogen ion concentration, the lower the pH. A change in pH above or below will affect the enzyme rate of reaction and the actual activity of the enzyme. Changes in pH lead to the breaking of the ionic bonds that hold the tertiary structure of the enzyme in

Secret of the Law of Attraction

Everybody holds secrets; some are terrifying, others are helpful but knowing the secret is the best thing for a human being, instead of living in doubtfulness. Bob Proctor once said "You can have anything we want because of this secret"." The secret is the answer to all. Doesn't matter where you are its attraction. What is the secret? The secret is the law of attraction. The law of attraction attracts good or bad. To give an example the secret is like a magnet it attracts everything. Whatever a human attracts it goes to the mind even if it's positive or negative. Some people may question this but our thoughts become into things. This is law is very obedient. Because this law is always working, they are no breaks or a pause or play bottom it keeps on going and going. Whenever you have a negative thought or say negative things, the law of attraction will capture that and negative things will happen to you. The law of attraction is obedient if you focus on the things you desire, you will have the thing

The Many Benefits of Music

Background For years I was just coasting through life, aimlessly, going wherever the wind took me. Then, my sixth grade year I was introduced to something that completely changed my life for the better. Although the arts are not always looked upon as an important aspect of childhood education, it can be some of the most important skills that a child can learn. "Music helps students activate prior knowledge and contributes to achievement in fundamental motor skills" (Deli, Bakle, and Zachopoulou, 2006). Music education classes do not receive nearly enough credit for the benefits in children's lives, and I believe that with public knowledge of these benefits, this issue can change. Music helps the brain to function in unfamiliar ways, introducing skills such as perception, phonological memory, metacognitive knowledge, and mental imagery. Although music can be a difficult skill to learn, with todays technology and the social emotional support from music educators, music can be extremely b

Body Rituals of the Nacirema "

In June 1956, Horace Miner published an article called "Body Rituals of the Nacirema"" in American Anthropologists. This article discussed of a culture of people in between Mexico and Canada, the United States. When looking closely at the article you see that Nacirema is simply American spelled backwards, because this article is a satirical piece, being very critical of the United States. It peers into the everyday life of the North Americans. Miner discusses ways that the Nacirema attempts to keep away disease and disability; and for the most part he is disclosing what the Nacirema appear to be doing habitually. Horace Miner uses his Sociological Imagination, to portray that diversity isn't about normality but instead the beliefs inside of a culture. Every culture has its social norms, or an adapted behavior shared by a culture or group. In this article Horace Miner discusses the habits we have adapted to. Miner states that "Each Nacirema family shares a family shrine as part of the

A Letter to Jane Austen

Dear Ms. Austen, My sophomore year of high school, I was required to read your book "Pride and Prejudice." We were given four weeks to finish this Romantic novel out of class, along with weekly in class check-ups. Although I found that your book was composed of a well developed plot and a large fan base, it was not one of my favorites. Surprisingly, however much I love listening to girls talk about their feelings, reading about them was a much more unfavorable experience for me. I have detailed in this letter a few reasons why your book does not top my list of favorites. I understand that you grew up during a time in which dowry's were socially acceptable and old english was the only proper way to talk to be accepted into society. However, had it been written in a present day setting and with current social stigmas

India's Space Program

India is fast progressing in the field of space research. It is emerging as a big name in this field. The country is now capable of launching its own spacecraft. In fact, it offers this service to many other countries. Now India has made landmark progress with the launch of Chandrayaan for its moon mission. India started its space programme with the launch of first space satellite "Aryabhatta" on April 19, 1975. This space satellite was named after the great Indian astronomer and mathematician of the 5th century, Aryabhatta. It was launched from a soviet cosmodrome with the help of a Soviet rocket. It marked India's giant leap and made her the eleventh country to join the space club. The second satellite "Bhaskara" was launched on June 7, 1979. It was also launched from a Soviet cosmodrome. It was named after two eminent personalities: Bhaskara I and Bhaskara II. It was followed by "Rohini." It was the f

Early American Captivity Narratives

Captivity narratives were popular with readers in both American and the European communities. Captivity narratives of Americans relate the experiences of whites enslaved by Native Americans and Africans enslaved by Americans. Two widely read captivity narratives are The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano by Olaudah Equiano and are A Narrative of Captivity by Mary Rowlandson, in which relate the experiences of an eleven-year-old African male captured for the American slave market and of an adult white woman captured by Native Americans. Examining both narratives reveals differences in the purpose of the narratives, the similar and contrasting experiences and reactions of the two captives, how religion played a role in both experiences and the elements of literature used in the two famous works. In Equiano's narrative, he is taken from his African home and thrown into a Western world completely foreign to him. He is a slave for a total of ten years and endeavors to t

Physics Lab - Latent Heat of Fusion

Abstract This experiment was conducted with the goal of applying the method of mixtures protocol to determine the latent heat of fusion of ice. Three trials were conducted using a calorimeter with water at room temperature and ice along with known values of specific heat of water and the calorimeter to determine the unknown latent heat of fusion. Using the formula for latent heat of fusion, the three trials yielded 3.01 x 105 J/kg, 2.97 x 105 J/kg, and 2.70 x 105 J/kg with percent error 9.6%, 11.9%, and 19.9% respectively. Introduction The purpose of this experiment is to determine the latent heat fusion of ice. Physics for Dummies reports that latent heat is the heat needed to cause a change in phase per kilogram.[1] The law of conservation of energy states that energy is neither created nor destroyed.[2] Instead, energy is transferred; the first Law of Thermodynamics is examined. The thermal energy exchange within our water sample creates a change in our water temperature and the

Education - Students and IEP's

In Hicksville High School, the teachers here have encountered multiple problems with their students and faculty in order to try for their students to achieve and receive the best possible scores and results. Often times, students in the classroom are seen as having a disability when in reality, it is possible that they are not native english speakers or have other real world problems such as working to raise a family or receive an income for themselves and families. There are many problems when it comes down to determining and labeling a student as disabled or whether the student has other issues such as learning the English language. However with that being said, many teachers, such as the teachers in Hicksville high school, work with their students and other faculty members in order for the student to be as comfortable as possible in and out of the classroom. At Hicksville high school, the LPP program is very helpful with working with students who need extra help and time to get th

Cinema, Gender Roles and Social Transformation

Compared to the theatrical stage, motion pictures have proven to be a more flexible medium, spawning an industry that due to its reach and accessible nature propagated ideas and spread information without any bias towards social class or status. The invention of cinema and the projection of films on just about any screen meant that this form of entertainment managed to make more accessible what was previously available to just a select group of society. The impact of motion pictures over communication and the public in general granted this medium a level of influence that not many new technologies were able to reach.1 Cinema was not only bringing change but was also emphasising the social and political transformations that were occurring at the beginning of the twentieth century, and as a consequence it was perceived as a threat by those who feared a decrease of their power in society. As a result, beginning with the early days of silent film, the matter over the content of movies and

Abnormal Psychology - Observing Charles Manson

Charles Manson was born in 1935 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His birth was unplanned and that of a single,16 year old prostitute and alcoholic. His young mother placed him in a boarding school, but would not allow him to return home when he ran away and no longer wanted to be involved in caring for him. He turned to the streets for answers, taking up a life of small crimes to get paid and try and get by. This led him to live a constant life in and out of prison. This was like a dream to him, since his mother had abandoned him and he was aware that she was too often incarcerated. When not in prison, he spent time with his uncle from the mountains, which is where he gained a lot of his unique points of view. In fact, some of his uncle's rants are what inspired him to light his school on fire at the age of 9. By the age of thirteen he had already committed higher levels of crime like stealing cars and armed robbery. By the age of 20 he had decided to marry and have a baby with a 17 year old girl who came from a very different background than him. Although he managed to hold small odd jobs to take care of them, he continued to steal cars on the side and was i

The European Motivation for Exploration

What were the varying motivations of European countries in regards to their expansion into the New World?  Please discuss at least 3 countries and at least 3 of their motivations in your own words. One of the principal reasons for exploration was the urge to find new routes to East Asia. In 1400s, merchants had brought many goods to Europe from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The products demand raised the desire for commerce. European countries were mainly interested in spices from Asia. They had learned how to use spices and to conserve food during the winter. Thus, Christopher Columbus navigated west across the Atlantic Ocean, and he was looking for such a way. Instead of Indies, he had landed in the Americas. Columbus believed he arrived the Indies. In this period, Europeans would realize that he had found what they called the "New World." European countries promptly rushed to allege lands in the Americas. Spain was interested in the God, Gold, and Glory. Cortés was the first of Spain pe

NASA and the Curiosity Rover

"Let's see where Curiosity can take us," were the words that accompanied the successful landing of the Curiosity rover on the Martian surface (Burch). NASA had docked another robot on the neighbor planet, and although the event created an atmosphere of pride and hope for the future of space exploration, it left a taste of impotence for not touching Martian ground with our own feet. It has been forty-five years since Neil Armstrong last stepped onto extraterrestrial soil, and even though humankind has explored beyond the orbit of the moon via rovers, satellites, and other robots, some still want to see people thrive outside of Earth. Despite opinions about funding, efficiency, and relevance, both the scientific and non-scientific community support and yearn for a future manned mission. Man's dexterity and ability to solve problems, his enormous drive for discovery, adventure and exploration, and his immense power of influence as astronauts on society, present enough reasons to

A Raisin in the Sun - Character Analysis

In the play, "A Raisin in the Sun," by Lorraine Hansberry, the protagonist Walter Lee Younger goes through a dramatic change in character from the start to the end. Walter is a middle aged man who wants to make more of his life than be a chauffeur by investing a lot of money to buy a liquor store with the consequence of sacrificing his family's happiness. One of the biggest factors in Walter's change in character from a selfish man to a selfless one is his mother. Walter, through the guilt he felt after hurting his mother, grew up and took responsibility for his family. Mama is a very strong character in this play. She is the keystone to the Younger family's metaphorical bridge. Being Walter's mother, she has authority over him, and uses it to her advantage in the play. For example, she often is the one to bring him to reality when he often fantasizes about the prospect of owning a liquor store. When Mama receives the check that contains the money that her late husband spend his life

The Nola Pender Health Promotion Model

Nola Pender was born in Lansing, Michigan, in 1941. As the only child, her parents were strong advocates for the education in women. As a child Pender expressed an early interest in nursing when her aunt was hospitalized. With the help and support of her family she pursued her desire to obtain a nursing diploma from the West Suburban hospital in Oak park, Illinois in 1962. She spent the next few years working in a medical-surgical until and a pediatric unit (Pender, 2013). She completed a BSN at Michigan State University in East Lansing in 1964. Only one year later in 1965, Pender earned an MA in human growth and development from Michigan State University. She received her Ph. D. in 1969 in psychology and education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She also completed master's level studies in community health nursing at Rush university in Chicago. Since 1990, Pender has been professor and associate dean for research at the University Of Michigan School Of Nursing (Pende

Main Stages of Ossification in Long Bone

Ossification is the formation of bone and is a complex process that starts in the foetal stage of development. There are various types of bone that develop in different ways. However, this essay is going to focus on the main stages of ossification of long bone and will include the role of osteoblasts and osteoclasts. A foetus is initially all cartilage until calcification takes place and the cartilage is ossified. The hyaline (meaning glassy) cartilage forms the skeleton of a foetus (www.britannica.com), it is a semi transparent matrix rich in proteoglycan (protein and glucose) and collagen and elastin fibres. These are produced via secretion by chondrocyte cells. The hyaline cartilage is surrounded by a fibrous membrane called perichondrium that contains blood vessels which supplies nourishment to the cartilage. A Cartilaginous matrix is released by the chondrocytes, it is of a firm and elastic consistency, the chondrocytes divide and produce new cells that in turn construct more mat

Soulmates in Wuthering Heights

Question How does the relationship between Heathcliff and Catherine as soulmates and the love that they have for one another affect the actions and decisions they make in their lives? Response Throughout Emily Bronte's novel Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff and Catherine's profound love for each other and their relationship as soulmates is reflected upon the decisions and actions made by the two. This is seen when both Heathcliff and Catherine try to overcome numerous obstacles, Heathcliff's reactions to Catherine's death, and Heathcliff's long urge to seek revenge on Edgar. The first way in which Brontë shows how Heathcliff and Catherine's relationship as soul mates affects the decisions they made is seen by having them overcome numerous obstacles in order to be close to each other. Even though the obstacles presented to the characters vary and have different results, all of the hardships that come between Catherine and Heathcliff have the same effect on both of them after the pro

UNICEF - Helping Syrian Children

The United Nations Children's Fund, more colloquially known as UNICEF, is the main United Nations organization defending, promoting and protecting children's rights. Its main focus is working towards protecting the world's most disadvantaged children. It believes that children have the right to adequate nutrition, clean water, education, health and protection[Uni]. They have the global authority to influence decision-makers and partners that can turn their ideas into reality. Their goal is to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child's path and are active in more than 190 countries and territories through the country programmes and National Committees [UNI]. The Executive Board is the governing body of UNICEF, providing intergovernmental support and oversight to the organization, in accordance with the overall policy guidance of the United Nations General Assembly and the Economic and Social Council [UNI1]. The Duality of Hamlet

Shakespeare's Hamlet has and intricate plot formed by the characters and themes throughout it. One major idea is Hamlet's changing sanity, which fluctuates through the play as a performance and as a true madness. The other main theme which develops the play is the act of vengeance, with the delay and doubt that accompanies it. These themes, along with dramatic devices and the characters in the plot, add to the textual integrity of the play. There is a duality to the character of Hamlet, as his madness changes from a performance to true insanity throughout the play. Initially, in Act 1 Scene 5, Hamlet is coerced by the ghost and decides that he will "put an antic disposition on". This is the main use of dramatic irony in the play, as the audience knows Hamlet's madness is performed. However as the play develops and changes, so too does Hamlet's madness.Act 3 Scene 4 is the main turning point for Hamlet's madness. The scene begins with a confrontation between Gertrude and Hamlet

Ten Point Code of Ethics - Information Technology

Introduction In the Information Technology field as with many professional fields it is necessary to have a clear code of ethics that ensures the safety of the professional, the organization, and the client. This code of ethics should reflect the standards that are put forth by the profession and the expectations that the profession has for those who work in this field. When developing the code of ethics I reflected on what has been important to me in my career in terms of technology, ethics, and safety in the military and in my current career. I also reflected on what I believe will be important to me when I entered the information technology profession, and what is ethically correct in terms of the profession, the organization for which I work, for the clients, and for all stakeholders. Based on this reflection, the ten point code of ethics below represents what I believe to be important in terms of the information technology profession. Point One Follow the steps necessary to preve

Five Topics Related to HIV

Recent reports from DOH shows that more than half of newly-infected PLHIV (People Living with HIV) comes from age 20-29. This has been the running trend since 2008. Some new PLHIV were as young as 15 years old. This means that the actual threat of the HIV and AIDS epidemic is already felt and is affecting our younger generation, this includes students from high schools and colleges. Our young professionals that fuel the labor force and the Philippine economy is under attack. Based on the statistic that was published by the DOH (Department of Health) that in the our country we have (18,836) reported cases from year 1984-2014 and as of January to May this year the reported cases is (2,320). This May, 2014, alone we have (495) reported cases. Most of the cases (96%) were male. As students, our role now shifts from a passive listener of lectures on Health Sciences that use to bore the four corners of the high school classroom a decade or two ago to a more active participation in the progr

The Effects of Gender on Crime

In this report, I will be using Walklate's book to discuss the role of women in regards to crime and the criminal justice system. I have used an extensive range of sources, whether they are journals, books or articles. The topic of gender and crime is vast, and can be taken from many different angles. I have chosen to write it from a feminist point of view rather than the masculine approach. There are many different themes and lines of arguments; I have focused on three crucial subjects, The Validity and Reliability of Statistical Data, The Sex Role Theory and Biological and Psychological Reasonings. When discussing gender and crime, there is sometimes confusion around the word gender, however there is an essential difference between gender and sex. Sex is dependant on your anatomy and hormones in the body whereas gender is the role in which society has created which describes the characteristics that society believe we should have. While there is universal knowledge about our indivi

Benefits of Sports Participation

In 1776 this country, the United States of America, was established. That is a long time - 238 years to be exact. Now, with that leading sentence you make think that this essay is going to be about my belief in our great country, which I do believe in, but that is not what I'm going to write about and support. What this is going to be about is the power of sports. The reason I incorporated my first sentence into this intro was because we all know that fact, and sports have been around much longer. For example, there is the belief that Hercules, a son of Zeus, had started the ancient Olympic Games. If you don't believe this myth, which you have the right to since it is a myth, we have records from Olympics that took place in 776 BCE. These Olympics were performed naked and the only events were sprints and long distance running. To put our country's age in perspective to how long sports have been recorded, it's about nine times longer. Sports have been a constant for as long as the huma

Opportunities in the Field of Nursing

There are many different types of nurses in the US, many of which hold different degrees. For the purpose of my paper, I interviewed Jennifer Persons, a Licensed Practical Nurse, or LPN, Heike Phillipsen, a Registered Nurse with an associates degree in nursing (RN-ADN), and Maureen Davis, a Registered Nurse with a baccalaureates degree in nursing (RN-BSN). All three women's journeys began the same way, by enrolling in a collegiate nursing program. After the first year of nursing school, they all had to take and pass the NCLEX-PN, which is the National Council Licensure Examination-Practical Nurse. For both Heike and Maureen their education carried on - two years for Heike and three years for Maureen. In addition to theoretical education, every nursing student must demonstrate their practical knowledge in hospitals. No matter what level of nurse one chooses to become, the number one priority is putting the patient first and ens
