Course Reflection - FeminismSection 1 Definitions of Feminism Feminism as a whole is something that is often misinterpreted and looked down upon. Some think that because women are now allowed to vote and work that feminism is no longer needed. Feminism was established more than just to give women the right to vote and support themselves; it was created so as to eliminate sexism and discrimination. Over the years many different types of feminism have surfaced. Although there is a common goal between them, there are varying views. From Liberal to Radical feminism, women and also men can chose which underlining form they stand under. Liberal feminism is one that tends to have more attention in the media. This group inclines to focus on equal right in the workplace such as equal pay and sex segregation as well as issues on access to education and political rights. Liberal feminist also support issues on abortion and reproductive rights and also tackle issues regarding sexual assault and harassment. Put simple by Wom |

Dogs and the Breed Specific Legislation (BSL)Breed Specific Legislation (BSL), is a blanket term for laws that either ban or regulate certain breeds completely in hopes of reducing dog attacks. Now this may sound like a really good idea to some people, but if one takes the time to sit down and read what this law will actually be doing, it is clear that the law is trying to get the public to target one certain breed. This does not help actually find a real solution for dog attacks. What these people are trying to do is eliminate a type of breed they believe to be dangerous, either because of a personal experience or something they read or saw on TV. Today this law mainly seems to focus on pit bulls and any dog that might look like a pit bull or mix. On Monday, May 9, 2005, the Denver Division of Animal Control began enforcing a city-wide ban on owning pit bull terrie |

Flannery O'Connor and Southern RacismBeing from Canada and coming down to the South, I honestly didn't know what to expect. You hear stories about how bad racism is and the rich history the South has. As soon as I got down here I could already tell that it was going to be a lot different. Racism is everywhere I go down here and I can't begin to understand why people are still living in the past. Being from one of the most diverse countries in the world where there is hardly any racism, coming down here was a shock to the body. I travelled down to Tuscaloosa, Alabama where my roommate was from last year. We went to go watch Alabama play LSU in football. The day after the game we went squirrel hunting and we had stopped at a gas station along the way. I walked into the gas station. There standing behind the counter was an old weathered man with thick glasses and an unkempt looking cat. I walk up to this battered looking fridge and grabbed a blue Gatorade and a can of snuff. I put it on the counter and the first words out |

The Hong Wah Kues Discover AmericaAuthor Laurence Yep argues in his piece, "The Hong Wah Kues Discover America," that the Chinese basketball team was used unfairly for the purpose of entertainment because they were treated as minorities and barely earned any money. Owner James W. Porter formed the Hong Wah Kues basketball team who consisted of six Chinese American players from Chinatown in San Francisco, California. These men played on a "barnstorming" tour throughout America and Canada. The study focuses upon predominantly Chinese American people, but also discusses the likes of African Americans and Native Americans. Since the Kues were formed in 1939 and played throughout the 1940's, this meant that the economy still had to coincide with the repercussions of the Great Depression. The team also experienced hardship because a few of the players had to quit playing for the team because they were drafted to the army for World War II. One of the most pivotal advertising plans for the Hon Wah Kues wa |

Dead Poets Society - Character Analysis on Neil PerryAdolescence is a vital transitional point in life where character must be built, taking in influences, making decisions, and forming elements that will prepare a person to start living their life as an adult. This universal theme of adolescence runs true and vital in the film Dead Poets Society (1989). The movie follows a cohort of students in the highly prestigious, academic boarding school, Welton Academy. The academy, dedicated to shaping the future leaders of the country, builds their school in accordance to the four pillars representing their ideologies: tradition, honor, discipline and excellence. Neil Perry, a bright, charismatic and naturally gifted student excels in this school, getting good grades and being a popular leader figure among his peers. As a teenager, Neil's personal construction of himself and his own identity was naturally affected by the influence of others, especially those he saw as authoritative figures, and simultaneously subject to his own increasing sen |

Death of My FriendLiving in a serene village near the pristine sea was a real treasure for me as its tranquillity and refreshing atmosphere with a picturesque sea was a really perfect getaway whenever my head was on the verge with all of the schools' works and pressures. Every day, my best friend, Razman and I would go to the sea to watch the sun sets as the invigorating coolness of the sea breeze caressed our skins. Ever since we were in the kindergartens, we had done the same thing. In the eye of the fishermen there, Razman and I are kindred spirits and our genuine camaraderie could never be separated by hooks or crooks. One day, I was feeling a little bit under the weather. My head was spinning and my body was soaking wet with perspirations. So, I decided to take a nap in order to recuperate my illness. Out of the blue, Razman came visiting me. He asked me to accompany him to the ice cream's stall near the beach. I refused his tempting request almost instantly as my condition was not permissible. But, he kept begging me and his constant chatter was really irascible that I thought my head was going to explode. I tried to control my temper but I failed. I shouted at him, "Just go there by y |

Carmen - Fatalistic Romanticism"Carmen" is an opera in four acts. It was written in 1873-1874 and debuted in 1875 (Oxford Dictionary). It portrays the dangers of the Romantic ideal. The ultimate climax - Carmen's murder - was seen as too controversial for audiences of the time and was nearly omitted. Fortunately, Bizet was support by the singers and the original ending was permitted to remain (MacDonald, "Carmen"). Though passionate and fiery, beautiful and wild - all of which are ideals of the Romantic - ultimately, it is these very romantic traits that lead her to her untimely demise. Don Jose, though a conservative, restrained man, also portrays the dangers of allowing oneself to grow caught in the passions of the Romantic world. Ultimately, this is a story of love jinxed by passion and how Jose was "led away by the smiles of a woman until he had lost rank, honor, country and a pure love" (Chesney, 67). Act one is where our lead characters meet. It takes place in a square in Seville. There is a cigarette factor |

Hamlet - Character ComparisonsHamlet is a revenge tragedy of Elizabethan drama, written in about 1602 by William Shakespeare. It is based on the Historia Danica (1200) by Saxo Grammaticus, a Danish historian who wrote it in Latin. Later, an Italian version by Bandello, translated into French by Belleforest in his Cent Histoires Tragiques, was rendered into English in 1608 (Greenan, 83). In Shakespeare's play, the death of Old King Hamlet triggers different actions in its major characters; especially Hamlet, Gertrude, Claudius, Laertes, and to a lesser extent Polonius and Ophelia. These actions are disastrous not only to Denmark as a political entity; but also lead to the deaths of the all the play's characters, except for Horatio. In Act I Scene 5, the Ghost explains to Hamlet, how Claudius, Hamlet's uncle, murdered his father and that he wants Hamlet to avenge his death (I.v.38-90). The Ghost is directly linked to the majority of the play's themes. For example, he introduces the darkness of evil prevalent in Den |

Food and CelebrationHas there ever been a time in your life that you just wanted to relive over again because it was so breathtaking? A time that impacted your life so greatly that you just couldn't forget about it. Think back in your life and imagine that moment happening. What was it about it that made it so memorable? The people you were with? The sounds? The surroundings? How about the food? Has food ever made you closer to someone or given you the chance to relate to someone? If you think about it many people use food as a mediator. It is all around us and is not only used for nutrition but as a way of celebration. People go out to dinner on a date or get together as a family for a nice dinner. It allows us to get to know one another and gives us a time of relaxation. We are able to let go of everything and just enjoy the moment ahead of us. As a tradition in my family one of the ways to celebrate any event is by going out to dinner. It's a special time to allow the person being celebrated to be able to have their favorite meal. A time in particular that I will never forget was my graduation dinner. I had just gr |

Alexander Hamilton and the Federalist PapersAlexander Hamilton begins The Federalist No. 11 by explaining the importance of a Union to prospering commercial success and trade. He states that early commercial success and the "adventurous spirit "1 which distinguishes America in foreign trade, will be dangerous to the several maritime powers of Europe and threaten their existing trade advantages among the States. These European powers, Hamilton notes, will attempt to prevent us from interfering with the navigation of their naval fleets, capitalizing on the profits of our trade, and souring souring to greatness as a nation. He states that if the Union remained united, however, it would posses the ability to counteract such a policy by creating restricting regulations extending throughout the States. These specific policies would force foreign countries to bid against each other for access to our markets and allow us to secure favorable terms of trade with European powers. Hamilton then states that the second method to influenc |

Defining Successful TeachingToday's public schools are some of the most diverse schools in the nation. There are students from various neighborhoods, backgrounds and family lifestyle. Because of this diversity teachers will need to be able to function in classrooms that may differ from their lifestyle or background. In some cases this may be a problem for the novice teacher or a teacher who has been in a school that lack diversity. However, if a teacher is a good teacher or practices good teaching methods, it will not matter whether they are new or seasoned; they will be able to continue to teach well. Good teaching consists of strong classroom management, excellent teaching strategies, and being professionally responsible. Strong classroom management is paramount in the teaching profession. It is one of the most important aspects of teaching. A teacher who is strong at applying the principles of classroom management will have students who are excited about learning and students will actually learn more in this |

Frankenstein and Blade RunnerAssignment Compare the ways in which texts offer insights into the human experience. Respond to this statement in relation to the pair of texts that you have studied. Response Texts in time embody ideological concerns of their period, expressing the impact of influential values and human experience on texts. Human experience is knowledge or practical wisdom gained from observation or encounters, questioning what it is to be human. The 1818 multi framed novel "Frankenstein" and Ridley Scott's adaptation to Philip Dick's novel 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep' in the 1991 director's cut film "Blade Runner", portray this through deeply sensitive yet violent creatures seeking their makers. Whilst disparities in the genre, both texts offer insights into human experience, questioning how science tampers with nature and the prejudice received in the aftermath. These texts in time not only warn previous societies, but through insights into human experience, offe |

Nationalism in the Modern WorldDoes a country create nationalism or does nationalism create a country? These are the main questions rooted in the study of nationalism. First appearing in England and introduced my Protestantism and eventually replaced by ones consciousness and dignity as an individual; nationalism is defined as the advocacy of or support for the interests of one's own nation, especially to the exclusion or detriment of the interests of other nations. Nationalism is said to give an individual pride in their own country and give someone national identity, but when does that pride go too far? When does that pride become self-obsessive and end up resulting in a country thinking that their way of life, ethnic background or political agenda is better than others? In this essay I will be discussing the reasons as to why I believe nationalism is a negative force in the modern world. It has been seen time and time again that nationalism has led to the rise of extremism. Some of the worst atrocities that have |

Satan in John Milton's Paradise LostParadise Lost is an epic poem written by John Milton in the seventeenth century and it is based on the concept of epic conventions such as epic similes, invocation, catalogue or beginning in medias res. The essential theme of epic poetry is usually heroism and this poem is no exception. Since hero is mostly someone who achieves something positive, it is questionable whether Satan is hero. This essay will discuss whether Satan, which is main character, is indeed a hero or actually anti-hero. As already mentioned, epic poems usually start in the middle. Paradise Lost, Book I begins with invocation of a muse and narrating of: "man's first disobedience, and the fruit/Of that forbidden tree, whose mortal taste/ Brought death into the world."(l.1-3) When the narrator starts the story, angels have already fallen into the "fiery gulf" that is Hell. Milton here reminds readers of first disobedience of God and puts Satan in that context. Just like Adam and Eve fell in their faith, so |

Women and the Pursuit of EqualityThe notion of male superiority has ravaged earth for centuries. Male dominance in this patriarchal world has caused women to have a voiceless obedience to men. This phenomenon exists within all cultures from China to America. According to John Ward Anderson, "Overall, there is a social and cultural attitude where women are inferior -- and discrimination tends to start at birth " (The Burden of Womanhood: Third World, Second Class). And this ideal of male dominance is first developed in the chapter "No Name Woman " in the memoir Woman Warrior. In this memoir, Kingston's aunt went against the norms of her village by becoming illegitimately pregnant. She is shunned for this "selfish, " personal act. Privacy is not something Chinese women are given the privilege of. Kingston worries that if she does not find her own voice, if she remains silent, she will end up exactly like her aunt, dominated by the men of society without a voice. However, by writing "No Name Woman ", Kingston brings her |

Adolph Hitler - The Enabling ActLord Acton once said, "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely. "The formal title for the Enabling Act was the "Law to Remedy the Distress of People and Reich. The Enabling Act passed on March 1933 and allowed Adolph Hitler to obtain absolute power and enabled Hitler's dictatorship for four years. Hitler had the power to enact laws without the parliamentary's approval. In order for Hitler to obtain dictatorship he negotiated with the Centre Party offering that their power would be protected if they supported the Enabling Act. Not only that, in order for the Enabling Act to pass, he needed a two-thirds majority of votes. Hitler accomplished this by threatening and bullying any opposition. On July 14th, 1933 all political parties other than the Nazi party, were banned on the orders of Hitler. The people who resisted were sent to concentration camps. It would normally take only twenty-four hours to place into the law or legislation under Hitler's command. When the En |

The citizens of the country, before then rarely thought about Muslims, the Middle East, or terrorism in general, except for a few minutes a week, when it was a topic on the nightly news. Since the attacks, Americans thoughts about Islam, terrorism as well as security, have become a way of life. As you already know, September 11, 2001 was one of the worst days in American history. Four commercial airliners were hijacked by radical Islamic terrorists. Defining SchizophreniaIntroduction Schizophrenia means, "split mind" which makes people believe that this illness is a multiple personality disorder, but it is really referring to the split from reality. While there is still a stigma attached to this illness, public awareness and support is critical to help people with Schizophrenia function in life. Schizophrenia runs in families, which means that it has genetic traits that are inherited. Schizophrenics possess different brain structures and brain chemistry. Often the environment plays a role through the introduction of viruses and nutrition problems in the months and weeks prior to birth. The illness is a lifelong condition for which there is no cure. Taking psychoactive drugs during adolescence can cause Schizophrenia. Early diagnosis of the symptoms is critical for understanding the onset of the mental illness and the specific type. I decided to choose Schizophrenia as my topic because I have worked with teenagers my age with this illness. I |

Setting and Moral Analysis - A Sound of ThunderRay Bradbury is best known for his writing in the fantasy genre and "A Sound of Thunder" exemplifies that writing style. "A Sound of Thunder" is a short story that although only a few pages long incorporates two different settings. Events from within the story are also strongly influenced by the setting of Bradbury's life during the writing of this piece in the early 1950s. As the characters of the story travel through time and change settings the moral of the story becomes ever more apparent to the reader as well as the characters themselves. This moral is brought about or antagonized by the setting rather than specific characters who normally play the role as antagonist. The setting is what develops the characters, creates tension, produces a moral, and leaves the story with a resolution that is meaningful. The two settings that appear in the short story are the time travel company, Time Safari Inc., and the jungle. The five main characters are Eckels, Travis, Lesperance, Keith, and Deutscher as well as two other side characters Billings and Kramer. The hunters and guides, all characters except for Deutscher and Keith, start in |

Russia and the Defeat of the German ArmyOn the 22nd of June 1941 Germany invaded Russia, an invasion named: Operation Barbarossa. This was an attack which continued until January 1044, when after 900 days Germany's plan to defeat Russia failed. There are various different theories to explain Germany's defeat yet it is clear that Germany was defeated because of their poor planning and inferior tactics. Mistake 1 Splitting the Army into Two Divisions Hitler was assertive that the German army would defeat the Soviet army, he was sure that his army could match the size of the Red Army and that the Germans were much better equipped. Hitler's confidence was Germany's first mistake; he split up their army, resulting in Germany fighting on two different fronts. The problem with splitting up their army is that although Hitler believed that their army was superior to the Red Army, he had fewer men to fight which makes this also Hitler's most crucial mistake. Mistake 2 Dividing the Army into Three Divisions Hitler had three main |

Mise-en-Scene - The GraduateEvery inexperienced man desperately desires a confident, beguiling older woman to seduce him. The Graduate weaves the tale of such a vulnerable young man who begins the story as the defenseless protagonist but ultimately overcomes his unguarded nature and cripples the older temptress. As the story unfolds, Benjamin embraces his aggressive individuality in juxtaposition to his timid passive character that he was in the beginning of the movie. Mrs. Robinson is an older woman whose daughter is the same age as Benjamin. She is the typical house wife from the 1960's, taking care of her husband and not working outside the home. However, she has a seductive temptress side which was not customary in the early 60's prior to the sexual revolution. You are going to watch how they become inverses. Benjamin becomes the assertive and Mrs. Robinson becomes the weaker one. Regardless of the dialogue, the visual aspects of the scenes convey the shift in power.
