Harmful Effects of WhalingIn his essay, "Whales R Us," Jayme Stayer uncovered the reality behind marine parks all over the world where currently forty-nine killer whales live in captivity. Visiting Sea World inspired him to draw a true picture about the "education" that Sea World claims. Stayer heard trainers repeat the same hypocritical words each time the whales performed: "We here at Sea World believe that animals should not be taken from their natural habitat." However, since marine parks receive the whales from the black market that supports the whaling industry, they have become indirectly involved in the barbaric act of hunting, and killing numerous whales in the process, removing the majestic creatures from the wild. Anti-whaling advocates have come to strongly believe that whaling should be banned because killing whales for any purpose is an injustice that does not benefit the economy; furthermore, whale hunting can lead to the extinction of these magnificent animals. As science has shown, whales have large brains and a high level of intelligence that makes them similar to dolphins and |

Improvisational EducationEveryone hungers for knowledge. From the day we are born until the day we die, our brains constantly seek out new stimuli. As creatures of habit, we must strive to balance the feeling of security from routine, with excitement and spontaneity. Although many of us realize this as adults, the same must be true for children. The education system should be built around a framework, but should also include the possibility for the teachers and students to be able to improvise, like in jazz. The United State's educational system has not changed much since the 1950's. School's have largely been the same since there have been schools. A teacher stands at the front of the class, and lectures to the students. The teacher prepares them for a test, that will tell the teacher whether the students understand the material. The students then go home, and review the material from the day's lecture, and do homework of some kind. This procedure became more standardized after the First World War. This was |

From Selfish to SelflessLooking back, as a young girl I never really seemed to care about where I lived, the clothes I wore, but most importantly I never realized how much my parents were able to provide for us. I have always been fortunate enough to be able to receive things that other children weren't able to have. Not until a few years ago, I had to face my mother's sickness to help me see that life isn't easy and nothing is given to you by hand. Working hard is the only option for success. My mother's sickness changed me completely, and not only gave me a lesson about life, but also gave me responsibility. One day about three years ago my mother called me on my cell phone while in class and told me, "Erika I'm going to the doctor, please tell your father to pick you from school." I didn't think much of it at first and said, "Okay then, I will" and I hung up. When I got home from school I ate, took a nap and did some homework. Moments later my father came into my room and told me, & |

Decreasing Power of the Catholic ChurchAt the beginning of the 1400's, the Catholic Church was one of the most powerful and influential institutions in Europe. Europeans' desire to get salvation, motivated them to follow the Catholic Church's rules and teachings. The Black Plague caused Europeans to the doubt the Catholic Church. Then, fighting between two Catholic powers, England and France, during the Hundred years war, also caused Europeans to question the Catholic Church. Finally, the Great Schism led Europeans to doubt the Catholic Church. These major events contributed to the loss of the Catholic Church's power and influence The Black Plague was one of the darkest and more horrific moments in world history. The Black Plague was a pandemic that spread across Europe from 1347 to 1553, killing millions of people. The Plague was said to have been brought to Europe by flea-infested Asian black rats on a grain ship (Bowers, 2001, 129). As the disease spread rapidly social breakdown occurr |

Walt Disney and Brother's Grimm - Cinderella"Cinderella," was originally a European folk-tale, telling about a tyrannized heroine, who ends up marrying the prince of the story. Throughout the years, authors such as Walt Disney and Brothers Grimm altered the tale in their own way. Both have numerous differences based on intentions, such as culture, time frame, and plot. More importantly, they changed the story to correspond to whom they are changing the story for. Due to their recommended audiences, Disney's version compared to the Grimm's, "Cinderella," are drastically different. Disney is focused on making movies for more kids, and the characters take a more friendly approach as opposed to Brothers Grimm's. Disney follows the fairy godmother's role, to grant all of Cinderella's wishes (Grant). This ties the whole story together, to follow through with the main objective, while being as kid-friendly as possible. In Grimm's, white birds, act as Cinderella's support in helping her throughout the whole story, not just the night of |

India - Views of Premarital SexYoung Samita has no immediate plan for marriage. At 26, she has been working as an IT professional, in Delhi since 2010. When asked about her sex life, she frankly admits to being in a relationship. On the possibility of marrying her current boyfriend her answer was somewhat casual. Clearly, her priority was her career, and there were too many variables in her relationship that could affect the possibility of marriage. Samita is not a character from some Bollywood movie. She is just one of a new generation of Indians, who seem to find premarital sex an acceptable, or rather amenable idea. India's integration into the global economy, has resulted in rapid economic growth. It has not only brought fresh career opportunities for the young Indians, but also influenced their cultural outlook to a great extent. The cultural values of the western world have slowly found their way into Indian popular imagination, through the Hollywood movies and TV shows. The movies and shows show sexuality, and sexual behavior in a relatively uninhibited expression. Even Indian film industries have gradually opened themselves to the issue of sexuality. T |

Utopia - Possible in this LifeA utopian society is one that possess desirable qualities such as flawless social, political and moral aspects. This society can be a real place or one that is fictional, in most cases the latter is true. It is an aggregate that has the highest satisfaction level and in this civilization there is freedom for all. Thomas More was the discoverer of the Greek word Utopia which is translated to mean "no place," (Claeys & Sargent, 1999). Utopianism derived from the word Utopia which is define as social daydreaming (Claeys & Sargent, 1999). The western theory of utopia originated in the ancient world during the Greek Mythology era where legends of an earthly paradise lost to history, combined with the human desire to create or recreate an ideal society [Nat14]. Many agree that there once existed a perfect world with perfect people, but they argue the fact that it is now just an ancient place never to be seen again. So one may ask is it just a thing of the past or can the world get |

HIV and AIDSEpidemiology of HIV/AIDS Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) hijacks the natural defense system of body, and can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, or AIDS (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2014). Without the defense system, the body is not able to fight disease. In this paper, eradication of HIV will be discussed, along with the health determinants, and relation of these factors to the development of AIDS. The epidemiological triangle to HIV/AIDS will also be discussed. Then this paper will also focus on the responsibilities of community health nurse regarding primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention of this disease. Poem Summary - Harlem by Langston HughesI found the poem, "Harlem," by Langston Hughes to be extremely powerful, albeit short. Although this poem was written in 1951, while America was still largely segregated, I feel this poem can relate to the racial minority groups of any era. The name of this poem is after, "the New York neighborhood that became the center of the Harlem Renaissance." Harlem was a place that many African-Americans felt safe from discrimination. This poem is also applicable to any time you could ask, "what happens to a dream that will never come to fruition?" During the 1950's time period in history, African-Americans struggled immensely to be considered equals. They had as much ambition and |

Social Justice and DemocracySocial justice and democracy are two of the most discussed and argued concepts of political science, sociology, and philosophy. Democracy as we know of it today was not completely established until the 17th and 18th centuries during the Age of Enlightenment. During this time the Declaration of Independence followed by the U.S. Constitution were created. Democracy was meant for a structured government with a separation of powers, had basic civil rights for citizens, freedom of religion and the separation of church and state. The concept justice was created by the theories of John Rawls and Amartya Sen. Justice is composed of different parts: equal opportunities in education; gender and success; free markets; prevent poverty; and to provide aid to those less fortunate. Both these concepts go hand and hand with one another: if there is more social justice then there is more democracy and vice-versa. There are many theories for social justice and many different view points that are discu |

The River Merchant's Wife: A LetterThe poem "The River-Merchant's Wife: A Letter" is a dramatic monologue written in the form of a letter from the wife's point of view. It is a poignant plea from a wife to her husband, a merchant whose journey has lasted far too long for the wife's ease of mind. The poem honors faithfulness as the wife reflects on the development of their life together and expresses her growing sorrow as she anxiously awaits his return. The first stanza is based on the two partners in their youth: "While my hair was still cut straight across my forehead," suggests a picture of a little girl as the haircut is rather typical of younger ages. As the stanza progresses the image of children is reinforced when the poet repeats the word "playing" to describe what the girl is doing at the gate, as well as what the boy is doing. This repetition emphasizes the contented endless activity of children, almost as natural as nature referred to by "flowers" and "blue plums." This stanza establishes the two character |

Gamification and Game-Based Learning"Playing," goes far beyond the sandbox of childhood days, and has a place in the learning environments of all ages, and developmental levels. Neuroscience findings show that play contributes to brain development, in which neural pathways are influenced in their development through exploration, thinking, problem-solving, and expressive language. Educators around the world have responded to the benefits of play-based instruction, as a means to facilitate innovative activities, and real life situations. As a result, gamification and game-based, learning have become a revolution in 21st century education. Author and game designer, Jane McGonigal, produces and promotes gamification and game-based learning. She promotes them as vehicles to shape learners, to become constructivists and system thinkers; shifting students' mindsets, to mastery orientation. This type of learning opens up a whole world of curiosity, where students learn through play. They are better able to understand the conten |

Oversights of the Articles of ConfederationIn 1777, the Continental Congress drafted the original constitution, for the union of the 13 founding states. This was known as the Articles of Confederation. Led by John Dickinson, the Congress designed a loose confederation, rather than a strong and centralized nation. This document encompasses many significant terms, but also includes a few weaknesses. However, the problems that arose in the Articles, were addressed in the newly drafted Constitution. The Constitution was the following document drafted by the Constitutional Convention in 1789, which revitalized the previous constitution, by creating an entirely new one. The Articles of Confederation contained a very important political issue, a lack of an Executive Branch or President. This |

Interview on HomosexualityThis essay is on diversity in culture through the sociological perspective, and how it pertains to a minority group's sexual orientation. I have always wondered if being gay was a choice, or a change in a genetic makeup, or something as simple as an "accrued status." " Humans experience free will every day of their lives, but I'm not sure if sexual orientation "is a personal choice, or something that is genetically built in. It must be difficult being a minority a small city in Wyoming, where I live. I conducted an hour long interview, which gave me insight into this. It was not a choice for me to be a straight, white female; it was not a choice for my friend, Andrew, to be a white, homosexual, male. In my interview, I tried to get a glimpse into his daily life. My interview was conducted with my great childhood friend, Andrew, at approximately 6pm, November, 20th, 2014. Andrew, is of a diversified minority group, as a homosexual. He is a single, 27 year old homosexual, male. He resi |

WWI - Nationalism, Militarism, ImperialismThe First World War in history was due to three major causes: nationalism, militarism, and imperialism. The devotion to the country, also known as nationalism, started to raise the competitive rivalries among nations. Militarism, the development of armed forces, was used to defend the growing nation and through imperialism, which is the extending of the nation through the building of colonies. The tension among the strong nations of Europe was huge; however, the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir of the Austrian throne, in June of 1914 was the last crucial act that led to the war. Following the assassination of their throne's heir, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, who stood behind the murder of Franz Ferdinand. This activated the alliance systems and pulled one nation after another in the conflict (Danzer 580). There were two major alliances in Europe in the time of the First World War: The Triple Entente and The Triple Alliance. The Triple Entente, later known as |

Keep Cyclists Off the RoadPresident John F. Kennedy once said, "Nothing compares to the simple pleasure of riding you bike." Cyclists radiate their love for riding, whether the reason is leisure, physical activity, or competition. While I understand cycling connects these devotees to the outdoors and provides them exercise and even cheaper transportation, I do not agree with the law that states since both bicycles and cars are classified as vehicles, they each are supposed to be on the road. I realize the government has created road signs urging us all to "share the road," however, I feel like motorists having to cooperate with much smaller and slower modes of transportation is unrealistic and a safety concern to both parties. In writing this essay, I hope to convey some areas of concern from a motorists' point of view. One problem I have with cyclists stems from a type of bike rider who finds it acceptable to work out on the street among cars. Witnessing this type warm up for their strenuous, cross-suburb jo |

Personal Description of an Ideal HusbandEven though it is impossible to say what is going to be in the future, there are some places which we can lay the foundation of happiness. Marriage is the best example. A Chinese saying states that one of the worst things for a woman is marrying the wrong man. When I was a little child, I had dreams of marrying Leonardo DiCaprio, who is perfect in every way. Now that I am older, I would still like to marry Leonardo DiCaprio. However, I understand that it is not likely. I won't find a husband who looks like and behaves like him. Since the perfect husband is impossible to find, an ideal one may be easier to find. In this essay, I am describing my ideal husband, that I desire to be married in the future. The first quality that I look for, is definitely his physical appearance. Everyone says that, "Physical appearance is not important for me, |

Racism in the United StatesThe events surrounding Michael Brown's recent shooting in Ferguson, Missouri and the protests that followed, expose the ongoing racism in the United States. The grand jury's failure to indict Officer Darren Wilson, the white policeman responsible for Brown's death, incited a public outcry. Mainly riots by the city's predominantly-black residents, highlighted what some consider to be ongoing white advantage over blacks. Although blacks today are in some ways, living in better circumstances than they were 50 years ago, white Americans continue to enjoy significant advantages over black Americans. A primary source of strain between blacks and whites, is the immense wealth disparity. The median household income for blacks is $35,416 as of 2014, which is a modest improvement from 1965, when blacks earned a paltry $3,971 ($30,722 with inflation). However, this still falls short of whi |

The Cosby Show - Breaking StereotypesWhen I was a young girl, my family and I would all cram around the television set to watch The Cosby Show every Thursday evening. The Cosby show was a television sitcom about an upper middle-class African American family living in Brooklyn, New York. On each episode, the main character Heathcliff Huxtable (played by Bill Cosby) who was a doctor, and his wife Clair (a lawyer), taught their children a lesson or moral of some sort with comic relief. The Cosby Show influenced my family and me, because it showed America what a typical family was like. When the show came out in the eighties, it was a big hit because it was one of the first shows to view African Americans in a positive light. As a child, I grew up in a suburban neighborhood. My mother and my father were married with good jobs. When people found out where my family lived, they would look at us differently, I guess because a lot of people were not use to seeing African Americans living in the suburbs, even in the mid-nineties. |

Legality of Guns in America and Denmark"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." These are the words expressed in the US constitution from 1787. There is no doubt that we all should have the right to protect and defend ourselves and our loved ones, but where is the limit of how and with what we protect and defend ourselves? In this essay I will account for the positive and negative sides of the increasing use of firearms and the consequences of the increasing use of weapons in private. How much does it really mean for society and the common security that children are now at are now introduced to firearms in an earlier age? In Denmark, we think that U.S. has an extreme form of defense in private homes and that is probably because we do not see the same kind of extreme violent crime at home. In 1999, figures showed how big the problem already was at that time. Many had either been injured, killed or committed suicide by a firearm. Because of the recent history of terro |

Reasons to Outlaw CigarettesCigarette smoking involves the burning of tobacco to inhale its smoke. Tobacco smoke is taken into the mouth and then released using tobacco pipes, cigars or cigarettes. This practice is believed to have begun around 5000-3000 BC by Native Americans (Gately, 2007). In today's generation, smoking is regarded as an icon of style that is associated with prestige and fame. Nonetheless, people may smoke for several of reasons but it is their ultimate choice in the matter. However, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that about 443,000 Americans die of smoking-related deaths annually (CDC, 2005). In this regard, an urgent need for a ban on cigarette smoking is justified to reduce the rising mortality rates. Cigarette smoking harms both the smokers and non-smokers. The smoker's health is affected in several ways where their chances of developing cardiovascular diseases, cancer and mental health complications become high. Besides, |

Ethiopian Journalists and Balanced StoriesIn Ethiopia, if you publish what the government does not like, you will find yourself in Maekelawi. That is the name of a notorious prison in the capital which is home for torture and human rights abuse on prisoners. In its recent report, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has placed Ethiopia the third worst country in Africa for journalists. This report came about as the government arrested a group of political bloggers named "Zone 9 bloggers" on charges of terrorism. Recently, many award winning journalists have had their freedom confiscated to write and were put behind bars to hush their voices. These arrests show that Ethiopian writers are systematically silenced by the government through legislation, which is the key reason Ethiopia's democracy in not moving forward. Despite the government's claim that the legislation is useful for the nation's security, the newly introduced anti-terrorism law is being used to silence journalists from telling all sides of the story in the country. This law has a broad definition o |

Montresor and Fortunato in The Cask of AmontilladoEdgar Allan Poe's story "The Cask of Amontillado" introduces two protagonists, Montresor and Fortunato who were friends. The encounters the two men has was hatred and revenge that turned to murder on the behalf of Montresor. The encounter for Fortunato was the appearance of his naivety but he encountered a deadly consequence. Montresor was an angry but proud man who felt that what Fortunato did was wrong. He "Vowed revenge" (Poe 543) was made and the execution was implemented in the catacomb vault of his home. Montresor's deep hatred for Fortunato was due to Montresor's feeling of deprivation of being "rich, respected, admired, beloved, you are happy, as I once was" (Poe 545). He was also envious of Fortunato's being a wine connoisseur that re |

Krebs in Soldiers Home by Hemingway"Soldier's Home" is a short story written by Ernest Hemingway where a young man called Krebs is displayed as the protagonist. He is shown to be struggling as he has just returned back from the First World War. While at the war Krebs was exposed to both death and destruction in some of the most gruesome battles took place. The story shows Krebs parents trying to get him back to his normal everyday activities (Bernardo). Nevertheless, his perception of the world has been altered as part of him being away at war for a long period of time. Hemingway throughout the story shows Krebs as being lost and also shows him to be a human being, who has lost a lot. It is shown that Krebs has lost the ability to feel love. This is highlighted by Hemingway when Krebs is unable to lie to his mother, when she asks him whether or not he loves her anymore (Hemingway). This lost feeling of love is also further highlighted by Hemingway when he states in his story "Krebs looked at the bacon hardening on his p |

A Comparison between Augustus Waters and Romeo MontagueEvery person is unique. However, sometimes a person might meet someone who has a similar appearance and has had experiences which resemble his or her own. In the same way, books from different countries and eras may have similar protagonists. Such is in the case in John Green's well-known novel, The Fault In our Stars and in the critically acclaimed play Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare. In the two stories, Augustus Waters and Romeo Montague possess some similarities, as is demonstrated distinctly in their physical qualities, their reactions when they meet their lovers for the first time, and their tragic fate in the end of their respective stories. Physical qualities are a significant part of distinguishing one person from another. However, many people still have similarities in physicality. Comparing with two stories, both Augustus Waters and Romeo Montague are described as young boys. On page 9 in The Fault In Our Stars, when Hazel Grace, a sixteen-year-old girl |
