Imperfect Society in The Hunger GamesSuzanne Collins' novel, "The Hunger Games," is one of the most intriguing and contradictory works in recent literature. "The Hunger Games" tells the story of a young girl by the name of Katniss Everdeen who lives in a dystopian nation called Panem. Panem is split into twelve districts and run by a totalitarian government called the Capitol. The text depicts a visual of violence as Katniss states, "Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch" (Suzanne Collins pg. 18). However, the biblical parallels and allusions creates a change of reader's perspectives. Collins uses symbolism and characterization to emphasize the allegory in the novel as well as reveal the multiple definitions of poverty. Poverty can be defined as the state of being extremely poor. To demonstrate the Capitol's dominance, they require one boy and one girl chosen by lottery from each district to compete in "The Hunger Ga |

Learning from Our MistakesIf learning from your mistakes is a true thing, then the entire world is made up of mistakes. Everyone and everything around me is one big mistake. Last summer I started working for a law firm. I would start out doing simple secretary stuff, it was a walk in the park. Until the next month when Ms. Varnell came to my desk and told me that I would now be doing pleadings and litigation. I smiled and said okay as my stomach slowly sank into my feet. The past months that I had been there I had heard everyone complain so much about litigation and pleadings and how much they hated it. Carla, the old lady that was working in pleadings literally was the meanest lady ever. She never smiled, you guys, ever. She always had a mean look on her face when she was at work. When you asked her how her day was she would say how much she hated what she was working on and she would rather be at home with her cat. I never really spoke to her because I was petrified of her. So the next few weeks came and Ms |

Video Games and a Violent SocietyThe question of whether video games cause violence in the society has caused a controversial debate in the field of neuroscience and psychology ever since video games have appeared in the media industry. There had also been discussions regarding the idea that video games are rather just a correlation in the increase of aggression levels of some game players. There are however, several case studies, which make us question whether video games could really be the reason behind anti-social, violent behaviour of many by itself. There were various case studies in which young people who were thought to be affected by violent content of video games, who have committed an unforgiving crime of murder. One of the occurrences of an armed murder has taken place on April the 20th, 1999 in Colorado high school. In this fracas, two senior students of the Colorado high school have been captured on camera in act of murder with assault rifle in which 12 students and 1 teacher were killed. Shootings |

Piggy's Glasses in The Lord of the FliesIn William Golding's "Lord of the Flies," a group of young boys is stranded on an island after their plane crashes. Piggy, the outcast of the group, is the only one who wears glasses. When they arrive on the island, his glasses are shiny and clean. However, after a boy named Jack breaks the glasses, they start to get dirtier and dirtier the longer the boys are stranded. The glasses represent the influence of society on the boys. When the boys first arrive on the island, Piggy's glasses are clean. Piggy is constantly cleaning his glasses, especially when he's embarrassed. In one instance of glasses cleaning, the other boys are making fun of Piggy. Making fun of others is considered wrong in modern society. So the cleaning of the glasses is meant to represent Piggy trying to polish the wrong from the group. Society's influence on the boys st |

The Movies of Fritz Lang"Black as my soul." (158) was Lang's response to the interviewer's question when the interviewer Power asked him in 1973, "How do you take your coffee?" (158). This response is characteristic of the dark underlying tone that is prevalent in many Lang's films. According to Professor Polan, many Lang's films share a recurring theme - destiny, a destiny which is typically random and uncaring. In a world that is inherently corrupt and inhospitable, it almost seems as if characters were destined to find themselves entrapped in unwanted and frequently doomed situations. While watching Lang's films, the contemporary viewers, who were living through the Great Depression, are naturally inclined to ask themselves: are our lives bounded by fate, which is dictated by our savage environment, or do we have the freedom and ability to make decisions that are not predetermined by any prior occurrences? Suppose we do have free will, how can we exercise it? In his film, The Woman in t |

Surface Ocean FertilizationAbstract Surface ocean fertilization can be a natural process by which soluble iron is introduced into the oceans surfaces. One of these natural processes occurs through volcanic eruptions that emit volcanic ash enriched with iron into the atmosphere which eventually makes it way to the oceans. Phytoplankton become abundant when an excess amount of iron is introduced to the oceans surfaces, the phytoplankton is photosynthetic in nature use carbon dioxide in order to undergo photosynthesis. The carbon dioxide is gained through the atmosphere, lowering carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. There is speculation that iron fertilization if large enough in size such as a volcanic eruption creates a balance with the excess carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere. Introduction During the process of a volcanic eruption multiple gases and particle are released into the environment one of which is known as volcanic ash. This volcanic ash is enriched with iron; this ash travels a great amoun |

Colleges and Community ServiceThe majority of high schools in the United States have a graduation requirement consisting of completing 60 hours of community service. I didn't have to complete that requirement when I graduated from high school. Many people say I am fortunate for that. However, I think that doing community service would have been fun and beneficial, not only to the society, but also for yourself, since you meet new people and learn new things about your society. Dave Eggers, discusses in his article, "Serve or Fail"," that community service should be obligatory to college students. In college, community service is not a graduation requirement, yet I agree with Eggers and believe it should be. I agree with Egger's point when he mentions that college students are the ones that have the time to help those around them, unlike high school students who have other responsibilities such as classes every day of the week from Mondays to Fridays from eight to around three o' clock. Whereas, college students have different schedules, some of them go two to three days a week others go five times a week but with shorter hours or longer breaks between classes in which com |

Summary of Hamlet Act 1When revenge becomes a topic in literature it brings large conflicts among characters, forming a question as to whether or not revenge is justified or if it is a means of justice. In the play, "Hamlet," hostility and revenge become the main drive for characters that develop growing issues with other characters. Act one of "Hamlet" introduces these central conflicts of the play, each having to do with a character's desire for revenge upon another character. These negative mindsets serve to reveal the main characters' antagonistic intentions and excessively prideful personalities which largely contribute to the central theme of "Hamlet." The beginning of act one introduces the theme of revenge, already giving purpose and conflicts among the characters living in Denmark. The play begins with three characters guarding Elsinore. A scholar named Horatio explains to the guards the purpose of their job, saying that their previous king, King Hamlet, was "pri |

Definitions of Race and Ethnicity1. The traditional definition of race and ethnicity is linked to biological and sociological factors. Race refers to a person's physical appearance, such as skin color, eye color, hair color, bone structure and etc. Ethnicity, on the other hand, relates to cultural factors such as nationality, culture, ancestry, language and beliefs (Vxpilot). There are various differences in race and ethnicity. To start, ethnicity is a population of human beings whose members identify with each other, on the basis of a common ancestry. Ethnicity shows the cultural traits and the shared group history. Some ethnic groups also share linguistic or religious traits, while others share a common group history but not a common language or religion. Typically, if people believe they descend from a particular group, and they want to be associated with that group, then they are in fact members of that group. Ethnic groups distinguish themselves differently from one time period to another. They typically seek to |

Poverty and Social ClassesFunctionalist believe that inequality is essential for society to function properly, (Carl, 2013, p. 31). Jobs that are rewarded with higher pay are the ones with the rarest skills. Conflict theorist believe that being born into a wealthy family helps open up doors that would otherwise be closed. Wealthy families get better quality of education and have more of an opportunity for higher-education, where again families that are of lower social class cannot always afford the higher-education. They also believe that the less you get paid the less important your job it. What about soldiers and school teachers? They do not get paid as much as a heart surgeon or pediatric surgeon, but their job is still extremely important. Why are professional athletes paid millions of dollars for entertainment, but a soldier can barely afford to feed his/her family? Symbolic interactionist believe that by blaming the problem on the victim, as a society we are not looking at the whole picture like lack of |

The Defense Budget of the United StatesNow that the United States' debt has reached $18 trillion, politicians and financial experts have been debating on how what will the best way to cut the federal budget and address the deficit crisis. Some argue that it has become too large and bloated in recent years, especially as the United States is no longer being challenged by any superpower as it was by Soviet Russia during the Cold War. Looking at the importance of National Security, others say cuts should come from elsewhere in the national budget. A main focus has moved to our defense budget. Since 2001, the base defense budget has soared from $287 billion to $530 billion (Plumer). Because of these numbers, our current questioning asks, are cuts to the defense budget necessary? Those who claim it is necessary to make cuts in the defense budget will say we can still be a superpower with the reductions. One of the most well known advocates of this idea is the highly decorated, former United States Presidential election front-r |

Overview of the American Civil WarAlthough it occurred over a hundred years ago, the Civil War has left an issue that has created grave controversy. This problem that arose both during and after the Civil War, was whether or not the American Civil War was actually a civil war. The dictionary definition of a civil war is: a war within one country where two or more factions fight for control of the government. Some people argue that the Civil War, fought between 1861 and 1865, was not an actual civil war at all. Nevertheless, the American Civil War was rightfully named, and was indeed a civil war. The Civil War was in fact a civil war for multiple reasons. To begin with, the eleven states that declared themselves a new nation claimed to have seceded. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas, and Tennessee all stated that they were no longer part of the Union, and proclaimed themselves to be the Confederate States of America. However, secession is illegal according to |

From what I have read/from what I have always known about phobias is that the terror they experience is mechanical, unreasonable, nerve-wrecking and overwhelming. How does the five perspectives in psychology relate to people with phobias? Of course, everything happens for a reason. There will always be a reason behind everything that happens/will happen to us. Jackie Robinson - Greatest Baseball PlayerThe best baseball player that ever lived is Jackie Robinson. This is because not only was Jackie an amazing baseball player, he also changed the path of baseball and many other sports. Jackie broke the color line in baseball by being signed by the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. Many years before this he had been playing in the Negro leagues. Robinson was one of the best baseball players in the league at his time. He played in the majors for 10 years. The thing that makes him so good is his ability to be a utility player. Jackie played 1st, 2nd, 3rd and left field during his career. Robinson's peak came a little late, as he didn't reach the majors until he was 28 due to being drafted for the war and segregation. He didn't really come into his own until 1949 when he batted .342 and earned MVP. Let's take a look at Albert Pujols, a 3 time national league MVP and a Hall of Fame candidate. Pujols was a great hitter, but not a great base runner, whereas Robinson did almost everything. He was know |

National Honor Society - Leadership SkillsIt is the end of my junior year. Classes are half empty; students are half there, both metaphorically and literally. Everything is coming to a close, but for me, it is the beginning. The National Honor Society officer elections are today. I entered the classroom, cast my vote, and waited. After all of the votes had been cast and counted, I was declared the next president of the National Honor Society. I never envisioned myself leading a group, but one of the first steps included taking the initiative. I had a concept of what it meant to be a leader and the duties it entailed, but as the year passed, I learned what makes a real leader. I believed that a leader provides the ideas, directs others, and witnesses the results. I quickly reali |

The Picture of Dorian Gray - BeautyIn, "The Picture of Dorian Gray," the main character Dorian acquires a thirst for youth that eventually dominates his life. In Having a flattering outer appearance places a person a pedestal, and because of this mindset, obsession as a means to perfections is justifiable. However, what we fail to put into consideration, is that beauty is suffocating. Beauty is a distraction to other important aspects of life, and it's everlasting role in the world makes it a recurring part of life. As Dorian's character develops, the reader sees that beauty is suffocating. Throughout the novel, Wilde manifests references to popular figures in mythology, and that of Narcissus particularly matches Dorian's personality. In summary, Narcissus, a gorgeous, innocent young man who one day stands by a river and sees his reflection for the first time, drowns because he has been gazing so intently at his image. Coincidentally enough, Dorian also finds himself one day inspecting his portrait for the first time |

Memoirs Of A Geisha - Summary and CritiqueMemoirs of a Geisha, published in 1977, is a historical novel written by Arthur Golden. He had received a degree in art history, specializing in Japanese art. Therefore, he was capable of producing a beautifully written novel about a geisha in Japan during the times of before and after World War II. A geisha is basically a Japanese woman who has been trained to become a professional singer and or dancer to entertain men at parties, banquets, or festivals. These women would be known as "artists," as that is where the term derived from "gei," meaning "arts" and "sha" meaning "person." The novel is narrated from the point of view of Sayuri Nitta, a retired geisha, whom the author had interviewed. Furthermore, as for the purpose of this book, the author states that, "There may well be no better record of the strange life of a geisha than the one Sayuri offers" (2). The setting of the novel was in a popular geisha district of Gion in Kyoto, and we are given in great detail throughout t |

The First People - Susan PointAs time passes quickly, distance begins to separate us, and relationships are lost. We are still woven together in a complex tapestry, like a river and it's tributaries. Even if our encounters are fleeting or endured, they still shape who we become. We often forget how powerful and primal, our bonds are. Although we may not be blood, our shared experiences can bind us to each other. Susan Point's carving, "The First People," shows us that although time and space may separate us, we are all connected. The connections between us are shown in this intricately carved work of art, commissioned by the Seattle Art Museum in 2008. It is comprised of red and yellow cedar squares, that have been accented with paint in dark tones of chocolate brown, mahogany, and black with a greenish hue. They are joined togeth |

Setting and Character Development in Short StoriesSetting is where and when a story takes place, and it can often reflect the situations the characters are experiencing by reinforcing their emotions. In, "The Story of an Hour," by Kate Chopin, the setting is used to help further develop and reflect the main character's struggles. There are two different settings in this short story, one of which is in the public, downstairs in Mrs. Mallard's home. The other is upstairs in confinement, which allows the story to truly unfold. Without the use of the setting in, "The Story of an Hour," Louise Mallard's revelation of her oppression and conclusion to her husbands death would not have transpired the way it did. "Hills like White Elephants," by Ernest Hemmingway, is set in a train station in Spain. This short story also has the double setting feature; on their side of the tracks there is arid dry land, and barren. On the opposite side of the tracks there is fertile, vegetated land. Both of these opposing setting |

The Growth MindsetHow a person thinks from childhood on can drastically alter their future. The right mindset may not always be tangible but it is a key factor to success. Everyone will go through failures in their lives, having the right attitude and maintaining a positive mindset through adversity is what will make or break you. A fixed mindset is the idea that people believe their basic qualities, like their cleverness or capability is set in stone, unchangeable. A growth mindset is the idea that people believe their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work. A growth mindset is a key factor to becoming a better student, athlete, worker, and in general a better person. This mindset will lead you to achieve goals, and gain abilities which previously were thought to be unattainable. Many famous men and women in life have battled through adversity and come out triumphant. Men like Walt Disney, Steve Jobs, and Thomas Edison were once told they were stupid, unoriginal, and would never make it. If these men did not have a growth mi |

Fostering Children's LearningParents often feel that they need to have intelligent and talented children, in order for them to succeed. This pressure comes from the society, and the culture within which we live. People realize that higher levels of education are needed to obtain occupations with fair salaries. This is highlighted within Western civilization, as it is throughout the mass media. A perfect example would be the slogans used by several colleges and universities like, "Get the career you have always dreamed of," or similar sentiment, explaining that education leads to one's future success. It is all about comparisons between individuals and the idea of competition. Students and co-workers need to be motivated and encouraged, and comparisons will help them to outperform their counterparts. Olaudah Equiano - Understanding FreedomWhile reading "The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano," it came to mind exactly how much I take my freedom for granted. On the other hand, unlike Olaudah Equino, I have nothing to compare it to, for I know nothing but freedom - the freedom to read, write, vote, practice the religion of my choice, participate in any function open to the public, and the right to voice my opinion. But Ohaudah Equino can compare because he experiences both bondage as well as freedom. Equino was in fact born a free man, but was soon enslaved by his fellow Africans, and soon after that the by the Europeans as well. I can only imagine that freedom to Equino was cherished a bit more than my freedoms; after all he experienced both African slavery, as well as American slavery, not to in any way be considered compatible to one another.
