Man with a Movie Camera - Directed by Dziga Vertov

Dziga Vertov's Man with a Movie Camera was influenced by the wars in the early 1900s that paved the way for a Bolshevik culture rooted in the principles of communism. For example, Russia's Soviet Montage Era in the 1920s dissuaded producers from the conventional ways of making films and encouraged the development of experimental filming techniques. Dziga Vertov's Man with a Movie Camera contained many elements drawing from the Soviet Montage Era. The film came out in 1929 and was heavily influenced by the historical events that pre-dated it during the early 1900s. The film made numerous references to the backward nature of Russia and a desire to catch up with to Western countries. At the time, Russia lagged economically behind European countries as a direct result of World War I from 1914-1918 and the Russian Civil War from 1917-1922. The Russian provisional government was put into place after the long Tsarist regime in 1917, but was ousted after only eight months, once the Bolsheviks

Ambition and Conscience in Hamlet

"Hamlet," by William Shakespeare, is one of the most widely read dramatic works of the English language. It has gained critical acclaim as a great classical work of literature and has appeared within multiple interpretations, making Hamlet an extremely provocative story transcending cultural significance and appeal through generations. Shakespeare's use of symbolic ideologies have been further explored and analyzed through the perspectives of Trevor McDonald, and I have formed my own opinions in relation to the ideas of conflict between human ambition and conscience, and the innate human need of finding truth and meaning. Through the conventions of this revenge tragedy, philosophical notions and emotional turmoil are presented to hence create meaning and value to the reading audience. In a sense, Hamlet highlights the conflict between ambition and conscience to therefore make present the individuals internal struggle. Hamlet is "duty bound to avenge his fathers death"- as s

Creon in Antigone and Oedipus Rex

Creon serves two different roles in both plays. He is the King of Thebes in Antigone and the brother-in-law to Oedipus in Oedipus the King also known as Oedipus Rex. Creon did not receive the title of "King" until the end of Oedipus the King. He shows a rise and fall in his power from both plays. In Oedipus the King, Creon was known to be a respectable and compassionate man. His personality and behavior changes in Antigone as he becomes sparingly disrespectful. His actions should make you wonder if he has learned anything from Oedipus the King. Accusations and false judgment play a huge role in how Creon's life changed dramatically at the end of Antigone. All the major flaws that Creon develops is the reason for his tragedy. Creon is very cocky and allows power get in the way of family and he forgets the real meaning of being a king. He does not know how to deal with his own conflicts in a hasty manner, so he does what he wants to do without any advice or help from anyone. In

History of the Viking Invasions

The Vikings main role was to increase their raids on the continent, and since they were opportunists with wisdom it would not have been a hard feat. Because of the civil war and the political confusion that occurred in Northern Europe, the vikings were able to raid the continent easily. Somehow the Vikings knew which areas were easier to raid and which areas had more profit for them. The raids that the Vikings pursued were not supported by the pagan kings of Scandinavia, where a majority of their raids took place, and were acts of piracy that eventually shifted over time. The Vikings had remarkable sailing skills and were able to use those skills to their advantages, unlike the Germans before them. They were also lucky to have larger ships which

The Wagner Act of 1935

Introduction The Wagner Act was set up by the federal government in 1935 as a regulator, as well as the final arbitrator of labor relations in the United States. It was sponsored by Robert Wagner, a Democrat Senator of New York. When it was constituted, it established the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), with the power to safeguard the rights of most workers. In this regard, workers were in a position of organizing their own unions thereby having the power of collective bargaining. Additionally, the Act disallowed employers from getting involved in unfair labor practices like discriminating or firing workers involved in the unions. History of the Wagner Act Following the New Deal, the Franklin Roosevelt, the President of the United States, together with his Labor Secretary, Frances Perkins, were instrumental in leading a progressive middle course when it came to labor relations. As a matter of fact, they were of the view that if proper laws as well as policies were established

Death in the Poetry of Emily Dickinson

The two poems by Emily Dickinson, "I Heard a Fly Buzz – When I Died" and "Because I Could Not Stop for Death," revolve around the theme of dying. Though the two do centralize themselves around death they both have slightly different messages or beliefs about what is to come after passing on. By discussing each of the poems and contemplating their meanings, the reader should have a better understanding of the message Dickinson is trying to send to her audience and a much greater aspect of what could be waiting for us after we die. When Dickinson writes in her first line, "I heard a fly buzz - when I died" (888); it grasps the reader's attention by describing the moment of her death. After reading the first stanza the reader can almost hear or sense the feeling of the fly buzzing in such a still and quiet room. The contrasting sounds of the noisy fly and the stillness of the air draw the reader deeper into the poem. The image created by this contrast is l

Leading Developments of the Modern American Empire

The Modern American Empire was not an easy task to develop; it was accomplished through leaders taking prominent influence in expanding communication, trade, and territory to further develop our Nation. It took a journey though the annexation of Hawaii, Alaska, and the victory of the Spanish- American War. American influence dating back to the mid 1800's, when William Seward succeeded in acquiring the Alaskan state from Russia claiming it a part of America, started the rise to become a modern American empire (Purchase of Alaska). While practically doubling the land with the purchase of Alaska the United States it also started a revolutionary period that furthered the development of communication and transportation; thus causing the production rates to massively be exceeded

Concepts of Time Management

The rest of the college life that give us a lot of extra time to manage our time by ourselves. That I never imagine when I studied in high school. It means that we should have more sense of responsibility to enrich the time with the value activities, because some extracurricular activities play an important role for our all-round development. So time management is a very important skill in the college life. Then we can complete the assignments and manage the rest of college effectively. Time management is a college skill that help student finish their work and achieve the goal. So we have to know what we exactly want. The goal that helps you remind why you're going through such hard working process. When you work for yourself, it's easy to spend a whole day and accomplish nothing of value. This always happens when you are not clear about what it is your goal. Every student have the problem about why they always don't have enough time to complete the assignment. That is also relating

The Great Gatsby - Gatsby and Myrtle

In the novel by F. S. Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, a common motif is partying. There are multiple parties set up by Gatsby and one that we know of by Myrtle. Similarly, their parties are gaudy and include the prohibited substance, alcohol. However, there are great differences between the two as told by Nick, our narrator. Nick is a reliable source, being a guest at both venues and he tells us with great detail guests, atmosphere and how the hosts behave. This is a true testament that money cannot buy sophistication. When Nick is invited to Tom and Myrtle's love nest in New York, an impromptu party is held. Myrtle calls up the neighbors as well as her sister Catherine, all who show up on a whim's notice. There is of course, liquor, and Myrtle is no stranger to drinking. Myrtle craves the attention she gets, and even dismisses Mrs. McKee's comment about her dress, declaring "oh this old thing", though we really know she is relishing the attention because she goes on to change her clothes at one point, fishing for more compliments no doubt. Her parties ar

Hypocrisy-Induced Dissonance

Abstract Through hypocrisy-induced dissonance, people are less likely to engage in certain activities or will respond differently in certain situations once they are made aware of their own hypocrisy. Two studies, one studying road rage and one studying smoking, used the hypocrisy paradigm in order to make participants aware of their own hypocrisy and encouraging them to change their behavior. Participants in the hypocrisy induced road rage study cut someone off before being cut off themselves. Participants realize they themselves have no ill intent when cutting someone off and are able to forgive others when they are cutoff. Smokers with high self-esteem come to realize they are giving advice and facts that they themselves are not adhering to and move towards quitting their smoking habits. Hypocrisy Induction Practice what you preach. That is phrase that is constantly thrown around at those we are accusing of being a hypocrite. Is it not hypocritical to tell someone to practice what

Class Speech - Alzheimers Disease

"Take a man's memories and you take all of him. Destroy him and he wouldn't remember." – Mark Lawrence Memories are a "souvenir" to everything we do; acting as an activating button that helps us remember visual images such as the faces of family members and friends and basic kinds of information such as walking and swimming, which could last a lifetime. Much of what is stored in our memory was stored there without much effort on our part. Sometimes it takes only a visual image, a sound or an odor to bring back or retrieve memory. Can our memories be taken away? Yes, perhaps. Our brains are just functioning to a certain protocol and once the path of work is being interrupted, its systematic flow will create a disoriented cycle. There are a lot of factors that create a flaw in our memory. Our lifestyle determines our physical body's outcome. As we grow old, memory deteriorates and in normal cases, it is part of human development. Almost everyone will experience occasi

Meanings and Expressions of Love

"Love" a word easy to spell, difficult to define and nearly impossible to live without it. Love has several related, but distinct meanings depending on the context. It is can be used to describe a plethora of issues like feelings, emotions, attraction, attachments, kindness, compassion, affection, friendship, and romance. Humans express love by their actions and experience love through feeling. The exact definition of love can be gotten only in a particular context. Most attempts to give a general definition to love only make it elusive. This paper is about my fascination in defining love from different perspectives. The origin of love dated some 1.8 million years ago (Fuentes 2002). Love evolves out of human need to bond with one another so as to facilitate survival and reproduction (Buss 1988a; Fisher 1998). The ability of humans to survive and thrive is made possible by being attached to one another. Bowlby

The Samurai Philosophy

Samurai culture and behaviors were significantly developed during the warring years from the 14th to 15th century, as well as in the Tokugawa era afterwards. Two well known works, "The Book of Five Rings" by Miyamoto Musashi, and "Hagakure," written by Yamamoto Tsunetomo, both consist of profound ideology about being samurai. However, the philosophies in these two books vary considerably as they focus on different aspects of the Samurai culture. In the Book of Five Rings, Miyamoto emphasizes tactics of duels and battle, and concentrates on the importance of winning a battle against opponents; however, in Hagakure, Yamamoto spends more time explaining the beauty of an honorable death and the importance of loyalty to a master. The former appears to be more strategic and practical, while the latter expresses an ideal and aesthetic sense. This may result from the difference between the warring era and the Tokugawa era. Miyamoto Musashi focuses more on strategy because he was nurtured in an

The Kidnapping of Baby Lindbergh

"Anne, they have stolen our baby." (Meachum, 72), are the beginning words to a crime that shocked America. The Lindbergh Kidnapping was the "crime of the century" ("Lindbergh"), in the 1930s. This case took over four years to solve and it brought citizens together like nothing else of its kind had done before. Charles Lindbergh was an extraordinary pilot, but he had many other projects going on in his early life. An example of one of Lindbergh's aviation projects was in 1928, Lindbergh had his last flight in the Spirit of St. Louis. He flew from Lambert Field to Bolling Field, Washington, D.C. The total time he flew in the Spirit of St. Louis was, 789 hours and 28 minutes ("Connecting"). Charles always had one thing he could come back to, his passion for aviation. One of the many non-aviation projects Lindbergh was a part of, was the Perfusion Pump.

Concert Review - Amritha Murali

I watched the Carnatic music concert by Amritha Murali on Youtube. The concert was more quiet for the most part in my opinion. It never got loud like some of the orchestra symphonies did that we watched in class. It was a smaller concert with a small ensemble; one woman singer, a drummer, violinist, someone playing a chordophone, and someone playing a membranophone. This ensemble created a lighter sound. Occasionally the drum would become more prominent and at the end of the songs the violinist would play a soft melody. There was definitely a strong rhythm apparent by the larger drum for most of the concert. Also, the beats seemed to be organized into a meter of some sort for the most part. This steady beat and meter made me want to dance. There were times during the concert where I found myself imagining a belly dancer with the bells around their waist dancing to the music and it made me dance a little in my chair. As for syncopation, there was none in this concert. The instruments se

The Nazis and a Pure Aryan Race

Hitler seize the power over Germany in 1933 with the help of the German Conservatism and his beliefs. Hitler had many ideas that would have helped him turn Germany into a major power but one of his main idea was to create a 'pure Aryan race. In his eyes, 'pure aryan' were the only ones who could have helped Germany to achieve greater success. That meant eliminating every other threat which included Jews, gypsies, blacks, old and the disabled. Hitler believed that the Disabled should be eliminated as they were not mentally and physical prepared and they were viewed as burden on the society. During the Hitler era, disabled Germans were treated similar to how the Jews, Gypsies and black were treated as countless number of disabled lost t

Ray Charles - Father of Soul

Often referred to as the "Father of Soul", Ray Charles Robinson is considered to be one of the most influential pioneers of soul music during the 1950's due to his unique jazzy music style that incorporated rhythm and blues as well as gospel. Ray Charles was most notably known for his popular hit singles such as "Hit the Road Jack", but also for his blind condition. During his time recording for Atlantic Records, the gospel style and sound he had become familiar with at church growing up found a way into his music and the barriers between secular and sacred music were taken down. The influences and motivations that shaped Ray Charles' career and him as a person were based upon creating what he considered was soul music. Born on September 23, 1930, Ray Charles had a difficult childhood becoming fully blind at the age of seven. Ray Charles first learned to play several instruments at the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind in St. Augustine. Soon after his mother

Biography of Maya Angelou

From the tender age of three, Marguerite had to endure the hardships of an unstable home, racism, and trauma. After their parents divorce, Marguerite and her brother Bailey were sent to live with their strict grandmother and their uncle Willie in Stamps, Arkansas. They lived in the back of the store which was owned and operated by their grandmother. During that time Maya learned the importance of education, however, her life in Stamps was influenced by the continuous racism and discrimination. In Maya Angelou's I know why the caged birds sing, the authors purpose was to show how marguerites strength of character helped her overcome her tragic encounter with sexual molestation and racism. To Marguerite, the southern life was hard but she adjusted to the routine quickly. Maya felt insecure because everybody was calling her ugly while they called her brother Bailey, handsome and funny. Since Maya lived in the black part of stamps for a while, she didn't believe that white people were real. Due to segregation black people were not allowed to go to the white people part of town. When white

Notes on Action Research Project

The goal of this section is to combine information about the setting of the action research project and the story behind the project into a smooth narrative that gets the reader engaged in your work's context; the critical question is also introduced here. This section is usually about three to five pages long. The reader should have a good idea what the paper is about before finishing the first page. In the introduction, be cognizant of the following: • Context. It is important to communicate to the reader a clear picture of the overall context of your AR project. The way you write the beginning of your paper lays the foundation (weak or strong) for the credibility and trustworthiness of your results and conclusions. • Use storytelling. Instead of telling about your setting, illustrate it for the reader using stories and anecdotes taken from your notes, reflections, and data. Introduce major players in your analysis and results. • Include active and layered descripti

Modern World Technology

In today's world, human life is associated with a several types of technology. No matter where you look, at home, in the office, in the car, on the street, the computers and household appliances, mobile phones, devices for the vehicles as well as many other fancy devices are surrounding us to help us to perform various things and thereby making our daily life much easier. With all the advance technology available today, technology has become a necessary aspect of a modern man. Technology is a necessary companion of a modern man. Today people cannot imagine the life without technology. For example, when we come home the first thing that we do are turning on a computer, connecting to the Internet, checking our emails before we go meet and talk to our family. For example when I was in the middle school and I first got my video game, as soon as came from the school, I threw my backpack on the sofa, went to my room, I turned my Play Station on and started playing the video game. Patriarchal Figures - Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man

21. Choose a novel or play that depicts a conflict between a parent (or a parental figure) and a son or daughter. Write an essay in which you analyze the sources of the conflict and explain how the conflict contributes to the meaning of the work. Avoid plot summary. In A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, James Joyce follows the mental and physical maturation of Stephen Dedalus. The dawn of Stephen's psychological and intellectual enlightenment is seen especially in the resolution of conflicts revolving around the cultural and societal values by which the novel's authority figures judge the protagonist. Stephen's introspective and psychoanalytical approach toward his patriarchal roots in religion, patriotism, and familial relations progressively guides him toward the novel's conclusion, which signifies an illumination of Stephen's mind and Joyce's own attempts at introspection through his art. Throughout Portrait, Joyce develops a myriad of patriarchal roles and authority figur

Battle Royal by Ralph Ellison

"Battle Royal," by Ralph Ellison, tells the story of a young black man during segregation who struggles to discover his identity. The story begins with the narrator who remembers the advice that his dying grandfather gave to his son (the narrator's father) and his remembrance of a cruel betrayal that confirms the grandfather's advice. The grandfather divulges to his son how he has survived in the white man's world and counsels his son to agree with what the white man says and always answer with a compliant attitude. The narrator is then invited to give his high school graduation speech to leaders of his town, but the narrator arrives at the hotel and he is forced to fight a blindfolded "battle royal" with other young black men in front of white men. He finally gets to present his speech after fighting in the battle, but the drunken town leaders barely listen. At the close of his speech, the narrator is given a fine briefcase and a scholarship to a black college. In the story the narrator is in search for his identity during a period where black men were still look down upon. Battle Royal, is mainly a description of the Afri

Book Banning - Their Eyes Were Watching God

High schools are full of teenagers who are searching for their identity and self-expression. Despite its profound position, the novel Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston has been challenged of its place in high school student's education by parents and educational groups. Their main argument implied that the novel contained sexual explicitness, obscenity, racial remarks and vulgar reasons as such. However, Their Eyes were Watching God should contain its place in the high school English curriculum because of two reasons: its significance in American History and the moral of love and self-expression. First, this book withholds too many important factors in American history to be left out. Hurston uses various quotes in order to express the hardships of African-Americans during the age of slavery. For example, Nanny explains to Janie how Leafy (Nanny's daughter) was raped by white men and their masters. "Dat school teacher had done hid her in de woods all night long,

Research Sources - World War II

"Adolf Hitler." History.com. A&E Television Networks. Web. 9 Feb. 2015. . A reliable source about militaristic info is History.com. It is a very knowledgeable website with in-depth research into all thing history, especially about the wars. From the source, I used the info about Hitler to find out that he was one of the most powerful and infamous dictators of the 20th century, if not of all time. Hitler rose to power in the National Socialist German Workers Party and quickly rose up the ranks from messenger to dictator in 1933 when he took over the German government. During his rule, Hitler established concentration camps in which he brought Jews, handicaps, homosexuals, elders, and Christians to kill. He ended up killing around 6 million of these people before he committed suicide. Hitler's attack on Poland was one of the main causes for starting World War 2 because of the ally system. Medicare and the Aging Population

Medicare, a program run by the government to provide medical insurance for the elderly has become a problem for low-income seniors. Medicare, is granted to many seniors overtime is only given to those who meet specific criteria. Our population is expanding everyday and living longer. Medicare has become too expensive and is leading seniors to have to pay closer attention to their health. The low surplus of doctors and affordable Medicare is putting the elderly lives on the line. They fear this new plan will fail. I believe that that the new healthcare plan should be able to grant the elderly more access to medical assistance, such as medical procedures, doctors, medications, and affordable Medicare. Hospitals need to work together with doctors to make sure that seniors are getting their medical needs met. In his article "Obama Will Repeal Medicare," Dick Morris argues that the new health care plan should provide proper support and care that the elderly deserve"(1). I to
