Poem Analysis - Song to Myself

Although defined differently by many, poetry can be viewed as a form of "literature that evokes a concentrated imaginative awareness of experience or a specific emotional response through language chosen and arranged for its meaning, sound, and rhythm." (Britannica poetry) Poetry is a vast subject that dates back to thousands of years. In writing poetry, authors often incorporate or manipulate syntax, sound scheme, meter, and more to invoke certain aesthetics and meaning. One poet who became world renowned was Walt Whitman. Whitman broke the boundaries of poetic form and took a very personal style in writing his poetry. One of such works that became eminent was his "Song to Myself", in which Whitman discusses a wide range of topics, all the while using many different stylistic devices. In an effort to invoke certain meaning and sentiment, Walt Whitman employs devices such as free verse, repetition, and occasional reference to his beloved country in his work "So

Literature and Defying Female Gender Roles

The notion of femininity, along with the idea of the female gender role, has substantially changed in the last century. During the early twentieth century, women were subjected to stay within household and were apart of society to clean, raise children, and prepare meals for their families. Any woman noticed pushing the domestic convention of the period was harshly ridiculed and always reminded of her inferiority within the "man's world". The twentieth century was a century dominated by a patriarchal society; women were viewed as a human subtype and their voices were disregarded and unheard. The term "feminism" is defined as females receiving the same societal opportunities and treatment as men. Although women's rights movements took force during the latter half of the twentieth century, women still face the sad reality of unequal political, economical, and social treatment. Feminism took full force during the twentieth century through the use of film, music, and

Hammurabi and Ben Zhao

Compare and discuss how gendered norms are constructed in the Hammurabi's code on domestic life with how they are constructed in Ben Zhao's instruction manual for women. Mesopotamia means the Land between the Rivers, which are the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers. After the collapsing of Sargon's empire, a conqueror named Babylionian Hammurabi, who reigned from 1792 BC to 1750 BC. He then improved on Sargon's administrative techniques by relying on centralized bureaucratic rule and regular taxation rather than on suppression and plunder. He developed a series of codes called Hammurabi's codes. The gendered norms were discussed clearly in the Hammurabi's codes that women were respected for who they were and did not have to fight to gain the rights they had. Hammurabi's Code contained laws, which respected the rights of women. The society during Babylonian was developed base these series of codes. Many of the codes within Hammurabi's Code favor the men of the society, though many of them spe

Steroids and PEDs in Sports

In professional sports, the past 15 years have been tainted by our athlete's use of performance enhancing drugs. The injection of steroids and other PEDs, performance-enhancing drugs, has newly become the most controversial topic of todays sports. Competition has become so severe that it is now common for athletes to ingest PED's in order to gain an advantage over their peers. Everybody associated with this issue agrees that these enhancers are dangerous and not healthy for athletes to use. The argument lies in the allowance of professional athletes to use performance-enhancing drugs in their respective sports. Due to technological advances, these drugs have become very accessible and available to even young high school athletes. According to the Associated Press of The New York Post, "In a confidential 2013 survey of 3,705 high school students, being released Wednesday by the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, 11 percent reported using synthetic HGH at least once- up from about 5

The Evolution of Gospel Music

Abstract This monograph attempts to know the origin of the term Gospel, the origins, the Gospel socio-cultural, gender issues and the impact of Gospel Music on other genres of secular music. The influence of gospel music on modern music and its exponents is discussed. A short list of singers and Christian music bands, Christian record labels and companies like Canzion Group and Kindred Productions and secular projects supported by Christians such as Universal Music and important events of international awards to contemporary gospel music have also been focused upon. Introduction The gospel, spiritual music or gospel music, music emerged in African-American churches in the eighteenth century. It became popular during the 1930's and turned out to be different from traditional music like Christian hymns (Collins 2000: 23-25). Godspell is a Castilian word that literally translates as History of God. However, it can also be translated as Announcing the History of God. This form of singi

How Sergio Leone Change the West

In 1964, Italian director, Sergio Leone (a relative unknown in America) released the film, A Fistful of Dollars (1964), which broke Italian box office records (Jameson 2009). After the success of the film in Italy, the American film company, United Artists purchased the rights to the film and released it in the United States in 1967. At the time of its release, the golden age of the Western genre seemed to be coming to an end (Prince 2014). Sergio Leone and A Fistful of Dollars (1964), as well as the two sequels that would follow breathed new life into the Western genre, created the sub-genre Spaghetti Western, and would change the face of Western cinema forever. Before we continue, in order to prevent confusion we will be splitting Western cinema into two categories, the Modern and Classical. The Modern, or revisionist Western are films made after 1964 (Dollars Trilogy (1964-66), The Wild Bunch (1969), Unforgiven (1992)), and Classical would be those Westerns made in American prior to

The Brontes and Byronic Heroes

Charlotte and Emily Bronte shared some very interesting, and dreadful experiences throughout their childhood together. Tragic events such as their mother dying when they were under the age of 5 and then followed by the passing of the two oldest Bronte siblings, no doubt affected both authors works. The most obvious example of this affect is Charlotte's depiction of Lowood, compared to her experiences at Cowan Bridge. Helen Burns plays a strong maternal role in Jane's life, just as Charlotte's oldest sister, played in hers. Charlotte's bitterness towards the school where two of her siblings passed away is very evident in her portrayal of Helen's death at the school. This essay will attempt to show that because of the time period they grew up in, and their own family experiences the Byronic hero is so prevalent throughout their novels, "Jane Eyre," and, "Wuthering Heights,"

Importance of the Fifth Amendment

"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a grand jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of war or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation." That is the Fifth Amendment of the United States Constitution, and it's one of the most important ones because it protects your legal rights from the government. Specifically, it states that you can't be punished for a crime without a trial by jury, unless in a case involving the military during a time of war. Furthermore, it states that no one can be punished or brought to trial more than once for the same

Teaching Children Through Play

Preparing children for school is a challenging, but necessary task for parents. All parents want their children to do well in school, but starting school is a huge milestone in a child's development, and not every parent knows how to help their children be successful in throughout school. Tackling this concept of preparing a child for school may seem intimidating but it is very important. The concept of school readiness typically refers to the child's attainment of a certain set of emotional, behavioral, and cognitive skills needed to learn, work, and function successfully in school. Unfortunately, this common philosophy of being ready for school places an undue burden on children by expecting them to meet the expectations of school. A more constructive way to consider school readiness is to remove the expectations from the child and place those expectations onto the schools and the families. Young children have wide ranging needs and require support in preparing them for the high stan

Short Story - Mountain Quest

Aaron looked over the sea of ice, from the battlements of the steep cliff. Snow, and ice were all he could see. It was impossible to tell where the ice and snow ended, and where the sky began. Gloomy white was all around. He must cross this vast desert, to reach his homeland. This was not the most treacherous task of his voyage; that lay on the other side of the unforgiving sheet of ice. Aaron remounted his ivory reindeer. He had not named the beast, for it was bad luck to name anything this far north, as reindeer had a habit of dying from the cold. His mount was sure footed, as it descended the crisscross path that was cut into the face of the grey cliff. The beast made it to the bottom without fear of falling, but when Aaron urged it onto the sheet of ice, it hesitated. Reindeer are used to being on solid ground. With encouragement, the animal stepped forward onto the ice. There was a grumbled groan from beneath their feet. Unperturbed, Aaron ushered his beast forward. His father had told him long ago that the sound of the ice was the god of evil, who was trapped under the ice by Aga, the great mother in the sky. He looked up to the great mother; she was a blank c

Imagery and Symbolism in Young Goodman Brown

Symbolism expresses a figurative depiction of something. The imagery in many pieces of literature is conspicuous. An excellent depiction of imagery is the short story "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The story is bursting with figurative meaning. It also contributes the perfect illustration of a symbolic narrative. "Young Goodman Brown" is a great representation of an abstract meaning through concrete or material forms. Hawthorne's use of items and people signifies a metaphorical tone throughout "Young Goodman Brown." In the story "Young Goodman Brown," Hawthorne uses two great symbolic characters in the story. These distinctive characters are Young Goodman Brown and Faith. In "Young Goodman Bro

The Economic Effects of Obamacare

The newly passed Affordable Healthcare Act has caused much controversy amongst politicians and citizens of America. Although it is said to be beneficial in many ways, those characteristics are met by negative short and long-term consequences. What could this law mean for the large portion of GDP healthcare represents in the U.S economy? Many people believe that it will lead to a healthcare system like that of Canada or the U.K where hospitals aren't reimbursed and doctors begin to refuse new patients. In 2008, Barack Obama was elected president of the United States, one of the main points of his campaign platform was health care reform. The Patient Protection and Affordable Healthcare Act (PPACA) also known as "Obamacare," was signed into law by Barack Obama on 23rd March 2010 after a very close vote. Obamacare is a healthcare reform initiative introduced with significant goals such as eliminating the number of uninsured, reducing the cost of healthcare, and protecting peo

Adverse Outcomes of Alcohol and Marijuana

This article is about the study of adverse psychosocial outcomes that are associated with alcohol and marijuana use among U.S. high school seniors. This study was conducted because there has been a debate about whether marijuana use is more dangerous than alcohol use. The findings of this study will contribute to that ongoing debate on the marijuana policy and its perceived harm when compared to alcohol. After reviewing this study, I believe it to be valid and I will tell you why. This study lasted 4 years and there were 7,437 high school seniors that participated. The students were chosen from approximately 130 public and private schools throughout the U.S.. The schools were then selected through a multistage random sampling procedure. Geographic areas were selected, then schools wi

The Absurdity of Paying College Athletes

Over the past few years there has been a debate on whether college athletes should be paid as if they were professional athletes. A college athlete is defined as an amateur athlete that is not paid in salary, but provided with a scholarship. Although college athletes are some of the most well known athletes in the nation, they still do not receive money for their performances. Due to the fact these players are in college, they should not be paid to play the sport they are gifted with. The reasons why are because colleges are already providing student athletes with a scholarship to play, they are students first and athletes second, and lastly, it would be unfair to those that are not athletes. When a student-athlete is awarded with scholarship money in college, they are usually given a free ride, free room and board, or free tuition. Some athletes do not realize how much this really means. Some young men and women have to scrounge up money just to get one year of college, and then th

Adam, Eve and the Book of Genesis

I woke up in a panic and quickly checked my alarm clock. Crap. Over slept I grabbed my back pack and my speech that I had slaved over for weeks, still nervous to present it to the class. I ran into the classroom, cheeks flushed and out of breath. I knew I was late and immediately felt the teacher's disapproval eyes as I walked up to the front of the classroom to start my speech. I looked up to see Ms. Hale's wide eyes staring back at me, I assumed it was because of my tardiness. I turned back to the front to look out into my peer's eyes only to see them giggling, gawking, and pointing at me. Some girls in the front row were snickering and whispering to each other, I quickly felt my cheeks heat up as they turned a vibrant red. I slowly looked down and was petrified to see that I had forgotten to put on clothes. Face bright red I ran out of the classroom as quick as my feet could carry me. Everyone has had this dream at least once in their life, as soon as you realize your humility with

Tilikum and Whale Captivity

He has entertained many audiences with his amazing tricks. He has inspired hundreds to work with marine animals. He has helped change the world's view of whales. He has killed three people. Tilikum is a male Orca, more commonly referred to as a killer whale, with a complex background. In 1983 Tilikum was violently captured in Iceland and then illegally sold to 'Sealand of the Pacific' aquarium in Canada. He was two years old when this happened, ripped away from his family and cruelly sent to foreign waters. In the wild, Tilikum was used to swimming over 100 miles every day; in 'Sealand of the Pacific' Tilikum was used to floating in a concrete prison only ten feet longer than his body. When Tilikum was not confined in these small spaces, he was taken into a pool where he would perform tricks for audiences in order for him to receive food. The food was frozen fish which deprived the Orca of his necessary nutrients and food was withheld from Tilikum if he did not respond to the trainer

Freedom in The Lottery and Antigone

In The Lottery and the play Antigone two completely different perspectives of freedom are depicted. The two readings differ so drastically because of the major separation in time and setting. The play Antigone takes place in Ancient Greece when God's and men ruled and women did not have much power. The Lottery takes place in the 1940's in a small village in America with a few hundred or so brain washed villagers. Through out both stories family is relevant, and cruel deaths occur. Because of these elements within the two stories it is clear as to why and how the perspectives of freedom differ. Although The Lottery and Antigone took place so far apart in time they both have some sort of rite. The rite in The Lottery was not religious, but still ceremonial because it was believed The Lottery would bring a greater harvest of the crops for the villagers. Old Man Warner states, "Used to be a saying about 'Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.'"(Jackson 205). Also a specific r

Perceptions of Motherhood in Great Expectations

A recurring theme in Charles Dickens' "Great Expectations," is the reversal of stereotypical gender roles. Victorian women were seen as kind and nurturing, men were seen as strong, imposing and tolerant; Mrs Joe is mean, coldhearted and chastising (pp 11) while Joe is caring, submissive and gentle (pp 466) towards Pip. The tender nurturing qualities of Joe support the reversed gender roles, depicting Joe as a feminine man. Hemming (2011) explores the notion of Mrs Joe not conforming to the expected role of the Victorian mother, symbolizing a plausible reason for Pip's suffering and guilt in Great Expectations. Farrell (1997) points out that Pip's dead mother is the first female character introduced in Great Expectations, and is described by Pip as "freckled and sickly" (Farrell, 1997). In contrast, the next female character introduced is Mrs Joe, Pip's sister, presented as an unloving and masculine woman who has had no choice but to take on the role of Pip's mother. Pip's

Traits of Racism in Othello

One of the world's most debated issues is very prominent in Shakespeare's tragic play: Othello. The issue of racism is shown through the words and actions of every single character in the play. The motivating factors and reasons for a character's racist mindset may vary, but this topic still happens to appear in majority of dialogues. Roderigo, Iago, and Brabantio are three characters that portray racist traits throughout the play. No matter the circumstance, in that time period racism was natural, and inevitable to every social class. Roderigo is a jealous suitor of Desdemona, and is often portrayed as young, rich, and foolish. He obeys the words of Iago under any circumstance, and is completely oblivious to Iago's ulterior motives. Although Roderigo never thinks for himself, he still manages to spit racial slurs about Othello. Being a minor character that does not have his own opinion, he is clearly persuaded to fall into this racist society. While in conversation with Iago Roderig

Departmental by Robert Frost

Departmental - by Robert Frost "An ant on the tablecloth Ran into a dormant moth Of many times his size. He showed not the least surprise. His business wasn't with such. He gave it scarcely a touch, And was off on his duty run. Yet if he encountered one Of the hive's enquiry squad Whose work is to find out God And the nature of time and space, He would put him onto the case. Ants are a curious race; One crossing with hurried tread The body of one of their dead Isn't given a moment's arrest- Seems not even impressed. But he no doubt reports to any With whom he crosses antennae, And they no doubt report To the higher-up at court. Then word goes forth in Formic: 'Death's come to Jerry McCormic, Our selfless forager Jerry. Will the special Janizary Whose office it is to bury The dead of the commissary Go bring him home to his people. Lay him in state on a sepal. Wrap him for shroud in a petal. Embalm him with ichor of nettle. This is the word of your Queen.' And presently on the scene Appe

Women and Progressive Society

"I want a wife who will keep my house clean. A wife who will pick up after my children, a wife who will pick up after me" (419). Many women have heard this before, but nowadays, they are taking a step away from the common role of a "house wife". In today's modern society women have achieved so much; from being simple "house wives", to CEOs in major companies. There are several reasons why women have progressed so much, such as changes in culture, diversity in government, and in some cases, changes in society standards. Women have always held the role of the "caretaker" in a marriage, and in American society. They have had to give up their education and careers, just too simply be the husband's extra hand. In a typical family, the mother took care of the children, kept the house clean, and catered to the husband's every need. Because of the stigma society had set upon them, women from diverse social economic status would not dare cross gender roles. Even if they chose to cross the stereotypical role of a "house wife" and join the work

Short Story - Blood on the Sand

"Not another one" "I'm afraid so. We've got a serial killer on our hands, Lindsey" It was the morning of July 11, 1972. Career Police Detective Joe Turner was standing on the beach with his hands in his pockets and a scowl on his face. By his side was Samuel Lindsey, a 20 year-old detective-in-training from Springfield, Massachusetts. Sand crept into Turner's size 10 black loafers as he knelt over the body to examine the strangulation markings on the victim's neck. This body was the fourth in as many weeks that had washed up on the shores of Hampton Beach, New Hampshire. Although it was a bright, sunny day, apart from the flock of seagulls that had formed around the body, Turner and Lindsey were the only two living things on the beach. As Turner examined a stab wound located between the victim's 3rd and 4th rib, he noticed that Lindsey was avoiding making eye contact with the body, and the paleness in his face rivaled that of the victim. "What's the matter with yo

Enron and the Sarbanes Oxley Act

Now a days it seem as if every time someone opens a newspaper or reads the latest news update online, another corporate scandal has occurred. It's nothing new that companies and their executives are being charged with falsifying their earnings or financial documents for personal gain, but what is being done to prevent it? Although it may seem like these accounting scandals happen all the time, people fail to realize there are huge laws set in place to prevent these type of scandals from happening. One of the largest and most influential of these laws set in place to prevent falsified financial reporting and protect the public is the Sarbanes Oxley Act (SOX), which was implemented immediately after the Enron corporate scandal in 2001. The Sarbanes Oxley Act changed corporate America for the better, by giving rise to stronger more ethical policies, restructuring and enforcing stronger corporate governance and corporate accountability, and redefining financial disclosure. Before a person
