Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison

In a world far from perfection, love is argued to be the closest thing mankind has to magic. However, throughout Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon, the positive nature of this intense affection is challenged. Morrison explores the detrimental effects of a lack of mutuality when it comes to love. For some, receiving unconditional love from another is truly a blessing, for love's ferocity can detach even the most high strung people from life's complexities. In contrast, in the face of repudiation of that love, it can become a weapon, with the ability to transform a person. This is mostly due to the fact that expression of this kind of endearment takes courage and confidence and when denied, can take on a hopeless form. The overwhelming power of love drives Hagar's pursuit of Milkman and disables her from recognizing the imbalance of feelings in their relationship, which is truly the center of her internal conflict. This rejection can be seen clearly through Hagar and how Milkman's inabilit

The American Dream - A Raisin in the Sun

In A Raisin in the Sun, Lorrain Hansberry depicts the Younger family as an ambitious group of people wanting either a little or a lot more for themselves. However small or grand their dreams are, the Youngers are a proud and humble family based on morals enforced by the matriarch of the family. Each of the characters in the play are trying to fulfill a goal in which society may limit their opportunities. However, with struggle comes hope. The Youngers try to attain the American dream through the hope of having endless opportunities, but realize that even with hope, the struggle continues. The Youngers are a Christian, African-American family living in the 1950s - an era when discrimination was still at its peak. The Youngers consist of Lena Younger (Mama), her two children: Walter Lee Younger and Beneatha Younger, Ruth Younger (Walter Lee's wife), and Ruth's and Walter's son, Travis Younger. The Youngers are a working class family trying to get by day by day with what they can. Mama

Lesson Plan for Achieving a Healthy Lifestyle

Research has shown that the top health and nutrition concerns in America are associated with severe diseases like diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer and hypertension. Nutritionists assure that physical activity and eating the right foods are the best medicines. However, research shows that Americans do not follow the right recommendations. This was the main reason why I chose to teach this topic. Providing them with the right information and guidelines to face this issue is my goal. Besides being well aware and informed about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, I am a person who is really passionate for food, cooking, and exercising. I am constantly reading and researching about nutritional news, facts and healthy ideas to include into my daily routine. Moreover, I am currently interning at WBHI, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to help women with breast cancer and heart disease. I am confident that prevention and education is key to a healthier and happier life. These

Media Bias and the Crimea Crisis

Russia's seizing of Crimea has sparked international tensions between Russia and the west, which has led to many to suspect a new Cold War is around the corner. This direct action has been compared to Russia's covert actions towards the Ukraine crisis, and has given cause for other nations to suspect his motives and possible Geo-strategic intent in extending to the Baltic States. As a result, their respective governments have influenced international media, some outwardly giving talking points that form a narrative of a Russia versus the west conflict, which is on the edge of propaganda. There are slight differences in coverage between the media of the United States of America and the Russian Federation with regard to the actions involving Crimea. First in the United States, in opposition to President Barack Obama's actions regarding Ukraine, the Washington Post seems to hold a Neoconservative perspective. In the Washington Post, Obama is portrayed as a weak leader who is not knowledg

Individuality and Community in Literature

The role of the individual and their relationship with the community is an important thematic issue that is observed in the works of Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony and Barbara Kingsolver's Animal Dreams. The authors deal with individuals who have been dislocated from the community that eventually saves them from disintegration. Structurally, both novels are very different despite setting their protagonists on a journey of self-discovery that takes them through the American Southwest using memory flashbacks and Native American Mythology. Leslie Marmon Silko's Ceremony uses the protagonist Tayo to tell his story, but the narrative is disturbed by analepsis memories, initially when he is still "sick;" the narrative is also disrupted by Silko's use of myth, both traditional Native American myths and contemporary interpretations of the myth form. The hummingbird myth is a continuous yet interrupted tale of a society who has been tricked into ignoring its own roots and has to make am

Worldwide Freedom of Speech

"If we're going to preach freedom of expression around the world, we have to practice it" (Saletan 93). "Practicing" means to accept what others believe in. When one hears for the first time of the hate crimes in the West, it would be strange to not feel surprised. Being so uninvolved with what happens to other countries other than the U.S. can shock one by the simple thought of not being able to express their thoughts without being punished. If another individual would express their similar thoughts but on a different topic and did not get punished, you would immediately realize that the laws are unequal when it comes to the freedom of speech. In the article "How Can We Ban Insults Against Jews but Not Muslims?" William Saletan writes of the unfair laws of the freedom of speech, which leaves its readers aware of the news they have missed, surprised that they missed it and shocked with the unjust laws created to oppress the freedom to share ones beliefs. Being aware of the hate speech situation that is happening is only a small step

Before the Law by Franz Kafka

Franz Kafka's short story "Before the Law" tells the story of a man who wants to have access to the law. He tries to do so by walking up to the first of many gates that guards this law, however the gatekeeper does not let him through. And so, the man waits, but his access is never granted. In terms of structure, the story can be seen in a simplistic manner. Kafka uses this method to convey the ambiguity related to the theme of political, religious and philosophical law. With no particular setting, the plot is universalized, therefore becoming applicable to any time or place, as the reader is only introduced to the two main characters by their titles "the man" and "the gatekeeper" and their surrounding is also left unnamed, such as the man's "homeland". The use of vague vocabulary through words such as "inextinguishably" and "indifferent," contributes to the mystification of the term "law" and creates a problematic a

Impact and Influence - The Picture of Dorian Gray

"The Picture of Dorian Gray" is a philosophical novel, written by writer and playwright Oscar Wilde. It portrays the superficial nature of society, and the supremacy of youth and beauty. Furthermore, it discusses the purpose of art and aestheticism. One of the theme of the novels, frequently discussed by the characters of the book itself, is influence and its consequences. As Lord Henry says early on in the novel, "All influence is immoral." (Wilde 20). The novel depicts influence as something that is immoral and damaging, for it hinders an individual from truly prospering to their potential and becoming who they were supposed to. The portrait of Dorian, along with the yellow book, is a representation of the profound and harmful influence art may have over an individual. They have a profound effect on Dorian, influencing him to show predominantly immoral behavior over the course of nearly two decades. The yellow book is a gift to Dorian from Lord Henry. The author describes

Identity Crisis Depicted in Two Literary Works

INTRODUCTION Identity in the simplest terms refers to who and what we are. It can be described as an easily noticed characteristics belonging to any given individual, or shared by all members of a particular social category or group. The process of the development of the distinct personality of an individual is referred to as identity formation. The identity of an individual or group comprises of one's identification with significant others; primarily with parents and other individuals during one's biographical experience. An individual's identity consists of a persona, sexual identity and gender identity while the group expressions include religious identity, cultural identity, political identity and national identity. Truths of Humanity in Literature

Literature often is used as a vehicle to describe and depict to its audience the nature of human kind. Whether it be a novel, poetry, or play, any well-written literary piece can have a profound effect those who have experience it. In Oedipus the King, Sophocles uses dramatic irony to display how ignorance can help perpetuate order and how pride can quickly tear down that order. In Beowulf, Beowulf embodies how confidence and accountability in a leader can generate loyal followers. In these two texts, employing various techniques, the authors effectively reveal numerous human truths to the reader. The truths regarding leadership in human nature are intertwined into Beowulf. Through Beowulf's actions and his ascent to leadership, the truths regarding the relationship between leaders and the people that they lead are revealed. In Beowulf, the author introduces the idea of a virtuous leader very early on in the text. The narrator, introducing Hrothgar's family lineage, describes the pat

The American Water Crisis

With the ever-expanding population requiring more food and water for daily needs, usable water is being exhausted. In regions like India and Africa, water is scarce and clean water is even scarcer. When one takes into account the agricultural, industrial, and mankind's water consumption, soon the world could face these same water crises. Consider this: to make 1 pound of plastic it takes 24 gallons of water. It takes about 39,090 gallons of water to make the average car, and 53 gallons to make a single to-go latte (Tree Hugger). In developing countries, India, Kenya, and Uganda for example, there is no way to sanitize their dirty water. However, if the world were to become more water efficient, and become better at cleaning the water that is already available to us, then this problem can be resolved. This is a relatively new problem in the world; over the last hundred years the human population grew from nearly one billion to seven billion people. All of these people need water to

The Traditional American Wilderness

When you think of Wilderness, would you define it as: an uncultivated, uninhabited, and inhospitable region1 Depending on your background and what culture you were raised in, everyone's ideals of wilderness will vary. For majority of Americans raised in towns and cities, this is the image of wilderness that is taught from a young age. Society encourages a close relationship and preservation of the wilderness we've grown up to understand. Our close relationships include short-lived recreational activities like camping trips, site seeing, and hunting. Although these activities proposer in wilderness, the areas of land they occupy are reserves and national land set aside to maintain an untouched, preserved environment for animal habitats while still providing human entertainment. Why has the image of wilderness as a preserve been created and passed down this way in the lives of Americans? The image of wilderness we still see today incorporates what is considered the traditional wildernes

The Brilliance of Thomas Edison

There are always the copies and the prototype, there are always the branches and the stem, there are always the streams and the spring, and there are always the inventors and the greatest of inventors. Thomas Alva Edison is remembered as being the godfather of all inventors and is viewed as being the icon in the field of inventions. This description is not strange when you connect his image with the light bulb. Imagine that the world is without light bulbs, how would life be? Dark? Gloomy? Melancholic? To this man we owe the bright nights; to this man we owe the phonograph; to this man we owe the motion picture camera; and to this man we owe more than 1,200 other contributions and inventions. THOMAS ALVA EDISON was born at Milan Ohio, February 11, 1847. Arthur E. Kennelly (1932) mentioned that Thomas Edison's ancestor were originally from Holland and in the year 1730 they moved to New Jersey. His father, Samuel, met Nancy Elliot, Edison's mother, in Ontario and he married her. The coup

Arts and My Statement of Purpose

I remember watching one of my favorite movies, "Goodfellas," and being charmed by one particular scene. Henry was taking Karen on their first actual date, and he took her through the back of the Copacabana, through the kitchen, then to the lobby, and finally to the table where they sat. What intrigued me so much about that scene was that it all had been shot entirely at once. At the time, I had never seen anything like that, and for some reason it amazed and touched me on such a primal level that I felt goosebumps all over my body. Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg and many more amazing directors have all used their superb skills to bring life to some of our nation's greatest movies. My dream as an aspiring director/producer is to evoke the same emotions that Mr. Scorsese brought out of me. I want to change lives, make people think, make them laugh, make them cry, make them wonder, and make them imagine. There is no doubt in my mind that SCAD will help me attain all of the ski

Constitutional Reforms and the UK Government

A constitution is a set of rules, processes and principles, describing the political institutions of a state. Since 1997 New Labour aimed to prove they had become a modern party and proposed constitutional reforms (amendments to the constitution), both to modernise the UK and to garner support from welsh and Scottish voters. These reforms were also introduced as the labour party felt there had been a drift towards excessive power under the conservatives since 1979. In 1998, the labour government introduced the Scotland and Wales Act, this transferred powers from Westminster to the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly. Both acts were implemented after a pre legislative referendum in Scotland and wales in 1997. The introduction of these acts has weakened government powers as it means they have fewer jurisdictions over some laws in Scotland and wales. Having said that, this transfer of power also known as devolution, is not a transfer of sovereignty – ultimate power and often referred to as quasi federalism as the powers distributed can be regained by parliament, who remains sovereign, how

Reasons to Go Into the Wild

Raised in the 'well-to-do' upper class, Chris McCandless saw the real truth of the gilded class; he realized that material things are not all that matter; that he, himself, in nature mattered. McCandless went to the Alaskan frontier to escape society and its limitations on life. He began a new journey to kill the false being within, which was too greatly influenced by society; he went for a spiritual revolution. He went into the wild to be free-- ultimately. McCandless was not the reckless type, but he did not respond very well to authority. He felt contained in society and he felt free in the wild. He was a caged bird just waiting to fly freely in the sky. He was so caught up in everyone's expectations for him that when he came to the realization that he did not have to live the life others expected him to, he was free. "At long last he was unencumbered, emancipated from the stifling world of his parents and peers" (23), Krakauer wrote. In Walden, or Life in the Woods

Downfall of a Hero - Macbeth

In life even a hero can lead his life into a downfall. A tragic hero must experience both a tragic and heroic life. In Shakespeare's Macbeth, the titular of the play is a great example of a tragic hero. Firstly, Macbeth is already of high status from the beginning of the play, and is brave in battle to win the war for Scotland; surely this makes him a hero. Next Macbeth's tragic flaw is his, that is a desire for power and to be king. These flaws play an important role in the outcome of his life. Finally Macbeth's obsession with the prophecies, and the murders he commits mainly leads to his downfall or periopetria. Although, a hero usually lives a triumphant life their personality can lead to their downfall and death. Too start off with Macbeth's bravery and courage won the day for Scotland in defeating Norway and Macdonowald. First, brave and loyal Macbeth storms through the battle with Banquo defeating Sweno, in an insane fight for which his, "brandished steel, which smoked wit

Private Military Corporations

Beginning with the decline of the mercenary profession, the use of private military contractors began to rise. Starting not long after the Cold War, PMC has now spread so far that it is currently used in every continent, except for Antarctica. PMC have become so popular for many reasons. For example, they are not in the hands of the formal government, therefore there is a political barrier for a country to avoid being condemned for its wrong-doings. They are not officially military personnel, so in the event that a human right is violated or they've abused their power, it is hard to bring them to justice. There is also very little regulation regarding the use of PMC in peacekeeping, military and security operations. PMC were first used in Africa during the 1990's. They were first involved fighting the National Union for Total Independence for Angola and later in

Economic Contributions of Alfred Marshall

British economist Alfred Marshall(1842-1924), known as the father of Modern Orthodox Microeconomic theory (Neoclassicism). Alfred Marshall is one of the most influential people in modern economics over all, but especially to his well-known students John Maynard Keynes and Joan Robinson. He also initiated the profession, what it is to be an economist. Being was a mathematician .Marshall's most important book, Principles of Economics, published in 1890, is equally as influential and important to economics as he is. When modern economists, are trying to understand why the price or quantities bought and produced of a good changes, start by looking for factors that may have shifted demand and/or supply are in direct effect of Marshall's method and way of analyses. In his book, Principles of Economics, he pointed out that the price and out of good are determined by both supply and demand. He goes on to describe how the curves of supply and demand are like a pair of scissors blades inter

The Importance of Family

In human context, a family is a group of people affiliated by consanguinity, affinity, or co-residence. In most societies it is the principal institution for the socialization of children. Anthropologists most generally classify family organization as conjugal and consanguine in which parents and children co-reside with other members of one parent's family. Tears, warm and glimmering with feelings cascaded down my blushing cheeks. I sat there, curled in a tight ball on the corner of my bed. Each breath heaved in my stomach and the taste of salt covered my lips. A knock on the door made me somewhat compose myself. My hoarse voice permeated my room. "Come in," I whispered, my voice cracking like a whip and my eyes filling with a pool of feelings once more. A brunette, tall, beautiful and skinny entered my room. She closed the door behind her and plopped herself next to me. "Hey sis." That was all she said. She didn'

Alcohol Intervention and Female Undergrads

Background Alcohol consumption among university students is a continuing concern for the population (Wilk et al., 1997; DOH, 2005) and the general behaviours influenced by alcohol involve violence, unsafe sexual tendencies leading to unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, injuries and a rise in illegal activities (Bewick et al., 2007). The World Health Organisation European Region (2006) state that although women overall only account for 20% to 35% of alcohol consumption in Europe, the proportion is still the highest in the world; they have also presented shocking figures concerning premature mortality rates (an increase of 15% between 2000-2002) stating 6.3% of deaths in Europe are alcohol related. These statistics don't necessarily pin point the student population being a main eye of concern, however the student lifestyle and adopted culture is very well known throughout Europe. In 2008 Bewick et al had found university students decreased their alcohol consumption thro

Ecommerce Security Issues

The annihilation of trust in Internet commerce applications may bring about reasonable business administrators and customers to do without utilization of the Internet for the present and return back to customary techniques for working together. This loss of trust is being powered by proceeded with stories of programmer assaults on e-commerce destinations and buyer information protection misuse. Programmers requesting a payment from an ecommerce site for not distributed client charge card data have expanded the perceivability of the system security shortcomings in many business foundations. The contention in the middle of comfort and usability versus security has dependably been determined for accommodation. Nonetheless, late infection assaults against Microsoft have shown that comfort permits the fast expansion of infections and worms all through the Internet. As no dominant powers emerged as they did in other parts of Europe, the oligarchic city-state became the domina

Movie Reflection - The Breakfast Club

I am going to be reflecting on the events that occurred in the film The Breakfast Club, and how they are relevant to themes presented in our text that cover topics on family and peers. The Breakfast Club brings to light a lot of theories in adolescence, and expands upon them in extreme measures, but measures that are abundant nonetheless. The characters I am going to be focusing on are Claire, Bender, and Brian. Claire is portrayed as the popular girl, or "princess". She is in detention in the movie because she skipped class to go shopping and hang out with her friends. Her father shows a form of parenting called Indulgent parenting. He tells her that she should go to classes but never places a punishment on her, and then gives her a gift. The Definition of indulgent parenting is a parent or parents that are very involved with their children but place few demands or controls on them (Santrock 2012, pg. 261). This usually leads to lack of control or respect for the parent. Claire's father loved her, but placed no blame on her actions, which could lead her to believe that although the school gave her a detention, she won't r
